iCloud Private Relay disabled, but some websites still use it. How do I stop this ?

iCloud Private Relay disabled, but some websites still use it. How do I stop this ?

    Hello,

I'm using a MBA M1 with the official release of macOS Monterey and Safari (and also Microsoft Edge).

Like you see in the attached screenshots some websites are filtered through iCloud Private Relay but other websites are not, even though Private Relay is disabled by default and I've never used it (also I already tried to enable/disable it). This thing happens only on Safari (on Edge it doesn't, for example). The MBA is connected to my home wifi (and not iPhone hotspot).

iCloud Private Relay has an impact on connection speed and I need to stop it somehow. Do you have any idea how I can fix this ?

Apple, can you please bring back these features to macOS?

    Posted: 09 Nov 2021 12:57 AM PST

Apple, can you please bring back these features to macOS?

My mac automatically updated from Catalina to Big Sur, and I immediately hate some UI design changes. Don't get me wrong, I love the new "top-to-bottom" blurred sidebar design of Big Sur, but I also hate the new "translucent" menu bar and the updated Launchpad icon (Please bring back the rocket design and slap some Rounded square on it, Apple).

Here's the things/features that I want Apple to bring back to macOS:

    1. Background blur of lock screen wallpaper (As seen on High Sierra or Mojave I think)
    2. The old Launchpad Icon (As seen on the video below)

Here's a blurred lock screen wallpaper I made. It also shows the Launchpad icon I always want Big Sur to have.

    1. The old Menu Bar design.

    This is on Catalina...

...and this is on Big Sur.

BTW both of them are on Dark mode.

In addition to that, I really wish that the menu bar has the same blur design as the Sound setting or the dock.

    1. The old "Playful Elements" of mac icons.

I mean... It is like evolving, but backwards. (Photo credit to Basic Apple Guy on Twitter)

I want to know your thoughts on the new design changes on Big Sur. I love Big Sur and Monterey, but I think deciding to bring the iOS look to macOS was kind of a wrong move. I lowkey wanted to downgrade my mac to catalina, but I am busy in uni and I don't want to screw my main pc.

After updating to Mac OS Monterey, my bluetooth headphones won't play audio even when connected

    Posted: 08 Nov 2021 09:54 PM PST

Before I updated my 2017 Macbook Pro to Monterey, my Bluetooth wireless headphones connected to my laptop with ease, and played sound. After I updated my MacBook Pro, it took many attempts to try and connect my headphones, and even if I got them connected, my laptop would not recognise them as something to play audio through, if that makes sense. Basically, it only allows me to play audio through my laptop, even if my headphones are successfully connected. The attached link shows the issue. Notice that it takes 1 minute to connect my headphones, and even when successfully connected, they can not play audio through them, only the mac. And this only started happening a day after I updated my MacBook to Monterey. And my headphones are not connected to any other device, they are fully charged, and they play audio just fine when I disconnect them from my macbook and connect them to my phone. This has led me to believe that the issue is due to the update. https://photos.app.goo.gl/nah2vnv2YwUMSoKi9

What are some of the most underrated shortcuts you cannot live without?

    Posted: 08 Nov 2021 01:21 PM PST

I am new to Mac so my shortcuts are pretty basic:

    1. Hide apps instantly (Cmd+H)
    2. Switch between different windows of same app (Cmd+`)
    3. Safari address bar (Cmd+L) <--- Absolute lifesaver
    4. Empty Trash (Cmd+Shift+Del)

Lastly, is there a shortcut to display desktop, as I am mostly using external Keyboard with a Logitech mouse, can't really use the trackpad shortcut.

Double clicking photos in iMessage doesnt open full sized photo anymore on Monterey (worked fine on Big Sur)

    Posted: 09 Nov 2021 02:42 AM PST

I'm having a problem where now all of a sudden after upgrading to Monterey, double-clicking photos in iMessage no longer opens them in Preview / full sized window. The only way I got that to work was by clicking on Details, and selecting the photo. Quite annoying to have something that worked perfectly before suddenly disappear with an upgrade.

Anyone know how to fix this? so that the full sized image shows when i double click on it? Worked fine on Big Sur!

Can someone PLEASE help me fix my MacBook?

    Posted: 08 Nov 2021 10:45 PM PST

I'm giving my MacBook to my mom. I tried factory resetting it and when I try reinstalling the OS I keep getting "error occurred while preparing installation on Mac" after it downloads. I tried this multiple times after resetting it and correctly setting the date. I don't know if this is because there isn't an OS but when I run first aid on "AppleAPFSMedia" it says it found corruption that needs to be repaired and to run first aid in recovery, but I am already in recovery by selecting command + r. If I don't use the key combination a folder pops up with a question mark.

