    3 Quick tl;dr iOS Game Reviews / Recommendations (Episode 92 + Patreon)

    Posted: 25 Jun 2021 04:12 AM PDT

Happy last Friday of June! :) And welcome to my weekly game recommendations based on the most interesting mobile games I played last week. Hope you'll enjoy it.

Also, I launched a Patreon this week to support my mobile gaming content creation. Check it out if you're interested: https://www.patreon.com/NimbleThor <3

This episode includes an amazing story-driven RPG deckbuilder, a casual atmospheric drifting game, and a huge sci-fi simulation strategy game about building spaceships and exploring the universe.

Disagree with my opinion? Let's have a friendly discussion below.

New to these posts? Check out the first one from 92 weeks ago here.

The games are "ranked" somewhat subjectively from best to worst, so take the ranking for what it is.

    Let's get to the games:

The Witcher Tales: Thronebreak [Game Size: 2.7 GB] (free trial)

Genre: RPG / Deckbuilder / Card / Fantasy - Requires Online Access

    Orientation: Landscape

    Required Attention: Some

    tl;dr review:

Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales is a singleplayer story-driven deckbuilding RPG with card-based combat and a huge open world full of interesting stories, NPCs, and monsters to explore.

The game has us walk around an open 2D world to find hidden treasures, talk with NPCs, recruit new companions, and fight monsters. Combat is similar to GWENT, which means it's a card-based system where we have to win two out of three rounds to win the fight. The combat system is incredibly well made and forces us to constantly adapt our strategy to how the opponent is playing and find synergies to utilize.

Cards used during combat are called companions, and we unlock and buy these as we progress in the game. Buying new companions costs gold and wood, which we can find scattered throughout the world. These same resources are also used to upgrade our camp tents, which gradually unlocks new features, such as the ability to talk to our recruits to learn about their story and the mysteries of the game's universe.

The game has an awesome story that really makes it feel as if we're living in the Witcher universe. We're even asked to make various tough decisions throughout, which leads to a total of 20 different endings.

The art-style, music, and fantastic voice-overs all add to the gameplay experience and are perfectly ported from pc. The only slight downside is that the UI shown when picking up resources is rather small.

Thronebreaker is a free to try for about an hour, after which the full game can be unlocked through a single $9.99 iAP. The full game offers about 30 hours of gameplay, and it's absolutely one of the best deckbuilder narrative-driven RPGs on mobile, so it's an easy recommendation.

Tofu Drifter [Total Game Size: 165 MB] (free)

Genre: Drifting / Racing / Casual - Offline

    Orientation: Portrait

    Required Attention: Full

    tl;dr review:

Tofu Drifter is a beautiful and fun racing game about producing and delivering tofu orders while drifting as much as possible to earn xp and gold used to upgrade our business.

If we hit any objects as we drift down the randomly generated tracks, the tofu gets damaged and we earn less XP and gold as a result. Between deliveries, we can buy new vehicles and upgrade our tofu production speed, our storage capacity, and our office, which unlocks new tracks and increases the max order count.

It takes a while to reach the higher levels since the game is rather grindy, but it also features many different track types and difficulties that prevent it from growing repetitive. The main downside is that when all orders have been delivered, we have to wait for new ones to arrive, which takes five minutes and can be sped up by watching an advertisement.

Most importantly, the dreamy low-poly art-style makes drifting feel fantastic in Tofu Drifter, and the music that becomes quieter when we slow down and louder when we speed up helps create a very immersive experience. The controls also work well.

Tofu Drifter monetizes through incentivized ads to gain extra orders and acquire bonus XP and gold when finishing a level. There are no forced ads or iAPs. The gameplay is great, but waiting for orders limits the maximum play-session length, which may frustrate some players.

Infinite Lagrange [Game Size: 1.9 GB] (free)

Genre: Sci-Fi / Strategy / Simulation - Requires Online Access

    Orientation: Landscape

    Required Attention: Little

    tl;dr review:

Infinite Lagrange is a PC and mobile cross-platform sci-fi simulation game about building a fleet of spaceships to explore and exploit a real-time open-world space for resources and rage war against NPCs and other players.

The game focuses primarily on grand-scale simulation, which means we expand our space station and direct our fleets where to move or attack, but the combat itself happens automatically once we've engaged an enemy. There are lots of different types of spaceships to build that all serve different strategic purposes during combat or exploration, and they can each even be expanded in various ways and customized with different weapons, which adds a bit of optional min-maxing.

The art-style is nice, and the UI is relatively intuitive and easy to understand, which makes it fast to move between menus, bases, fleets etc.

