PSA Do not push any object into the hole of the AirPod Pro’s Eartip

    Posted: 31 Oct 2019 10:40 AM PDT

TLDR: Paper got stuck in my AirPod Pro silicon tip and I used an object to push it out ruining my earbuds mesh. Apple currently does not stock the Tip

Last night I got my AirPod Pro's and was delighted with the product so I thought I would try the other size tips to see if I'm potentially using the wrong size. Whilst getting the tip from the cardboard the paper ended up staying in the tip...

So I thought I could just push a needle through the hole to push the paper out I was wrong.. there is a mesh inside of the top to help protect the AirPod's inner grill.

I have been into Apple today and they don't seem to currently stock the silicon tips and I now my AirPod does not have the mesh between the AirPod and Earbud.

AirPods Pro vs. Powerbeats Pro vs. WF-1000XM3 (Bonus: vs. WH-1000XM3)

    Posted: 31 Oct 2019 10:17 AM PDT

I know a lot of people have been wondering how the AirPods Pro stack up against some other competitors. Now that I have the 3 mentioned in the title and have been able to compare, I thought I would do so. Throwing in the over-ear Sony WH-1000XM3's just for comparison on the ANC, since they're in a completely different category.

    https://imgur.com/a/FkBRRAm

Let's start with ANC, since that's the big new feature of the AirPods Pro:

    Active Noise Cancellation

    • AirPods Pro: 7/10
    • Powerbeats Pro: N/A
    • WF-1000XM3 (in-ear): 8/10
    • WH-1000XM3 (over-ear): 10/10

Hands down the over-ear Sonys win out of the bunch - nothing can substitute over-ear cans when it comes to ANC. That being said, the in-ear WF-1000XM3's do a really great job, and the AirPods come in just below that. I cranked up my Sonos system in my house last night and blasted it with white noise/airplane noise to simulate the effect, and these were the results I got. Just to clarify, the AirPods Pro ANC isn't bad, it just isn't the best of the bunch. It seems a lot of the reviewers who have been raving about the ANC, the AirPods Pro are their first pair of noise-cancelling headphones, so it's blowing their minds. The first pair of ANC headphones I owned (Bose QC 35 II's) blew my mind as well when I first heard the effect.

    Sound Quality

    • AirPods Pro: 7/10
    • Powerbeats Pro: 8/10
    • WF-1000XM3: 9.5/10

The in-ear Sony's win this one easily - the sound is crisp, clear, with defined mids and clean bass. Sony nailed the audio quality on these, whereas the Powerbeats are a little muddy in the mids and a little too bass-heavy, and the AirPods Pro come in just a notch below - overall they're just lacking the richness that comes from the other options, but still a noticeable improvement over the Airpods 1/2.

    Comfort

    • AirPods Pro: 9/10
    • Powerbeats Pro: 6.5/10
    • WF-1000XM3: 8.5/10

The shape of the AirPods Pro along with their light weight definitely make them the most comfortable of the bunch. The Sony's are just a notch below but are still comfortable after long listening sessions. Powerbeats are heavy and the outer piece will begin to get uncomfortable after a couple hours of wearing them.

    Battery Life

    • AirPods Pro: 7/10
    • Powerbeats Pro: 10/10
    • WF-1000XM3: 8/10

Not very subjective, just the facts here - AirPods Pro last 4.5hrs, Sony's last 5hrs and the Powerbeats last 9hrs per charge.

    Connectivity

    • AirPods Pro: 10/10
    • Powerbeats Pro: 10/10
    • WF-1000XM3: 7.5/10

Both the AirPods Pro and Powerbeats Pro win here with Apple's H1 chip for ease of connectivity. The Sony's are just like any other 3rd party headphone that need to be manually searched for and connected, and over my last month of ownership have been responsive in their connecting to the phone.

