A terrible stepping stone guised by a noble cause - don't stop talking about CSAM Scanning, a TLDR!

It's ingenious really. Anyone going against it would seem pro CP, and the little "screeching minority" would burst out for a bit like when Amazon rolled out Sidewalk, and then it'd be unheard of in a good week. Ah Apple. The thing is, Amazon never advertised their cheap devices endorsing privacy. Oh, and it gets worse.

Sure, right now, they say it only scans CP. They say it only locally scans your pictures right before an iCloud upload.

But the technology exists, right there on your phone, behind iOS's closed source doors, and can be abused. Maybe now. Maybe years from now when there are entirely different people running Apple. But we know it can.

This is absolutely horrifying. We all know what happened when the Chinese government put pressure on Apple for iCloud data access - they obviously didn't stop selling devices in China, they had to compromise with servers physically in China. But that wasn't the end of the world, as people could just not use iCloud.

But this isn't the usual existing iCloud CSAM scanning. It's ON device, and at the whim of many terrible and corrupt governments, can be used to track and harass so many oppressed groups and protestors. Take the Indian government for example - they threatened to block WhatsApp, to get access to users e2e encryption. Luckily, that wasn't possible, but this, this is.

For a company that took privacy seriously, and all it took was one wrong move to make it all seem like marketing.

And since many companies follow suit with what Apple does, I'm afraid invasive surveillance like this might get more common. At least Android's open-source, and you don't have to use Google services if you don't want to, with a ton of privacy-focused ROMs.

I'm a bit sad that big YouTubers like MKBHD are keeping quiet about this, but hey if he breaks PR with Apple it'd mean no more interviews with Craig lol. Louis Rossmann has a great video about it, and props to him.

At the end of the day, the bad guys are going to purge their iCloud if they use it, and switch to something else - it's we that suffer.

How long do you plan on keeping your current iPhone?

    Posted: 15 Aug 2021 01:42 PM PDT

Just curious as to how long people are holding onto their iPhones these days. I went from the 4s to the 6 to the 8 Plus to the 12 Pro Max (3 years between each). I'm now thinking I may keep the 12PM for much, much longer. What about you?

I’m a 17 year old developer and my first app Svalinn is a free app to promote environmentally friendly lifestyles

    Posted: 15 Aug 2021 06:57 PM PDT

Hi. I'm a 17 year old developer and recently I launched my app Svalinn on the app store. The app is designed to promote environmentally friendly lifestyles and encourage acts from individuals to end climate change. I'm planning on adding support for the Apple Watch as well as adding many other new features in the future. If you have a chance to download it and have any suggestions I'd love to hear them! Additionally, within the app there is a tip jar to support development and this will unlock more customization options permanently. Thanks so much for taking the time to read this!!

Does anyone know the default messages sent to your emergency contacts when using Emergency SOS?

    Posted: 16 Aug 2021 02:20 AM PDT

Somehow I can't find this information anywhere on the internet and I'm curious as to what the specific messages sent to your emergency contacts are, both the initial message and the periodic location updates. If anyone knows, either because they're better at googling than me or from firsthand experience, I would appreciate it. If it means anything, I'm using the 2nd gen iPhone SE with the latest version of iOS 14.

How to set the preferred language of individual apps on iPhone, iPad and Mac

    Posted: 15 Aug 2021 10:26 PM PDT

With all the scanning controversy -- do these settings mean I'm not affected? iCloud settings still lists "Photos" as "On" in but "iCloud Photos" is explicitly set to Off. Thoughts?

How many of y’all if any bought a Touch ID iPhone during the mask mandate?

    Posted: 15 Aug 2021 02:34 PM PDT

Just as the title says how many of y'all switched back to or bought a Touch ID phone during the mask mandate? I switched from my 11 pro max back to my 8+ for the daily and haven't really gone back to a Face ID phone since, besides for pictures and video mostly. I carry multiple phones for personal and work reasons but my go to is my 8+ 99% of the time due to masks still being required at work places. After 4 years in my pocket it's still perfectly fine for everything I do besides the camera is a bit weak compared to my 12 pro max I got last year.
