Full screen Siri, especially on iPads, is the dumbest thing ever.

Just transferred a 9 GB folder from my iPad to iPhone with AirDrop

    Posted: 14 Oct 2018 06:43 AM PDT

I didn't expect it would work to be honest. No need to use cables, computer, or cloud services. It took about 5 minutes or less, such an awesome feature.

A live FaceTime photo has been my saving grace.

    Posted: 14 Oct 2018 09:20 AM PDT

Do you think they will bring that back?

My Gramma passed away late March. I've got this live FaceTime photo that my youngest took and it's the only recent thing I have of her voice and beautiful smile and giggle. It helps get me through some days and my kids even absolutely love it.

They need to bring that feature back for sure.

    Sorry I am mobile!!!

Feature request: scan documents into “Files” on iOS

    Posted: 14 Oct 2018 03:47 PM PDT

I've scanned documents with my iPhone camera even when only clunky third party apps offered the feature, and I was happy when Apple put the scanning feature into Notes, but it's really hard to organize lots of scanned documents within the notes app.

Now I LOVE that Mojave has the option to import scans from iPhone, but why not skip the Mac and just allow users to scan documents directly into the Files app? I would use the shit out of a feature like that. Recently bought a house so I have tons of documents to organize and scan. Plus, my workplace uses Box for file sharing, and Files allows for Box integration. I would be able to quickly scan documents into my Box account directly from iOS.

PLEASE APPLE IT WOULD BE SO EASY

Playstation Vue added to Apple TV app.

    Posted: 14 Oct 2018 09:02 PM PDT

You can now view on demand content and launch PlayStation vue from the Apple TV app. Neat, works like Hulu with cable does, it just shows you that the connected content service can watch the show or movie on demand.

One key difference it seems is how it interacts with up next. Vue adds the show to up next as soon as it's airing live. You click on the show in the Apple TV app and you drop in at the live moment that is being broadcast. If you want to watch from the beginning you go into the vue menu and select the on demand version of the show.

Really smooth. Maybe this means Apple will soon let cable services show when content is being shown live. Promising features for sure.

AppleCare+ Theft & Loss vs Carrier AppleCare Services Agreements

    Posted: 14 Oct 2018 10:33 AM PDT

Today, I thought I would break down the differences between getting AppleCare+ Theft & Loss (I'll refer to it as AC+ T&L from now on) and Cellular Carrier AppleCare Services Agreements (referred to as ACS from now on) and the protection plans from the other two top carriers that do not offer ACS agreements.

Orginally, Apple only offered AppleCare+ (AC+) and if you had your device stolen or lost it, you would need to buy a new iPhone. Carriers decided to bundle AC+ with various services including loss and theft protection for an additional fee. One of the best benefits was the fact you could pay monthly instead of an upfront payment to Apple. However, on September 12, Apple announced AC+ T&L as well as a monthly payment option for both AC+ and the T&L version. Doing so allows customers greater freedom in choice.

    Assumptions:

I will be assuming in this review that we are looking at an iPhone Xs 64GB and valuing it at the current unlocked cost ($999 USD not including tax.) Prices will be different and the value will be different depending on which device you choose. I also will assume that you plan to stick with your carrier and not switch. If you were to switch, I believe buying AC+ T&L through Apple is automatically a better option as it stays with the device even if you change carriers. This comparison does not look at the value of the AC+/AC+ T&L agreements that come with the iPhone Upgrade Program. I will also only be looking at the 4 major carriers even though only two of them (T-Mobile and Sprint) offer ACS agreements.

    When Can You Buy It:

    Plan Days to Buy It
AC+ 60 Days from Purchase Date
Verizon TMP 30 Days from Purchase Date or open enrollment period
AT&T MPP 30 Days from Activation Date
Sprint (Complete) 30 Days from Activation or Upgrade Date
T-Mobile Protection 360 30 Days from Activation Date

    Cost:

Plan Initial Cost Monthly Cost Total Cost (over 24 months)
    AC+ T&L non monthly* $299 + tax N/A $299
    AC+ T&L monthly* N/A $14.99 $359.76
    Verizon TMP N/A $13 $312
    AT&T MPP N/A $11.99 $287.76
    Sprint (Complete)* N/A $19 $456
    T-Mobile Protection 360* N/A $15 $360

    \Includes AppleCare+)

In this initial price comparison, the AT&T option is the lowest cost over 24 months but Apple's one time charge of AC+ T&L is the cheapest plan that includes AC+. Of course, the cost of the program itself is not nearly as important as the cost when something goes wrong.

