    Apps freeze when mac is connected to Wi-Fi with no internet

    MacOS Catalina 10.15.4

    Whenever my macbook (13' MacBook Pro 2015) is connected to the Wi-Fi but the Wi-Fi is not connected to the internet, every app launch seems to take a long time to launch, freeze or outright crash!

    Safari freezes with rainbow cursor for more than a minute.

    VSCode and IntelliJ Idea Ultimate keeps jumping on the dock for more than 30-50 seconds when launched before actually showing up.

    Microsoft Edge outright crashes.

    FireFox Developer Edition sometimes freezes for more than a minute or outright crashes at launch.

    Chrome wouldn't even launch!

    iMessage, Mail, Terminal, System Preference, Network Utility and many other apps launch and work correctly.

    I don't think this is normal behaviour. Have any of you faced this issue? Is there something I can do about it?

    No, changing the time formats in Language and Region doesn't affect the menu bar time formats, unfortunately..

    Why are many streaming services and features blocked on Safari when it's significantly harder to record from?

    Recovering OSX journaled data from an accidental FAT32 format HELP!

    After many years of pretty good luck and smart file management i finally did something dumb that i'm pretty freaked out about.

    I was using terminal to reformat and make a windows 10 boot disk and while copying in a command prompt into terminal, one of my internal SSD drive's started reformatting immediately after i pasted it. I immediately quit terminal and realized the damage had been done very quickly.

    So i would like to recover the data that was on the drive before the FAT32 format. So far a deep scan via Disk Drill and ibeesoft Data Recovery have yielded no results. It's only finding a few files on the new FAT32 and nothing of the old data.

    Is there anything i can do to recover this? Am i SOL?

    Good news, i had recently backed it up but the bad news is i still have about a week or week and a half worth of work on there i'd LOVE to get back. Any thoughts would be massively appreciated!

    AirDrop freeze a lot

    Is it just me or Airdrop seems to freeze a lot while trying to send or receive data over AirDrop?

    Trying to receive:
    I upload some stuff using AirDrop and can see progress bar trying to start but not actually starting on my iPhone. There is nothing happening on my Macbook but fans usually got louder.

    Trying to send:
    MacBook pro just does not recognize anything. I own the company's Macbook (which is almost the same model) and everything seems to work OK.

    My Macbook Pro: A1708, i7, 16 GB RAM, 13", no TouchBar
    Company's MacBook Pro: A1703, i5, 16 GB RAM, 13", with TouchBar

    Both have the same macOS: 10.15.4

    Hi,

    My case : a folder with around 28000 pictures : family, kids, vacations, my precious folder I want to keep safe. Divided with folders : one year = one folder and inside, folders for months and / or events if revelant. Old-school style I know but it's safe... Everything on an external HD, which is on Time Machine and also online with BackBlaze...

    Now, to use an easier way to browse the files (face recognition, places...), I would like to copy these pictures in Photos but every time I try to import some folders, this is the dialog box I see...

    I've just downloaded Mylio to give a try. Made a folder with 1000 pictures, import went fine. One more 1000 pictures folder to import... Went fine. The free version is limited to 25000 pictures : let me try with 25000... Boom, 25000 imported, not a single corrupted file...

    Also imported in Better Finder Attributes and every file can be read, no sign of corrupted data...

    Have you ever experienced this dialog box ? ' Invalid : Couldn't communicate with a helper application ' ?

    macOS Catalina (Bootcamp): After installing Win 10 and switching back to macOS, I can't go back.

    I have installed Win 10 via Bootcamp (Win 10 Home) and after I have created Win Acc, updated drivers I switched back to macOS and now I can't boot back into Win. Holding option key doesn't work after restart.

    Why default Calendar is so annoying? How these events can overlap? When the first ends, the second begins. Not even adding 15 minutes delay helps. It's also very random (sometimes overlaps, sometimes not)

    Menubar app - single click to add note, auto-save, markdown. Does it exist?!

    My current first-world problem is this - I'm looking for an app for taking ad-hoc notes that does the following:

    • Sits in my menubar
    • Lets me start typing a note with a single click on the menubar icon
    • Markdown text, or if not, lets me choose a font (I prefer fixed width)
    • Auto-save what I type (locally, to the cloud, whatever)

    I currently use Tyke, which is fantastic, and meets all those criteria except Auto-save. And that has burnt me a couple of times, when I've re-started my Mac without remembering I had some text in it that I needed.

    I found another app called Jot, which does auto-save, but the font isn't fixed width. (I know, I'm being super-precious now.)

    Any ideas? Jot is open-source so I'm thinking about forking it and trying to work out how to change the font to fixed width but if anyone has any other suggestions...

    Request to help for first time clean install of macOS Catalina 10.15.4

    Hello everyone.

    I am a PhD student from a third world country.

    I have been using a MBP 9,2 (13 inch, mid 2012, 2.5 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i5, 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3) since August 2016. It is a good machine, but has slowed down extremely. I am saving money to upgrade my 512GB HDD to 512GB SSD, and the 2GB*2 RAM to 8GB*2 RAM from OWC/Crucial. I recently bought an external 2TB HDD to use as TM. After backing up with TM, I wish to do a clean install of the new macOS Catalina 10.15.4 so that it may speed the machine up a little before I do the SSD and RAM swap later this year.

