[Meta] Introducing The Sentinel Bot, SickKids Foundations update, and taking action against YouTuber disinformation

    Posted: 20 Feb 2019 02:55 PM PST

    Hi r/jailbreak,

    The Sentinel Bot

If you kept an eye out on our moderation list, you will see that recently, we added a new moderator to the list, u/TheSentinel_20. Your new robot overlord has the job of removing the channels/profiles that we've blacklisted. These channels/profiles can be from YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, DailyMotion, Twitch, etc.

We will use this bot to automatically remove any YouTube/Twitter accounts that we blacklist, or that the person who manages said channel/profile asks us to. From our end (ie. from our decision), we've blacklisted "iCrackYouriDevice" (Twitter+YouTube, more on that below). On the other hand, these developers have asked us to prevent users from linking to their profile:

    • CoolStar (This does not include Electra, Anemone, or Sileo Twitter accounts)

    • CokePokes (Twitter)

    • GeoSn0w (Twitter and YouTube)

    SickKids Foundation Update

On Monday, u/Applango offered a bounty to a jailbreak developer for an iOS 12.1.2 jailbreak (with A12 SoC support) to be released within 48 hours. Applango also offered to increase their bounty if users donated to the SickKids foundation in memory of their deceased brother. A few hours after that post, Pwn tweeted that the OP should contact him. Pwn's tweet also caught the attention of Tony from iCrackUriDevice. Tony published a video that essentially called OP's bounty and donation info a scam. We will not link the video for obvious purposes.

After that video was published, Tony came to the sub and posted what was said in the video, in a now deleted text post. This prompted an investigation by us. We did our own research before deciding if we should remove Applango's post and/or banning Applango. The conclusion of our investigation told us that the bounty, and the donation was legit. You can read a detailed conclusion here

The donation page, was filled with hate/toxic/childish comments after the video was uploaded, leading OP to disable to the fundraiser (and stop taking donations entirely) and SickKids from removing/deleting it given the false concerns that rose from ICU's video.

    iCrackUriDevice Ban

Given the events explained above, we've decided to ban /u/Tony2324 from the subreddit for misinforming users, and remove any post/comments that link to his videos/channel, or their Twitter. u/TheSentinel_20 will remove links to the aforementioned places with no warning (as the bot doesn't comment on removals).

If you have any concerns with what was discussed above, let us know!

    Thanks

Stay damn patient and we'll get to use the Jailbreak that Coolstar and Pwnds both respective teams come up with in the next couple of weeks

[Discussion] Who would be interested in an update to wifiFirmwareUpdater?

    Posted: 20 Feb 2019 06:25 PM PST

Hello, I am the developer of wifiFirmwareUpdater. I am now under the name TurntTonsils, the greatest possible name I could come up with. wifiFirmwareUpdater is a tool that utilizes wifiFirmwareLoader which is already present in iOS itself to load a custom WiFi firmware, typically coming from newer iOS versions.

    Why is this useful?

Exploits in the WiFi firmware itself are patched when using newer WiFi firmware

Remember Broadpwn from iOS 10? Riley Angus, the developer of Liberty discovered the arguments that wifiFirmwareLoader takes and demonstrated how it can load WiFi firmware of newer iOS versions, and also proved that Broadpwn was patched while using newer WiFi firmware here: https://www.reddit.com/r/jailbreak/comments/6scs80/tutorial_possible_method_to_patch_broadpwn_wifi/

So basically, if a major WiFi vulnerability is discovered and it is patched in a newer update of iOS, you don't have to update your iOS to patch it with my tool.

