To everyone who is on the edge on buying an ipad pro instead of a laptop

    Posted: 11 Aug 2020 06:27 AM PDT

    Don't.

I see a lot of the posts with people switching and saying it's wonderful. Keep in mind people try REALLY hard to justify their purchase and to make it work. I love my ipad pro it's beautiful. I spent 2 years working with it now ipad pro 2018 12,9 256.

And let me tell you one thing : it's perfect for watching netflix, draw with procreate, do small project vidéos (only 6 pists in luma fusion, a lot of function missing for me even as a beginner). And that's about it for everything else a laptop is better !

It's not lightweight at all, with magic keyboard it's stupidly heavy ! I tried it for a week laught about how easy it was going dirty and since I got fucked once with the smart folio I won't get fucked twice with the magic keyboard. When you see the people protecting their 400€ protection because it's needed you know you have a problem. And don't make me start on how after you clean your ipad it gets greasy after 10 minutes of using.

Today I tried to open a word document my friend sent me for review. I tell myself hey let's use the ipad to annotate the mistakes and shits. Well after 30 minutes of trying I can't fucking open it without it looking fucked up. The fucking thing is trying to open in luma fusion ?! Because yeah you don't even have a proper app for word you can't use a document on your ipad you have to first download the document and export it to onedrive. It sill doesn't work tho.

Please to anyone who want to do real work just get a laptop.

The only reason to buy it is for the gorgeous screen and it being fanless to watch movie in bed. And even for this the angle sucks sometimes.

This is my 2 cents after really doing nearly everything with the ipad pro as en enthusiast. I don't regret my purchase but I would never buy it again. Feel free to ask any questions as I'm someone that really used it for 2 years and not just post a "wow I ditched my macbook and the ipad pro is doing everything but better for the 2 hours I used it look at how clean my setup is"

edit: To everyone saying their ipad is perfect for their workflow when they use a mac too I want to say it's perfect then ! But if you were on the edge of buying on or the other what would you chose ? We have a lot of students here who are thinking on getting an ipad pro instead of a laptop for the school year and people often say "Yeah it's perfect for taking notes and notability is insane with the recording !" and that's fucking true. It's even more true if you add that it can't do everything a student need ! It's a complementary object. It's a big iphone. So if you are on the edge verify that you will be able to do EVERYTHING you want on it and not with a lot of hoops and workaround that will make working even harder.

edit 2: Sharing the work of ahbi_santini2 because I think it's part of the really good reviews : "Review of iPad as laptop replacement for freelance writing / legal work"

It couldn't replace my Macbook pro completely but for some purposes it totally did. Now it's my go to device for recording screen tutorials, video editing, graphic work on Canva, browsing, media, reading and drawing. Video editing on iPad (Lumafusion) is at least 300% faster than on macbook pro.

Historical deprecation comparisons of highest end iPad vs Samsung Tab

    Tl;dr:

A graph to visually represent the data gathered. The Tab S and iPad Pro models with more than one size were averaged.

I was curious about how a Samsung tablet deprecates in comparison to an iPad, especially with all the talk of the S7/S7+ compared to the iPad Pro. Thus, I did a simplified analysis of the last few years of sales. All models shown are the highest- end WiFi models with the lowest storage for easy comparison. The "current price" values are based on Swappa's sold price. The value lost is calculated as (1-(Current Value/Original Price))*100. Feel free to point out any errors in my analysis.

Original Price Current Price % Value Lost
    Tab S6 (2019) $649.99 $490 24.61%
    No comparable iPad N/A N/A N/A

Original Price Current Price % Value Lost
    Tab S4 (2018) $649.99 $286 56.00%
    iPad Pro 11" (2018) $799 $639 20.03%
    iPad Pro 12.9" (2018) $999 $755 24.42%

Original Price Current Price % Value Lost
    Tab S3 (2017) $599 $229 61.77%
    iPad Pro 12.9" (2017) $799 $497 37.80%

Original Price Current Price % Value Lost
    Tab S2 9.7" (2015) $499 $141 71.74%
    Tab S2 8" (2015) $399 $101 74.69%
    iPad Pro 12.9" (2015) $799 $388 51.44%

I knew there was a considerable difference, but I didn't expect that large or a gap in value lost. The biggest surprise to me is the fact that it took four generations for the iPad to lose a little less than the value that the Samsung tablet lost in two. In short, the iPad holds its value roughly twice as long.

It is worth noting that technically the S6 and 2018 iPad are closer to half a year apart as is the S4. The S3, S2, and 2017/2015 iPads were released at roughly the same time. There's other factors at play as well. The big one is whether anyone's willing to buy the device even listed cheap. The 2015 iPad listings had recent sales from the last couple of days (it's at the bottom of Swappa device pages), while the Tab S2 had no recent sales at all. The market for a four year old iPad is very much there, but practically non-existent for a four year old Tab S device. If you bought the iPad ($799) and two S2s ($798) in 2015, you would have $186 more towards a new device from the iPad. That is, assuming you manage to sell the S2s at all.

I think the largest contributions to the drop in value are the larger price cuts on Samsung devices and the lack of OS updates. The hardware can be the best in the world, but if there's no official support for the device by the time you try to sell it, few people are going to want to buy. After all, Apple gives minimum five years of OS updates while Samsung is currently touting the guaranteed three as a huge upgrade from the previous two. (iPads seem to have a longer support cycle to begin with seeing as the Air 2, the mid-ranger, is on its seventh year of updates and projected to receive iPadOS 14.)

However, there's the flip side as well. A seller will lose out on the value tremendously, but if you're the buyer, the price you can snag an older Samsung Tab for will be considerably lower than a last generation iPad.

The upfront cost for an iPad is higher, but the money comes back if you sell the device. Actually, even if you don't sell the device, if it still does what you need it to, there's no need to buy a new one which saves money outright.

Graduate Student: I’ve been using the iPad as my only computer for the past year and a half.

    Posted: 11 Aug 2020 10:00 AM PDT

TL;DR: The iPad is way more capable and versatile than people give it credit for and its now my primary computer. Not for everyone, but works for me.

    ————————————

I'm a digital media graduate student and I have been using an iPad as my sole computer for the past year and a half.

I had fallen on hard times and couldn't afford to buy a new laptop; all I had was my 12.9 in. iPad Pro (3rd gen). I had heard for quite some time that the iPad can be used as a laptop replacement in some cases and I decided to give it a try.

After 1.5 years of using my iPad for my graduate studies, I can say this: I having a tough time going back to using a "normal" computer as my main. Here are my reasons:

    1. The iPad has some FANTASTIC NoteTaking apps which have completely changed how I take notes in my classes. I can take notes faster, reference them faster, organize my thoughts better, etc. The iPad just gives me far greater control and power over my personal learning than a regular PC.

    2. The👏Thing 👏 Just 👏 Doesn't 👏 Slow 👏 Down. I had been using a regular PC for years, until it died shortly before I started grad school. For a long time, I had dealt with paying for replacement parts, the OS slowing down, crashes, viruses, having to buy a new monitor/keyboard/mouse, etc. Since I've been using my iPad, those time/money expenses have disappeared and the thing is just as fast as the day that I bought it.

    3. With a few exceptions, everything that I had used my PC for, my iPad can do the same ( in some cases, better). I do a lot of video editing for my classes and LumaPro Fusion is a really powerful app. If anything, I can produce cuts of my assignments faster than if I were using Premier (can also export project files to Final Cut and resume working there). When I have to edit photos, Affinity Photo is a great app and functions very similarly to Adobe Photoshop (which is also available for iPad, btw). When I need to review and edit PDFs, PDF Expert by Readdle is one of the best tools i have ever used. When it comes to checking and sending emails, Spark allows me to rip through my inbox at an incredible speed. Pages allows me to write my papers. Keynote helps me make my presentations. The only exceptions are when I am required to produce high-end, graphic based content. What I am talking about specifically is motion graphics, animation, 3D modeling, etc. that type of stuff. It's less about the iPad not being able to do it and more about that fact that there just aren't any apps that lend these capabilities to the iPad (yet).

Considering all this, and given some time to adjust to the iPadOS ecosystem, I've had a hard time even considering a transition back to a "normal" computer. At the moment, I managed to purchase a MacBook Pro for my high-end graphics work. That being said, the only time that I use it is when I'm producing such content. The rest of the time, my iPad and I are inseparable and I use it constantly.

Granted, when I first started using it there was a mild transition period where I had to get used to doing things differently. I was used to doing things a certain way, by a certain means that had been hard-wired into me for decades. But, once I overcame this, things came very easily.

If you're reading this post, and are considering using an iPad as your main computer, I will end with this:

It can't do EVERYTHING (See #3). But it can do NEARLY EVERYTHING. If you are someone who relies heavily on unique, proprietary programs, this isn't for you. If you're not, it's worth considering.

P.S. I'm almost certain someone will say something about pricing. And I have this to say: I did not buy my iPad outright; I added a line to my AT&T account and paid for it monthly for about $50 extra on my bill per month. Also get to upgrade it like my phone every time a new one comes out.

Looking for an IPad Pro case that doesn’t have the flap or stand mechanisms. More “phone-like”.. Any recommendations?

    Searching for an app.

