Macbook for college, Buy now or wait?

    Posted: 19 Jan 2020 02:28 PM PST

I can afford the entry level 13 inch macbrook pro right now but I heard a lot of bad things about it. I need a laptop for college, would i be better off waiting for the 2020 13 inch to come out this summer, buy the current 2019 or should I get an older model? I'm majoring in finance so I won't need to be doing anything crazy, but I also enjoy photography and music so I will probably be editing a lot of photos/videos and making songs.

Issues with MacBook Air charging port. It looks burnt/dirty

    Posted: 19 Jan 2020 08:51 PM PST

Hello reddit! So a few months ago I started to have some issues with my old magsafe charger, the power cord began to break and therefore the charger started to have some connectivity issues and also it got extremely hot. As I live in a country (Peru) with no Apple Stores I decided to use the charger anyways as I didn't want to buy one from the official Apple reseller, which is two o three times more expensive than the Apple Store in the US, also I had not planned a trip to the US till July 2020, and finally didn't want to risk my MacBook Air logic-board using a fake Magsafe charger. However, about month and a half ago it definitely died, and spent almost 140 US dollars on a new charger (from the official Apple reseller, iShop) because I use my Mac everyday for college and work. Since then, I have not had any problems with the charger as it didn't get hot, the connection is works great and the MacBook runs perfect.

However a few days ago I realized that the charging port was extremely dirty/burnt. I read that it could be that the port is dirty, so I cleaned it with a dry toothbrush and most of what seems to be dirty was gone, but it apparently, 2 of the 5 pins are burned, as you can see on the link ( https://imgur.com/gallery/WdbWU0m )

So in conclusion I really want to know if this is a mayor issue than it looks like and I should worry about (till now the macbook works perfectly fine). I am planning taking it to costumer support in the Apple Store in the US, as my parents are traveling to the US next month and the costumer support in the official reseller in Peru is ineffective and expensive.

    Thank you in advance.

BTW: Sorry for my English, my first language is Spanish.

BTW: I own a mid 2015 MacBook Air.

Should I keep my 2014 MacBook Pro 15?

    Posted: 19 Jan 2020 07:58 PM PST

I recently bought a a MacBook but my college doesn't really support it too much. I have another computer I can use for school and use this at home. Or should I return it for a windows laptop? My first MacBook so not sure it's worth it long term.

Anyone running Catalina on their 2012 MacBook Pro?

    Posted: 19 Jan 2020 07:42 AM PST

Just curious; trying to decide if my macbook would handle the upgrade to this OS. I upgraded the internals to a 500gb SSD and 8gb RAM a year or 2 ago, it runs very smoothly and handles the Mojave OS without a hitch.

Macbook Pro 13 Inch Release Date

    Posted: 19 Jan 2020 07:07 PM PST

    Hey everyone

Going overseas on May 29 this year and looking to upgrade my macbook pro beforehand, probably bundling it with an upgrade to my phone as well.

Just wondering whether there have been any leaks around specific timing for the refresh release date? My 2014 machine is currently functional, but definitely seems like it's an inch from death, and I'd probably prefer to not take it overseas. I'm pretty keen on getting the updated keyboard, as I have had keyboard issues in the past with other machines, and would rather not go through that again.

    Thanks!

    Subtitle availability

    Posted: 19 Jan 2020 04:30 PM PST

Hello /r/macbook. My wife is Japanese so I'd like to see a list of all movies with Japanese subtitles on the Apple TV app. I have a macbook pro. Lately a lot of movies have Japanese subtitles on the app, but many don't. Is there any way to generate such a list, or to filter available movies based on subtitle availability?

    Random Q: MacBook Charger

    Posted: 19 Jan 2020 06:07 AM PST

Why did Apple get rid of the little flippers on the power block?? I think of this every time I wrap up my cord and miss them dearly. I always thought it was one of Apple's greatest designs.

Buy new MacBook Pro now or wait?

    Posted: 19 Jan 2020 11:54 AM PST

    Hey everybody!

I have a late 2013 13" MacBook Pro right now and it is starting to show its age.

I am an iOS developer and also like doing video and photo editing occasionally, in my free time.

I've just received the base 16" MacBook Pro from work and there aren't really any restrictions of using it for personal stuff. But, you know... I want my own laptop, so I was thinking of buying a slightly upgraded 16" myself.

What do you guys think? Will there be a major redesign or upgrade anytime soon? There are rumors that in late 2020, MBPs will receive mini LED screens. Another rumor suggests that Apple would start using its own CPUs for laptops. Will there be at least a performance boost worth waiting for if they introduce the 10th generation Intel chips?