    Call Quality

    • AirPods Pro: 9/10
    • Powerbeats Pro: 5/10
    • WF-1000XM3: 6/10

AirPods call quality has always been top notch and the same goes for the Pro. With both the Powerbeats and the Sony's, people on the other end have reported hearing too much background noise, so the AirPods are the easy winner here.

    Case Size/Pocketability

    • AirPods Pro: 9.5/10
    • Powerbeats Pro: 3/10
    • WF-1000XM3: 5/10

While slightly larger than the original AirPods case, the Pros win again for pocketability. The Powerbeats are simply too big to be comfortable in your pocket, and the Sony's are only slightly more portable.

    Workout/Gym

    • AirPods Pro: 8/10
    • Powerbeats Pro: 9/10
    • WF-1000XM3: 7/10

Personally, I don't sweat all that much during my workouts so sweat/water resistance has never been high on my list of priority features for an earbud, however the AirPods and the Powerbeats are superior here in that regard. I've taken the Sony's to the gym many times and never had an issue with sweat/water damage, and their ANC being the best of the bunch definitely helps, but they are a bit heavy so during heavier reps when I am making funny faces, it tends to squeeze them out of my ears a bit. The Powerbeats are rock solid when it comes to staying in during workouts. I haven't had the chance to test the AirPods Pro in the gym just yet, so the 8/10 score is purely speculative based on how I believe they would perform, combined with some early feedback from other reviewers. It should be noted that having ANC in the gym is super helpful for drowning out exterior noises, and when I wear the Powerbeats I have to turn my music up considerably louder.

Ultimately these are all very different buds for very different purposes. Go with the AirPods Pro if you want decent noise cancellation, decent audio quality, easy connectivity, comfort, and you're willing to plop down $250. Go with the Powerbeats if you are ok without noise cancellation, if you want good audio quality (a little bass heavy) but needs something that will stay latched on your ear through even the most intense of workouts. And go with the Sony's if you want excellent audio quality, excellent noise cancellation, and are ok with putting the person on the other end of the line through some less than stellar call quality.

Hope this helps anyone on the fence in deciding between all these awesome buds!

My Airpods Pro vs Sony WF-1000XM3 take

    Posted: 31 Oct 2019 09:27 AM PDT

Got my pros yesterday. I have been using the Sony WF-1000XM3 since august and are very happy with them except for connection quality, which sometimes stutters.

    SOUND QUALITY
The Sonys wins this one I'm sorry to say. The base is much better and the whole soundspace seems bigger and "roomier". But the Airpods Pro are still miles ahead of the old airpods, though. All in all they have a very nice sound and I am going to sell my Sonys and use the pros as my only in-ear set.

    NOISE CANCELLATION
The Airpods Pro wins this one. They really surpriced me here. I was expecting them to be near the Sonys but IMHO the are better. They completely cancel out the aircon/motor of my car inside the cabin where as the Sonys cancels most of it but still leaves a faint hiss. I would go as far as saying they are very close to my over ear Bose QC35s, which is really really impressive for such small devices.

    FIT & Comfort
The Airpods Pro wins by a mile here. The Sonys make a tight seal but also gives you the feeling of being inside a bubble. When I first put the Airpods in my ears i though I hadn't pushed them "into the ear" far enough. They felt very light and almost like they weren't in the ear. But then the ANC kicked in and it was complete silence, but with the strange feeling of NOT having something stuffed into your ear canal. VERY impressive, Apple.

    TRANSPARENCY & AMBIENT SOUND MODES
Again - the Airpods wins here. With the Sonys on Ambient Sound mode they let outside noise in, but if you're trying to have a conversation with someone it sounds strange. My own voice is "off" and i find myself speaking way too loudly to the person in front of me. I always end taking the Sonys out even for short interactions. The airpods on the other hand - maybe because of the airway thing doesn't give you a strange feel and doesn't make your own voice sound weird. I can have a much more natural interaction with a cashier or make a short remark to a coworker.

