Anyone feel like the quality of macOS releases has seriously gone down hill recently? Posted: 11 Aug 2021 08:40 PM PDT I've noticed that on the newer releases (such as Catalina & Big Sur) that system performance has been worse, such as having to wait forever for Spotlight to perform simple addition, macOS system processes using an absurd amount of system resources, to design decisions that do not make sense (like notifications on Big Sur & Monterey) I daily drove a macOS High Sierra & Mojave install for years through multiple hardware changes, whereas I've had to reinstall Catalina & Big Sur 3 times in less than a year. I'd downgrade to Mojave (I mean, "Upgrading to an older, more familiar experience") if I could, but due to newer hardware obviously not supporting OSes (even on hardware which is, lets say, only Apple branded because of a sticker.) Of course, the bad performance could just be a fluke, however I have heard reports of performance being bad on other people's machines too. [link] [comments]

It doesn't happen so very often but when I turn off my camera in the middle of a meeting, the applications mentioned freeze and then quit Im on a 2020 m1 macbook pro with 8 gigs ram. Why Apple isn’t providing a download link for MacOS Mavericks installer app? Posted: 12 Aug 2021 02:36 AM PDT So, this is so weird but I noticed that https://support.apple.com has download links for macOS Lion and Mountain Lion and you can find installer apps for Yosemite and above on https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT211683 . But the problem is why Apple isn't providing a link for MacOS Mavericks installer app? Also, do not post unofficial links for MacOS installer apps here. [link] [comments]
Anyone finding chrome faster (or better in general) than safari? Posted: 12 Aug 2021 01:58 AM PDT Idk when you google safari vs chrome, there are some sites that say safari outperforms chrome, but in the real world usage chrome for me at least is faster or at least more snappier. The animations are more smoother (when scrolling) on certain websites like reddit. I don't know why more people don't talk about this, I'm not even using a high refresh monitor just regular 60Hz At first I thought it was just placebo, but I installed a frame counter (Quartz debug) and on average chrome seems to render more frames than safari so it's no wonder why it seems smoother. Also if you fast forward videos safari sorta compresses the audio and makes it sound muffled (pitch maybe?) whereas chrome no issue at all. The final thing that made me switch back to chrome was audio playback. Not sure if it's a bug or not but every time I want to play audio though the browser there is a solid 1 second delay. If I wake my mac up from sleep and continue playing the same audio source there is no output until I restart the audio or refresh the tab. At first I thought it was just how macOS behaved, until I switched back to chrome and audio play back was instantaneous. I can't say for battery life as I just switched back, but I'm certainly enjoying performance boost so far. I guess I wouldn't be surprised if it drains more, but it seems like safari turns everything down for the sake of power efficiency? [link] [comments]

Tips of configuring the MacOS Big sur terminal for better usability, readability, etc. Posted: 12 Aug 2021 12:06 AM PDT How have you guys configured your Mac terminal? This is my first Mac and the first thing that I noticed is that the terminal is not really readable, for the lack of a better term. I have heard of people configuring the terminal for it to be more useful, but it's all a blur of different recipes by different people. Edit : If not the basic terminal, what about other terminal apps? Is that a good idea or should I stick to the original terminal and configure that? [link] [comments]
Slow internet after updating to Big Sur Posted: 11 Aug 2021 10:27 PM PDT After I upgraded my friend's 2017 MacBook Air's SSD and installed Big Sur on it, she started to notice that her download and upload speeds are awful. For context, internet speeds on her iPhone are around 50 mbps, meanwhile on her Big Sur MacBook Air, internet speeds are only 3-4 mbps. Initially I thought that I had damaged the WiFi card. However, when she tried to use Boot Camp, her internet was quite a bit better, which leads me to conclude that it's an OS issue. Has anyone also experienced this? Any possible solutions to this problem? [link] [comments]
Window manager that stacks windows? Posted: 11 Aug 2021 01:37 PM PDT I've seen a lot of window managers that do an excellent job of tiling, resizing, and moving around. But I'm wondering if there is anything out there that will also let you stack windows. Sometimes, I don't want to have my windows tiled into smaller and smaller views. I just want two columns, side by side, and then cycle through the apps that are stacked in the left column or cycle through the apps stacked in the right column. Amethyst is the closest thing to this, but I don't like how one side of the screen still resorts to tiling. The "Wide" option in Amethyst maximizes all the windows and let's you cycle through those stacked windows though. I've also tried Yabai, but documentation is spotty on this and configuration is very complicated. The syntax feels very esoteric to me, and unless you've considered every edge case to put in your rc file, you're bound to end up with some weird things happening as you're moving quickly through your daily work. Is there anything that can let you do something like what Rectangle does, but also allow for stacked windows you can cycle through? [link] [comments]

