Review: Apple Watch Sports Loop - 6 months later

    Posted: 20 Oct 2018 09:06 PM PDT

I bought the Apple Watch Sports Loop (Khaki) early April 2018 — almost as soon as they came out. While I actually love the versatility of the standard, silicone Sport Bands, I'd tend to get a rash around my wrist from sweat (or water if I'd just had a shower at the gym). That's why I was interested in trying out the Sports Loop when they were announced.

    Here's my review:

    The Good

    • Comfortable and breathable. It really is very comfortable. And it's something you'll only really notice after a few days (if you're comparing it to a Sport Band AND you do get rashes or itchiness around your wrist).
    • Casual yet versatile. I think they look great in general and are a bit more versatile than the Sport Bands (which can also blend in to a smart-casual outfit pretty well). It's not as "professional" as leather, but I only think it'd only REALLY stand out in a bad way in a proper suit. But I wear them with button-up shirts with rolled-up sleeves and chinos and feel it's fine.
    • Easy to take on and off. Self explanatory.
    • Easy to wrap around things. I've found a regular use for this in two cases;
      • Wrapping around my phone whenever I'm about to take a shower at the gym. I wrap the watch around my phone (with the watch face along the back) so I don't have to worry about it scratching the phone's screen. It's also a lot easier to find in my gym bag when they're both together.
      • Wrapping around my battery pack while charging. This is very useful if I need to charge my Apple Watch and put it in a bag. I have the Belkin Valet Power Pack which is pretty fantastic except there's nothing to secure the watch in place like Elevation Lab's BatteryPro. While you can still secure it with a Sport Band (I did for years), it's MUCH easier with the Sports Loop.
    • It doesn't stink surprisingly. I've washed this band once and it was in the first I bought it when I wanted to test it in the pool. But other than that it's gone over 6 months without a proper wash and it doesn't stink. That said, I don't recommend jumping into a pool with it because the chlorine smell DOES stick around for awhile.

The Bad (…or "The Annoying" is probably more appropriate…).

    • It takes awhile to dry if it's been soaked. This really isn't a surprise since it's made of fabric, but if you're used to jumping into water or the shower with your Apple Watch, this could be an annoying thing to get used to. I always take my watch off at night, but really got used to being able to keep it on throughout the whole day regardless of what I was doing. Having to remember to take it off when I'm having a shower after the gym, giving my daughter a bath or jumping into the pool is a little annoying — and if I'm in a public place like the gym, it's just one more thing I need to be mindful of (i.e. not leaving it on the sink or something like that).
    • The velcro IS showing wear-and-tear. Probably something most of you would care about knowing since this is basically Velcro (Apple calls it something different, but there are little hooks which catch on to little loops; sounds like velcro to me.).
      • After the past 6 months, I've used this band every single day and even now, it's never fallen off once even if the end catches on something. That said, the strength of the velcro is noticeably weaker and the "loops" are also starting fray a bit — I'm actually curious what it will be like in another 6 months and beyond. I've just bought a Black Sport Loop today, and you can really tell the difference between the strength of the loops when compared side-by-side.

    Would I recommend it?

For the comfort-factor alone, I think they're definitely worth it. I can't speak to the aftermarket versions floating around out there, though I only buy genuine ones now (or at least from brands I can rely on) because I've been disappointed with three different "cheaper" bands. I'm a three-strikes person.

So if you're after a comfortable band that'll let your skin breathe a bit, it's checking out.

    Hope this helps someone!

Watch charger for end of lightning cable?

    Posted: 20 Oct 2018 11:23 PM PDT

Why haven't they developed a add on dongle for the end of a lightning cable so we are not forced to carry an addition cable?

Looked pretty hard for what I'm asking about found the diskus and keychain chargers but I am looking more for just a item the same size and shape of a current charger with a lightning port to plug standard charging cable into.

    Females wearing 44mm?

    Posted: 21 Oct 2018 07:32 AM PDT

I'm having a hard time deciding on what size to order. I've tried google searching without much luck. I live ~10 hours drive from the nearest Apple store so trying on isn't an option, unfortunately.

I'm 5'4 with a larger frame - 7 inch wrists. Would the 44mm be too large? Anyone that owns one with wrists my size, pictures would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    Apple Watch S4 40mm Battery

    Posted: 21 Oct 2018 04:31 AM PDT

I've done as much research as I can into this and I'm still seeing pretty underwhelming battery life with the Apple Watch S4 40mm. I have many colleagues with Apple Watch S4 LTE and I've asked probably 20-30 of them about their battery life. A few with 40mm have similar health, but not all. Every single colleague with a 44mm has incredible battery life.

To put into perspective. I wake up at 7:00am every morning and put on my watch immediately. One colleague with a 44mm had taken theirs off charge from 100% at 10:00pm the night before, and worn it all night with a sleep tracker running and had 77% at 12:00pm the next day while I had 78%. That's a difference of 9 hours with only 1% extra used.

I had tried turning off Haptic Crown, Fall Detection, low and high heart rate alerts, stopped using Infograph or Infograph Modular, uninstalled every 3rd party application, and un-paired to reset the watch and setup as new, using the watch as little as I can in a day, disabling cellular altogether. When I setup as new I always wait about 4-5 days to let any indexing and syncing finish before "tracking" the battery. No matter what I do, I always take my watch off at 11:30pm at 10%-15%.

Is there anything else I'm missing that could be causing this discrepancy between the 40mm and 44mm? Of course the larger size will last longer, but the different I've seen is monumental, and significantly larger than the difference between the 38mm and 42mm. There could be a genuine software problem that may be fixed in the future, but I'm curious to see what others are experiencing.

Disclaimer: I know that Apple's battery page says that they expect 18-hours of battery given normal usage. That's 5.55% per hour on average leading me to believe that my watch should last until 1:00am before reaching 0% after waking up at 7:00am (not including Power Reserve). What's throwing me off is that with my Series 0 and Series 3, I could easily reach two full days without thinking. All apps loaded, paired Airpods throughout the day, 1hr workouts (which I no longer track) etc. It's the feeling of having downgraded my watch (considering the features I've had to disable to get it to last a full day reliably) that's bugging me. Apple's diagnostics on my watch also show it as healthy, so it shouldn't be a hardware issue.

I know I can see how charged it is with the widget, but I still forget to check and end up leaving it on too long. It would be nice if my phone could alert me. Anything like this?

    HR accuracy

    Posted: 20 Oct 2018 01:14 PM PDT

Just bought the Apple Watch series 4 today after seeing some good reviews. The smart features are cool but not the main importance for me. I wanted a watch to accurately track my HR when I train (lifting and sprints).

I did a heavy squat workout and compared the watch to my polar arm band which is extremely accurate. Polar OH1 and Apple Watch

The min/max are pretty close and the average is also spot on. There wasn't much lag following a set and the HR kept up with the polar. For an optical sensor, I was very pleased with the results the watch and may ditch my arm band completely.

I will do further testing to confirm accuracy. But for anyone who doesn't primarily do cardio type workouts, so far the watch seems good.

How to view the numbers to contact on Apple Watch

    Posted: 20 Oct 2018 04:36 PM PDT

Today my iPhone was stolen while I was at an amusement park. The person either immediately turned it off or put it on airplane mode from the lock screen. I have never synced my phone to the iCloud or backed it up to anything. I have accepted that I have probably lost its contents for good. However, I still have my applewatch. And it still has all my contacts. But it has them as the name of the contact and not the number. Is there a way to get the numbers off my watch? Even if I have to do it manually. Currently I cannot find a way to view the actual numbers. Is there a way to connect it to a computer? Any helpful advice would be most welcome.