TLDR; Sonys have (IMHO) slightly better sound, but Airpods wins out in ANC, comfort and transparency mode, so I'm selling my Sonys and keeping the Airpods. Also - i don't expect the airpods to have connection problems or any lag watching youtube/netflix, like the Sonys do.

    Highly recommends the Airpods...

AirPods Pro vs. Bose QC30 quick comparison and others

    Posted: 31 Oct 2019 02:02 PM PDT

    Hello all,

For the past year my headset rotation has been:

    1. AirPods 1 for day to day and calls. Easy to carry, easy to use, good for calls
    2. Bose QC30 for air travel and noisy environments when listening to music or video - but never calls. There are terrible for calls
    3. Beats X for mowing, etc. Noise isolation and I don't care if they get sweaty - where with Bose I don't want them trashed. But they sound poor and slip out of my ears. These are my least favorite pair
    4. Plantronics 3200 for amazing noise canceling on my outgoing calls, but horrible noise isolation for me. These are the best for calls but even in my car I have to use a foam earplug in the opposite ear or I can't hear well.

Now comes along AirPods Pro (APP) and I got them today. My goal is to replace all of these with AirPods Pro. Certainly over the next week or so I will be using them and my opinion may change over time. But lets start with the comparisons:

    1. ANC - Active Noise Cancellation. I really like my QC30 headphones. I had the QC20 before them and the ANC is a bit better on the QC30. But I don't carry them unless traveling and then they take up space in my bag and I have my AirPods with me anyway. So even if the ANC on the APP is not quite as good as the QC30, they should replace them. I don't use the Bose often enough to warrant keeping them if there is not a huge difference. And after testing for a couple of hours, there is not. Actually, I might like the APP better. I tried both pairs in a crowded mall food court, in the car with windows up and down, and in front of my computer playing the sounds of planes taking off through my speakers with subwoofer turned all the way up. My initial assessment is that the APP beat the QC30 by a bit. Amazingly, the APP's cut more low and high frequency sounds out than my QC30. I can't speak for the QC35 or Sony's or any others. QC35's are a bit better than QC30's. But the APP will be plenty good enough for me on future flights. I used this link starting at about 7:35 (and a few others) in the comparison: https://youtu.be/BjzDJhZDw3M ini iYy M y iny M .
    2. Comfort - Here is where my old AirPods excelled. I know they are love or hate for people, but I have been happy with them. I bought and returned a number of in ear wireless headsets that plug the ear canal because I HATE that plugged up feeling walking around or driving, or while speaking. Every step is a thud. I was worried about that with the new APP. I will say there is a little bit of that issue with the APP but nothing like a Jabra Elite 65t or something. The APP's have been very comfortable so far and I find I do not need to push them way into my ear to get an acceptable seal. The vents on the back make these the first in ear canal earphones that I don't mind. I do get a bit of closed in feeling but nothing like closed earphones. This is an 8 out of 10 for me. I find the Bose a little more comfortable in ear but I am not fond of the headband. Also the APP do not fall out (but the old AirPods didn't either). I really don't like the Beats unless I am mowing. Too much in-ear pressure.
    3. Sound quality - Obviously, these are better than the Beats (very muddy) and original AirPods. I want these to break in a bit before I make too much of a determination but I would put sound quality for music at about a 7. Bose is an 8 for me. The Bose are brighter in the mids and highs, and a bit crisper and fuller in the bass. I really like the way the Bose sound. The APP are pretty clear and better than the original APP, and the base is much better than the muddy, boomy Beats. But they need to brighten up to be closed to the Bose which are just clearer and fuller across the spectrum in my opinion. So to critically listen, the Bose are better. Not great but better. Is it enough to keep them and carry them? Uh, not for me it isn't.
    4. Ease of use - Easy to pair and easy to manage on my iPhone XS. I actually like the Bose in this regard as it can pair to both my iPhone and iPad at the same time and play media out of either without switching connections. I wish AirPods did this. But it is fairly easy to switch from the control center so no big deal.
    5. Phone calls - Too early to tell but so far on calls in the car and in my office, no complaints. The old AirPods were pretty good, the Bose and Beats were horrible, and the Plantronics is the best I have ever tried. But APP seems good enough for most situations and I don't need to shove a foam earplug in my opposite ear :) Time will tell.

