    Trackpad not registering tap clicks

    Posted: 12 Nov 2021 10:11 PM PST

Boy oh boy if you're gonna mess something up in a new OS release don't let it to literally the most fundamental input between the user and machine

Are there any signs of Apple addressing this widespread problem? Is there a beta out people have tried?

If I had to guess I think they just have a low sampling rate for the trackpad. It saves battery life and they've shown to prioritize that highly, if in this case too much

Has anyone tried using an external mouse with a higher polling rate?

How to smooth the scroll speed

    Posted: 12 Nov 2021 08:24 PM PST

On Monterray I'm getting too little scroll when I scroll (on my mouse wheel) a little. Then too much when I do a big scroll motion. I would like it to be more linear. Is there any way to smooth it out?

Trackpad Tap-to-click option on MacBook Air 13" (2017) not working properly on macOS Monterey 12.0.1

    Posted: 12 Nov 2021 06:34 PM PST

    Hi everybody!

Since last Tuesday, I've had this issue with my MacBook Air 13" (2017) running macOS Monterey. Sometimes the tap-to-click with trackpad gets laggy or simply doesn't work. I need to tap 2 times to click something on screen. This has been driving me crazy these days. I've tried by installing a clean software update but still doesn't work as good as it was on previous OS. Is anyone having the same issue and/or know if it's reported to Apple?

Opening files always defaults to column view within an application. I want list view!

Opening files always defaults to column view within an application. I want list view!

In any app, when I go to open a file <cmd><o>, it always defaults to column view. Changing the default view in the finder <cmd><j> has no impact. How can I change the default view when I go to open a file through an application?

Unable to download the latest macOS Big Sur installer

    Posted: 13 Nov 2021 01:45 AM PST

I am on a mid-2015 15" MBP (supported) running macOS Mojave 10.14.6 and I am unable to download the most current Big Sur update from the App store link: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/macos-big-sur/id1526878132?mt=12. I have downloaded the Big Sur installer multiple times in succession on the same OS build in the past, but since last week I have been unable to download it.

    • I have no ignored software updates
    • softwareupdate --fetch-full-installer isn't a thing on Mojave
    • SUS Inspector only goes as far as 11.5.2
    • Error message: "Update not found - The requested version of macOS is not available."

Is anyone else having a similar problem? All servers appear to be operational for Apple's side.

    M1 MacBook weird behavior

    Posted: 12 Nov 2021 05:00 PM PST

I have an M1 MacBook Air and on Monterey. My first mac. When the laptop is open with the screen off presumably sleeping, sometimes the display glows and the cursor is visible for maybe a second and it disappears. Idk what causes it. Is it something running in the background. Is it Normal? It's hard to catch to take a photo but I'll try.

Folder backup to USB for macOS

    Posted: 12 Nov 2021 03:26 PM PST

    Hi all

Google is giving me nothing. I currently run a Mac Mini running macOS Monterey as a file server in my house. It's backed up to an encrypted drive through Time Machine, and also backed up to the cloud with Backblaze.

However, there's one particular folder in it which holds family documents (<500MB), and I'm the only person in my family who uses a computer.

My use case is this: I'd like to have a USB thumb drive sticking out the back of it, which is holding an up-to-date copy of this folder, labelled "Family", so I can tell them "if I get hit by a bus, just pull out that thumb drive and you'll have everything" without them needing to work out how to use passwords to get into the services backing everything up.

I'm struggling to find a bit of software on macOS that backs up a single folder with no bells and whistles. I don't need versioning, and it's not for the whole drive. Just the contents of this one folder running a backup once a day or so. Preferably free or a couple of dollars.

    Does anyone have any recommendations?

    Thanks again in advance :)

    IINA vs Movist Pro? [2021]

    Posted: 13 Nov 2021 01:09 AM PST

I want to know the benefits of having Movist Pro instead of IINA? Currently, I am using IINA because it's cool and FOSS. But I found still people will pay for the Movist Pro! so what's the real advantage of paying for Movist Pro? Why are people paid for it when there is a free alternative available? Does it make it a better media player than IINA from any aspect?

    Controller Button Remapping in MacOS

    Posted: 13 Nov 2021 12:54 AM PST

I would like to play some Apple Arcade games on my Mac, but my disability makes it hard with some default layouts. I cannot find an option to change controller buttons in MacOS. You can do it in iOS and iPad OS...

I found some remapping software, but it is either to rebind buttons to keys/mouse clicks (not button A to button B), or is not compatible with Monterey...

    Any ideas?

    Mac OS Monterey loading times

    Posted: 12 Nov 2021 11:51 PM PST

After updating to Mac OS Monterey I noticed that my Mac started to load much slower than usual. It takes almost four minutes (around 3:40 to be exact) from the moment when I enter my password in the password prompt, to the moment when the dock icons appear. Other than that I don't notice any speed differences. I have 2017 iMac with top of the line CPU for the time (i7700), and Blackmagic Speed Test gives me around 2.5-2.7 GB/s ssd reading speeds which are also should be sufficient. FileVault is enabled. Does anyone else have a similar issue? Could you please share any advice on how to improve this? I don't reboot very often usually, but 12.0.1 update broke sleep mode for me, and now my Mac wakes up every few minutes after I put it in sleep mode. So I started to turn it off and that issue suddenly became very noticeable.

What external monitor should I ideally use with M1 MacBook Air?

    Posted: 12 Nov 2021 09:14 AM PST

Hello everyone, I've recently entered the amazing world of MacOS but with an unpleasant surprise.

My DELL P2720DC 2K external monitor does not output super crispy sharp text like it used to do with my windows laptop. I've managed to improve the problem by using 3rd party software for disabling font-smoothing and adjusting the monitor's settings but the result is not ideal since I'm a software engineer and I read a lot of text throughout the day.

By searching on the web I realised that apple doesn't love quite much big displays with low PPI. I guess 27"-2K is one of these. So my question is if I replace my monitor with a 27"-4K will I have the desired outcome? Also, in such case will the text be normal size or will be text for ants? I ask this because till now I had the impression that 27" is relatively small for 4K and bigger resolutions and because of that you would get very small text.

    Thanks a lot.

    Better alternative for Finder/spotlight

Has anyone had issues with items being removed from Login Items and not starting up?

    Posted: 12 Nov 2021 06:53 PM PST

For example, in the past week I've added Better Touch Tool several times and it keeps getting removed and I don't know why. I also noticed a moment ago that the backup program I've been using for month hadn't started -- because it was no longer in Login Items.

Googled and searched reddit and no sign of info on this. Upgraded to Monterey in the last couple of weeks and currently on 12.0.1.
