Good Boulder Dash games on iOS?

    Posted: 11 Oct 2018 06:33 AM PDT

I'm looking for some good Boulder Dash games for iPhone. So far I've played

Boulder Dash® 30th Anniversary from BBG Entertainment GmbH https://itunes.apple.com/app/boulder-dash-30th-anniversary/id865484224?mt=8 → I really liked this one!

Emerald Mine from Les Bird https://itunes.apple.com/app/emerald-mine/id448002032?mt=8 → Levels are great but the controls are horrible IMO

Dig Out! from ZiMAD https://itunes.apple.com/de/app/dig-out/id1135368655?mt=8 → mediocre, I prefer real hand crafted levels instead of randomly generated levels.

Are there any other good games I have missed?

What games should I get that work on an SE?

    Posted: 11 Oct 2018 02:47 AM PDT

I'm looking for some paid games (I play on the go) to buy with a gift card. I've gotten a few ideas but I would like to see what others think. I'm looking at buying 2 games.

First of all, the game I'm definitely going to buy no matter what is Rush Rally 2. Looks great and the price is a steal.

Now for the games I'm considering buying.

    1. Warbits. Looks decent but I have no clue how it plays.

    2. Grid Autosport. I have a few questions about this one. Is a SE screen a good size to play it on? Does it drain tons on battery? Are the controls hard? Everyone says it's the best Racing game on IOS full stop but I don't know how it will play on my phone.

    3. GTA (any one). Which GTA should I buy? Is Liberty city stories better than San Andreas?

    4. Any other titles I could consider?

Like I mentioned above; I only want to buy 2 games, so i have a choice of Warbits, Grid and GTA because I'm definitely buying Rush Rally 2.

Any help is appreciated, thanks in advance.

Incredibly convoluted way to use emulators...don't try this at home, it's dumb.

    Posted: 10 Oct 2018 09:44 PM PDT

So I had this idea for an incredibly convoluted way to use emulators without jailbreaking or side-loading. Here it is. Don't say I didn't warn you that it is incredibly dumb.

Edit to add: as /u/GOATSQUIRTS points out, there is always Moonlight (gets around having to use KinoConsole and a VPN server). But that only works with Nvidia graphics cards. So if you're like me and have an AMD, you're SOL with Moonlight.

    Hardware needed:

    1) A PC running Windows 7 or higher (I use Windows 10).

    2) An iOS device (I use an iPhone 6s+).

    3) An MFi controller (I use a Gamevice).

    Windows software needed:

    1) Steam.

    2) SoftEther VPN server.

    3) Retroarch.

    iOS app/configs needed:

    1) KinoConsole

    2) VPN configuration

...and now we're off to the races.

After the Steam Link app got rejected I started thinking about a way to get around it without jailbreaking. I came across an app called KinoConsole made by Kinoni. It works by connecting to your desktop much like the Steam Link app would (and it uses Steam Big Picture just as the Steam Link app would).

The problem with that solution, however, is that the iOS version of KinoConsole must be used on the same network as the Steam computer. (The Android version allows remote play, but there must be an Apple policy preventing it on iOS.)

However, there is a way around this! You can set up a VPN server on your Windows machine and then use iOS's built-in VPN client to connect to it so that your iOS device thinks it's on the same local network.

Unfortunately, the stock Windows 10 VPN server is PPTP and iOS doesn't play with PPTP because it's ridiculously insecure. So you have to install a different VPN server on Windows, and the one I found that works well and is free is SoftEther VPN. Configuration is not exactly what I'd call straightforward (and the instructions are not from a native English speaker, as the software was developed at a Japanese university), but if you've gotten this far, you're both insane and probably capable of figuring this thing out. The one piece of info that I didn't find easily was that you need to make sure UDP 500 and 4500 are port-forwarded in your router to your Windows computer. (I thought at first that it was some different ports, the ones the server normally listens to, but nope - the hoops you have to go through for iOS connection require UDP 500 and 4500 to be forwarded to your Windows machine.)

Once you have the server set up, you create a VPN configuration on your iOS device that connects to it. If you get an error that says it's not responding, well, that's your UDP port forwarding problem, most likely.

Next up, install Retroarch on your Windows machine, install the cores you want to use and point the program to the ROMs you have. Then, add Retroarch as a non-Steam game in Steam.

Inside Retroarch, configure it so that it opens up into Full Screen mode, and set the full screen mode to Windowed. (If you don't set it to windowed, the KinoConsole host has a tendency to crash Retroarch.) Go into the Input settings and set the on-screen menu toggle to L + R, so you can use your MFi controller to get back to the menu when you're inside a game.

    Don't worry, we're almost there.

Install the KinoConsole host on your Windows computer. You don't need to create or use a Google Play login since that only matters for Android. Make sure you have the 1.51 version of the host and not 1.60 (unless you're made of magic and can get 1.60 to work properly - I can't). The 1.60 version downloads from the KinoVR page on the website; the 1.51 version downloads from the KinoConsole page. Then install the KinoConsole app on your iOS device. (I haven't tried KinoVR yet; it should still work in 1.51 since the option appears to be there. Could be fun. Could be just as dumb as everything else I'm doing here.)

