Switching from a Fitbit? Things to know + app suggestions

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 06:03 AM PDT

Hope this post helps give any people switching over to an AW from Fitbit, or thinking about it, the information they need to set their expectations and make the transition easier! (It's totally worth it.)

    --

    Things you should probably know:

    • HR sampling is usually every few minutes on the AW, not every few seconds like on the Fitbit, so don't expect the same granularity 24/7. This is true unless you've got it in workout mode (during which it samples about every 5 seconds); by the way...
    • Although AW has auto-detect, it's not that great imho and may miss some minutes in the start of your workout. It would be better to start the workout mode (including by just using Siri) to make sure you capture your whole session. It does start automatically with some workout apps/services (Nike Training Club, Alo Moves, etc.).
    • The Apple Health app collects your data but it won't be presented to you in the format/with the analysis you're used to in the snazzy Fitbit app, like with heart rate zones. Some of the information you may want on your watch face will need a third-party app to provide the complication. It is a little annoying to have to collect apps to get functions which come stock on a Fitbit, but maybe the list of apps (below) will help!
    • Sleep tracking is not really automatic, you set a sleep schedule or something... too much of a pain for me, I just use an app (see below) to automatically capture it.
    • Just because you can, doesn't mean you should; note that some watch complications which pull data/refresh often will impact your battery life, e.g. the noise meter.
    • Getting the battery life advertised at minimum for the AW (e.g. 18h for 6/SE) shouldn't be a problem. But you can definitely make some simple changes to help it last beyond that, and make the blow from losing Fitbit-level battery life and charging habits a little softer. I put my settings at the bottom of this post in case it helps anyone. My impression is also bigger sizes get a bit more battery life than smaller ones.

That all said, there's obviously loads an Apple Watch can do that a Fitbit (or Garmin) can't do... but you already knew that or you probably wouldn't be considering it to begin with. :)

    Apps I use and suggest

The paid apps on this list are all a one-time payment instead of a subscription model, because that's what I prefer. I focused on fitness/health apps which are similar to the Fitbit features I missed.

For getting used to that damn battery life: Battery Grapher - $1.99

    • This watch app itself is designed for low battery consumption (unlike some other battery monitoring apps out there which end up contributing to drain...)
    • Once it learns your habits it can give you your estimated capacity remaining in hours/minutes which is more actionable for me than a percentage
    • It also tells you about how much battery was consumed in the past hour, helpful for pinpointing if a new app or change has your watch using up battery at a higher rate than usual

For seeing your weekly health targets on your watch face: Streaks - $4.99

    • The rings are cool but they're only daily; I wanted to see my stats for the week on my watch face (e.g. how many total exercise minutes logged this week vs. my weekly goal) similar to Fitbit goals
    • Tasks can automatically update based on your Health data

For seeing your heart rate on your watch face: Heart Rate - stock Watch OS app

For seeing your workout heart rate divided into zones: Heart Analyzer - Free, with Premium unlock at $4.99 also Healthfit - $3.99

    • You can click through the history of your workouts and see the division/proportion into different heart rate zones
    • Both also have a bunch of other metrics and graphs, like daytime vs. night time RHR
    • Cardiogram is also good (even the free features only) but I preferred the presentation on these apps

    For sleep tracking/analysis: Autosleep - $3.99

    • Captures sleep sessions automatically in my experience, even random naps
    • Does not need to be installed on the watch, I have it on just my iPhone and it just pulls data from the Health app
    • You can optionally indicate your "going to bed" time, to get data on how long it takes you to fall asleep
    • Does need to be calibrated, at minimum, for sensitivity; I used the Sleep Cycle app (free) on my iPhone using the mic for a few nights alongside it and adjusted the sensitivity to have a more similar "Time sleeping" and I feel like that improved the data

For circuit/workout timers: Seconds - Free, with Pro version at $4.99

    • This was already my favorite circuit training timer for my phone, and the watch app syncs the timers on your phone to the watch
    • My favorite feature of this app is you can enable text to speech (yes, even for the watch app), so you don't need to look at your watch or phone to know the next exercise/block
    • If you give it permissions it can log your workouts in the Fitness app automatically without needing to start a workout

For if you're jealous of your Garmin-owning friend's Body Battery stat: Training Today - Free, with unlock of all features at $2.99