For my use case, should I return my 2020 i5 for a M1? Posted: 11 Aug 2021 03:15 AM PDT I recently finally got enough money to buy a laptop, and I decided on the 2020 MacBook Pro i5. This is my first MacBook, first time using MacOS and I do really like it, however the battery isn't very good and sometimes the system feels slow. This is not behaviour I was expecting, and I had heard how good the M1 chips were beforehand, however I didn't think ARM was ready at all. In my use case, I of course heavily rely on a web browser and email, I generally have terminal open all the time and that is for managing my home server or using docker. Occasionally I spin up virtual machines for use. The reason I did not buy a M1 Mac was because when searching, I thought I was going to run into all sorts of incompatibilities with stuff I use, but from what I've read now it really doesn't seem too bad. For my docker solution, I originally started with docker-machine and parallels, but that turned into just connecting through SSH to my server so it really became a non-issue. The other thing I'm noticing as I type this, with Intel Power Gadget in the background, is that every so often the power usage is spiking and I can no longer input text for 10+ seconds. The chassis sometimes gets unbearably hot for seemingly no reason. I have also been using the machine for 1 hour this morning for basic web browsing and I have used 40% battery already. Considering the package power has been anywhere from 0.9w - 5w it's not the behaviour I'd expect from a new machine and all I keep thinking is "Should I have bought the M1?" So I turn to you. I still have a while to return this MacBook for full refund. This would allow me to buy the M1 instead, however I would not be able to get "the same specs". I would lose the 512GB owns to the 256GB, but I'm not sure this would be too much of an issue because I already pay for the 2TB iCloud and have other storage. Should I do it? [link] [comments]
iOS app running on M1 access to camera Posted: 11 Aug 2021 06:24 PM PDT I have installed an iOS app on my M1 based Mac mini. The app launches fine, but the app requires access to the camera. Is there a way to get my iPhone camera to work as the camera? I have Camo Studio which does a fabulous job with zoom, Microsoft Teams, etc. but the iOS app doesn't seem to recognize the camera. Incomplete search results in Mac Outlook Posted: 11 Aug 2021 09:56 PM PDT Hi everyone. I'm getting incomplete search results in Outlook for Mac. Essentially if I'm looking for a specific email or emails from a contact, I enter the search term. E.g. "Dave". As usual, a list of results come up - but it's not complete. It will contain some emails where Dave is mentioned, CC'd or whatever, and from Dave. But the particular email from Dave I'm looking for isnt there. But, low and behold, I can scroll to it very easily. The email is not old - there is no consistency with what it can, or cant, find. It just sometimes won't find particular emails - be they 1 hour old or 1 year old. I am on a work computer with limited admin priveledges. It is not feasible for me to install much sorftware, nor make edits to network properties or internal software on the computer. I've found a few things online, e.g. this https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/msoffice/forum/all/outlook-for-mac-search-results-are-incomplete/0b547a9a-260e-4299-8d8b-f4296b2f5f18 I'm on Mojave, 10.14.6. Outlook is "Outlook for Mac 16.51. Microsoft office 365 subscription". Thanks! [link] [comments]

Is there any way to run a MacOS VM on my M1 Mac? Posted: 11 Aug 2021 11:17 AM PDT I know there's a lot of buzz around running a Windows 10 VM on M1 Macs. However for me I want to run another MacOS instance on my M1 Mac. Is that possible? What software would I use? I'm aware of Parallels but afaik that's Windows 10 only. [link] [comments]
