Split partition on Time Machine drive for Mojave/Catalina dual boot machine?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2019 03:13 PM PST

Can't upgrade to Catalina due to work, so I'm in the process of creating a dual boot situation on my trash can Mac: one for Mojave the other Catalina. I've read that TM backups can become a disaster when upgrading, so I had the thought of creating a new partition on my current TM drive so that I have that divide between Mojave backups and Catalina backups. Is that a recipe for disaster and I should just bite the bullet for a separate drive for Catalina, or can this work?

Apple watch unlocking MacBook when notifications pop up - searched online, followed the directions to stop this, still happens -- any help?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2019 09:32 AM PST

    Title says it all.

Super fucking annoying that this is happening.

How do I stop notifications from waking up my MacBook?

I turned on DND for notifications when asleep.

Has anyone else had this issue and if so how did you fix it if at all?

    Mail App on Mac OS

    Posted: 03 Dec 2019 04:44 AM PST

I often send PDF attachments from the Mail app (I am using Catalina). Every time I attach a PDF it shows a preview of the PDF wherever the cursor happens to be in the message. This is extremely annoying, especially when I am attaching multiple PDFs. Any idea how to turn this off?

    Recovery Mode

    Posted: 03 Dec 2019 03:01 PM PST

I'm not sure why my MBP is taking forever or freeze when I press the command and R button. At times, I get a globe and needs a WiFi password. Can anyone tell what is the proper way of doing it? I've been pressing and holding the two bottoms after the chime sound comes on. I also have two hard drives in my MBP not sure if this is affecting it?

Time Machine slow/stuck on 2018 MacBook Pro (touchbar)

    Posted: 03 Dec 2019 10:27 PM PST

3 laptops: 2013 MacBook Pro, 2015 new Macbook and 2018 MacBook Pro (touchbar) are backing up to the same Time Capsule in the home network. Time Machine works well on those old 2013/2015 MacBook, daily increment backup job takes 5-7 mins to complete, but Time Machine does not work well on 2018 touchbar model, daily increment backup job can take at least 30 mins up to few hours to complete, quite a few sometimes the backup process just stuck there at x%, I have to cancel the job.

Time Machine backup jobs start at different time in early morning respectively (eg, 2am for 2013 model, 3am for 2015 model, 4am for 2018 model), Time Capsule's network mode has been disabled, only used as NAS for Time Machine.

All 3 laptops connect to Netgear Orbi 5Ghz Wi-Fi. Time Machine connects to one of Orbi satellite.

I reformatted Time Capsule's disk, did a fresh backup for all 3 laptops, but still the 2018 model is extremely slow on daily increment backup.

What could be the reason? Is Time Machine expected that slower on touchbar model?

All 3 laptops are upgraded to Catalina, I don't remember I noticed this slowness in Mojave.

(BTW, I also tried Carbon Copy Cloner 5 to backup 2013 MacBook Pro disk image to Time Capsule, with both source snapshot and destination snapshot enabled. The first CCC backup took almost same amount of time as Time Machine (~3 hours), but subsequent increment backup took much longer time than Time machine, I thought CCC should be faster... I gave up CCC after that since its performance is so bad.)

Any advice on Time Machine on touchbar model?

Can I throw macOS on a flash drive (RAID)?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2019 06:24 PM PST

I have 2 USB 2.0 flash drives in RAID (FlashRAID let's call it) and I now have a total of around 100GB worth of one flash drive volume. But though, I want to have another macOS Installation on my MacBook Air without partitioning (it's only 128GB...), and I want to know if I can load macOS onto FlashRAID. Thanks in advance!

    Worth downgrading to High Sierra?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2019 09:49 PM PST

I was on High Sierra for a long time before jumping to Mojave a couple of months back. I fell in love with the dark mode option and the ability to group desktop files together.

Recently, whenever I connect my external HDD to my MacBook pro, the ram usage would skyrocket to 6GB. After doing some research, I have found out that some of my old movie files with custom icons is causing this issue, namely Iconiconservicesagent. I've removed and deleted the files with custom icons but the error still persists.

This issue never existed when I was in High Sierra. An alternative solution suggested was to downgrade. Would love to hear your feedback, thanks!

I can’t figure out how to back up my MacBook to a PC. Is this possible?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2019 03:28 PM PST

I've driven myself nuts googling it and can't find an answer. I'm hoping to backup my MacBook to a PC so that I can do a fresh install of macOS. My external HD just crapped out so backing up to a PC is my only option.

