IDE with terminal on iPad Pro m1?

    Posted: 25 Jun 2021 12:18 PM PDT

I'm looking for a way to use iPad as a secondary laptop where I could run an IDE with a terminal to develop websites.

On my mac I use VSCode with a terminal, I would like to have a similar platform so I can easily switch between mac and iPad for development work.

So far I've been able to find https://gitpod.io, but it's very limited to the amount of things I can do on the terminal.

Magic “Keyboard” for redesigned iPad mini

    Posted: 25 Jun 2021 01:20 PM PDT

Well it's not really a magic keyboard, but how about a big ass trackpad that makes the iPad mini float when used on a flat surface?

Think it would be awesome as it would be extremely portable, easy to detach, and you won't have to hunch over a desk to just navigate your iPad. Great stand for watching movies on the go to. Or reading a book.

I was a mini-led skeptic (still kind of am) but the 2021 iPad Pro 12.9" is the best display I've ever used, ever, on any device, period. But it lacks one thing over OLED displays that irks me: off-axis viewing angles.

    Posted: 25 Jun 2021 03:05 AM PDT

Example. RAW photo taken in manual mode with fixed exposure and color, at max brightness on iPad. Note the head-on image is intentionally overexposed to show this effect, whereas the photo off axis is dimmer and over-exposed areas are clearly visible. There's also a notable magenta shift.

I was able to upgrade from the 2020 to the 2021 iPad pro this year. I got to compare the devices side by side. I was skeptical of mini-LED because unlike the upcoming micro-LED, it's basically just a fancy kind of IPS display (still a backlit screen rather than self-powered pixels). I was grumpy when I learned the iPad Pro 2021 wouldn't have an OLED option because it's the main thing I wanted changed (we'll get to that later).

I was blown away, absolutely blown away, by the difference. I didn't think it would be that noticeable over the already great screen on the 2020 model. I honestly don't think I understood HDR before the moment I saw them side by side. I mean, I knew what it was, I just wasn't prepared for how incredible the image looked. It's better than my OLED iPhone 12 Pro Max, mostly in being brighter. I was on the fence about upgrading (there wasn't a NEED really) but I'm glad I took the time.

That said, the screen hasn't fully solved the reason I wanted an OLED on the iPad: viewing angles. I'm a photographer, so I'm perhaps overly-sensitive to color/contrast shift, so I doubt most people notice. But when using an apple pencil when the iPad is flat on a table, you necessarily view the screen from off axis. There is, if you look, a very noticeable color and brightness shift to the screen. It's not bad, especially compared to most non-OLED displays, and is way more than usable. But nonetheless it exists, and as a photographer, my editing process is potentially affected. OLED screens have some off-axis viewing angle issues too, but generally fewer because of the technology used. Compared side-by side, the 2021 iPad Pro 12.9" is, however, superior to the 2020 model in off-axis viewing angles.

So this all is to say that there is still progress to be made, and I hope apple takes notes, given that these tablets are used professionally mainly by professions doing color and contrast sensitive work.

Finally… Third Party apps can keep using the camera while multitasking in iPadOS 15 Beta 2.

New iPad user. Need help with screen protector.

    Posted: 25 Jun 2021 08:02 AM PDT

Hello, I'm a Humanities student. Recently bought the iPad Air 4. I primarily used it for notes, sketched just once or twice but classes are getting over and now I use it for media consumption and gaming (CODM and PES). I was using the ESR tempered glass but the fingerprints and glare are just too much for me. I'm using it bare for a few days but micro scratches are inevitable someday.

Should I order a matte protector (ESR or Paperlike), a PET protector (Supershieldz) or stick with the 2nd ESR glass I still have? The boxes it should tick are - 1. Minimal smudges 2. Shouldn't alter display far too much. Use true tone anyways. 3. Shouldn't affect gameplay sensitivity too much. 4. Drop protection doesn't matter much.

I'm pretty well adapted to writing on the glass plus I have a grip on my pencil. Don't do any photo editing for now. Classes will resume after a month atleast. Thank you. Stay safe.

Anyone use an app that screen records w option to pause??

    Posted: 25 Jun 2021 09:12 AM PDT

I've used the built in screen capture extensively but there's no option to pause. Drives me nuts. I'm making 10+ min videos using my apple pencil, which I love, but it's a pain to have to stop the video when I have to break up a cat fight!

I know I edit post-filming but it's much more efficient to just be able to pause

    Relating to signing documents

    Posted: 25 Jun 2021 12:34 PM PDT

Is it true that you have to pay for an app just to sign documents on an iPad? I've heard people talk about it, but just want to ask iPad users here. I don't personally have one, but I'm just interested into why Apple would do such a thing if it's true.

Best thing about the iPadOS 15 for me is the persistent 3 dot multitasking switch

    Posted: 24 Jun 2021 07:19 PM PDT

Just updated to 15 beta and a great thing I realised that since the 3 dot option to change multitasking mode is shown at the top, you can now just use apple pencil to switch apps to split screen, slideover or fullscreen mode. No need to use finger gestures anymore for these actions. I like to use the pencil as much as possible so this is fantastic for me. I should have anticipated this after seeing the announcement event but I guess I was thinking apple would still restrict the pencil somehow lol.

Home screen icon density sucks though.

12.9 2021 iPad with 4th gen magic keyboard and tempered galss?

    Posted: 25 Jun 2021 10:35 AM PDT

I recently bought an ipad 12.9 2021. Im looking for a keyboard right now and it seems like the 4th gen's magic keyboard is cheaper. I found that the fourth gen's MK works perfectly fine with the 5th gen ipad. I wonder if that's still the case with the tempered glass installed?

Google Photos not properly syncing DNG photos on my new iPad. Only embedded JPG is synced.

    Posted: 25 Jun 2021 08:18 AM PDT

Google Photos not syncing DNGs from my camera properly on my new iPad. This is really just a heads up for anyone who might be affected. I suspect it's syncing the embedded JPG file only.

I've got it all setup for Original Quality the photo will sync with the DNG extension but the size goes from 40 MB -> 13 MB or so and some exif information is missing as well. Tested the same photo on my android phone and it synced correctly. When I download on desktop all I get is a JPG file.

Vertical Screen Split... it just makes sense... to windows..

    Posted: 25 Jun 2021 07:38 AM PDT

I saw a direct attack to the split screen on the ipad during the windows 11 presentation. (I know, one is a desktop OS, the other is iPadOS), but damn it's true that it makes sense.... I hope Apple consider it at some near future. (just ranting a little bit)

"...And when you rotate, not only it is smooth, but we've stack them (the apps in split view) on top of each other because IT JUST MAKE SENSE..."

Is it possible to change input language when using an external wireless keyboard?

Does the iPad support multiple input languages while using an external keyboard that only has an English layout? If yes how is the layout of the additional language determined?

iPad Pro 5th Gen / Apogee Jam+ compatability

    Posted: 25 Jun 2021 02:52 AM PDT

Hi mates. I usually do my guitar recording on the laptop, but since I have treated myself to an iPad upgrade recently, I would like to use it too. Some of the hard and soft new formats have let me down in the past few years, so I would like to kindly ask if anyone has used the Jam+ on the latest iPad Pro successfully.