    Posted: 11 Aug 2020 03:06 PM PDT

I currently waste space on my monitor on my Mac to keep a browser open with an extension that rotates through different tabs while I am working so I can keep tabs on different things. Is there an app that would have this ability to do this, or am I asking too much of a mobile browser?

Should I trade my older ipad in for the ipad air?

    Posted: 11 Aug 2020 02:58 PM PDT

I have the older iPad pro 10.5 model. I got it 2nd hand months ago for 300 bucks. (Came with an apple pencil two cases and a charger) It works perfectly fine and I have no problems with it. I wanted this particular model of ipad pro because I didn't want the more fragile current model of iPad pros. Not to mention I love having a headphone Jack ( I like my options) I was looking at the trade in value of my current 10.5 ipad and Best buy would give me two hundred and ten dollars for it. This particular model is working fine, it was originally bought back in 2017 and its getting older. The battery health on it is at 83% I was looking at the current generation of 10.5 ipad airs and its basically the same one I have now but brand new. It will work with my apple pencil and fit in the case I already have. Should I trade in this iPad pro and get a new ipad air? The difference after trade in would be 440 dollars before taxes. Does this seem like a good idea or should I just save the money and keep the ipad?

iPad 7th Gen vs iPad Pro

iPad 7th Gen vs iPad Pro

    https://youtu.be/JQYFcSumCEI

I know it might sound weird, but I actually think the iPad 7th gen is the better buy if you want to use it as a laptop. It's so much cheaper, and yet you get a very similar experience. Worse screen and processor, but I don't really notice the latter in most of the stuff I do. Excited to see what the 8th Gen brings.

Also, the Logitech Combo Touch keyboard is awesome, and I'm so glad that there's now one for the iPad Pro as well.

Apple's 2nd generation Magic Keyboard is planned for March 2021 for the iPad Pro and Air

    Posted: 11 Aug 2020 06:58 AM PDT

According to the now well-known Leaker @komiya_kj , the second generation of this exciting keyboard case can be expected in March 2021, and unlike the current model, this case should also be compatible with the fourth generation iPad Air. From the tweets, however, it is not clear whether Apple will offer a separate Magic Keyboard for the iPad Air, or whether the case of the next Air is so similar to the 11-inch iPad Pro that the same keyboard fits both tablets. In any case, the next iPad Air should be expanded to include a large number of magnets .

Reading e-books: Translation and vocabulary list – tips?

    Posted: 11 Aug 2020 09:09 AM PDT

I thought about pepping my English by reading fewer books in my first language. Ideally the solution would give me the option to automatically create a history of words I had to look up.
Basically I would like to track the missing vocabulary without disrupting the reading flow too much. I'm aware it's more memorable to rewrite the words, but it would take away from the enjoyment.

Any idea for an e-reader or (device-wise) global app to accomplish this? Grateful for your input!

Has anyone ever gotten blisters from writing too much on their iPad?

    Posted: 10 Aug 2020 07:48 PM PDT

I was writing a lot with my pencil on the naked screen. Next thing I know, my pinky has two small rubbings on it that have since scabbed over.

What can mimic 3 fingers for the ipad?

    Posted: 10 Aug 2020 10:48 PM PDT

    Hi ipad users,

I'm trying to put together something so my partner can use the ipad while vision impaired. We've been trying to use the zoom in feature. Unfortunately, her hands are too shakey to use the " 3 fingers to navigate the screen" feature. I've bought her a stylus to help press single buttons.

Is there something I can craft that will act like 3 fingers that she can hold and swipe across the screen?

    Many thanks

    Magic keyboard arrow keys

    Posted: 10 Aug 2020 09:17 PM PDT

I recently got the iPad Pro and magic keyboard, and as I'm getting used to it I have found a really annoying problem. When I'm searching something on google and it autocompletes the search for me, when I instinctively press the arrow keys to select the search term below, a small dot appears and tries to drag the screen up. (Which I understand is supposed to be for scrolling without the trackpad.)

Is there a way to disable this feature? It is really been getting on my nerves since I have to use the trackpad to select what I want to. Will I just have to learn to live with it?

"Jumping" inside a page in a pdf file

    Posted: 10 Aug 2020 03:47 PM PDT

I'm new to the ipad and Apple products in general, but I specifically bought my ipad, because I found it was the best option for reading e-books. However, I was wondering which pdf viewer/document reader would have a really specific feature I really appreciated in my Kobo Aura One: jumping inside the same page in a pdf document.

When I would open a pdf, crop the page and then flip the screen to landscape mode, the reader would move through the segments of a page, instead of scrolling down or showing the entire page at once. Just as if it would flip a page in an epub document. Does any of the e-book reader apps in the App store have this feature? Thanks!
