I shot an animated series teaser on an iPhone

I shot an animated series teaser entirely using an iPhone (photography for background images, video footage, memojis, mocap data) and I'm really pleased with the results.

    Animation:

The requirement that I had for this project was that the animation must be created using a cell phone so that it demonstrates the importance of creative skill over equipment. It was down to the iPhone 12PM and a Samsung Galaxy S21....the Galaxy (surprisingly) in no way compares to the capabilities of the iPhone. I found both the full body emojis and motion capture taken from the Galaxy S21 to be gimmicky at best (inconsistent motion capture, and low detail when facial mapping). On the other hand, the Truedepth camera on the iPhone captured excellent face tracking data and I found that Apple's ARKit is extremely capable in terms of motion capture for full body animation. I'm honestly taken aback at how capable the iPhone is as a legitimate content creation tool for animators, not just for filmmakers and photographers (I would post a YT link to a video sample, but I don't believe this sub allows sharing our own videos). iPhones will also interface with professional motion capture software for recording custom face animation (for in-game movies on console games, etc.) but that was beyond the scope of this project due to the time needed to model and rig complicated face models in 3D software. This project mainly used out-of-the-box iPhone features.

    Regular video and photography:

The 12 Pro Max takes incredible pictures and video. The good news is that high fidelity photos aren't terribly important if you are coloring/drawing over the photo anyway. Just going for basic quality on this project.

    Sound:

I also used the iPhone to record many of the background noises for sound design. I was able to record decent bitrate .wav files just like a Zoom h1n and the files sound just fine (not amazing, but just fine) on the 1080p web video. I'm guessing that the amount of AI/post processing that the iPhone uses on audio internally is pretty high since there is no way such small internal mics would pickup half decent sound without the help of some Apple AI magic. Nothing compares to pro-level mics, of course, but the phone certainly did the job for budget animation filming. Low grade microphone (and cellphone cameras for that matter) + High Quality AI enhancement from Apple = incredible recording device that you can carry around in your pocket.

Considering that filming was done indoors (less background noise) and the camera was usually within 6 feet of my body, the microphones worked great as well so there was no need to use higher end shotgun or lavaliere microphones. If there were any noise or volume issues, they were easily corrected in the video editing software using basic adjustments.

    Conclusion:

The iPhones are really in a league of their own right now. I say this as a longtime Pixel and Galaxy owner that switched over to the iPhone for this project. Here is a screenshot from the project (pretty obvious where the 'character drawings' come from if you are an iPhone user :-). Great fun with an impressive device:
