    Sealing edge of screen from dust ?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 10:39 PM PST

    So i have a Macbook that has a tiny gap (They all have it to some degree) between the rubber gasket and glass screen where lots of dust gets trapped in. This is very annoying because i work in a very dusty workshop. So i'm curious if there could be anything i could rig to seal off this little gap all the way around the screen ? Maybe a special thin tape or glue type solution ? It can be permanent.

    Any help would be appreciated. Thank you !

    $400 Price difference between Air and Pro, worth it?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 01:01 PM PST

    So here in Norway the price difference between the M1 Air and Pro is little over $400. This makes it harder to decide. I currently have the 2017 Pro and use Teams, Outlook, Photoshop and dual monitors. Would you pay $400 extra for the Pro in my case?

    I also do travel a lot due to my job so the Air has the upper hand there.

    Any programmers here that can speak on the current state of M1 MBA for development

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 06:06 PM PST

    Hey /r/macbook I am currently shopping around for a new laptop and keep coming back to the M1 Macbooks as the top choice for my needs and budget.

    I have seen that tools like Homebrew, Docker and some of the other common dev tools were/are still in the process of being ported. I am mainly a Python and C/C++ dev but I also work in Lua, Rust and Swift depending on the project.

    I've been searching the internet and haven't found any reason to believe my main languages will not work on M1, but I wanted to know if there is any less-known issues other devs have encountered whilst working on their M1 machines which I may have missed. Feel free to drop your thoughts/experience even in other languages/dev environments.

    Windows 10 on MacBook Air 2020 (Intel)

    Posted: 01 Feb 2021 12:03 AM PST

    Hello Guys,

    I am ChemE Student and have to use some software like ANSYS for academic. I was thinking to use BootCamp to install Windows on my MacBook Air 2020 i5 8 GB.

    Will it run smoothly?

    Or should I install on external Pen drive?

    Mac can't handle video conferencing any more... do I upgrade??

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 02:36 PM PST

    Hello,

    I have a 2017 MacBook, the specs are:

    1.2 Ghz Dual Core Intel Core m3

    Initially, I had no problems running Zoom and several other programs at the same time, but as 2020 went on, I now can't even be in Zoom at all without it crashing my entire laptop.

    I have the most up-to-date Apple software. I have the most up-to-date Zoom software. All of my apps are up-to-date.

    What is going on??

    My job depends on me being able to use Zoom and a variety of video conferencing platforms. I use Google Meets all day with zero issues.

    I am about 4 seconds away from just buying a new Mac because I have no idea what else to do, my career depends on me being able to do video conferencing and I can't keep dropping off 3 minutes into meetings.

    Is my processing system too weak? Is it possible for my computer to get "tired of" everything I'm asking it to do and now its rejecting? Am I just crazy and giving the Mac too much credit??

    Follow up question:

    If the consensus is yes, buy a new MacBook... which one? I'm having a hard time finding information about if the MacBook Pros with the M1 chip or the intel processors are better for constant video conferencing.

    If anyone has any kind of answer, I would greatly appreciate it.

    Help! MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2013)

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 07:49 PM PST

    So, my old trusty MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2013) finally died on me (doesnt turn on at all). Instead of throwing it away, I want to fix it and give it to my 13 yr old who is going to H/S later this year.
    A - just based on this, any idea what the problem coudl be (battery, port or logci board issues)
    B - anyone recomomed a good off market repair shop in the GTA (Ontario, Canada) area. I went to Apple and because it is old, they cant provide support for it.

    Thank you!

    Potential risks of going with fanless MBA M1?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 07:40 PM PST

    I read and watched a lot of reviews and everyone says that performance wise the MBA easily hold up with the MBP (which is awesome for 300 bucks less) but one thing that worries me a lot are the temps going to (imo unhealthy) 90-100 degrees.

    I am a computer science student so I do less intensive coding with java, C++ and a little web developement for now but I intend to use it for more intense projects down the line which may leave the macbook on high temps for longer periods of time.

    Has anything been said about potential damage that could be caused by stressing the macbook out too much?

    Money is tight but I intend to use the machine for years to come so a little advise would be very appreciated!

    Chrome performance on MBA m1?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 06:57 PM PST

    As of February 2021, is it worth using Chrome on a MacBook Air m1? In the previous years, Chrome killed the battery on MacBook so we had to use Safari.

    My pet peeve with Safari is that I can't separate my personal and work accounts on the browser.

    Where to sell MacBook M1 Air?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 06:02 PM PST

    I am going back to school and I've realized that I have to sell my MacBook Air M1 since my major is going to require some programs that must be ran on windows. I'm wondering where to sell my recently purchased MacBook Air w/ M1? Does anyone have suggestions for websites to sell it on?

    Thanks in advance.

    MacBook Air trackpad

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 05:31 PM PST

    Hello all,

    I wanted to ask a question with the trackpad on the MacBook Air trackpad. Has anyone felt the need to put a protector over the trackpad? Or is it safer to avoid putting one on?? I ordered the M1 MacBook Air as my first MacBook, but I wanted to ask about putting protection over the trackpad. The only reason I ask is because I had heard putting a screen protector on the screen can mess up the screen, so I figured I'd ask if putting a protector on the trackpad would ruin anything in the long run.

