MacBook Air 2020 Review after 3-4 weeks- My first MacBook ever. Posted: 14 Apr 2020 06:08 PM PDT Ok so again, this is my first MacBook EVER. I've never even used MacOS before and I didn't know how to close a browser. So for you who want a more practical review. Here it is! The model I got: MBA2020- i5, 8gb, 512SSD. My daily use consists of Safari (opening around 10-15 pages at once). Lecture videos, PowerPoints, word docs, PDFs, Onenote, Spotify. All at once. This thing works 100% perfectly. No heat issues, no delay or lags, and no issues. This includes Youtube, Netflix, Social Media, etc. Again, it all works great. First time using MacOS: Was a learning curve, but definitely liking it. The command key has various uses that can make your work flow very fast. I took a day or 2 to really make myself more efficient and customize my computer the way I want it. I also paid for an app called Magnet (in the App Store) for like $2 that makes split screen and multitasking a highly effective and productive. More importantly, Mac OS itself. it was only after I really dug into the computer and learned how it works to recognize that, yeah this shit is smooth. The only complaint I have is that File organization is pretty weird. In Windows, my files were organized in a specific way. Everything was in its place. I had thousands (Literally thousands) of documents, lecture and clinical files, etc organized. That is something you can't really do in MacOS. Well.... You can. But not nearly as well as windows. Especially an issue I find is that everyone uses spotlight. But what if you can't remember the name of the file you're looking for? Again, I have thousands of files. Very difficult to transfer thousands of files onto my MacBook. THIS IS THE IMPORTANT STUFF: CPU Overheating: Ok. This shit scared me when my MacBook was shipping. I was thinking "Shit. I wasted like $1000 on a computer that won't work." However, this is not necessarily true. The MacBook will overheat, only on programs that heavily intensive. For example, Chrome. When I used chrome, it gets to 90 Celsius in idle with fans going wild! Holy Shit.. BUT here's the thing. As someone who has only used chrome my whole life, I can say that Safari was not hard to customize and adapt to. In fact Safari is faster, smoother, and i'm currently running at 41 Celsius. Just learn Safari, and you will actually find out that Safari is better. Safari has a free adblocker that works well. Not just Chrome, but many other applications will not work without causing your computer to run hot! But wait! No one uses those apps! No one is rendering 4k video, playing video games, or shit like that on a MBA. The only thing that is mildly intensive is when I use Zoom for conference calls. It gets to like 70 Celsius. I also installed a paid app called Turbo Boost Switcher (just google it). It lets me configure and limit when turbo boost is on or off. Simply put. after having this app, there are no heat issues! Yes, I paid for it. You already paid $1000+, might as well pay $10 to make it work perfectly. Why not the Dell XPS or Surface Laptop 3? Yes the Dell XPS is a great laptop and yes the Surface is solid. First, it is the fact that a MacBook will last longer. Sure. BUT for me, it's the little details that matter more. This keyboard and trackpad is better, the shortcuts and gestures are faster. Seriously! The battery life is superior and it makes it so I can do things anywhere at anytime. Especially when the laptop is in idle, the battery does not go down. The speakers quality better. Personally this is really important to me as a musician. The build is superior. The resale value is higher. The only thing holding me back was the change from windows to Mac, and I figured I'd just learn. [link] [comments]
finally received my brand new macbook air 2020 Posted: 14 Apr 2020 04:33 AM PDT so after 3 weeks of checking the tracker 100 times a day, my new macbook finally arrived. i got the i5 with 8GB of ram and a 256GB SSD. during shipment i was doubting multiple times to cancel the shipment and get a dell xps instead (mainly because of the video's that mention overheating). now that i'm holding it (and using it) i have 0 regrets. setup went smooth, the initial setup, installing software and updating the OS. the past couple of hours i have been doing office work, listening to music, wrote a script to automatically mount my network drives and did some internet browsing. all of this while being hooked up to my external 1440p monitor trough a dongle that also has some usb ports and pass trough charging. not a single moment did i get the feeling that the computer slowed down. i can't hear the fan, it's spinning but very softly. i can feel an airflow at the bottom of the screen. the notebook doesn't feel like it's hot (a bit warm but nothing annoying or abnormal). i did not install fan control software nor a temperature monitor. i don't feel the need to do that. as long as it runs fast and doesn't burn a hole trough my desk i'm fine. i don't feel anything for fixing problems that aren't even there to begin with. also, the speakers are amazing, they sound better then anything i have in this house with built in speakers (and that includes my 50" LG tv) it's now playing music while i type this and i don't even feel the need to hook up my bose speakers to it (companion 2) if anyone wants me to test something ill be glad to do that for you. just don't ask me to install a bunch of software like cinebench and other benchmarks, there are enough of those on youtube. ;) [link] [comments]

