    Waking MacBook Pro from Sleep

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 05:58 AM PST

Over the past 2-3 months I have noticed that if my battery is around 35% or lower, every now and then when I open the lid it works for 2 min and then the screen turns off. After pushing the power button a couple times it shows the low battery indicator. When I plug it in it comes back on and works even if I take off the charger! I have a 2018 MacBook Pro 15 inch running macOS Big Sur 11.2.1!

What are my options for running Snow Leopard?

    Posted: 23 Feb 2021 10:38 PM PST

    Hey all,

So I'd like to run Snow Leopard, preferably not virtualised. I have a 2016 MacBook Pro. Would it be feasible or even possible to install SL on a partition on my 2016 MBP, or would I be better off virtualising it?

Otherwise, what would be the latest hardware from Apple that could run Snow Leopard, like an iMac or Mac Mini?

New file in right click menu Finder

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 04:06 AM PST

Can someone tell me how to add the option 'New text file' to right click menu in Finder?

    1. I googled this extensively and only find instructions that are old and do not work on Big Sur.
    2. My Automator has no 'services'. It has Workflow, Application or Quick Action, but the latter are added to my Touchbar (which should not even exist, let alone that I would consider using it).
    3. Finder has services via Menu bar where a workflow to create a new text file does show up, why not in the context/right click menu?

I don't need anything fancy, I find myself clicking at the bottom to open a Terminal a folder, type 'touch myfile.txt' and exit. This should be easier, shouldn't it?

    Help with updating my Mac

    Upgrading to a certain version

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 03:21 AM PST

To download iMovie I need to upgrade to my system to any version newer than 10.15.6. However when I update from the System Preferences it directly installs the Big Sur which I don't want because of its some bugs and problems. So how can I update to a certain version (10.15.6)?

Upgrading MBP to an SSD ... and (surprise!) having problems. Help.

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 03:19 AM PST

Upgrading MBP to an SSD ... and (surprise!) having problems. Help.

Basically, got to a certain point in the SSD replacement and I'm now getting the flashing question mark symbol on start-up, although the internet recovery was presumably successful (at first). It downloaded Catalina and restarted, and that's when I went to bed expecting a 'Hello' screen the next morning. Instead, pic related. More details below.

    https://preview.redd.it/ew4qpbqotej61.jpg?width=400&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e36a9b2890afcdc621416c2ee3272307d3073d44

    Background:

    • Have a MBP mid-2012 13" (non-retina), bought it new in 2013. It was working generally fine, no big problems, just getting rather laggy in the last year or so with browser (Chrome) demands. Updating Photos would take a while, and working on photos (probably the only other intensive thing I ask of it) was slow. Usable, just many many beachballs. I upgraded to 16gb RAM in early December, that work fine. I was using High Sierra for a long time, but upgraded it to Mojave after the RAM upgrade. No problems. It came with a 500gb drive, of which 260gb or so remained. I have had no issues with the drive cable (as sometimes reported for this MacBook). Really, it's been a sturdy workhorse for the last 7 years, just kind of showing its age.
    • After some research, I bought (from there 'store' on Amazon) an OWC 1 TB SSD (Mercury Extreme Pro 6G). In reading reviews, some say OWC are garbage. I noticed this before buying, but quite honestly it seemed I was seeing as many comments e.g. Samsung and Crucial, too. Hard to know what reviews to trust.
    • When I first tried to re-format the SSD on the MacBook, it couldn't unmount it during the process... so failed. Luckily I have another work-issue MacBook (not super high specs though), and it worked in seconds.
    • I replaced the HDD for the SSD in the MacBook, easy enough. It was recognized, so far so good, no problems... I used internet recovery, and it downloaded Catalina fine. (I would prefer Mojave, as that's what I was using and what my work laptop runs, just to be consistent. I would probably 'downgrade' later anyhow)

This is where the problem starts. Instead of finding a welcome screen the next morning, I found a warm laptop flashing the question mark folder.