    Damage Deductions:

Plan Screen Repair Other Damage Number of Available Incidents (in 24 months)
    AC+ * $29 $99 2
    Verizon TMP** $29 $199 3
    AT&T MPP $49 $149-299*** 4
    Sprint (Complete)**** N/A $140 (repair) $275 (replace) 4
    T-Mobile Protection 360**** $99 $99 6

\The two incidents include your lost or stolen device incidents and are not separate damage only incidents.)

\*I called Verizon due to their deductibles being hard to find and the representative confirmed it is $29 for screen repairs and $199 for other damage. If this is incorrect, please let me know.)

\**AT&T charges $299 normally, if you haven't had a claim in 6 months, you are charged $224, if you haven't had a claim in 12 months it is $149)

\***Includes AppleCare+ so costs shown reflect after the two incidents of AC+ have been used. The number of incidents shown, do not include the two from AC+.)

This next table calculates the cost of the program with one screen repair and one other damage claim. Note, regular AC+ is cheaper than AC+ T&L and would include the same screen repair/accidental damage costs.

Plan Plan Cost (24 months) Deduction Cost Total Cost
    AC+ T&L non monthly $299 $128 $427
    AC+ T&L monthly 359.76 $128 $487.76
    Verizon TMP $312 $228 $540
    AT&T MPP* $287.76 $348 $635.76
    Sprint (Complete)** $456 $280*** $736
    T-Mobile Protection 360** $360 $198 $558

\This is assuming you did not get the lower cost for the ATT deduction based on length since last claim.)

\*This is assuming you already used your 2 incidents from AC+ but does not calculate the cost of those into the plan.)

\**Based on the repair and not replace cost that Sprint advertises.)

While AppleCare+ proves the be the best value, I believe if you think you will damage your phone more than twice over the life of the phone, the ACS agreements may be a better option. You will get the same deductions as AC+ and have additional ones available at a higher cost.

I would not buy the protection plans that do not include AppleCare, especially from AT&T unless you believe you will qualify for the reduced deductions.

    Lost or Stolen Deductions:

We never want to see our devices lost or stolen but in the rare event that it does happen, here is what it will cost you.

Plan Lost/Stolen Number of Available Incidents (in 24 months)
    AC+ T&L $269 2*
    Verizon TMP $199 3
    AT&T MPP $299/$224/$149** 4
    Sprint (Complete) $275 4
    T-Mobile Protection 360 $249 6

\Includes the two screen repair/accidental damage claims.)

\*$299 is the standard deductible, $224 is if you haven't had a claim in 6 months, $149 is if you haven't had a claim in 12 months.)

This table is the cost of the plan and deduction vs the cost of the phone when you bought it (Assuming iPhone Xs 64GB at $999 USD)

Plan Plan and Deducible Cost Cost of Device
    AC+ T&L non monthly $568 $999
    AC+ T&L monthly $628.76 $999
    Verizon TMP $511 $999
    AT&T MPP $586.76* $999
    Sprint (Complete) $731 $999
    T-Mobile Protection 360 $609 $999

\Calculated with the normal deductible of $299.)

Verizon is the clear winner here.

    Additional Benefits:

AppleCare+ includes replacement of any accessories that came with your iPhone for free for the life of the agreement (2 years) and 2 years of phone support from AppleCare Technical Support.

Verizon Total Mobile Protection includes Tech Coach support.

AT&T Mobile Protection Pack includes unlimited technical support, self help tips on your device, 50GB of secured storage through their app.

Sprint Complete includes replacement of any accessories that came with your iPhone for free while you have the ACS agreement active. It also comes with the 2 years of AppleCare Technical Support. Sprint includes unlimited cloud storage for photos and videos, online password manage tools, and "Tech Experts."