Posted: 14 Apr 2020 12:01 PM PDT Hi! So I want to know the secrets to making MacBooks last 4-6 years. How do I treat my laptop properly so that I can make it last for as long as possible? I see all these posts about "treating your MacBook good" but what the heck does that mean? I want to know even the basics cause its obvious I have no idea how to treat my laptop with respect. I got a MacBook Air for my 16th birthday it lasted maybe a year before it gave me one of those prohibitory symbols. My brother then proceeded to try and "fix" the laptop instead of taking it to apple and ended up destroying the interior (literally ripped to shreds) so never figured out why it stopped working. I got a new MacBook Pro in 2018 and just this February it crapped out on me (no signs of life). Its been in the apple repair shop ever since, cause of the coronavirus backing everything up. Originally they said it was a failed logic board and that it should be an easy fix, 2-3 weeks pass and I got a call saying the easiest way for them to fix this was to just replace it with a new MacBook. Luckily I have AppleCare+ so its a free replacement. But that just goes to show neither of my Macs have lasted more than 2 years. I feel like it has to be something I'm doing since most people say Macs can last a long time. I'm a college student so my laptop is in use every single day for multiple hours at a time. I need this new one to last, any tips are welcome. [link] [comments]
Posted: 14 Apr 2020 11:22 PM PDT Hi all! New to this sub so let me know if this question belongs somewhere else. I'm thinking about buying a MacBook Pro for future studying/schoolwork purposes. I currently have the 2013 MacBook Air, which I have loved using for college and everything else. The only issues (if any) are that it's slowed down a bit and I just want a new computer that allows me to multitask faster, since I've started experiencing lagging and computer heating (I've also already replaced the battery a year ago). I'm not an Apple expert, so I wanted to ask if anyone had any opinions on whether I should (1) wait for a bit to buy a (??) newer model of the MacBook Pro (2) buy the 2019 MacBook Pro, or (3) get the 2020 MacBook Air. I'm hesitant to get another air bc although I love mine, I feel like the pro might last me longer and have more power (again not a computer expert lol) and i want another computer that'll last 7+ years. How to connect two HDMI screens to MacBook Pro? Posted: 14 Apr 2020 11:21 PM PDT Can you use two USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapters at the same time to connect two HDMI screens? Any other solutions? [link] [comments]
Posted: 14 Apr 2020 11:19 PM PDT Anything to do with commands, hotkeys, settings, and more tips would be great! USB-C Hub that is great but won't break the bank, preferably those hubs that go flush with the ports. [link] [comments]

Posted: 14 Apr 2020 11:18 AM PDT Hi, after downloading multiple BTT alternatives I decided to buy the real thing. Just as an appreciation towards the awesome developers. But I am not that good with scripts and everything related to that. So I am going to use the basics of BTT or maybe some presets I like. But is it worth it? Or do I need to consider looking into scripts to get the most out of it? Thanks in advance. [link] [comments]

Posted: 14 Apr 2020 05:10 PM PDT Hi All, Dunno if this is the right forum or if you take questions like this. The raw internet has been tremendously unhelpful so far. Earlier today I shut down my 2018 MBP while charging it - I had not done a full shut down in at least a week if that is at all relevant, and occasionally it dies and I have to plug it back in, where it will turn right back on. So I shut it down, and now it won't boot at all. Black screen. Nothing. I have tried resetting the SMC and the PRAM as I have had to do when macbooks of years past have started going south - but this thing is pretty brand new, and has ran near seamlessly until this point. Anyone experience this? Thanks. [link] [comments]
Should my 2015 MBP turn on without a battery? Posted: 14 Apr 2020 05:03 PM PDT Hello! I have a 2015 15" MacBook Pro that has a swollen battery. I've got a new one coming in the mail, but in the mean time, I unplugged the battery for safety. I have read things about MacBooks turning on without a battery, but their performance is throttled. However, when I plugged in my 2015 15" with magsafe, it turned on, displayed an Apple logo, and then powered off and entered a bootloop. Is this supposed to happen, or did I already mess something up internally? [link] [comments]
Help! First macbook, first dev job Posted: 14 Apr 2020 10:21 AM PDT Hello. I need some advice. This week I was going to buy my first macbook. A 2015 MBP 13" i5. I was very happy with this and looking forward to enter the MacOs world. But yesterday I started my first web dev job and I've been informed that all the backend it's in .NET Core. Can I program without problem in a Mac environment .net? (C#, SQL, Angular, etc) or should I go back in the purchase and buy a windows machine? tl;dr: Should I buy a MBP 2015 for .NET development or a Windows machine? [link] [comments]

Posted: 14 Apr 2020 07:50 AM PDT Hi I have a Macbook Pro 15 inch, late 2011. Two years ago, it started to have boot up problems. Just bought a new laptop at that point, but I'm trying to bring it back to life now. So here is what happens. I turn it on. It doesn't even go to the login screen. It worked for like two days but then randomly restarted while working. That was after I cleared and reinstalled the OS on my SSD. Steps taken: I took out all peripherals. I reset SMC. I already reinstalled OS on my SSD. I did a quick hardware test which came up fine. I did get a "service battery" notification. I ordered a new battery but not sure if that'll fix the problem. After a little while, I got an even darker blue screen like this. If you got any advice, please let me know. Thanks! [link] [comments]
Need some help regarding MacBooks Posted: 14 Apr 2020 07:44 AM PDT I'm not a Mac user, I've always used windows. My wife on the other hand swears by macs. She's recently gotten into YouTubing, and is in the market for a MacBook to assist with video editing and whatnot. I'm trying to get her an affordable MacBook, but I have no idea what I'm looking at. I can't drop 2,000 on the newest MacBook, but I can afford a 400-600 used MacBook. Is there a model I should avoid, should I just save up and get a newer one? What are the risks of buying one off of someone, say offerup or eBay? The best "value" I've found is a 2016 for $300, but even the refurbished websites sell them for 900. Any advice would be appreciated. [link] [comments]

MBP (Early 2015 model) Screen Issue Posted: 14 Apr 2020 09:31 AM PDT Hey all, I have a MBP that randomly decides to sleep when it's open, and when I close it the screen will turn back on. It's essentially responding the opposite of how it should when open and closed. I've had to use it cracked open about an inch and a half for the past week. Another bit of info is that this will happen completely at random. It will work just fine for weeks or months and then this issue will start and continue for the next week or so. I've been trying to find an answer for the longest time and can't find anything on google after trying tons of different searches. I hope I'm not just incompetent but I wouldn't be surprised if that's the case. Any and all help appreciated. Unfortunately my school is solely online now due to COVID, and Apple stores are closed so this is getting rough. [link] [comments]