Infinite Lagrange monetizes through iAPs to instantly acquire spaceship blueprints and to speed up the time it takes to build spaceships and expand our station. Fortunately, the action points required to attack, mine, etc. cannot be acquired through iAPs, which limits the pay-to-win advantages paying players have over free players.

Ultimately, while paying players have an easier time dominating the end-game, Infinite Lagrange offers an interesting space simulation experience that can easily be enjoyed by free players who enjoy the resource-management and space expansion gameplay.

Top 10 Survival Games for iOS in 2021 (my opinion and research)

    Posted: 25 Jun 2021 06:05 AM PDT

tl; dr 1 - When creating this list, I factored in gameplay, crafting trees, diversity of things to do, reviews and graphics. I have bolded the title of each game in the post. I also added 5 extra games at the end that are worth mentioning.

tl; dr 2 - Some of you know by now that I create all my posts into concise 200+ word per minute videos so you can watch everything here instead of reading https://youtu.be/5RP5QCbSKxA

But for those of you who rather read, here is the video script:

Mobile Survival games are taking over the market with big and small game companies on equal ground so in this video I am going to list the top 10 survival games for android and iOS. Some of these top games will not be a surprise to you, but then there are a few that so far have stayed a secret.

The first game on the list is Ark: Survival Evolved. This will probably not be a surprise to many of you because this game is absolutely amazing. It does a great job of capturing the feel of being alone on an island full of dinosaurs, has a great crafting tree and base building mechanics, allows you to tame and ride those dinosaurs and even has amazing clan mechanics with epic pvp. The only downside of this game is their monetization strategy which would normally disqualify a game from being first on this list, but mobile survival games have worse monetization systems than most genres which has forced me to lower my standards on this video.

The second game on the list is Frostborn. This will probably be a surprise to many of you because most people have not heard about Frostborn outside of this channel. It is made by the creators of Last Day on Earth and they kept the addictive crafting progression using workbenches, but it has actual multiplayer integrated throughout the game. Furthermore, many of the weapons in the game have unique and dynamic abilities making each fight a little different. Leveling up your character and classes allow you to specialize which often results in a really dynamic and strategic team PVP as you defend your base, or fight with people in PvP zones. And it seems like the Dev's are listening to their players which is always a huge bonus to any game. That being said, for those of you who do not like multiplayer in your survival games, then I recommend playing Dawn of Zombies if you like a good storyline, Last Day on Earth if you want to try a classic or Cyberika which is Kefir's newest game. All of these games use the same addictive crafting progression and top down view that we love so much.

The third game is LifeAfter. This game is made by Netease and it is fantastically done. I got really into this game long enough to get a top video for the game and the entire time I played it, I was in amazement at how well they balanced team and solo play. If you join an active Camp, there will always be tons of fun things to do and the camaraderie you build with your teammates is unprecedented. I still have people messaging me almost two years later saying how much fun they had when we used to play lifeAfter together. And I couldn't agree more. I loved defending our base each week, fighting the camp boss each week, and competing for the championship at Charlestown each month. Honestly, it is one of the best games I've ever played, but the grind was so overwhelming. Even with amazing friends that would try to help me do my daily Quests, the game just simply took too much of my time. So if you have not played LifeAfter or if you don't care about being a top player, this should be one of the games you play next.

The fourth game is Day R Survival. I was originally turned off by this game because of the graphics and gameplay. It is a slow game where both fighting and survival includes mostly managing numbers, but as I have learned more about this game, those numbers are what makes this game great. The stats on this game are complex making the strategies on manipulating those stats innumerous. Furthermore the game has a huge world with a vast amount of options for equipment. So if you'll of strategy and have a strong imagination to make up for the lack of visual feedback, this is the perfect game for you.
The next game on the list is Out There: Ω Edition which is another game with a lot of text and not a lot of visual feedback. But similar to Day R Survival, this game is fun because the strategies behind manipulating stats is immensely satisfying. At least it is for me. I'm a big nerd and I love this kind of stuff so if you also like that, and you like space-themed games, this is a game you should try.
The sixth game is Crashlands. This game made it on the list because the creators are hilarious. To give you a glimpse of this, here is a section of one of their trailers… ... and that is just a glimpse, if you want to watch the whole trailer, here is a link.
The seventh game is Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead. This game is kind of a halfway point between something like LDOE and Day R Survival. It has a lot more visual feedback than Day R Survival, but obviously a lot less than one of Kefir's games. It is a lot more numbers and strategy-based than Kefir's games, but not to the level of Day R Survival.
After that, we have Last Island Survival. This game is essentially RUST on the mobile phone. And it is amazing. I played a lot of this game when it first came out and had an absolute blast getting together with my friends and building giant bases, fighting over air drops, and killing the bosses in the maps. Since quitting, I have heard from the community that the game has gone downhill a little bit, in the opinion of top players. But if you were up for a challenge and you don't mind not being the best player in the game, or if you're just looking for RUST on a mobile phone, then this is the game for you.