Idk what to do and I'm afraid I pretty much just ruined the chance for my mom to get a new computer

I made a little app that adds seeking controls to the Mac PiP window

    Posted: 09 Nov 2021 02:29 AM PST

Hi all. I really missed seeking controls on the macOS Picture in Picture window for quickly going back 15 seconds in a video. So I made a little app called Pippo that solves the problem. Get it here and let me know what you think: https://goodsnooze.gumroad.com/l/pippo

Use code 'reddit' to get it for free

Thinking of switching from Windows to MacOS because the new M1 MBA is just too good. Anything I should know?

    Posted: 08 Nov 2021 11:59 AM PST

As the title said, lifetime windows user planning on swapping to the MBA with the M1 chip. Very skeptical as Im scared I will miss windows but everyone I spoke to irl and online said, and I quote:

Once you go MAC, you never go back?

Is there anything I should know before I buy the M1 MBA? Will I be able to learn the laptop well enough to do exams on it in a month and a half?

Also how does CSGO and LoL run on it? I heard they run pretty smoothly so I think I should be fine. Hoping that my office license would transfer over from my current windows laptop to my MacBook.

Thanks in advance to everyone willing to help a potentially new Macboy out :)

After updating to macOS Monterey, notifications stop popping up

    Posted: 09 Nov 2021 12:48 AM PST

Upgraded macOS to Monterey a few days ago. I've found out that my notifications stop popping up.

When applications like Telegram, Mail etc. received notifications, it should trigger the notification panel to pop up that notification for a few seconds but nothing happened.

I thought I accidentally turned on the Focus Mode but I've checked and it is turned off. All the application notifications are set to allow.

I even tried running this command in terminal:

osascript -e 'display notification "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet" with title "Title"'

I can see all the notifications when I open the notification panel ( By clicking the date-time on top right ) but they just wont pop up when I received them. My co-worker also had this problem after upgrading FYI.

Infuse 7 is the best macos player

    Posted: 09 Nov 2021 12:44 AM PST

I recently got to know that infuse came to mac and after trying it out yesterday i have to say it is the best video player i have used for mac. I've tried IINA, VLC, cisdem and many other video players but infuse really delivers the best performance. IINA was the smoothest for me uptil now, but it also struggled to play 1440@60fps smoothly, but infuse played it fantastically without even a single stutter. I suggest all of you those who are not happy with their media players to try out infuse.

    How exactly does TimeMachine work?

    Posted: 08 Nov 2021 12:48 PM PST

I'm new to MacOs. Got the M1 MBA in June . I use time machine to backup every two weeks to an external HDD but I'm thinking about getting the 14inch M1 Pro. I'm wondering if I get the new machine can I simply plug the external hdd and restore my backup and everything will be exactly as it was?

I have so much configured on my MBA and I don't want to waste time setting everything back up.

MacOS local update server - analog for MS WSUS - does it exist?

    Posted: 09 Nov 2021 12:03 AM PST

We have about hundreds macbooks in company, and it's very problematic to get hundreds update from Apple update servers.

Maybe exists some local repository for MacOS updates from local network (not from global internet) like a MS WSUS / SCCM / Distribution Points?

macOS 12.0.,1 Memory leaks - install 12.1 beta?

    Posted: 08 Nov 2021 11:24 AM PST

I am having serious memory leak issues on macOS Monterey 12.0.1. Is it worth it to install the 12.1 beta or should I just wait until the stable version is released? I don't know how many weeks longer I can take 30 mins of everyday browsing taking up 12gb of RAM in 30 mins on a laptop with 16gb.

Does it have any other serious bugs? Also, should I do a full backup before installing it or can I treat it as a regular update wherein I don't have to back up beforehand?

macOS Catalin on iMac with Fusion drive -> split into SSD (APFS) + HDD (HFS+)

    Posted: 08 Nov 2021 09:29 PM PST

I have older iMac (late 2012 27") with 1TB Fusion drive, which as far as I understand is using 128Gb SSD and 1TB HDD.

I've made a mistake to upgrade it to Catalina, which converted / to APFS, which is giving me 4MB read speed (tested with "dd"). APFS seems to be not a good fit for Fusion or HDDs/spinning disk.

Can I split Fusion drive into separate SSD and HDD drives, format 128GB SSD as APFS and use it as system disk, while keeping 1TB HDD and formatting it as HFS+?

My idea is to split Fusion drive, install macOS on SSD using APFS, format HDD as HFS+ and move my /User/rainnz there.

It seems doable for me. Am I missing anything?

Another question would be restoring /Users/rainnz from Time Machine after home folder is moved to new location. I have a lot of files there backed up to external HDD using Time Machine.

[Montenery] Light top bar on second screen

    Posted: 08 Nov 2021 02:54 PM PST

Could be a bug on startup screen? After completely draining the battery on my M1 Pro 16” / 12.0.1 (21A559), this screen came up after i plugged into a power outlet. Anyone seen this on their MacOS 12 or New Macs? It cleared in about 10 seconds as the Mac booted.
