Posted: 11 Aug 2021 06:00 AM PDT Hi r/Apple, welcome to today's megathread to discuss Apple's new CSAM on-device scanning. As a reminder, here are the current ground rules: We will be posting daily megathreads for the time being (at 9 AM EST) to centralize some of the discussion on this issue. This was decided by a sub-wide poll, results here. We will still be allowing news links in the main feed that provide new information or analysis. Old news links, or those that re-hash known information, will be directed to the megathread. The mod team will also, on a case by case basis, approve high-quality discussion posts in the main feed, but we will try to keep this to a minimum. Please continue to be respectful to each other in your discussions. Thank you! For more information about this issue, please see Apple's FAQ as well as an analysis by the EFF. A detailed technical analysis can be found here. [link] [comments]

Apple’s iMessage Is Secure … Unless You Have iCloud Enabled Posted: 11 Aug 2021 07:18 AM PDT Here's a RECENT how to configure iMessage so Apple does not have a copy of your encryption keys, unfortunately the only way to do so is to disable iCloud back-ups. interesting read. https://www.howtogeek.com/710509/apples-imessage-is-secure...-unless-you-have-icloud-enabled/ [link] [comments]

Are you sticking with iOS/iPadOS through the version 15 update? Posted: 11 Aug 2021 10:31 AM PDT This is not image scanning/backdoor specific - save that for the CSAM daily megathread. I'm talking about everything in version 15 (or missing from it), taken as a whole. What are your feelings on iOS/iPadOS going forward? Are you sticking with 14, moving to another platform, not concerned, or otherwise? [link] [comments]
Posted: 11 Aug 2021 01:54 PM PDT TLDR: Ubuntu is amazing, the PineTime is awesome, Ubuntu Touch on the Pixel 3a is amazing, but then I found out Verizon and most US carriers aren't supported on Ubuntu touch, meaning it's a non-starter. And without the phone I have to keep using my iPhone anyway. And if I'm using my iPhone still, may as well keep the Apple Watch too. And if I'm using those two, Mac OS works so well with them that I may as well go back… Maybe I'm weird, but I love ecosystems, and that's why Linux smartphones are so important. I wanted to switch fully, but I'm gutted to say Ubuntu touch let me down and until it's usable in the US, I'm switching back. I've grown up using apple products my whole life at this point, and I've never had much reason to leave. Now that I'm in college though I've been enjoying programming and tinkering with my devices more and more, and apple wasn't giving that to me. I've wanted to make the change for a while, but the only problem is my favorite thing about apple, the ecosystem. I know it's overblown by a lot of people, but I love being able to open my computer, shoot off a text, get a notification on my watch when I get a text and pick it up on my phone. But, this week when I heard about the new photo scanning system apple is introducing I realized it was finally time for me the switch. From everything that I have heard, Android is just as bad if not worse, so I did some research and found out about Ubuntu, Ubuntu touch and infinitime and how well they are all starting to work together, and I decided to go all in. I installed Ubuntu, bought the PineTime and ordered a second hand Pixel 3a XL, and got to work. Ubuntu on my laptop is great, but that's obvious because it's one of the most well polished Linux OS's. Infinitime on the PineTime is awesome too! At least three days battery with heavy use, and the notifications interaction with Ubuntu touch was looking great. Then came the one I was the most nervous about, Ubuntu Touch. I followed all of the instructions and after about an hour, my installation went perfectly! It booted, runs beautifully, and looks super fun! But then I go the message I was dreading the most: "no signal". After a quick search on the forum I realized there was something massive which I missed: "VoLTE is not supported by Ubuntu Touch", meaning that unless I (and my entire family) switched to AT&T or T-Mobile, the new smartphone I spent so much time setting up was basically only useful as a glorified music player. No text, no voice, no data. I should have double checked this before I got this far in, but I didn't, and I missed it. So at this point my only option is to go back to my iPhone (In my mind using the Pixel with even a de-Googled android would be even worse) and if I'm going back to my iPhone, I might as well go back to my Apple Watch so they will actually sync. And if I'm going back to my iPhone and my apple watch, I might as well go back to Mac OS so my texts, emails and other notifications will still actually sync. Maybe I'm unique and weird, but I think this is what people in the Linux community miss when they say they don't care about Linux smartphones. Smartphones are the cornerstone of modern ecosystems, and they are the bridge between dumb devices like wearables and the internet, and smart devices like desktops and the user. If someone can tell me where to donate money to help get US carrier Support for Ubuntu touch please do, and if they ever figure that out I will be back in a heartbeat, but until then I'm crawling back to apple because it (just…) works.