The ninth game is Radiation City. This game is a great survival game with an amazing story. The story starts out with a journalist team tasked with studying the trinoble power plant accident going missing. The leader of that team was your significant other so you set out to save her but a plane crash leaves you just trying to survive. The game has easily over 25 hours of gameplay and it is extremely well done for the mobile phone.

And the last game on this list is The Escapists 2: Pocket Breakout. This game is a little more of a casual game that I normally choose for my list, but it is cleverly built and offers a few things that the other survival games on this list do not. The main one is that survival in this game is not imminent but rather self-inflicted. You can of course stay in prison for as long as you want and eat the meals given to you, but if you want to get out of prison and get to the beach, then you will need to devise an escape plan and once you start that plan, do everything you need to do to survive.

So those are the top 10 survival games of 2021. In addition to these 10, I have 5 more that I need to mention, but first 3 weeks ago I interviewed the former international president of Activision and everyone that is watching that video is amazed because it was an amazing interview, but very few people are clicking on it to watch it and I am not sure why. I don't know if you guys think it is clickbait or something, but it is not clickbait so here is the link and I could not recommend it more. Ok so back to the 5 extra games I need to mention.

You will be hard pressed to find a top 10 survival game list that does not include This War of Mine. The game is about a civilian father trying to protect his daughter in the middle of a war. It is critically acclaimed for its music, creativity and it's heart wrenching story which is why it did not make it to my top 10 list. I play games to have fun. I have a serious job where I get to help a lot of people that are hurting and my heart breaks for them as I help them in real life so I am not interested in also doing that in a game, but if you are, this is the game for you.

Another game that its players love, but I just can't get behind it is Don't Starve. I do not like the style of art and I simply can't get myself to play this game, but the players of this game love it. It is one of if not the highest rated survival game on Android and iOS.

Then there is Minecraft which is of course a great game, but also everyone already knows about it so I didn't want to put it on the list. That being said, if you didn't know Minecraft was available on the phone, well now you know.

Another game I had to mention is Alien: Blackout. This game is made by the creators of the movies and it almost made it to the top 10 list because it is so different and unique compared to other survival games, but ultimately it got eeked out because there were so many great games.
Another game that got eeked out was Fallout Shelter. This is also a great game that my wife and I enjoyed playing for a while, but there was just too much great competition that it got pushed out of the top 10.

Well, that's it guys. Hope that helps. If you liked this video or how I think about video games, make sure to check out my playlist with the top 10 mobile games. I cover a lot of other genres you might be interested in.

Alright guys, I will see you next time.

Any decent games similar in style to Euro Truck Simulator 2?

    Posted: 25 Jun 2021 09:17 AM PDT

Obviously not of the same scope, but of similar concept. A mainly relaxing experience, travelling around a map, seeing new areas. Earning money for jobs to upgrade current equipment (does not have to be trucks). Ideally, something without ads and/or paywalls. If you've played ETS2 or American Truck Simulator you'll know what I mean.

I know there are a bunch of rip-offs out there on the app store but none of them appear to be that good. Farming Simulator came up as a recommendation but couldn't really get into it.

    Thanks!

    Old school dungeon crawler?

    Posted: 24 Jun 2021 06:28 PM PDT

Looking for something like the old Eye of the Beholder, or King's Field, anything to scratch that sort of itch on the go. Any recommendations? I prefer a more serious atmosphere to get lost in; a lot of the stuff I saw on the App Store was super cartoony or comical.

looking for a game like rathnir

    Posted: 24 Jun 2021 02:29 PM PDT

for those of you who don't know there is a minecraft server called rathnir where players basically form their own nations, go to war, etc., there's even a map system where you can see who owns what territory. what makes this server most appealing to me is how you can actually be someone and make history within the server, the problem is it's only on java so i can't play it on my phone. keep in mind i don't want some basic rts game like clash of clans or rise of kingdoms, i'm looking for an immersive mmo where players can actually have influence over the server. this might be a bit too specific but if anything comes close please let me know in the comments cause i've been searching for a game like this forever.