    Thank you! :)

    Will dark mode theoretically help or hurt battery life with the LCD screen on the MacBook Air M1?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 09:47 AM PST

    I know that only OLED panels have the benefit of using dark mode to improve battery life but I was wondering if there is a difference using light mode or dark mode on the MacBook Air M1

    I am running the Spotify app via Rosetta 2 (I believe) and when I check Activity Monitor, a process called "Spotify Helper (Renderer)" is almost always using 99% of the CPU. am I the only one?

    I think there is an important discussion to be held about this year’s MacBook M1 Air and MacBook M1 Pro 13. I have tried to briefly it below in the hope of it being helpful to those who are faced with tough purchasing choices.

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 03:26 PM PST

    It is well-known how close M1 powered MacBook Air and MacBook Pro 13 are these year. Many still wonder whether they should buy MacBook Air or MacBook Pro, whether they should get 8Gb RAM or 16Gb RAM and last but not least, whether 7 GPU cores lag noticeably behind 8 GPU cores. (Not me, unfortunately, since I have been too impulsive and bought an Intel powered model which I now badly regret as it is awfully hard to resell my model at an attractive price in the time of pandemics.)

    In my experience, those on a tighter budget are most frequently willing to compromise on storage. But to get to the point, where I am currently at, MacBook Air with 7GPU cores, 8Gb RAM and 256Gb SSD costs 1129€, whereas MacBook Pro with 8GPU cores, 16Gb RAM and 256Gb SSD costs 1679€. There are no less than four M1 powered models in between these two.

    I summarize the prices here for reference and clarity. I believe there is a similar pricing scheme in other countries and many will find this useful:

    i) MB Air, 7 GPU cores, 8Gb RAM, 256Gb = 1129€;
    ii) MB Air, 7 GPU cores, 16Gb RAM, 256Gb = 1359€;
    iii) MB Air, 8 GPU cores, 8Gb RAM, 512Gb = 1399€;
    iv) MB Pro, 8 GPU cores, 8Gb RAM, 256Gb = 1449€;
    v) MB Air, 8 GPU cores, 16Gb RAM, 512Gb = 1629€;
    vi) MB Pro, 8 GPU cores, 16Gb RAM, 256Gb = 1679€

    Now that we have had some time to use M1 powered Macbooks, how consequential is each of the three decisions below as regards to performance and possibly all around user experience:

    —MacBook Air vs MacBook Pro, which would be a major differentiator between iii) and iv);
    —8Gb RAM vs 16Gb RAM, which is to say: is the 230€ difference justified, is it better to buy ii) or iv);
    —7 GPU cores vs 8 GPU cores; implicit to Air vs Pro in a way, but also important for differentiating, say, between ii) and iii) —extra RAM or extra storage and a single extra core for extra 40€?

    Finally, while we're at it, is there a single winner overall among the six, generally recommended to most, or is it indeed very convoluted?

    I hope many will find this useful.

    Could I get some help with formatting my MacBook Air please?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 02:05 PM PST

    So, I have an older macbook that I'm trying to do a clean sweep on. I normally use Windows so I'm not super familiar with macbooks as much. I'm trying to make sure any old files that I had on this macbook are safe. When I click on Finder, I don't see any local hard drives as you would with Explorer on PC. I see iCloud and it has my files and Desktop and all of that. Should I assume that that means ALL of my files are already stored on my iCloud? When I go to Disk Utility, I'm seeing Macintosh HD which has 11.27 GB under Used and 79.12GB under Other Volumes. I'm assuming Other is system files/OS shit/App Prefs/etc. Is the other 11 gigs of Used, personal documents? It's just weird that I don't see the local SSD anywhere in Finder at all. Is that something that Apple hides from users?

    Thank you so much for the help!

    Thunderbolt 2 problem

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 01:34 PM PST

    So I got my macbook air 2015 and I use the thunderbolt 2 to use it with an external monitor via thunderbolt to hdmi adapter. so for some time i plugged the hdmi from the macbook to my ps4, to play some games on the same monitor, and after this when i plugged the cable back from the ps4 to the thundrbolt dungle, it suddenly stopped working. I thought this was due to the last loving moments of the dungle, so i bought one in the shop. that new one stopped working right after i plugged the hdmi exactly from the ps4 to the dungle. any one has a reason for this?

    M1 for OCR and word searches any good?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 08:42 AM PST

    Would the snappy M1 processors probably make searching for a specific word in a PDF uploaded through Mendeley any faster? Or doing optical character recognition on a PDF through Acrobat?

    These are the things that most typically annoy me in their slowness day-to-day. I would generally appreciate greater snappiness, but these are the main issues for me. So I am curious if anyone knows whether these are software limited things or whether the better processor would make them noticeably faster?

    M1 MacBook Air and AirPods Pro microphone connection not working

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 12:23 PM PST

    My M1 MacBook Air and my AirPods dont jive. While on FaceTime I can't use them because my microphone doesn't work so nobody can hear me. It refuses connect to my internal microphone on the M1 or my microphone on my AirPods Pro while while AirPods are in my ears.

    Does anyone else have this issue?

    Troubleshooting steps taken:

    1. 1) tried switching input and output devices
    2. 2) restarted the M1 air
    3. 3) forgot, then reconnected the AirPods pro
    4. 4) retried switching input and output devices.
    5. 5) went to reddit for help

    Also don't know if this is relevant but I refuse to think the "smart switching"is working correctly. 90% of the time it doesn't switch and the other 10% it switches incorrectly or will say its playing on one device when its clearly playing on the other.
