Apple’s thought process in designing gesture based UI/UX

    Posted: 20 Oct 2018 08:18 AM PDT

It would be cool to have a FaceTime recorded greeting for when you miss a FaceTime call. You’d record a video ahead of time letting them know you’re not available at the moment, similar to a greeting for a missed call

Why does the App-store have no "wishlist" feature?

    Posted: 20 Oct 2018 02:36 AM PDT

So I am wondering why Apple has no wishlist feature in their iOS-Appstore like Steam has it for their games and also Amazon has it for all products? It would be nice to be able to wishlist an app I like, which I am not yet ready to buy and maybe get a notification/email when it's on sale (like every other major platform does...)

Why Apple doesn't implement this? Do they think people will stop buying apps instantly and wait for them to go on sale? My guess would be, that such a feature would just lead to more people buying apps, since the people who want an app, already buy in instantly and the indecisive users, they think they will buy it some day later, and then forget about the app they wanted completely.

Thank you Apple, for the silence.

    Posted: 20 Oct 2018 07:30 AM PDT

I am currently using a Macbook Pro 15 from 2010 that I bought used for 400 bucks in 2013. The laptop has been used by many people before me and I use it every day for various tasks and 99% of the time it still, 8 years after production, stays absolutely dead silent. I cant even hear if the thing is on. I even have a fan monitoring program installed and the fans are almost always idling at 2000 rpm each. I honestly find that incredible for such an old machine. Yeah its old and it doesn't have a Retina display. But its still an absolute silent beast. I installed an SSD as well to make the experience even better.

I have gone through several other PC laptops during the life span of this machine. All of them had had 1 fan and overheating issues with buzzing fans. All of them were more expensive than this Macbook was for me. So thank you apple, for already over 10 years ago understanding how to solve fan noise in laptops by placing dual fans and introducing one piece aluminium chassis. It worked wonders and you have made many people that demand absolute silence from their machines very happy.

How to make GIFs on iOS with Live Photos and Bursts – my first "Shortcuts in under 3 minutes" video

    Posted: 20 Oct 2018 12:20 PM PDT

Here's my latest video on making shortcuts with the Shortcuts app!

This is on making GIFs out of Live Photos, Bursts, and groups of photos – keeping it short & sweet to test out videos that are easier to produce.

Here's my whole channel, and I've made three others so far: - Shortcuts Explained! Did Siri actually get better? - Siri Shortcuts Basics: learning the Shortcuts app! - My TOP 10 Shortcuts! Built working at Apple

I used to work at Workflow, so I'm trying to share as much as possible – would love to hear what you all might want to see from my channel in the future!

What am I missing if I switch from Spotify to Apple Music?

    Posted: 20 Oct 2018 06:24 AM PDT

I tried Apple Music when it first came out. It was bad for several reasons. I'll list them here:

    • GUI unnecessarily complicated. That's just a matter of getting used to though, right?

    • lack of social features that have evolved in Spotify over the years. If I look for a music list called "sexy music that isn't too obvious" there is most likely such a list created by someone somewhere in the world.

    • a wide range of trending lists and top lists, based on various socioeconomic classes around the world. "Everyone" use Spotify (free or paid) which reflect those results. Only premium iPhone users use Apple Music. So a trending list in Apple Music is a trending list based on Apple users, not music listeners in general.

    • recommendations. Spotify works great. I choose a song, and it plays stuff I like after that. Apple Music didn't manage this at all in the beginning but perhaps it has gotten better?

What's your experience? And try to be honest. I have tons of Apple products and services, I'm in the eco system. I really like Apple. But I'm also not afraid of using other things if they're better.

Sent iPhone in for a “covered software issue” but ended up having to pay for a new phone due to cosmetic flaw?

    Posted: 20 Oct 2018 08:30 AM PDT

Daughters iPhone 7 developed some electronic problems, screen locked, turned off and just being a problem. She took it to an Apple store where they diagnosed it to be a software issue that is a "known recall" and can be repaired at no charge if the phone is sent in. She sent it in, only to get an email saying they found a chip on her camera glass and they were replacing the phone completely and she had to pay for the replacement. She didn't want the glass chip repaired, didn't want a new phone and told them this, but they said either you pay for the new phone or we send you your old one back without repairing it. I called to confirm this action. And they pointed out it's in the service contract, if any cosmetic flaws are found they will replace the phone completely and charge the customer, even if this is not needed or wanted. I had no idea about this "service contract" practice. Agreeing to have them steal from you, what a deal. Any ways around this?

    October event poster

    Posted: 20 Oct 2018 01:21 PM PDT

Hey everyone! I made a poster out of my favourite Apple logos from the October event invites. It took me 2+ hours because all of them are a bit different of course and it was a pain in the ass to align them by hand to make the grid look good.

You can check it out here: https://imgur.com/a/NRUEMba

And you can download it here in full resolution if you want to print one yourself: https://we.tl/t-9OyGE9G0x2

A beautiful mastodon app for iOS is now here

    Posted: 20 Oct 2018 02:24 PM PDT

    Hey reddit!

I've been working on making an iOS Mastodon app that focuses on iOS design guidelines and is a joy to use for the past month and am excited to finally release it! :)

It's very heavily iOS-centric and Apple-esque with 3D Touch, Share and Today Extensions, Siri Shortcuts, iMessage Stickers, and a Watch app. It has gorgeous theme and customisation options, along with so much more!

You can get it over at: https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/mast/id1437429129?mt=8

    Here's a summary of the app's features:

    • Beautiful and clean interface
    • Fast and lightweight
    • Light mode, dark mode, and true black dark mode (you could even set up Siri Shortcuts to do this for you magically)
    • Themes and customisation
    • Supercharged toot composition screen with a powerful media gallery, text styling options, ASCII text face insertion, now playing content insertion, and user autocomplete
    • Powerful media app-drawer with a gallery slider, and drag-and-drop deletion
    • Supercharged media viewer and Picture-in-Picture videos that can be dragged around
    • Swipe actions to like/boost/reply (swipe right)
    • Swipe actions to mute/block/report/translate/share (swipe left)
    • Translate toots
    • Threaded toot conversations
    • Notifications and activity
    • List creation support
    • View pinned and liked toots
    • View muted and blocked users
    • Gorgeous profiles with links
    • Dynamic hashtags, related, and user search
    • Adjustable segments
    • Instance emoticons display and composition support
    • Account locking and follower requests
    • Customisable gestures
    • 3D Touch Peek and Pop
    • 3D Touch Quick Actions
    • Today Extension
    • Share Extensions for Photos and Safari
    • Siri Shortcuts
    • Watch app with timelines and profile, works over cellular
    • Cute iMessage stickers
    • Joyful haptics and alerts
    • Real time streaming
    • Push notifications
    • Subtle volume indicator
    • Dynamic app icon changing
    • Useful settings to customise as you see fit

    Thank you for your time!

Why does everyone rave about fantastical?

    Posted: 20 Oct 2018 08:46 AM PDT

Can anyone explain why this app is superior than the stock calendar app and why it's worth the money?

EDIT: I'm mainly referring to the Mac app since it's so heavily priced.
