PSA Rice is NOT for fixing water damaged phones

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 03:07 AM PDT

Don't feel like making a whole long post on this, but let me link some videos that can explain better than I can:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yPeITOz2_YM

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=plmElKA6qKM

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UU5T0GOmfvE

This is not an argument. There is no science behind the idea that rice fixes water damage. If you dropped a phone in water, and put it in rice, and it worked after, it only worked because the water evaporated. You got lucky. The rice had no effect.

Basically in theory, water doesn't damage electronics. What does damage electronics is shorts that are created by water, and also mineral deposits left behind by non-pure water. Rice can't remove mineral deposits, and it can't stop shorts from happening when a live phone is dropped in liquid. Tl;Dr RICE IS FOR DINNER.

Should I cancel my Genius Bar apppointment for battery service?

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 06:32 PM PDT

About a week ago my 2015 MacBook Pro started showing the "service battery" alert. Since my apple care expires in 9 days on October 31, I set up a service appointment at the nearest Apple Store for tomorrow evening. Today, the alert randomly disappeared and the battery condition appears as "normal."

Confused, I downloaded coconut battery and see that my battery is at 82% of design capacity for 686 cycles. It says the status is good.

If I go to my appointment, will the apple genius be able to do anything for me, assuming the battery status still shows as "normal" tomorrow? As my extended apple care is nearly expired, I would prefer to get a new battery if possible. Would they be willing to do that considering the situation? Just a college student trying to preserve my laptop for as long as possible. Thanks in advance for any advice!

Issues copying files to USB drive

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 10:17 PM PDT

I have no experience with macs, so this is driving me nuts. Please bear with me...

MacBook Air, OS X El Capitan version 10.11.6

I'm trying to move pictures to a USB drive. I go to "All Photos" in photos, select a bunch, and drag into the USB drive in finder.

    • for jpegs, the file seems to get compressed. For example, when I check the size of a jpeg in photos it's 1.5MB, when I check the dragged copy in the USB drive, it's 1.3MB...

    • PNGs just get converted to JPEGs automatically.

    • then there's HEIC files??? Which has a corresponding MOV file created with it???

So after waiting for 10GB of pictures to transfer (with no indication that I could see except for the increasing file size of the folder), I find all these MOV and HEIC files along with the everything else...

What do I do? Tried finding the files on the mac itself without using the photos app and had no luck, but again I'm pretty much clueless when it comes to using Macs.

Pretty sure it's not the drive's format either, "MS-DOS (FAT32)"

    Please help

Furious with my Macbook Pro (2017)...

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 05:47 PM PDT

So far, My Macbook Pro 13 inch (2017) has been working fine. Although I had to change the screen once because it fried last year when I bought it, I had it under warranty and everything was under control. Well, as it turns out when I installed Mojave about a week ago, this happened....(See the link below) Every time I turn this thing on, about two hours later, that thing shows up even though I'm doing simple things like web browsing. I'm beyond mad that this thing that I paid for a year, now, after my warranty is ended, now this happened. They say that I have to replace my screen again, which is mind bending. So, redditors, can anyone help me in fixing this or do I have to replace my screen yet again and spend 700 bucks? And did anyone else, did something similar happened??? (P.S; I even clean installed it again, no dice.)

    Possible to change country code?

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 08:41 PM PDT

I bought my MacBook Pro Retina in Japan many years ago. I recently moved back to Canada and was wondering if it was possible to change the country code that is shown here. It shows as JP and I read online that supposedly it grabs the country code from the router...? Since I moved to Canada, i'm using my ISP's router, which is obviously in Canada, and created a new wifi network to use here. Here's the error I receive in Wireless Diagnostics.

Is this country code on the wifi card itself? I was actually going to buy a 2013 MBPr AirPort card to use in my 2012 MBPr but got concerned that if the card i get is from China or Taiwan, it might not work here in Canada...in my Japanese MBPr.

AppleCare+ and Heavily Scratched iPhone X Screen. Can someone chime in?

