I caved, and got a 2018 MacBook Pro Posted: 22 Feb 2019 03:26 PM PST I know we hate the latest generation Macbook Pros around here, and I was on the same boat when I got a 2015 MacBook Pro. However, I use it for video editing and 3D modelling outside of class and honestly it wasn't fast enough. So I ordered the 2018 model earlier this week and it arrived yesterday. I got a cheap dongle as well (joined that dongle life) I ended up getting the 2.6 Ghz 6 core model with stock specs (16GB RAM, 512GB SSD and 560X) for around 20% off retail price (I got it from eBay, brand new, sealed) I've read a lot about possible problems and things that can fail on it, so I went for AppleCare (I've never bought it for a Mac before, it's $419 Canadian plus tax, jeez) First of all, the screen is significantly different than the 2015. I think it's mostly the scaling, but there is something else as well. The body is significantly more rigid and I really like Space Gray. Touch ID is amazing. I have an Apple Watch and I usually unlock my computer with it, but this is way faster. By the time the screen goes on, I'm already logged back in. Touch Bar is nice, however, it's not a game-changing feature. It's nice to use in Final Cut Pro and such, but not really useful in daily use (I use OneNote and it's useful, however I could live without it) I was shocked when Apple first came up with the Butterfly keyboard, and my feelings haven't changed until a couple of weeks ago. I checked out my friend's base 2017 Pro and thought I can get used to it. I went to an Apple Store and tried typing on a new Pro, and I realized I actually type faster than I do on my 2015. It's not necessarily quiet, but I like the clicking sound. It's absolutely better than the older ones. It's overall not a bad experience. I don't usually do benchmarks, but I wanted to give Cinebench a shot and it got around 1000 both on Windows and Mac. I ran the benchmark 3 times on both OS, and I got pretty consistent scores. In the last year, I used a 2015 13" MacBook Pro with 500 battery cycles and 90% battery health and another 2015 15" Pro with 180 cycles and 86% battery health, and they would both last around 7 hours. This one actually lasts 10 hours and it's very impressive -- I used it all day without charging it and it actually lasted 10 hours and 11 mins, with 50% brightness, WiFi&Bluetooth on and listening to music from iTunes. Side note: I really like the fact that I can use either Thunderbolt port to charge it. Also, speakers. Oh, speakers. They're AMAZING PS: I might shoot a review and post it on YouTube. Worth £1980. for 2018 Macbook pro 13 i5 16gb 1tb? Posted: 22 Feb 2019 02:50 PM PST Is 16GB / 1TB overkill for an i5 processor? I'll only be using it for grad school, light photography. I definitely want the 13" for portability. [link] [comments]
Getting a New MacBook Question Posted: 22 Feb 2019 09:57 PM PST So back in 2015 when I first started college, my parents got me the MacBook Air 11 inch. I didn't know shit about GB and all that so I got the 120GB, thinking that was a lot. Today, I ran out of storage and I still use my MacBook to store a lot of things. I tried deleting literally EVERYTHING but it says I have 100GB of "other" stuff. Anyway, my parents suggested buying me a new one. If they pay for it why not right? My question is, is there a way to move all of the stuff on my old Mac to my new one? Is that possible at all? I would be getting it at Best Buy if that helps... thanks [link] [comments]
Connecting MacBook to TV question Posted: 22 Feb 2019 08:05 PM PST So when I connect my MacBook 2017 to my flatscreen TV using HDMI, my MacBook screen changes. It's strange. Everything goes black for a second and then just becomes much smaller on the MacBook. And the folders rearrange too. It's really annoying. Then when I unplug it from the TV, the MacBook screen goes black for a second then the size goes back to normal but the folders are all rearranged a second time. Does anyone know if this is normal, or if there is any way to stop my MacBook screen from changing whatsoever when I plug it into the TV using HDMI? [link] [comments]
Design Workstation build: Macbook Pro 15in 2.2 vs 2.6, Radeon Pro s Vega Posted: 22 Feb 2019 03:31 PM PST Will be using this new Macbook Pro primarily as an Adobe CC workstation. I use Illustrator and Photoshop, and will be learning some After Effects - no real video editing to speak of. I multitask quite a bit. Which model is best for me, 2.2 or 2.6 Which card impacts heavy 2D work? I will automatically be asking for 32G RAM My employer will take care of the order so I want to ask for a high spec, but not if the 2.gG is not really goign to impact design work. Same consideration for the video card. *My illustrator alone work is very complex. I have not met a Macbook I didnt bog down or break just based on .ai use. [link] [comments]

Posted: 22 Feb 2019 02:04 PM PST I have a MacBook Air 2014 123G 13inch and the last week it has been on the fritz. It started acting funny when I was using Google Chrome and excel for school and everything on the screen would freeze up. I could move my mouse and switch between screens using the trackpad but I could not select anything and had to force shut it down. This happened for about three days. Now the mouse floats around and does it's own thing and has started selecting stuff and taking me to random pages from the time I stopped looking at my computer to work on something else and look back up. I did the apple diagnostics and it did not come up with any issues. Any and all help appreciated to solve this problem!! [link] [comments]
Posted: 22 Feb 2019 12:09 PM PST I have a 2019 MBP nTB that I use with a Caldigit thunderbolt 3 docking station. I use the dock to connect my MBP to two DELLU2515H monitors, one directly through a USBC to DP cable and the other through a DP to DP cable. Occasionally one of the monitors will flick black as if it were sleeping and then come back with no issues. Sometimes, however, the monitor will go completely black and stay that way. While the screen is black, I can see my mouse cursor and move it around, but cannot see any of the screen content. Is this most likely an issue with the USBC hub that I am using or should I be looking into my monitor as a potential issue? [link] [comments]