    • Ymmv, but I found my morning reading very in line with my Autosleep "Readiness" reading (both are based on your HRV) and how I felt
    • Only updates when your watch takes an HRV reading (when your watch detects you're at rest, or when using the Breathe app). I recommend using the Breathe app before you get out of bed to help make this more accurate
    • You will need to mess around with the smoothing and intensity settings a bit, check the app website, I used my Readiness score to help guide me as well
    • I also find this more in line with my general feeling than the Athlytic Ready To Train score (which told me I was good to go when I was somewhat sleep deprived ?)--although I didn't bother with the Athlytic premium subscription if that fixes things

For... well, it's just super useful: Shortcuts - stock iOS/Watch OS app

    • From your phone, you can set automations to change your watch face based on time of day/day of week/etc. (for example, a watch face with your tasks on it during work hours and a health-focused one after work hours) or other conditions (your location, start/end of a workout, etc.)
    • If nothing else, you can set an automation to turn on Cinema Mode at a specific time; no more being blinded by your wrist if you move around at night!
    • You can put complications for specific shortcuts on the watch face (I have a Bedtime shortcut on my "night time" watch face, to trigger the "going to bed" status for Autosleep + ask me to set my alarm for the next day; I have a tea timer shortcut on my "work day" watch face which prompts me to select what I'm making and sets a timer accordingly)

Other nice to have fitness apps: Nike Training Club is totally free and shows your heart rate on screen during video workouts; FitOn shows heart rate and calorie burn but I'm not sure if it's on the free version. Zombies, Run! is a great app I've been supporting for years and one I think makes running/walking way more interesting.

Misc. settings for better battery life

For reference, I'm using a 40mm SE GPS. It's been ~21 hours since my last full charge, and its at 55% (with 1 night of sleep tracked and 30+ minutes of workout time). I never put my watch on airplane mode, but my phone is always nearby so it's in Bluetooth range.

I realize I could probably eke out more hours by turning off stuff like Raise to wake and Stand reminders and more of my notifs, not using the watch for workout HR/sleep tracking, simpler watch faces etc. but those would defeat the purpose of this watch for my needs so I don't want to do all that. 🤷🏻‍♀️

My advice is to only change whatever is "painless" and not let your device's battery boss you around!

    • lowest brightness setting
    • Siri only on crown press
    • mostly just notifications I care about on (e.g. not all chats, just VIPs; not all apps either)
    • location services off for apps I don't think need it or don't use (basically all of them save Watch faces and Siri)
    • noise monitoring off
    • watch faces are mostly dark (Infograph, Infograph Modular for example)--which I do because I like those faces but this maybe makes a difference?
    • only the apps I actually need/use are installed on the watch
    • DND and Cinema Mode (via automation) set to go on automatically in the evenings, so screen doesn't wake while in bed or sleeping
    • handwashing detection off
    • no complications that need to be updated super often
    • my phone is always around so I play media from that, and just control via the watch

Hey guys! I have an Apple Watch series 6 40mm and I am at the beach, it is ok to war an Apple Watch while swimming on the sea water? Like I’m worrying for the salt level and the Apple Watch speakers.

    Media Storage Limitation

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 11:15 AM PDT

I never really paid much attention to storage space on my Apple Watches over the years, but I recently started jogging, and figured it would be nice to leave my phone at home, so I started picking some music and podcasts to load directly onto my watch. I mean, hey, I've got 32 gb of storage (minus the system and apps). Of course, that's when I discovered Apple's maddeningly arbitrary limitation on how much storage can be used for "media" (I believe it's 25% of the total storage space).

So, despite having over 21gb of free space on my watch, I'm unable to load an additional 6gb playlist onto it because I would be "out of media storage."

I get the idea of not allowing the user to consume every last little smidgen of space, so that the watch has some elbow room to function, and I can even understand reserving some space for the OS update process. But there is absolutely no logic in fencing off such a HUGE amount of space and making it unavailable for the user. I love my watch, and I think Apple generally makes great products, but some decisions are baffling.

Why hasn’t apple added this feature yet????

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 01:11 AM PDT

Why in the world hasnt apple added the feature of mass deleting messages on the apple watch yet? Its titillating that you have to manually delete each thread one by one. It mirrors the iphone seamlessly with settings and other things but cant mirror it with that. Or even give us the option to mass delete. Its so annoying. I feel like its not that hard to add that. Ive been wanting it since my Series 1 days. 🙄🙄🙄

    Okay im done ranting.