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 02:38 PM PDT

Hi all. I have had my iPhone X since launch. I bought AppleCare+ with it. Everything has been perfect, no drops. Couple weeks ago one of my dogs (Great Dane) batted my phone out of my hand in our basement. In panic I tried to catch it, which spooked my dog, who then jumped, landed on the iPhone face down and smothered it across the gritty concrete floor. No cracks, but heavily scratched on the front glass now.

I took it into Apple tonight with a Genius Bar appointment. I asked if they could replace my screen. Again, I have AC+ and I knew I had 2 accidental opportunities. I talked to 3 different people in the store. They all said I could NOT have the screen replaced because it's scratched and not cracked. I was very confused why that made a different if I had my warranties in place. One of employees told me in passing to just take it out front, crack the glass and walk back in. Then they could replace it.

So, what should I do? It seems like if it's cracked I can walk in with an appointment and they'll swap the glass. I will use 1 of my repair opportunities. Which is totally fine with me, that's why I got AC+ in the first place. Might as well use it. I could live with the scratches, but again...I'd rather just get new glass since it's $29 and in warranty.

Do I go tap the screen against the corner of a brick? Do I tap a nail into it? This feels so stupid.

Mojave Upgrade Loop - Retrieve Data

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 08:35 PM PDT

So I tried to upgrade my Late 2014 27" 5K iMac to Mojave on Saturday and have been stuck in the dreaded upgrade loop ever since. It will say "Installation in Progress. Calculating remaining install time..." for 10-12 hours without moving. I have tried everything I can think of - Restore Mode install, Internet Recovery Mode install, running First Aid on the HD (computer freezes after about 4-5 minutes of the First Aid process).

Machine had been running great with no issues prior to this...

Here's the thing - I think I could get this back working if I wiped the HD and installed fresh. Everything is replaceable on there except one thing - it's been 2-3 months since I backed up the photos that were on the machine and, during that time, we had our fourth child and those pictures are saved only there. Is there any way for me to get the files off the machine before doing the wipe and new OS install? I assume there are still intact.

[TECH SPECS] Is it worth getting a new laptop?

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 08:25 PM PDT

    Hi All,

I'm terrible with tech specs so I was wondering if someone could help me out (annnnd perhaps explain like i'm five).

I'm about to start my doctoral candidature and am thinking of treating myself to a new laptop. I'll probably be using a few statistical programs that seem to run quite well on my macbook pro retina (mid 2014), model number: MNYF2X/A.

I am thinking of going for something smaller, like the 12inch macbook that is currently out (Macbook 12 inch 256gb). Can someone please explain to me the difference between the two? Will the new one run faster or slower than the current one? Will I notice a difference in performance? (i don't care if there is no improvement, as I have been quite happy with this, and i'm only looking to upgrade to both treat myself, and for reasons of portability...... but don't want it to be a decrease in performance).

Sorry if this is lengthy or inappropriate for this sub! and thanks in advanced :)

TL;DR: will there be a change in performance if i buy the new macbook 12inch after using my macbook pro retina (mid 2014: model number - MNYF2X/A) for the last four years?

MacBook Pro 2015 touch pad seems stuck on right click, keyboard not working

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 08:03 PM PDT

So I wiped down my keyboard today, and for an hour or so, it worked perfectly afterward. Then, all of a sudden, my touch pad seemed to be stuck on the right click setting. The physical pad still clicked, but every time I tried to do a left click, the thing I selected would not show up, only the right click menu. So I turned the computer on and off, which brought me to the lock screen. When I tried to log in, my keyboard itself stopped working. Some letters seemed to work, but some output two letters at once, some delete letters, and some do nothing at all. The problem is, I couldn't tell you what these are outputting because Ive been trying to type in a "dotted" password. And then weirdly, when I connected a USB external keyboard to try to type, some of the letters on that keyboard don't work either! Does anyone have a fix? Does this sound like water damage? I really tried to wipe down the keyboard with a minimal amount of liquid, not more than I've ever used in the past.

Need help with iPhone not connecting to MBP!

