Should I invest in 16Gb of ram over 8Gb of ram in a MacBook Pro M1?

    Posted: 11 Aug 2021 09:41 AM PDT

    Hello,

I'm planning on buying a MacBook Pro in the oncoming months but I'm not sure whether to invest in 16Gb of ram over 8Gb. I would mostly use my laptop for revision. If I only used it for revision, I wouldn't even consider 16Gb of ram, but the reason I would consider it is because for at least 2 days a week I'm editing 4K footage on premiere and I'd be using Logic Pro on a daily basis.

    Thanks for the help!

    Keyboard imprints on screen

    Posted: 11 Aug 2021 09:14 PM PDT

Hi, I have observed that when I open my laptop I see the keyboard imprints on the screen. Should I use any sort of cover on the keyboard that can prevent this from happening?

Does m1 macbook's screen get cracked easily?

    Posted: 11 Aug 2021 09:10 PM PDT

I am going to buy a m1 MBA soon and just noticed that there are many posts on apple forum about m1 mac's screen cracked for no reason. People who own m1 macs for about a year, what's your experience so far?

    Thanks.

16GB M1 Macbook Pro or Air?

    Posted: 11 Aug 2021 03:24 PM PDT

This is the lowdown. University student studying and freelancing in graphic design for clients and personal uses. Pretty much use Photoshop/illustrator every day 95% of the year. This macbook wouldn't be my MAIN device, but I will use it every day, used mostly for work purposes. I wanted to go with a more powerful device I can pick up and go with, and then connect it to a monitor when I need too, so the MacBook is definitely the thing for me. I just don't know which to go for. But I'm also looking to try some light gaming through emulation like dolphin and stuff which I heard runs very good.

I have enough money to get either 16gb ram version (pro or air), I just don't know which is best to go for? I know the pro has cooling and a touch bar and the screen is slightly better. Is it THAT much of a change that will make me prefer the Pro over the air? I'm happy with buying the pro; but what are the key differences between the 16gb air and the 16gb pro?

    Spilled water on my macbook

    Posted: 11 Aug 2021 07:49 AM PDT

This morning I spilled water on my MacBook keyboard (Air, M1) I turned it immediately off and tried the clean it with a paper towel, it turned right back on since I touched the keys (what a stupid concept) Cleaned it, turned it back off and left it open face down on a few paper towels. 8 hours have passed and the towels are still completely dry. Should I wait a day or two more, or I'm good to go?

WINDOWS TO MAC: 3 months with M1 Air

    Posted: 11 Aug 2021 06:16 PM PDT

Just the other day I realised that I have been using the Apple M1 Macbook Air for more than 3 months now and I would like to share my personal experience switching from a long-time Windows to Mac for the past three months.

So first off, a little over 3 months ago, I finally made the switch from Windows to Mac and bought the Apple Macbook Air with the new Apple M1 silicon processing chip. The version I got is the base model Rose gold edition with 8GB ram and 256GB SSD internal storage.

In the beginning, the learning curve was pretty steep, as I needed to re-aligned myself with a brand new OS, interface and shortcuts. But since then, I have been using the M1 Air for almost everything, from my script-writing, to my editing works, to youtube, netflix etc. except for gaming, which I will still do on my Lenovo Legion 5 gaming laptop.

Now before I begin, I wanna say that I won't be doing any benchmark tests and any of those stuffs. I will just be sharing my opinion about this laptop as a normal laptop user. And hopefully my opinion will be able to help you decide whether this is the right one for you, from a casual long-time Windows user perspective and to avoid getting my tongue tied, I will just call the Apple M1 Macbook Air as M1 Air.

    #1 Ports

Two USB-C ports. Yes! Two. and the 35mm headphone jack. So three. That's all you have to utilize. After using one port to power up the laptop, you only have one port left for…. The rest of your usb devices!

Now, being a long-time Windows user who is always pampered with all kinds of ports, like RJ45, HDMI, USB-C, USB-A, DP, VGA, SD card slots etc.

This is the very first thing I needed to get used to, since I switched from Windows to Mac

But of course, the issue can be easily resolved with an external USB-C hub. The one I am using is from Ugreen 9-in-1 USB-C hub with PD, which I bought from Shopee Singapore for around $50. Those of you who are interested, I will drop the link in the video description below.

