    FINAL RESULT

    __

You've spoken again, r/Apple. This time around Automod will provide a daily megathread to help make discussion around CSAM developments more centralized.

This doesn't mean that new developments will be sent to the megathread though. Those will be posted as normal. Any existing talking points will go on the megathread.

We do reserve the right approve interesting/high quality posts. We will definitely be strict on this end to make sure we keep a low amount of CSAM-related posts as possible.

On another point, those who voted "yes megathread" had a say on whether the megathead's comments will be sorted by new or not. Surprisingly enough, those voters were split (206 votes for yes, 205 for no). Just to test the waters, we will NOT sort by new in today's thread and tomorrow's. That way we can get a feel on the community and act accordingly.

Unlike last time, I don't have screenshots of the results 'through the hours'. Sorry about that.

    CSAM Daily Megathread

    Posted: 09 Aug 2021 12:04 PM PDT

    Hi r/Apple,

The debate about how to proceed as a community regarding the recent CSAM news has been a difficult and polarizing one. We acknowledge that there is rightful anger, frustration, and disappointment about the issue. However, while the mod team wants to make sure this issue gets the attention it deserves, we also want maintain a balance in the feed so that other interesting news and content is not drowned out.

In the interest of transparency we held a community poll about whether to move to daily megathreads. The results are located here.

So here are the ground rules:

We will be posting daily megathreads for the time being to centralize some of the discussion of this issue.

We will still be allowing news links in the main feed that provide new information or analysis (old news links, or those that re-hash known information, will be directed to the megathread).

The mod team will also, on a case by case basis, approve high-level/high-quality discussion text posts.

Please continue to be respectful to each other in your discussions. Rude/harassing/offensive comments will still be removed per Rule 6.

We will continue to monitor the discussion around this issue. Nothing is set in stone. If this becomes an unacceptable solution to the community, we will re-assess. We just ask that you at least give it a try.

    Thank you everyone for participating!

For more information about this issue, please see Apple's FAQ as well as an analysis by the EFF. A detailed technical analysis can be found here.

Is anybody downgrading their iCloud account in light of the recent news regarding hashing people's photos?

    Posted: 09 Aug 2021 08:30 PM PDT

I was on the 200GB tier and after spending two hours going through my settings, deleting emails and photos to create an offline back up work flow. I realised:

    1) It's tedious and time consuming to go through all the settings even though it's pretty accessible.

    2) There is so much information that's going to iCloud that is actually unnecessary and data just gets sent into the cloud for convenience.

    3) I can get by with the free 5GB tier for sharing files easily.

    4) The cleansing itself is good for the soul. There is a ton of stuff I just simply didn't need.

Is anybody else downgrading their iCloud accounts? And how is it going to change things for you?

Apple employees will not be given legal protection to view illegal content by most/all countries, the initial screeners will end up being the cops themselves.

    Posted: 09 Aug 2021 08:34 AM PDT

One of the core "checks and balances" Apple claims is that an Apple employee will manually review a "visual derivative" (aka: a scaled down/slightly more blurry copy of the flagged image) before reporting the user to the authorities.

Ignoring all of the other problems with this system, under most countries laws possessing and viewing a copy of illegal content is just as illegal as the original content. This places apple employees in legal jeopardy by simply viewing/being in possession of the offending material during the review process. Who on earth would want that job?

Of course, there is one class of person with immunity: Law Enforcement Officers. Of course the agent searching your device can't be charged with possession, all the laws have that provision baked in.

This means that in most countries the initial review team will have to be the cops themselves, which bypasses the entire checks and balances system Apple claims to have constructed.

    Posted: 09 Aug 2021 12:27 AM PDT

You don't own your apple devices. Whoever controls the software owns the device and if that software is proprietary it's the proprietor who owns and controls it fully.

This is what the free and open source movement is about. (FOSS wiki) To give users freedom and control of their own programs and devices.

Until you take back your freedom you're at the mercy of these tyrants.

Apple has been quietly scanning iCloud photos since May 2019

    Posted: 09 Aug 2021 06:44 AM PDT

There's still a lot of misinformation about this topic, which is problematic because the REAL problem is being conveniently ignored.

The new CSAM system only scans photos you upload to iCloud photos, not local photos. However, Apple has been doing this server-side since at least the past two years. The difference right now is different in THEORY but not PRACTICE, and was recently revealed when someone found a previous update to their privacy disclosure:

May 9, 2019. "How we use your personal information"

We may also use your personal information for account and network security purposes, including in order to protect our services for the benefit of all our users, and pre-screening or scanning uploaded content for potentially illegal content, including child sexual exploitation material.

    link

At the time, they were most likely using Microsoft's PhotoDNA, which is the industry standard using image hash matching for child pornography.

Since the new system still only scans iCloud photos, but now it only does so with your device rather than their servers (note: this does NOT mean they're scanning local photos if you don't use iCloud), they've been effectively doing the EXACT same thing since 2019.

It also means that even before this update, they have always been scanning your uploaded photos.

Furthermore and much more importantly-- This means that if we were to demand them make the change, it can't just be to stop this update, because even if they stopped this update the end result is identical.

If apple comes out and issues a statement that they have changed their mind and not implemented this system, nothing will have changed.

We need to demand proper e2e encryption for iCloud photos.

Could governments force Apple to add non-CSAM images to the hash list? -> Apple will refuse any such demands.

    Posted: 09 Aug 2021 04:27 AM PDT

I mean english is not my primary language but isn't the thing about being forced that you can't refuse doing it? Nice little trick you used there Apple.

P.S. To force - make (someone) do something against their will.

    Source: Apple's FAQ

Edit: Apple' s whole answer :

Apple will refuse any such demands. Apple's CSAM detection capability is built solely to detect known CSAM images stored in iCloud Photos that have been identified by experts at NCMEC and other child safety groups. We have faced demands to build and deploy government-man- dated changes that degrade the privacy of users before, and have steadfastly refused those demands. We will continue to refuse them in the future. Let us be clear, this technology is limit- ed to detecting CSAM stored in iCloud and we will not accede to any government's request to expand it. Furthermore, Apple conducts human review before making a report to NCMEC. In a case where the system flags photos that do not match known CSAM images, the account would not be disabled and no report would be filed to NCMEC.
