Is the keyboard on the new Macbook Pro 14 different from the keyboard on the current Macbook Air?

The only noticeable difference is that the fn keys on the Pro are full size, while they are smaller on the air. But are there any other differences in key travel or anything between the two models?

Looking to buy an Air for my daughter, have a few questions (also in Canada for sale questions)

    Posted: 08 Nov 2021 07:49 PM PST

    Hi everyone,

So I'm looking at getting my daughter a MacBook Air as a Christmas/birthday present but I'm finding myself slightly out of my depth and I hope I can get some clarification.

Currently my daughter is in grade 11 at a fine arts school in the music program. She's looking to get a laptop that will bridge her school with her light gaming.

She is running a windows laptop currently. It's a 7 year old ACER E5-771G-54N6 with an Nvidia GeForce 840m.

My assumption is that any of the air models will do well in comparison to this ancient beast, so I don't foresee a need to jump on getting the 8 core version, but here's a list of some of the things she plays with some regularity:

    • Stardew Valley
    • GTA5 (which I've read can run at 720p, a far improvement over what she's currently running)
    • Random indie games
    • Genshin impact

She's not a huge AAA gamer and has stated how much she likes the MacBook Air. She's used her schools to do some composition and it's been a treat for her.

However I'm trying to clarify a few things:

    • will 8GB ram be enough? I know adding ram later is a PITA, but $200 is a lot.
    • I've seen only a small difference in performance between the 7 and 8 core GPU, so I'm assuming it's safe to stick with the 7 even with the gaming she's doing above
    • Same with SSD size. Considering the price jump, I don't foresee there being too big of an issue here since sticking an external SSD into the system.
    • Is there even a slight chance of a Black Friday deal/offer in Canada? I'm not expecting much but I wouldn't sneeze at even a modicum of a drop or a discount on something like the new AirPods

I have been trying to weigh the options. I know there are some good sales for the i5 version, but seeing the massive jump in performance between the two, and the fact that I'm hoping this computer lasts her quite a few years, at least through university. I'd rather pay a few hundred more for a long lasting system.

    Macbook Accessories for protection

    Posted: 08 Nov 2021 03:31 PM PST

    Hi everyone,

I just bought my first Macbook Air m1 (16/256). My previous laptops used to be cheap/used machines, and were quite durable, so I never took too much care of them. But, this is the most expensive laptop I have bought, so I want to be careful.

I want to use this machine for the next 4 years, and for that, I want it to protect from any kinds of damage. So, what types of accessories should I buy to protect my macbook ? Should I buy a screen protector? A laptop sleeve? A hard case? Please let me know, and if possible, add links below too.

    Webdev computer choice

    Posted: 08 Nov 2021 10:34 PM PST

I'm in my first year of school, and have an M1 air 8GB that has sufficed me well along with a cheap HP windows laptop for Python and learning HTML/CSS/JavaScript so far. I use visual studio and it's a wonderful experience. Next semester I'm taking C# and I have a technical elective that I was debating on an intro game design course.

I bought the base 14" with the rest of my grant money and am still within the return window, and I'm having second thoughts.

The pro is a BEAUTIFUL and AMAZING machine, but I'm starting to wonder if because I'm doing webdev it's a bit overkill. I was debating on just getting an other air with 16GB, but when I saw the pro I fell in love.

I guess the question is, is this machine extreme overkill? Should I return it, get the air & a better windows laptop? I'm unsure of my needs for my next year of school as well, so any advice there would be extremely helpful.

    MacBook Pro supply in UK

    Posted: 08 Nov 2021 02:39 PM PST

Was looking to purchase a base spec M1 Pro 14" in the UK, using Apple's student discount offer and trade in. However, no Apple stores have any stock and delivery is now 4-weeks if ordered online... Global shortage or just in the UK?

Whats a decent display I can pair with my 2021 macbook pro? (Can I use my late 2014 iMac)

    Posted: 08 Nov 2021 02:16 PM PST

I'm a noob to displays, and sharing a laptop to mac - looking for a decentish display to buy (doesn't need to be fancy, just reliable).

And/or is it possible to pair to my iMac 2014? I still use the iMac though, so I'd need to be able to easily switch between porting to it, and using it directly.

    Any thoughts would be great.

USB-C + high refresh rate display for Macbook

    Posted: 08 Nov 2021 02:09 PM PST

I'm waiting for my M1 Macbook Pro to arrive. My current setup features an AOC AGON AG271QG which doesn't have USB-C (only DP and HDMI) but, on the other hand, it's a 27-inch 2K monitor with 165Hz refresh rate which, once you get used to, you can't go back to 60.

I was wondering if there's a monitor that has similar specs (2+K 100+Hz) that also features USB-C with proper power delivery (60+W) as well as a USB hub and an (optional) Ethernet and headphone/mic combo jack.

Something like Dell U2722DE but with high refresh rate.

I know I can just buy a Thunderbolt dock like CalDigit but was wondering if there's a more all-in-one solution already built into the monitor.

My M1 MacBook Pro's battery drains 40% faster than its usual

    Posted: 08 Nov 2021 03:47 AM PST

My M1 MacBook Pro I bought two months ago used to stay for up 18 hours of chrome usage but currently, it cannot stay over 12 hours in any situation just using chrome and the battery health is still 100% so is that a problem with my battery? Also i noticed that problem before upgrading to Monteray

What does "12 h Power" in Activity Monitor display?

    Posted: 08 Nov 2021 05:40 AM PST

At first I thought it was a percentage of something but then I saw Sourcetree app showed a number of 146.22 and drained my 100% battery in a few hours in Macbook M1 Pro.