    • The Catalina OS is presumably on the SSD, because where it was 'empty' before, it now has ca. 8.3gb.
    • Recovery start-up mode works, everything appears as it should. Using Disk Utility, it found an EFI error but repaired it. Since then, no issues detected.
    • Upon one later start-up, it suddenly looked a bit retro and after a while, I realized when I clicked internet recovery again (did not download, just to see), it wanted to download Snow Leopard (!).
    • Anyway, I am now stuck with a flashing question mark in normal start-up, even though the SSD is there and 'fine' in recovery mode. Clearly the OS download has gone sideways, among other potential issues.
    • I have read other problem reports on reddit and on the web for comparisons, so I have an idea of the issues awaiting me, but none has really helped me out so far. If only because I don't know what is exactly wrong now.

What now?? A bootable USB stick is my next attempt, but otherwise... I feel lost. Any experience to share? Advice to give? Somewhere else to crosspost? A different (ironclad!) SSD to recommend? Just bury it all in the garden?

It's taken me weeks to get to this point because my wife and I work full time from home during lockdown (living in Germany), and we have a toddler with us 100% of the time. It's been tough to get the quiet time (when not exhausted) to fiddle with tiny screws, etc. At some point after buying the SSD, I realized I'd need to buy a new external drive to back up Time Machine (fresh, which took 2.5 days, lol), as I can't spare any of the external drives I already had. Also needed to buy a little connector cable gadget (Inateck). All cost me a few days extra. This is getting pretty annoying. I wanted to salvage a perfectly "still usable" old laptop, but didn't expect it to drag on so long or drain so much money... Half wondering if a new laptop is easier (if pricier)

In what folder is Screen Time history data stored?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 03:13 AM PST

So I understand you can turn Screen Time off and on to clear the history, but the point is that I am not the admin of my computer, and I can't turn it on or off. But then I thought: the data should be stored somewhere... Is it possible to delete it via finder?

Issues with Dell D600 dock and M1 MacBook Pro

    Posted: 23 Feb 2021 07:57 PM PST

I've recently bought an M1 MacBook Pro and I'm trying to use a Dell D6000 dock that I already had for Windows/Linux laptops.

When I connected the dock for the first time through USB-C, the MacBook already started to charge and my LG Ultrawide monitor was being displayed as a second screen, no problems there. Even though the display was already working, I've installed DisplayLink drivers anyway.

I noticed that no sound was coming through HDMI and in Sound settings there was no HDMI output device. I've searched and found this. In short, I had to reboot while Sound settings window was open (makes no sense), but it worked, now I have the LG ULTRAWIDE audio output device and sound is working fine through HDMI.

But now I have two more problems. The first one is that Ethernet does not work. It does show up on Network settings, but it shows as disconnected. Unplugging and plugging the cable again does not fix it. What I found out is that if I disconnect the entire dock from the MacBook and connect it again, it does work, it shows the Ethernet adapter as connected. It just doesn't work when I boot the MacBook with the dock already connected.

The other problem is related to sound. This dock has both a 3.5mm audio out on the back and a 3.5mm headset (in/out) on the front. Both don't work, but, similarly to the Ethernet problem, it does work if I unplug and plug the dock again after macOS has booted. This hack only works if the cable is already connected before I unplug the dock. After this, a new audio device is shown (Dell USB Audio) and I can disconnect the 3.5mm cable and connect again without needing to reconnect the whole dock.

I've searched but found nothing about these specific issues with macOS. Any help would be very appreciated.

Sidecar eats my internet, even on USB.

    Posted: 23 Feb 2021 03:55 PM PST

With sidecar using my iPad as a second screen my internet speeds drop down to around 10 Mbps. With no sidecar my speeds are around 500 Mbps. Easily reproducible every time. I turned off WiFi on my iPad to make sure sidecar is connected over USB and I still get terrible speeds. This also seems to happen with Duet.

Anyone know a fix for this?

    i3 like shortcuts for Mac?

    Posted: 23 Feb 2021 09:48 PM PST

In the window manager i3 you have the option to focus on windows with Mod+direction. This allows you to shift the whole focus to another window or another screen. I was wondering if Mac has anything similar?

I know you can change focus with Ctrl+F4 but that follows a specific sequence and similarly Cmd+~ only allows switching between the same program. Both of these also don't "fully" change focus. For example I have a shortcut that's mapped to change full screen windows left and right and when I change focus with one of the above shortcuts and then try changing windows it doesn't work as expected.