    I just want to ask you all, what kind of speed bump I should expect with my machine after I do all the aforementioned changes. My parents are of the opinion, that I should instead buy a Dell Inspiron 14 5490 instead of taking all these pain.

    There are also a few problems with my machine, but I may mention that in comments looking at how this post turns out to be and if anyone is interested in helping me out a little here.

    Hello there! I am trying to fix a bunch of folder shortcuts that got broken when I changed the location of the original files on an external hard drive.

    Essentially, all I need to do is add "NewFolder/" to the path of all of these shortcuts to fix them. Example:

    /Volumes/VolumeName/Folder/....

    to

    /Volumes/VolumeName/NewFolder/Folder/...

    I know how to do it one by one, but that would take forever. So, I'm looking for an app, script, terminal command, automator, etc....or anything to help make this process go faster in any way.

    Does anyone have any ideas?

    (I am on macOS High Sierra)

    Urgent! Help needed trouble shooting external SSD boot drive crash after updating to Catalina

    I had been previously running Mohave on a 1tb external Samsung SSD drive. I started out fresh using it as an alternative boot drive (as opposed to the native hard drive on my 2012 Mac mini, instead of migrating my old hard drive over, I simply just started fresh with Mohave and moved some of what I needed via Dropbox. I have had this working fine for the last year. Then a few days ago I made the dumb decision to update the OS to Catalina. Everything seemed fine, but on day two my screen went black, and I had to force shut down the computer by holding the back power button. It rebooted fine and I was able to access my os on the external drive. Today it happened again, but this time after rebooting the computer there is only an option for guest user, and I don't see my user name at all, and NO PASSWORD WORKS!!! I went into recovery mode to reset the password (something I found on an Apple forum, however not regarding an external ssd boot drive), but I was only able to access the native hard drive!! It seems I have to way of accessing my external boot drive where all my current projects are. Having a mini panic attack here! Was I a fool in updating the OS on my external boot drive? Any advice on going back to Mojave without losing all of my files/data/Logic Pro projects?? Or any advice on how to stick with Catalina but gain access to my user account on the external SSD boot drive? Any helpful advice at all?

    HELP: Trying to create bootable High Sierra usb installer (I'm currently on Catalina).

    I've tried Apple's support page option https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201372 but I'm having issues because it directs me to High Sierra on the App Store but since I'm running Catalina, it's not available.

    Background:

    I wanted to do a clean install of High Sierra on my late 2009 iMac but for some reason I couldn't do it from recovery because of formatting issues (AFPS vs MacOS Extended Journaled).

    I then tried to do internet recovery but couldn't as well... argh!!

    So now I'm trying to create a bootable usb installer.

    Can someone please be of assistance because that 2009 iMac is still usable for basics browsing (8GB RAM & 256 SSD)??

    09 Imac recovery issue

    Hi All, i was given an 09 Imac which requires OsX to be set up on.

    I have attempted the following and gotten the results as listed.

    Created a bootable Yosemite & El Capitan USB with with GUID, System wont see the drive I have also zapped the pram. (Option key held, System startup disc select ect dont show it)

    Option - R - No dice it seems to have had Mavericks on it as it goes through the motions of an internet restore however it asks me to sign in to Itunes which then gives a busy try again later error. I found some information regarding going into help and support in utilities menu and logging into icloud from Safari on the system and then trying. However the safari browser refuses to connect to icloud.

    I have attempted other combinations of CMD + option ect but nothing works.

    Anyone have any suggestions as to what to attempt next? I would have attempted to create a bootable dvd however who has a disc drive these days :|

    Mapping Windows shares

    Hi there can someone please tell me how to have something like a mapped drive in MacOS. I can't seem to find it on the Internet and also the versions seem to differ. First of all you go to finder connect to server browse to the folders and boom you have access to them but if you shutdown they disappear and you need to connect them again. Also a persistent connection where you add it in system preferences also doesn't seem to work. I'm not sure what to do anymore.

    App Store shrunk my profile picture

    Hoping someone can help with this. I got an iPhone and Mac Mini a week ago, and when I set up the phone, it had me create a memoji which is asked if I wanted to sync across my devices. It looked good for a few days, but now it appears to have shrunk and shifted on the mac when I open teh app store. Tried restarting but no luck. If I go to icloud I dont see how to edit it without choosing one of the default pics. Has anyone ever seen this?

    help reinstalling my macOS

    Is it worth to upgrade an old iMac late 2012 8gb RAM to Mojave?

    Right now, this iMac is running OS X Yosemite. It belongs to my partner who never cared about updating or clearing old stuff, files and apps. It was loaded. We've already erased more than 400GB of trash and unused apps. It's running faster now, acceptable.

    I'm thinking whether either a factory reset or updating to Mojave (or both) would make the machine even better. I've seen some users regret upgrading to Catalina on old machines.

    I don't want to do anything wrong and make it even worse. Could you help? Thanks!
