Looking for a fun but simple RPG style game to play

    Posted: 20 Oct 2018 10:03 PM PDT

Hi all, like many I struggle to find that game that will satiate my desires. I don't want a pay2win and therefore am happy to pay for the right game (however I poured 6 months into FEH last year).

I have 2 young children and work full time so I need a game that can easily be picked up and played for 5mins but can also handle longer sessions. I love games where you upgrade your character/village/town without crazy depth to it, so nothing like a FFTactics. Also enjoy cartoony, fun art style.

Some other titles I've tried and enjoyed - Various Kairosoft games - Battleheart - Kingdom Rush - A dark room - The Bonfire - Kingdom New lands - Loved the art style and simplicity of FEH but it became too hard to keep up with all the match types and time required.

Sorry about the long post. Looking on this sub it seems that many people feel my pain of finding that perfect game to fit your interests and needs.

TLDR: looking for a fun RPG that is easy to pick up but has high replayability or late game.

List of Steam games also on iOS?

    Posted: 20 Oct 2018 07:33 PM PDT

I've searched around a little bit but can't find a list. I'm basically looking for games from Steam/Console/Portables that are also released on iOS.

Is there a website that keeps track of them?

    iOS Gaming no. 11: Grimvalor

    Posted: 20 Oct 2018 04:08 PM PDT

    Introduction

Good afternoon folks! This week, your guide Syger (That would be me) will take you deep into another edition of iOS Gaming, wherein we lean close, torch flickering, for a look at Grimvalor: A beautiful, wonderfully difficult action platformer. Stay close, keep your wits about you, and be careful! You never know what's just around the corner.

Before we delve in to the review proper, however, I would like to take a moment to thank the Direlight Studios for their generosity in sending me a review copy. Thank you, and thank you for delivering an excellent game.

Additionally, if you would like to read the previous review please click here. If you would like to yell at me for doing a terrible job (Or a great job! I won't judge you publicly) you can do that on the Trinity Force Network Discord server, by messaging me directly on Discord @Syger#2331, or on Reddit.

Lastly, readers would do well to note that there are minor spoilers throughout this review. If you would prefer to jump into the game without knowing anything, great! However, this isn't the review for you. With all that out of the way, let's look at Grimvalor!

    Details

    Game: Grimvalor

    Developer: Direlight Games

    Price: $6.99

    In-App Purchases: None!

    Device used: iPhone XS Max

    The Review

Whether it was the dim hallway and eerie soundtracks, or the devilish vampires and shambling monstrosities; Castlevania was a masterpiece of tone, music, and gameplay—a truly remarkable experience. What does this have to do with this week's game, you ask? Great question! Grimvalor hits many of the same notes: Unnerving atmosphere, eerie overtures, stumbling horrors—everything, in fact, save vampires.

Much like Castlevania, the best way to experience Grimvalor is to explore everything. Despite being fairly linear, there are many, many nooks and crannies which may hide anything from soul shards (a currency roughly comparable to experience) to new equipment or trinkets, and nevermind the most appealing discovery: Bonus boss fights! These gifts in disguise are heralded by thickening shadows, fresh monsters, and the ever ominous declaration: You are being Hunted.

Sometimes these diversions are too challenging or simply unreachable without better equipment, a higher level, or a new trinkets. If this should happen, worry not! Simply continue through the story and return later with new equipment, more experience, and more magical trinkets. Be careful, however: This is not a game where choices are made irrelevant with time. No, much like Dark Souls, stat allocation and equipment choice play a large role in determining how the game will be experienced: As a nimble duelist, dancing between opponents? Or perhaps a hardened butcher, cleaving apart fiendish fliers? Regardless, currency is limited and choices, once made, are not easily unmade—choose wisely.

Accentuating Grimvalor's dark atmosphere is a downright haunting score reminiscent of Blizzard's Diablo—though perhaps not quite as exceptional in a purely sonic experience. Whether or not it can stand alone, however, is irrelevant—as an atmospheric touch, in combination with visuals, the effect is superb: Eerie, abandoned, and definitely not a place to be caught alone at night.

Despite many merits, every diamond has flaws. For Grimvalor, it's the controls. While I can use them acceptably well, they are not as customisable (and thus flexible) as they could be. Yes, the horizontal and vertical positioning can be adjusted; and yes, the size can be adjusted. But a button's position in relation to its fellows? Cannot be adjusted. What if I would prefer to have attack/interact, jump, and roll/dash on the left instead of the right? That also cannot be adjusted. It's a minor quibble, I'll admit, but… it's something I would like to see.

On the whole, Grimvalor is a remarkable game. It's very challenging, but not impossible; dark and ominous, but not overbearing; mechanically deep, but not needlessly complicated. Despite minor issues with the control layout, I have no real complaints—sure, I'd like to see more bosses, more hidden areas, and a greater diversity in environmental mechanics; but that's just wishful thinking. Is this game, Grimvalor, worth the asking price? Yes, very much so. Would I recommend it to everyone? Probably not—but hey, it's only seven bucks.

    Conclusion

That, as I have heard it said, is a wrap! This was a particularly fun review to write—not in the least because I thoroughly enjoyed playing the game. Up next: I'm not sure. I've been playing this neat walking simulator called The Witness recently, and eyeing a very pretty puzzler called Valleys Between—what do you fine Readers think? Let me know on Reddit, or in the comments! Alternatively, you can find me on the Trinity Force Network Discord server @Syger#2331—mentioning me in the #general-gaming channel or messaging me directly are both acceptable.

Additionally, I would like to thank Direlight Studios for so generously allowing me the opportunity to review their game. It was a pleasure, and I look forward to their next publication.

As always, I'm looking for feedback! Love me, hate me, don't care—I can't change something if I don't know there's a problem. On that note, I shall take my leave until next time—adieu!

How many games do you actually complete?

    Posted: 20 Oct 2018 01:21 PM PDT

Of course, especially on mobile there are also a lot of 'endless'-style games. Still, there are also games with a number of levels or story-based. So, what would you say, how many of the games you download on mobile do you actually complete?

Games like Last Shelter and Rise of Civilization?

    Posted: 20 Oct 2018 04:09 PM PDT

I am playing both games and currently stuck at high level upgrades that last days to finish. Ergo, I am left with nothing to do but stare at the screen.

Can you recommend games like Last Shelter and Rise or Civilization for iOS? I seem to enjoy playing these sort of massively multiplayer city / character building and management and alliance games.

    Thanks!

New to Apple. What’s a good game with some complexity?

    Posted: 20 Oct 2018 09:57 PM PDT

Something addictive and has some complexity. I'm loving Civ 6 so far, but I fear it is putting too much strain on my phone. It doesn't have to be iOS exclusive, it can even be a port. Just want something good that'll keep me hooked for awhile.

Can you recommend any good tug of war games?

    Posted: 20 Oct 2018 12:54 PM PDT

I used to play tug of war games in Starcraft 2 on custom maps. I loved games like Desert Strike. And Clash Royale scratched a similar itch for me. I don't mind micro transactions as long as it's fair.

    Thanks!

Android starting to get games first because iOS doesn't have 32bit support.

    Posted: 20 Oct 2018 12:10 PM PDT

So, apparently Android is getting Neverwinter Nights: Enhanced Edition long before iOS will because they are going to have to rewrite large amounts of the code to get it to run in 64bit.

    https://forums.beamdog.com/discussion/71130/nwn-coming-to-android

Not only are we locked out of all of the amazing old 32bit iOS games that will never get an update, we also have to wait even longer to play some games because of Apple's brave decision to drop 32bit. Not the most recent news, but I was disappointed again to read this.