Can anyone explain how to share a link to a relevant site? Thank you all!

My old iMac isn't re-installing the OS

    Posted: 03 Dec 2019 08:24 PM PST

I found an old iMac that belonged to my parents, so I took it in so that I could maybe fix it.

(By the way, I'm pretty sure it is a Mid-2011 iMac)

I erased the hard drive (without thinking) so now I have to re-install Mac OS. In recovery mode, the option to re-installing Mac OS prompts me to install Mac OS Mavericks (it's old, but it was the last OS on the iMac).

I connected to the internet, pressed install, etc. and it started downloading. The problem is, it randomly stops downloading and brings me back to the utilities window.

I even tried to get a bootable USB (I was only able to get Mojave) but it showed a crossed-out circle. I'm unsure what to do.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. I can add more information if you ask in the comments.

Manually Adding Programs to Location Services

    Posted: 03 Dec 2019 04:24 PM PST

Is it possible to manually add a program to the location services list in Security and Privacy settings? I play online poker which needs to verify my location before accessing the application, but the application is not present on this list and is telling me I am not able to access the application from my current location after timing out on my location check.

    I'm running Catalina Version 10.15.1.

    File Transfer USBC?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2019 03:21 PM PST

I want to transfer large files from my MacBook (12 Inch Retina, Early 2016) to my Mac Mini (2018). Is it possible to use my MacBook USB-C port to the Thunderbolt 3 port on the Mac Mini using target disk mode? Is there a special USB-C cable i need to use, not the 1 that comes with the charger?

Always have to open the logi options app for my mouse buttons to work

    Posted: 03 Dec 2019 02:03 PM PST

I recently got the Logitech M720 triathlon and configured the extra button with the logi options app. After rebooting I realized that the extra button doesn't do what I configured in the app, after opening the app without any extra steps the button started working again. So it seems the button is only working after opening the app. Is this normal behavior for Logitech mice or is there an issue with the mouse or the app?

Currently I just set the logi options app as an log in object with the option „hidden" to get around this. But it's alway running in the background and consuming battery.

Upgraded to Catalina 10.15.1. VPN and TOR are now extremely slow. How to fix?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2019 03:11 PM PST

Just upgraded to Catalina 10.15.1 from Mojave and now internet speeds over VPN and TOR are super slow. Speeds are perfect when not connected to VPN or TOR. Everything worked perfectly prior to upgrade. I've tested the same VPN servers and TOR on another device and the speeds are also perfect, so the problem is definitely with the Catalina computer, not my ISP, VPN provider, or TOR.

Any know how to get this working properly again?

    Recovery assistant instead of Utilities.

    Posted: 03 Dec 2019 01:12 PM PST

My client's Local admin group lost its privileges and I need to get into the recovery utility (cmd+r) to fix it. Problem is, the Mac I'm fixing is on Catalina, and every attempt to get into the recovery utility brings up the recovery assistant (for changing passwords) instead.

What I've tried, cmd+r on boot, option+cmd+r on boot (internet recovery), booting from Catalina bootable install drive. All of these being up the recovery assistant instead of the normal utility that let's me use the terminal. One post recommended I change a password then it should let me in,but this also did not work for me.

I've noticed this on another Mac but found a solution that doesn't involve the utility for that Mac. Where the local admin group is all messed up, I need the recovery utility for this one. What methods does everyone use to consistently get to the correct recovery tool?

    Catalina download fails

    Posted: 03 Dec 2019 05:58 AM PST

I'm on Sierra and start downloading with the appstore. It downloads for about 50 mins, the bar fills up fully but then the download button is greyed out, after some time, it's back to normal. Nothing in applications folder and the total available space does not decrease. There is 275 kb download file only.

    Why does that happen?

Can you set up calendar reminders to stay on screen until you click them away for an infinite amount of time?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2019 04:10 AM PST

    Hi,

on windows I can only set the calendar notifications up to be shown 5 minutes. Okay, there is a function to keep them shown on the lockscreen when you were afk but it only covers a tiny portion of the screen and you could easily miss it I'd say.

Can I downgrade my brand new 2019 MacBook Pro from Catalina to Mojave?

Just wondering if this is (in anyway) possible. I'm trying to run Pro Tools 12 which is not currently compatible with Catalina. I've heard mixed answers online & can't find a solid answer.