If I were to bring my tool back there are a few things that I would need assistance with:

    1. Making the tool legal by using a tool like partialzip to download the correct WiFi firmware from an IPSW without having to download the complete IPSW.
    • I had conflicts with people over the fact that my tool came shipped with the firmware included and I was technically legally allowed to this, but at the time I felt it was necessary to widely patch Krack on iOS 11 and Broadpwn on iOS 10.
    1. Testing
    • I would need a lot of beta testers. The hardest thing about making the tool work correctly for me was that some A7 devices didn't use wifiFirmwareLoader, they used wifiFirmwareLoaderLegacy, which judging by the name is used with older A7 devices. These devices only required using 2 of the arguments that we use in wifiFirmwareLoader, meaning they only require 2 files instead of 4 to load the firmware. I need to know which devices do this, and figure out how to detect these devices - perhaps a certain model of the 5s does this.
    1. Making a GUI wrapper
    • Honestly, I and many of you may not mind using a CLI tool, but it would be much easier if we could simply press a single button that searches, finds, downloads and loads the WiFi firmware. This would be my final goal before releasing it. It would also be nice to add an option for advanced users to upload their own firmware to load.

Why did I take down wifiFirmwareUpdater?

    • Mostly because the conflict of figuring out how to load firmware on A7 devices was at the time above my pay grade, and so was downloading the WiFi firmware properly. I feel that I am more capable of these tasks.

Please leave feedback below regarding if you would like to see this made, and definitely let me know if you would like to assist me in achieving the goals above.

[Tutorial] Restore iOS Backup on Older Firmware

    Posted: 20 Feb 2019 05:41 PM PST

This is just a really Quick'n'Dirty I wrote for the people who are asking about restoring a iTunes backup, that was made from a newer iOS firmware, on to a older iOS firmware. I realize this will probably get buried but I feel this is better than continuously answering the same question. I only made this because I'm at work and couldn't find a good TT upon searching.

    Windows:

    1.

    Open iTunes.

    2.

Locate the iTunes folder that contains your backups.

    3.

Inside folder, you need to locate the backup you want to restore.

    4.

Inside the backup's folder you must locate the info.plist file.

    5.

Open .plist file with your preferred.plist editor

+Some plist editors are Plist Editor, Plist Pad, and PlistViewer

+I have used a simple text editor to edit .plist but I recommend using a proper Plist editor.

    6.

Inside the .plist file, locate the product version string.

    7.

Once you locate the Product Version string you need to change it to the iOS version that you plan to perform the restore on; or below.

    8.

Return to iTunes and restore backup as you normally would.

    Mac:

    1.

    Open iTunes.

    2.

Hold "COMMAND" and press "," (comma)

    3.

Click "Devices" in the pop up that appears.

    4.

Choose the backup you plan to restore.

    5.

Right click on the backup that you plan to restore.

    6.

Select "Show in Finder" from the drop down menu that appears.

    7.

From within finder, open the .plist file with your preferred .plist editor

+A plist editor of note is XCode it can be found in the AppStore

+I have used a simple text editor to edit .plist but I recommend using a proper Plist editor.

    8.

Inside the .plist file, locate the product version string.

    9.

Once you locate the Product Version string, you need to change it to the iOS version that you plan to perform the restore on; or below.

    10.

Return to iTunes and restore backup as you normally would.

    —————-———————-———————————

+This should work for backups with and without encryption.

    Posted: 20 Feb 2019 08:11 PM PST

Currently running on 12.0 and absolutely planning on using the unc0ver jailbreak. Haven't run a jailbreak in quite some time now, last one I used was green poison ages ago. With the way jailbreaks are functioning in 2019 what would be the best way to backup phone so I could restore in case of a severe bug that was somehow missed by the private beta test? I'm assuming apple will stop signing b3 soon, so looking ahead.

    [Request] f.lux iOS or BetterNightMode

    Posted: 20 Feb 2019 10:42 AM PST

I am asking for a developer to build a tweak that expands the versatility of the night mode feature. The night mode feature adjust the amount of lumens on the screen for your eyes to see, usually for when you are viewing your screen at night. Features would include: manual location selector for automatic sunrise and sunset lumen changing, presets such as candle or sunset, and also a manual control to adjust automatically your brightness levels and night mode levels throughout the days and months or seasons. Basically the first two were three teachers were already from the desktop app on computer is called f.lux. https://justgetflux.com is the website to get the app so you can see all of the features it has to integrate into the tweak