But then again, if you are someone who wants to travel with your tech & bring as little things as possible or you hate bring all kinds of dongles, docks and stuffs, then you might wanna re-think.

    #2 Display

Screen-wise, the M1 Air has a wide-gamut display that supports P3 colour space. It has 2560×1600 pixels and a maximum brightness of 400 nits, which is brighter than my Lenovo Legion 5 at 300 nits. Over the past 3 months, it has been a joy using the screen for editing, work and video bingeing. In fact, most of the time, I only set the screen at 40-50% brightness.

The screen doesn't open up 180 degrees like my Lenovo Legion 5 and also, Apple doesn't offer any touchscreen options for laptops, which isn't available on my legion 5 but other Windows laptops offer options to add touch-screen capabilities.

    #3 Audio

The M1 Air comes equipped with pretty good built-in stereo speakers which are pretty loud as well — Audio has a wide soundstage and is balanced overall. Vocals are very clear and crisp. With three built-in microphones, it's also not an issue if you choose to use the laptop's mic for all your voice and video calls.

I would say that a lot of Premium Windows laptops have built-in speakers and built-in microphones which are far worse than the M1 Air.

    #4 Webcam

Even though the M1 Air comes equipped with a 720p built-in webcam, which, purely based on paper specs, is identical to the built-in webcam on my Lenovo Legion 5 but when I used both laptops to join the same Zoom session, the Apple M1 processor seems to make me look better on-screen when compared with the Legion 5. The M1 Air webcam offers better colours, better skin tone, and an overall brighter picture.

    #5 Touchpad

Oh My Gosh! Personally, this is THE BEST built-in touchpad ever! The glass touchpad is sensitive, smooth and pin-point accurate. A lot of times I can actually do my work without the need to use my Logitech mouse, except for video editing, which I need to do a lot of back and forth scrubbing. What about you? What do you think? Do you feel there are laptops with far better & superior built-in touchpads, tell me about it in the comments section below.

    #6 Keyboard

Comparing the typing experience on the M1 Air magic Keyboard with my Lenovo Legion 5 truestrike keyboard, I would say that both are very comfortable to type on for long hours. Key travels are pretty similar and so far, I have no personal preference on this.

    #7 Heat

When I use the M1 Air on my lap, while writing the script, watching videos, or doing my work, I notice the M1 Air get a little warm. But not to an unpleasant degree and I also don't need to worry of any downward facing fans blowing hot air directly at my lap since the M1 Air doesn't have a fan.

I will never put my Lenovo Legion 5 on my lap because I don't wanna get my lap "fried".

#8 Hardware Accessories support & upgrades

Apple & 3rd party companies do offer some great computer hardware options & accessories to match with my M1 Air. But the issue is that selection is not only pricey, but it's also limited as compared to Windows.

One example is Multi-monitor support. Technically speaking, the M1 Air only supports 1 external monitor. If I wish to connect 2 or more Monitors to my M1 Air, I will need to get external display dock which support DisplayLink technology and install DisplayLink driver in my M1 Air.

Besides that, my M1 Air offers almost zero DIY upgrades, whereby my Legion 5 allows me to upgrade Rams, Storage, Wifi card and even replace the battery to a larger capacity if needed.

    #9 Performance

Now, the most important aspect — performance. Being a long-time Windows user, I have no regrets switching from Windows to Mac because it's much faster and lasts longer, and this is also considering the fact that I was previously using the Lenovo Thinkpad T495s for work.

Exporting an edited 10-min 1080p video clip from iMovie usually takes less than 3 minutes on the M1 Air, whereas on my Lenovo Legion 5, it would take anywhere from 15 to 20 minutes. Considering that I am also using the Apple iPhone 12 mini, file sharing between my phone and M1 Air is a breeze, using the Apple Airdrop feature.

Besides that, I also don't need to worry about Battery performance. A fully-charged M1 Air, with screen brightness set at 50%, Wifi on, and multiple apps running, like Whatsapp, Telegram, Safari (With 5 tabs), Messages, Apple Music playing and editing a 1080p video in iMovie, it can last me at least 8 hours straight before I need to plug in the power at 10%. When compared to my Lenovo Legion 5, I would need to keep the charging port within reach every 2 hours.