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 07:33 PM PDT

So I'm trying to connect the iPhone as usual to my MBP 2016 w. Touchbar and after installing Mojave's(I'm on 10.14) I can't seem to connect my iPhone X to it. Every time I try it tells me it requires an update and after about 30s installing this pops up. Img: (Sorry don't know what's wrong with Imgur rn, I'll upload it later but it says "Cant currently install because it is not currently available from the software update server) Any info on what I can do to solve I do use a HooToo as an adapter between my usb type c port and my lightning cable but it has always worked before Mojave.

I have 2 broken iPhone 6's. What is the best way for me to sell them for parts, and how much can I expect to get for them (what are they worth)

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 01:22 PM PDT

One has a crack on the screen and dead battery, other is slightly bent so has ducked up screen. Neither can be turned on or used to my knowledge so they would just be for parts

    *** Panic Report ***

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 07:15 PM PDT

Running a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013) and upgraded to Mojave over the weekend and a few minutes ago the system crashed. I've been getting a low disk space message and I'm trying to clean out some files.

Trying to figure out if it's something to worry about or a one-time occurrence?

Need to factory reset an iMac mini but do not know the admin password

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 07:10 PM PDT

Hi! I inherited an iMac mini (mid 2010). I do not know the password (and I can't ask the deceased owner). I need to factory reset but wasn't sure how to do that without admin privileges. Thanks in advance!

An annoying rare issue: How can I download a version of an app that is local to a certain country, given that I have already purchased that app from a different country?

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 03:18 PM PDT

I'm currently in China trying to download Didi (the transportation app), but because I downloaded the "western" version of Didi in Canada long ago (and deleted it because it wasn't useful to me back then in Canada), the App Store has it in my purchase history, and its search result continues to show me the "western" version (which lacks many features compared to the Chinese version, such as bike sharing).

While trying to download the Chinese version, I am NOT in the Canadian App Store - I am in the Chinese App Store (using a different Apple ID with China set as the country), which shows a bunch of Chinese apps (see proof here: https://imgur.com/a/S5L4Cpl), but the problem is, every time I search for "滴滴出行" (Didi's Chinese app) in the app store it STILL shows the English version called "Didi - Greater China" (https://imgur.com/a/7ptFdxp).

Why is this? Is it because Didi is in my purchase history? I want to erase this purchase history, but I believe that in the App Store I can only hide it.

I would like to download the Chinese version of Didi (among other apps), not the English "western" version.

I noticed that this problem applies to my other apps as well. For example, in Canada, using the Canadian App Store, I downloaded Mobike (a Chinese bike sharing app), and deleted it. Now that I'm in China using the Chinese App Store with a different Apple ID, when I search for "摩拜单车" it's still showing the English Mobike! But I want the one local to my country (Chinese one), not the western version.

Does anyone know how to solve this issue? Any help would be super appreciated!

Check back later on shared iCloud photos

Why would it be saying this? How do I access these photos that have been shared with me?

    Thanks

Spotlight on my iPhone isn’t helping. Is there a way to customize it?

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 12:09 PM PDT

In prior versions of iOS, there was a panel in settings where you could adjust what kind of data would come up in a spotlight search. But I'm having trouble finding it now in iOS 12.0.1.

What's actually happening is that I'm trying to use Spotlight to search for a contact that is in my phone, but instead of finding me the contact the name of which I've typed in exactly, it shows map search results, emails, text messages in which I mention the business, basically everything imaginable except the data I'm actually looking for.

Siri is similarly confused about this contact; it tries and fails to search maps, or misinterprets the name as a different kind of data. I'm specifically talking about a company which is called "A joyful dog" and Siri doesn't care that I have a contact by that name, she seems to think I'm asking her to find a dog that is joyful to call and finds the request understandably perplexing. Smart enough to get it wrong.

I have this problem with other contacts as well, though. Anything that sounds sort of like a business it searches Maps instead and comes up dry if I'm not presently within a mile or so of the business as I seldom am. What's the point of having an address book of my phone can't see it and always tries to look elsewhere?

So at the moment I find that for this frequently needed contact I can't get to it be Siri or by spotlight and instead I have to manually open contacts and search within there, which is almost as needlessly cumbersome as posting to Applehelp for a setting that used to be easy to find.

