[Meta] /r/Apple is looking for new moderators! Apply inside!

    Posted: 22 Jan 2019 02:00 PM PST

    Hey everyone!

We are once again looking to bring on new moderators to help with daily moderation tasks on /r/Apple.

At this time, we are looking to bring on about 4-5 new mods, although we may decide to change that number.

    Requirements

    • Your account must be at least 6 months old and you must have at least 500 cumulative karma
    • Must be active on /r/Apple and have a history of contributing positively to the subreddit (ie. not breaking rules and not coming here to troll)
    • Look forward to doing the "janitorial" work that is the bulk of what moderators do: removing and approving posts, clearing the modqueue, responding to modmail, helping people, maintaining order.
    • Willing to perform the majority of moderation work from a computer & install Moderator Toolbox (mod tools for mobile are terrible)
    • Willing to actively participate in our private subreddit
    • Previous moderator experience is helpful, but not necessary
    • Willing to submit to our Robot Overlords, Apple (/s), and be prepared to gain money from companies trying to push their agenda to the subreddit (/s)

    Application

The questionnare for the mod position can be found here: https://form.jotform.com/61604023252947

Applications will be open for 1 week and close on Tuesday January 30, at a time yet to be decided. Depending on how many applications we get, how long we take to decide on who has been successful will change. If you have any questions about what it's like to be a mod, or anything mod related, please feel free to ask.

    Best of luck!

Major iPhone FaceTime bug lets you hear the audio of the person you are calling, before they pick up

    Posted: 28 Jan 2019 03:44 PM PST

iOS Pro Tip: FaceTime the iCloud account of a noisy iPhone to remotely silence its incessant alarm/timer chime.

    Posted: 28 Jan 2019 06:31 AM PST

Suppose you have created life, and given this life both an iPhone and an iPad which they have carelessly left in the living room. The living room, of course, being well within very clear ear-shot of your bed, but not within physical reach. Also suppose that this genial half-wit has set up multiple tiered alarms on both devices in an attempt to wake up early despite the fact that they typically sleep through these alarms even when the iOS devices in question are positioned right goddamn next to them. When these alarms inevitably wake you (but not them) from your much needed rest, you can take your iPhone (positioned handily within reach) and FaceTime their iCloud account for a brief couple of rings. This will silence the alarms on their devices without you having to break the seal on your warm blankets. Then repeat every 15 minutes because they really wanted to get up early, today.

A person reported the Group FaceTime exploit to Apple, 9 days ago

    Posted: 29 Jan 2019 01:38 AM PST

    21 Jan 2019 - @MGT7500 on Twitter

My teen found a major security flaw in Apple's new iOS. He can listen in to your iPhone/iPad without your approval. I have video. Submitted b ug report to @AppleSupport...waiting to hear back to provide details. Scary stuff! #apple @foxnews

    https://twitter.com/MGT7500/status/1087171594756083713

This was nine days ago. The user said they reported it 10+ days ago.

Assuming that their reporting procedures work, then Apple's engineering team saw this and filed it to the side for the next scheduled point update. That's completely egregious behavior for a company which prides itself on privacy. They should've pulled Group FaceTime immediately for everybody on the affected iOS update via the server-side and issued a patch fix.

The best interpretation of this is that there was a breakdown of communications between Apple Support and Apple's engineering teams and the message simply didn't get passed along ... which would indicate a broken report system if something of this scale slipped through the cracks.

According to the person on Twitter, they sent it to all the links on Apple's Security Issues page https://twitter.com/MGT7500/status/1090163397788745728

I reported the bug there after registering as a developer (even though I'm not, I was told I could) and also emailed product-security@apple directly.