Whenever I am working on my M1 Air for long hours, with multiple apps running in the background, I would only see the "colourful beachball" icon appearing if I need to initiate motion stabilization in iMovie but it will only appear for like 3 seconds and then it do not appear again.

Still, do keep in mind that I'm currently using the base model 8GB + 256GB storage configuration, so I can't speak for models with higher storage & specs.

When it comes to installing apps, I will however suggest against installing iOS and iPadOS apps even though they're now available on Mac. There are still many improvements to be made, so unless you're looking forward to experiencing messy layouts and buggy apps, it's best to just stick to your iPhone and iPad.

So at the end of the day, should you consider switching from Windows to M1 Air?

Let's look at the Pros and Cons.

    Pros:

Fast performance. Long battery life. Comfy Magic Keyboard. Improved webcam. Good built-in stereo speakers and mic. You can work on your lap. Apple Ecosystem. Tons of useful Pre-installed apps like iMovie, Preview, Garageband, Entire Mac office suite.

Cons: Not ideal for gaming. Display doesn't open up 180 degrees. Troublesome to connect 2 or more monitors. Lack future upgrades to Ram and SSD and customization. Lack of accessories and 3rd party hardware. Software installation is a few more steps than Windows. No touchscreen.

    Should You Buy?

Well, if you are like me, an iphone user, and to some of you who also own an iPad, not a hardcore gamer and need a laptop for work, then switching over to M1 Air, is a pretty simple choice. The M1 Air base model, 8-core CPU, 7-core GPU, 256GB variant, starts from S$1,449. The 8-core GPU, 512GB variant, starts from S$1,799. If you are a student, Apple offers some student discounts. Do approach your local Apple Store for further information.

But if you are not, then I would say that it is best for you to stick with Windows.

Will I keep the M1 Air?

As for me, I will definitely continue to use my M1 Air for work, videos, music, and video editing and use my Legion 5 for gaming.

So there you have it. Those are my personal thoughts about the Apple Macbook Air with the M1 silicon chip after 3 months of daily usage.

Please leave your thoughts or even a small review in the comments below. What do you think of the M1 Air? Are they worth the switch? Make sure you let me know in the comments below.

Feel free to check out my video review too :)

    Burn in like bug (chrome)

    Posted: 11 Aug 2021 03:38 PM PDT

I just got a MacBook retina 2012 used, the screen is perfectly fine and definitely has no burn in, but if I open chrome and then minimise it, it seems to leave a very dim image of it? It changes when open the window and change what's open and then close it again so definitely isn't burn in, but it looks exactly like it otherwise. Has anyone experienced this or have a fix for it?

Is a $400 2018 MacBook Air a good deal for a starter MacBook?

    Posted: 11 Aug 2021 03:21 PM PDT

I've found a deal on a 2018 MacBook Air and I was wondering if $400 is a good deal on one. Are there are different levels to them? Like in terms of components and internals. I'm a student who mostly does school work such as watching lecturers, typing up assignments, doing research and participating in zoom calls along with I like to watch sports and Netflix and browse the internet in general. My biggest worry is that in using my external monitor, keyboard and mouse all while on a zoom call and doing background research will slow it down.

    Thanks for any help!

Best external 1TB SSD for the MBP M1

    Posted: 11 Aug 2021 02:11 PM PDT

Hi. I am looking for the fastest and still portable external SSD for my new MBP, M1, I will be using it for Time Machine and I heard somewhere that to reach the highest speeds I need to get a thunderbolt 3 driver. I heard that the Samsung X5 is the best (but it's a bit expensive). Could you please recommend this or any other driver available in the market?

    Regards

    Longevity-related question

Is using a Samsung adapter (USB C to USB 2.0) okay for M1 MacBook Air?

    Posted: 11 Aug 2021 11:09 AM PDT

When I got my MacBook Air M1, I already had a USB C to USB 2.0 adapter that came together when I bought my Samsung Galaxy phone. The adapter is simple (only one port) since it's meant to be used for a phone. I've been using it with my MacBook for months now and didn't notice anything wrong so far.

However, I read recently that using third-party adapters is not okay and might damage the MacBook in the long run. I'm wondering if I should just get an official Apple adapter, but I've also heard that using a Samsung adapter is okay, so I'm not totally sure...

Has anyone used a third-party adapter like Samsung for USB C to USB 2.0 before? Would this be okay, or should I invest in an Apple adapter?