Do you think that waiting until late 2020 is worth it?

    Thanks!

Disk Utility first aid fail on brand new SSD in 2012 MacBook Pro.

    Posted: 19 Jan 2020 11:03 AM PST

Disk Utility first aid fail on brand new SSD in 2012 MacBook Pro.

    Hi all, here's the rundown;

I just replaced the optical drive in my 2012 MPB with a 960GB Kingston SSD. This additional SSD is to house all my music production sessions and audio samples (Ableton).

I followed the optical removal/SSD installation directions to a tee. The drive mounted immediately and I formatted it OSX journaled. All looked good.

So I started moving over Ableton and sample archive folders, all in, about 80GB of data thus far. I then began the big sync with Dropbox to back up that data from the new SSD.

This morning, I ran Disk Utility on both my HD and the SSD; the new SSD failed 😬

Screen cap of Disk Utility after running it on my brand new SSD.

    Questions I have:

    • is the only path here to reformat this drive and start again?
    • is it possible this is data-related and not really about the drive?
    • or is it likely this drive is faulty? (I have a 30 day warranty)

    Any help is appreciated.

EDIT: OS is 10.11.6 El Capitan

Top-Spec 16 inch Pro or 32GB Ram Upgrade?

    Posted: 19 Jan 2020 08:45 AM PST

I'm a software developer that occasionally run 2 vm, one for testing and one as development environment with about 3GB assigned to each. Should I increase my ram to 32GB with the base model or get the top-spec (non-customized) one? Price wise they are about the same.

PS: I did some test with 4vms open, loads of tabs and bunch of IDEs, and all the installed apps open, the memory pressure in the activity monitor is still green...

I constantly am switching between Mac and Windows, would doing this through Boot Camp possibly damage my Mac?

    Posted: 19 Jan 2020 08:31 AM PST

I need both of these operating systems because I use software that's exclusive to both. Will switching back and fourth between Mac and Windows on a Mac with Boot Camp possibly damage my Mac in any way?

2019 MacBook Air thunderbolt port defective

    Posted: 19 Jan 2020 04:24 AM PST

Hey I bought a 2019 MacBook Air in Nov last year and it's got two USB-c thunderbolt ports and from day one I had trouble plugging in the charging cable into the rear most port and I thought ok maybe it's not meant to go in there and so I've always plugged it into the other USB-c port and that has a nice audible click and is secure. Today I got a USB-c thumb drive and tried plugging into the rear most USB-c port and it too doesn't fit. Tried plugging in the power to that rear most port again today and it makes the charging sound but it jiggles all over the place and doesn't have a clicky sound. Is my MacBook Air defective ? I'm based in Australia and bought it from jb-hi fi, can I just go to an apple store to get it addressed ?

Bootcamp Gaming Drivers for MBP 16?

    Posted: 19 Jan 2020 04:16 AM PST

    Hey!

For the next few months, I'll play on my MBP 16" (Base i9). I mostly play things like Rainbow Six Siege, Dead by Daylight, League of Legends and light-ish VR games such as Beatsaber these days.

The MBP should have no trouble running those at full resolution low/medium settings, but should I use the base driver that are installed by bootcamp, or should I use the "gaming" ones from bootcampdrivers.com ? ("Adrenalin January 2020 Red Gaming Edition")

    Thanks

How to increase the life of my mid-2012 13" Macbook Pro?

    Posted: 19 Jan 2020 03:48 AM PST

My mid-2012 13" Macbook Pro is starting to show signs of wear and tear. I love this computer, especially because of the optical drive and abundance of ports. My love for it however doesn't fix it's issues. The screen is starting to glitch occasionally on the top left corner, it runs pretty hot (I use intensive programs like Final Cut and Logic, which take a few minutes to open), and some other small things.

I was wondering how I can increase the lifespan of this little guy, not really ready to part ways with it. I upgraded to an SSD a few years ago and got it running a bit faster, I also swapped out the battery. Something might be wrong though because I can't click down on the upper left hand side of the trackpad, it feels the exact same pushing down on the aluminum casing. Should I go in there and check it out? It's a third-party battery.

Thinking of getting a mid-2015 15" Macbook Pro (I can part ways with the optical drive, especially with the HDMI port on those things) or the new 16" MacBook Pro, just not excited about becoming a dongler. Heard a lot of bad things about dongles. I really don't want to have to move over to Windows if the problem isn't resolved with the USB-C.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks :)