If you're on the same local network, or you have the VPN running and connected, you should now see your Steam icon inside KinoConsole on the iOS device. When you tap it, your Windows computer will load up Steam in Big Picture mode and then your iOS device will display Steam.

At this point you should probably have your MFi controller set up and ready to go. KinoConsole plays really well with MFi controllers, but there's still one hurdle left: MFi controllers don't have Back/Select or Start buttons (or L3 and R3 for that matter). Many emulators are going to need these buttons in order for the console to do its thing.

To fix this, swipe in from the left side of the screen inside KinoConsole once Steam Big Picture is running. You can then use the third icon down to configure on-screen buttons to replace Back/Select and Start. (Note that getting these on-screen buttons to register may require something like a long press. A simple tap, in my experience, doesn't do the trick, but that may just be because of all the craziness in between the app and the game.) I put my Back button in the lower left corner and the Start button in the lower right, just to keep them visually out of the way. Do what makes you happy.

    You are now finished.

If you've done every stupid thing correctly, you now can do the following:

    1) Fire up your SoftEther VPN server on Windows (have it run at startup so that you only have to do this once).

    2) Fire up the KinoConsole host on Windows (again, have it run at startup so you only have to do this once).

    3) Connect to the VPN in iOS Settings (unless you're on the same LAN, in which case, ignore this step and step 1).

    4) Open the KinoConsole app on your device.

    5) Tap the Steam Big Picture Mode icon.

    6) Navigate within Steam Big Picture (on the device, using the left analog stick or on-screen equivalent) to Retroarch.

    7) Open Retroarch and navigate to your game (on the device, using the D-Pad or on-screen equivalent).

    8) Play your game.

I haven't provided a whole lot of detail on each of these steps but I'm happy to answer questions, if I remember the answers. I spent about 3 hours getting all of this set up (though most of that was trial and error). If you already have a Retroarch install working and can figure out SoftEther VPN on your first try (or know what you're doing with it in the first place), you can probably get all of this done in less than 30 minutes.

This solution also lets you play other controller-based Steam games. If you ignore the Retroarch portion of the instructions, you can still use this as a workaround for not having a Steam Link app. And if you don't care about playing games away from home, you can ignore the VPN crapadoo.

I hope this helped. If it didn't...I understand. I recognize how dumb this is. Thank you for reading. I'm sorry.

Looking for a game (specifics inside)

    Posted: 11 Oct 2018 01:48 AM PDT

Hey, so I'm getting bored with the progression in gacha games and am looking for new games to play while waiting for Ragnarok M. Some specs I'm looking for is.

    • Arena/Skill based (Kinda like how FF Dissidia in PSP/PS4 plays)

    • Competitive multiplayer

    • Short gameplay(Somewhere around 5-10 mins on casual games)

I know my description pretty much screams MOBA and maybe it does and I'm currently playing Arena of Valor on the side but I'm looking for something that plays shorter and has lesser player in one game like 3v3 or something. Thanks!

Hamachi VPN for local network gaming

    Posted: 10 Oct 2018 11:20 AM PDT

Has anyone had any luck playing civ 6 on a VPN with another player?

I have created a Hamachi mesh network and added a iPhone and iPad. They are able to ping each other and both have access to the internet.

However, when I boot up civ 6 I am unable to see any local games from the other device.

I know there is an entire book full of potential issues I could be missing, but I wanted to see if anyone has actually had success with civ 6 and a hamachi VPN on iOS?

Non-crap Match 3 games for my mom?

    Posted: 10 Oct 2018 02:47 PM PDT

My mom loves Jelly Pop Match and other games like them. Except they're pay to play and filled with ads. Tomorrow we're going on a 15hr+ flight and she's worried that she won't be able to play games the whole time.

What are some good match 3 style games that are add free, and high quality? Don't care if they're free or not, just looking for quality here.

    Thanks!

Edit: she's looking for simple stuff

Best iOS device for playing 32 bit games?

    Posted: 10 Oct 2018 01:50 PM PDT

I am looking for maybe an iPad 3rd gen as my retro iOS gaming machine. Is this the best? Max iOS of 9.3.5 and it's retina too. Can get one for around 120-160$ for 32gb.

Is this a good bet or is there another device that'll be way better in the long run? I'm looking to get Jelly Car, Tap Tap Revenge, and all sorts of 32 bit games I missed out on (or still have in my iTunes library).

    Thanks!

    Would you recommend Reigns?

    Posted: 10 Oct 2018 01:41 PM PDT

I've been debating with myself if I should buy Reigns. I think it is the kind of game I would like, but there is somethings that I wanted to ask.

    • Is the game long?
    • How about replayability?
    • Should I get both of them?
    • To play the second game I have to play the first one?

    Thanks in advance.

Edit: I saw that they are launching a Reigns game on Game of Thrones universe. Should I wait for this version?