What is better, fluoelastomer or sport loops?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 10:05 AM PDT

Hi guys, like title says I would like to know which one of these bands are better in fitness and cleaning domains? I know that nike sport bands right are really easy to clean up and I wanted to know if sport loop bands owners clean up their bands as well as a fluoelastomer one. And if they are comfortable to wear? Thanks

    Extra long braided solo loop?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 12:09 PM PDT

    Hey all,

I have a 40mm SE, and I'd like to get a braided solo loop (third party is fine, I don't care). The problem is, I measure a size 10 with Apple's tool, which only comes in 44mm size - the biggest size I can get for the 40mm is size 9.

Any suggestions for an extra long third-party braided solo loop that will fit a big wrist and the 40mm watch? Thanks!

Red exclamation mark of death on Apple Watch - is this fixable?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 05:58 AM PDT

I have a series 3 that was a gift in March 2018 - definitely some sentimental attachment.

Went to update the software this weekend - screen froze halfway through the update. Googled it and told to restart the watch - however after restarting got a red exclamation mark ❗️ and it no longer works.

Took it to the Apple store - was told essentially this is a software issue and I need to send it to Apple. The employee wasn't sure if it would be free - but told me they've had this issue with the series 3 before and it should be free if I talk to Apple support.

However he couldn't guarantee they could fix it.

    Two questions:

    1) anyone else have this issue and get their watch successfully fixed??

    2) if they can't fix it will they send it back to me? As it was a gift with sentimental value I'd really like to keep it even if it's broken?

Feeling very naked with out my watch!

Can I run a timer during a workout without interrupting the workout?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 11:55 AM PDT

My new watch is on its way and I plan on implementing cardioacceleration into my strength training routines once I have it to time the cardio in between sets. Is this going to be possible? I'm hoping to be able to start a strength training workout and then use the timer app to time the cardio without interrupting the workout.

What is up with the Watch occasionally locking on wrist?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 11:18 AM PDT

As the title says I have occasional issues with it locking even if it is on my wrist.

Now before I came here I of course googled the hell out of this, tried resetting, tried re-pairing, tried tighter wrist band, wrist detection is enabled and so on.

But nothing seems to work and it is still locking once, maybe twice a day or even more, if it is a bad day. Is there anything else out there that is not websearchable and I can try or is it just a faulty unit? Am I missing something here?

Apple Watch SE btw, purchased end of April this year.

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 10:48 AM PDT

Ive had my series 3 for about a year and a half now and would like a newer one. I was wondering if it was worth buying the s6 or if i would be just as well off buying a used s5. I really want the always on display and that's the only reason I'm not considering an s4.

    Apple watch activity competition bug

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 10:39 AM PDT

    Hi,

So i started this activity competition with a friend when I got my first watch back in January this year. We weren't planning to really go for the competition, and decided after a day or so to quit the competition.

But since then I have this bug that the contact is duplicated in my friends list, and that the competition itself never ended. It always says "Starting (null)" and no points are given since we quit in January.

I tried to unshare my activity, delete contact and re-add, but nothing works. After 30 minutes to an hour, the contact is duplicated, and the competition is back on top of my sharing list.

How can I fix this annoying bug? Does anybody have experienced this before?

Apple Watch recording heart rate when not wearing?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 05:22 AM PDT

My Apple Watch has been recording my heart rate at night when I take it off and it is showing my heart rate as being extremely high and throwing off my resting heart rate? I took it off last night and it started recording my heart rate almost 2 hours later and is showing a resting heart rate of 153. Has this happened to anyone else?

Anybody use the Siri face lately? I have not used it in forever and decided to put it on today. Though I'm having issues with 3rd party apps not displaying their data… it seems to only be Apple stock apps that keep appearing. I expected Things 3 and fantastical to come up at least. I do have the third party sources settings turned on. I've also done the unpair/repair routine but still nothing! Any ideas?

Is the series 6 right for a first time buyer?

I replaced my watch and put the old Sports band on my new watch, so now I have an extra unopened Sports band. Would Apple let me swap this for a different band of same value (e.g. nylon sports loop)?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 07:57 AM PDT

The watch was purchased at Best Buy, so that's why I didn't choose my band during the purchase.