So, my determination as of now is that I can sell my old AirPods, my Bose QC30's and the Beats X and hopefully recover much or all of the $249 price for the APP. There are a few compromises, but the best earphones you have are the ones you have with you :) And no other option is perfect. The APP is closest yet IMHO. Lets see how the next week goes with some travel.

TIL: Siri Allows Sending Messages using Natural Language

    Posted: 31 Oct 2019 10:41 AM PDT

So I've been so used to "Hey Siri, send <contact | alias> a message <text for message>" for so long that didn't know that you can just do something like "Ask my wife what time will she be home" and Siri will send the message. I just purchased AirPods 2nd Gens and and wanted to try out the automatic "Hey Sir" and when I said "Hey Siri" there was no audible beep she was listening and then she said "Yes??" So I just responded naturally "Ask my wife where is practice tonight" and she responded with the normal message confirmations. Even the question mark was added automatically since it's a question.

I don't know if this is part of IOS 13 as I know Reminders can be created with more natural language phrasing or it's been that way before iOS 13 but it definitely changes how I interact since I use Siri a lot. CarPlay, Apple Watch and now AirPods.

Update: So my original post implied that the resulting message would be contextually changed. So if I said "Ask my wife what time will she be home" it will send "What time will you be home?" That is not correct. Basically the only thing that's changed is no need to say "Send a message to...". Saying "Ask my wife" or "Tell my wife" is enough. You still have to correctly say what you want in the message including punctuation. Not as big of a change as I originally thought but still a little better.

After ditching my AirPods with WC case for the AirPods Pro, here are my thoughts. For those of you who are on the edge and can’t decide whether or not to buy/upgrade, this post might help.

    Posted: 31 Oct 2019 08:24 AM PDT

I'm currently a college student and I use my AirPods religiously every single day for anywhere between 2 and 8 hours. I walk to every class with them in, do my homework with them in, and relax with them in. My old AirPods (AirPods with WC case) were tied for my favorite Apple product with the Apple TV. I absolutely loved them. When the AirPods Pro came out, I drove an hour both ways to buy them.

After 24 hours, I can say that the Pro is a worthy upgrade for me. These things are really damn cool. However, given their price tag, I can understand where most people might be hesitant to upgrade to them from older AirPods. These are some questions you might want to ask yourself before upgrading:

Do your current AirPods fall out on a regular basis? I personally never had an issue with this, but I know many people did, especially when working out/running. Despite it not being a problem in the first place for me, I immediately noticed that these things are significantly more comfortable than the older models. I let a friend of mine who has struggled with this in the past try the Pros, and he said that they felt much more snug in his ear and didn't fall out nearly as easily.

If you're worried about these feeling like those cheap earbuds with silicon tips that basically stab you in the ears and never stay in, know that you won't run into any such issues here. The silicon tips on the Pros are very soft and are very comfortable in the ears.

I would say that if you currently have issues with the fit on older AirPods but still like them as a device, the Pros are certainly worth the upgrade.

Are you an audiophile? I'll be the first one to tell you that the AirPods do not deliver astonishing audio. They never have, and the Pros are no different. Having said this, I noticed a huge increase in sound quality over previous models with the Pros. The vocals were a particularly weak area for the previous generations. Vocals sound much crisper now. The bass is also much clearer and deeper. These sound much closer to what you're paying for than previous generations.

Another benefit I have noticed is that these AirPods leak sound significantly less than previous models.

However, the improvements in sound quality alone don't warrant an upgrade unless you have the money to do so.

Do you work/commute in noisy environments? The noise cancellation is really damn cool. It works surprisingly well given the size of the headphones. It won't block out all of the sound of a plane, but it will definitely get rid of chitter-chatter and other light ambient noises around you.