I get that lower is better but I'm just curious what does the number represent?

Anyone has an issue with watching twitch on safari lately?

    Posted: 08 Nov 2021 12:50 AM PST

It used to be extremely efficient, last longer, with no ads(AdGuard on). For the past few days, it seems that it's lagging badly when watching twitch and costing more energy. Anyone is having the same problem?

External monitor for MacBook Air M1. What should I get? I was attracted by UWQHD monitors, but I gather M1 macs don’t support HiDPI on those, while if I understand right they support it on >= 4K monitors. Is this right? Is a 4K monitor a safe bet in terms of HiDPI on Apple silicon?

Mouse lag with external monitor (2021 MB Pro + adaptor)

    Posted: 08 Nov 2021 12:49 PM PST

My home setup uses a Sony Bravia (OLED/4k) as an external monitor. My POS HP PC Laptop works with it just fine, but my 3 month old MB Pro is laggy AF with it. I use an Anker "PwerExpandDirect" with the HDMI slot, and the mouse is about 10-15ms delayed, on multiple resolution settings.

I cant switch to a dedicated adaptor since I have an external keeb/mouse + power to have attached (which my shitty PC easily supports with ports to spare). Since swapping the mac out with a pc eliminates all issues, ive ruled out everything except the adaptor or the mac itself.

    Is this fixable?

M1 MacBook Air vs M1 MacBook Pro - Same configuration - Which is better?

    Posted: 08 Nov 2021 06:16 AM PST

Having a hard time choosing between the MacBook Air or MacBook Pro, configured near the same:

    • MacBook Air - $1449
      • 8 core CPU
      • 8 core GPU
      • 16GB unified memory
      • 512GB SSD
    • MacBook Pro - $1499
      • 8 core CPU
      • 8 core GPU
      • 16GB unified memory
      • 256GB SSD

I don't think I need the extra storage in the Air, I keep all of my photos and edits on an external drive anyways.

I can't really find any performance comparisons using these two configs, most of them are the base config in the Air and base config in the Pro. Also, it's even harder to find good comparisons between these 13" models now that the 14" is out. In real world situations, will I notice the extra thermal capability of the Pro? Will I notice the better speakers or mics in the Pro? Are there any other differences I should keep in mind?

    M1 Pro 10C CPU 10C GPU 32g RAM vs. M1 Max 10C CPU 24C GPU 32g RAM vs. M1 Max “…” 64g RAM for HEAVY Photoshop work?

    Posted: 08 Nov 2021 12:02 PM PST

As the title states, I'm torn between the above three models. I do heavy graphic design work in PS and Illustrator with files ranging from 3-10GB and hundreds of layers, smart filters, effects, etc sometimes multiple at the same time. Every YouTube reviewer video I'm finding is strictly basing their benchmarks on video editing, gaming, or modeling, which I do none of.

Another thing to note is I'm upgrading from a 2014 3.4ghz i7 so really anything will be an upgrade but I'd really like to future-proof myself as much as I can without spending too much over $3k.

    Problem big sur

    Posted: 08 Nov 2021 11:53 AM PST

So i updated my 2019 Macbook air to Mac OS big sur a month ago (i know its late but better late than never). I also recently took out an iCloud subscription to easily work between all my devices via desktop sync. But at some point I started to notice that files automatically disappeared from my desktop without me doing anything, I couldn't find them in the trash, and they weren't hidden anywhere in one of my many folders. Is this a bug or is there a setting wrong? Has anyone else had this problem and what should I do about it?

Will MBA m1 wake from Bluetooth devices when the lid is closed?

    Posted: 08 Nov 2021 05:14 AM PST

    I have a almost brand new MacBook Pro 2020 i5 16gb 1tb - what should I do?

    Posted: 08 Nov 2021 02:14 AM PST

I'm an economics/ business student with an interest in music production with logic. I bought it when it came out and used it plenty for school work, logic and gaming with an egpu (which I sold since I moved abroad to study). Apple recently repaired/ replaced the entire topcase for free, so other than the display it's in brand new condition. I've always wanted a 14" form factor but don't need the performance (if at all I would go for the base model). What would you do in my position? Sell it (haven't used it since repair/ where, how much?), continue using it, go for MacBook Air M1, go for 14" base model or wait for the rumored air (the fan on my old late 2012 MacBook is on all the time, it's struggling a lot)? Appreciate any feedback!

    Macbook KVM woes

    Posted: 08 Nov 2021 10:44 AM PST

I recently purchased a KCEVE HDMI KVM Switch. According to their ad, it's compatible with Macs.

I tried to connect both a Windows PC and a Macbook to the switch to share a 4K monitor and keyboard/mouse.

The included HDMI cable produced flickering on the monitor, but it was fixed when I switched to a different cable.

When switched to the PC, everything worked fine. However, when switched to the Macbook, the display connected successfully but the keyboard and mouse were not able to work.

Both keyboard and mouse worked perfectly when directly connected to the Macbook.

How can I get the Macbook to work with the keyboard/mouse when switched to through the KVM?

    Specs:

    Windows PC

    Macbook Pro 2021

    LG 27UD88

    Logitech G710+ Keyboard

    Logitech G502 mouse

    Thanks!

Alternatively, does anyone have a solution or experience with what I'm trying to do?

I want to be able to connect my Windows PC and Macbook to the same monitor/keyboard/mouse. Issue I see with a lot of KVMs out there is that I have no idea if they will actually work with the Macbook despite their advertising, and my keyboard apparently uses 2 USB-A slots, and most KVMs only have 1 slot for keyboard.