I'd like to just set Spotlight search to not try and do so much. Leave out emails and texts and map results - I'm happy to search those from their respective apps - but give me frequently needed data like contacts. How can I tailor the results that Spotlight provides?

Working on Mid 2012 MacBook Pro 13in, Questions on RAM and Storage

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 05:59 PM PDT

    hey guys,

first time on this sub so please be merciful if this isn't the right place to ask or if this may have been asked before, i couldn't find anything.

to make a long story short, i dropped my macbook in i'll say freshman year of college in 2015 and have now just fixed the issue that had to do with the HDD cable. great! got it working and i don't feel so shitty about breaking a gift my dad got me for my birthday when i was like 16.

anyways, it is ABYSMALLY slow. i have no idea why its so damn slow cause i don't remember it ever being this slow. i mean it may be secondary to the damage due to the drop but i physically couldn't see any damage to the HDD, but maybe there's damage within. moving on, i want to upgrade the RAM from 4GB to 8GB or possibly 16GB depending on if the price is right and not too much. the thing is i've only been able to find crucial RAM that is made specifically for apple laptops i guess? or are there other options for RAM? i'm quite open to anything and i do have experience with computers, just recently built my own gaming rig so i'm comfortable uninstalling and reinstalling the RAM.

now the HDD i also want to remove and put an SSD instead. i'm currently in the process of backing up the HDD data of very old high school photos to my google cloud, but other than that none of the other information on this computer is relevant. i figure i could just then remove the HDD from the laptop and install an SSD. question is- will any SSD currently out there like a samsung 860 2.5 SATA 1TB be supported or does crucial have to be the brand for this as well?

here are the specs from the "About This Mac" tab:

    • macOS High Sierra 10.13.6
    • MacBook Pro 13-in Mid 2012
    • Processor 2.5GHz Intel Core i5
    • Memory 4GB 1600 MHz DDR3
    • Intel HD Graphics 4000 1536 MB

honestly, i'm just working on this thing for fun and to feel good about myself, i don't really plan on using it too much as i'm shooting to get a windows supported laptop instead as well as a samsung phone (sorry apple) but i would sincerely appreciate and all help any of you could provide!

question about dual external monitored and a 15 inch macbook pro

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 12:00 PM PDT

I have been trying to figure out how I might be able to run two externalmonitors off my MBP (2018) 15 inch. I currently have one external monitor and am using the built in display for the other one. Im not incredibly technical but I believe I have two "dvi" connectors that go to each monitor. All of my googling has been for naught. Is there a way to do this? Thank you for all the help :)

Apple Watch Series 4 with iPhone 6 Plus

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 05:49 PM PDT

I'm considering buying a Series 4 watch (44mm) to pair with my almost 4 year old iPhone 6 Plus. I know that they're compatible, but is there any concerns about the phone bottlenecking the performance of the watch due to it's age? I don't want to drop $400 on the watch to find that I won't get the most out of it until I spend >$700 on a new phone too.

    Mojave download stuck/frozen at installation.

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 11:49 AM PDT

Started to download process around 1100MST on 21 Oct and it has been a full 24 hrs of "Installation is in progress. Calculating time remaining...". I need to know what to do now, because it should not be taking this long for install.

It is a 2017 IMac with only 100Gb on it. I have looked at other issues and resolutions but would like a better answer. I know when it comes to OS installations turning the system off could cause issues. Any guidance is great.

    Thank you.

    Transfering to another Apple ID

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 05:46 PM PDT

    Hi!

I'm planing on changing to a new Apple ID. I was wondering if anybody knows if it's an easy process regarding my devices and all of it's containing data. I've got tons of pictures on my iCloud and a lot of school documents saved on there.
My goal is to basically have everything the same just on a new Apple ID. Is this possible and what should I expect?

    Thanks in advance!

17" 2009 Macbook Pro with Intel Chip - Which Mac OS should we install to get it as current as possible?

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 04:56 PM PDT

As far as I know, we can get that machine working all the way up to El Capitan. What MacOS can I install to get us there? I am having a hard time getting the machine set up with ANY of the Mac OS discs I have, ranging from 10.2 to 10.6.

What are my options to get this machine working? Thanks.