Having 3 modes to choose from is awesome. I use the NC most of the time, but transparency mode is great if you need to hear what is going on around you.

Seriously, the noise cancellation blew me away. If you work, commute, or do anything in a distracting environment and want to alleviate the distractions, the noise cancellation is brilliant. When I'm walking to class I can hear absolutely nothing but my music and it is so relaxing.

The AirPods Pro have quickly become my favorite Apple Product. I got the same feeling of excitement when I used these for the first time as I did when I used the originals for the first time.

This might be a pointless post, but hopefully I can help at least someone with their decision. If anyone has any questions, feel free to shoot me a PM!

    Airpods Pro- A Review

    Posted: 31 Oct 2019 11:04 PM PDT

I got my AirPods yesterday at in store pick up and have had some time with them. (Sorry for formatting issues, I'm on mobile)

This short review is from a previous Gen 1 AirPods owner who used them for 6-8 hours a day pretty much every day, but is not an audiophile in any way and has had minor experience with ANC headphones.

SOUND QUALITY: It's a step up from the original AirPods but only by a little bit, like I wouldn't buy these if thats your main want.

COMFORT: I used the medium sized tips for about an hour and they were not very comfortable. I then switched to the smaller ones and had a drastic increase in the comfort level with no difference in the ANC quality. They are tied with the originals for some of the most forgettable feeling earbuds- which is a good thing.

CASE: Kinda strange at first but when you realize that sideways its only a little bigger then the Gen 1 case its really feels the same from a pocket-ability standpoint. Great case.

ANC: It does a great job of removing the super annoying sounds and muffling the others, and combined with music it works wonders. I also feel no weird pressure issues with it active. Someone coming from AirPods Gen 1 or 2 will be blown away by this, just like I was.

TRANSPARENCY: This is an underrated feature, and is great to have the old AirPod feel. It sounds pretty natural and has no weird amplification from what I hear. No audible delay from what I can tell.

AMBIENT EQ: I can tell a slight increase in the clarity of music when ANC or Transparency is active, which turns on the EQ. Honestly I would have one of these on at all times because the change in battery is not noticeable.

All in all this was a great purchase for me as an upgrade to my other ones that have much shorter battery by probably and hour or so. I will say however that unless you really know you want the new modes then maybe don't consider purchasing.

And for people who had fitment issues in the past, these are just like other in ear earbuds so they'll most likely work for you, based on what my friend who has these issues has said when I let him try them.

    AT&T Offering 32GB AppleTV 4K for $90

    Posted: 01 Nov 2019 02:18 AM PDT

    My Review of AirPods Pro.

    Posted: 31 Oct 2019 10:12 AM PDT

So first some backstory; I first got my first AirPods on the first time they released (Gen 1) and I've never upgraded them since then, apart from them getting quieter over time I never really had any problems with them, great headphones, so I hesitated on gen 2 because there wasn't enough differences for me to care about it.

When I first saw Apple's release video on Tuesday I thought there's no way I will get those, at least not until I save up because they are expensive, but today was my first day off work and watching Tailosive Tech and UrAvgConsumer talk about the new AirPods and I realised for what they are the price really wasn't that bad, do I drove to pick some up this afternoon (roughly 5 hours before writing this post)

The first time I put them in my ears (in the middle of a busy shopping centre) my first thoughts were "HOLY SH*T!!" The noise cancelation on these things is crazy! (bearing in mind I've never used noise canceling headphones before (my only headphones have been apple EarPods included with the phone or AirPods, so I had no idea what to expect but so far I love them, sound quality is great, noise cancelation better than I expected, and if you are on the fence I would definitely recommend you get some.

The only thing I wish I knew before I tried them, and what I would recommend to anyone else, UPDATE YOUR IPHONE before you get some, as you can't use full features unless you do, which was annoying but not the end of the world.

If you've read this far then thanks for reading! Just wanted to share my thoughts so far.