T-Mobile Protection 360 includes replacement of any accessories that came with your iPhone for free while you have the ACS agreement active. It also comes with the 2 years of AppleCare Technical Support. Tech PHD, McAfee Security, and unlimited screen protector replacements are additional benefits T-Mobile provides.

    Final Assessment:

While the carrier options can be more affordable in certain situations, I will continue to purchase AppleCare+ from Apple for my devices. Also, if you didn't know, Apple will issue a prorated refund for the remaining AppleCare+/T&L on your device.

Do you have True Tone turned on?

    Posted: 14 Oct 2018 10:22 AM PDT

Personally I do not on my iPhone Xs.

I find that it turns the screen too yellow, and can't get used to it, so I have it off.

What about you guys? And on what device?

iPhone Xs - Apple Photos app vs Google Photos app, displayed photos quality

    Posted: 14 Oct 2018 06:32 PM PDT

I do not believe the Google Photos app properly renders photos taken on the iPhone Xs. On device (local) photos that were taken with an iPhone Xs that are viewed in the Google Photos app look dramatically worse (blurrier, muted colors) than when viewing the same photos in Apple's Photos app. The photos were saved in the HEIF format.

    Has anyone else noticed this?

Note, there are no noticeable differences when viewing JPG photos between the apps.

EDIT: Screenshots from each app. Only pic I had on my new iPhone Xs Max that doesn't have faces.

With the rumors of how big of a change iOS12 was supposed to be, what are you expecting out of iOS13?

There were rumors that 12 was supposed to have some big changes and some sort of redesign. But this was pushed back because of iOS11. What are you expecting and hoping for out of iOS13?

If I unsubscribe from Apple Music, then resubscribe, will I lose my playlists?

    Posted: 14 Oct 2018 04:45 PM PDT

Hello there, so I've been using Apple Music for around a year or so now, and I've built up a couple playlists totaling to just over 1000 songs. I recently switched phone carriers and was able to get 6 months free. However, I have to cancel my subscription first in order to get it.

Will my playlists come over if cancel then get it again? If not, is there any way I can "backup" all of my songs to an app or anything?

Siri tip: In Accessibility settings you can enable "Type to Siri" if you'd rather type your question to Siri. This feature is available on both iOS and MacOS.

I was pleased to find this hidden feature since I'd like to use Siri more but I don't like others overhearing my requests.

[Question] Anyone else’s iPhone X feel laggy on the lock screen?

    Posted: 14 Oct 2018 03:38 PM PDT

Ever since I upgraded to 12.1 whenever I unlock my X and go to scroll through notifications there's a huge delay or it barely registers my motion. Also when I swipe up to unlock there is a delay from when I swipe to it actually going up. Touch recognition is great once phone is unlocked. This only happens on the lock screen.

Mom's Phone got Stolen and then Screen Smashed

    Posted: 14 Oct 2018 06:56 PM PDT

Hey guys, long story short, my mom got her phone stolen today and it got smashed. She confronted the mother and her family for taking her phone and hiding it and then threatening them that she had their license plate etc. I guess they got scared and then decided to smash it and left it on the floor. I found it by using FindMyIPhone. My mother has information on the phone like in the notes app, emails, etc. how can I access and extract it without using the screen? Thank you.

Repurpose old MacBook Pro (Non-Retina) Into Home Server?

    Posted: 14 Oct 2018 08:27 AM PDT

    Hello Everyone,

I've got a 2010 MacBook Pro (non-Retina) that I've been thinking about turning into a home server. I had a few questions around this:

    1. Is this a dumb idea? It's an old machine, and just sitting in a closet collecting dust at the moment.

    2. I'm fine with NOT using MacOS and throwing on a lighter Linux distro on there to do the server duties. Any recommendations?

    3. Anything else I should keep in mind? I'm not trying to do anything crazy with my server needs. Basic file storage (pictures, videos, etc.) sync'ing calendar + contacts.

    4. I think my MacBook will still shut itself off if the lid closes then. Any idea for how to get around that? (Maybe Linux has better control for this vs. MacOS?)

Thanks in advance for everyone's time and help, it is super appreciated!

    Maps walking directions

    Posted: 15 Oct 2018 01:20 AM PDT

I like it a lot when walking directions are shown on the lock screen!! But there are couple of issues which bother me so much I want to share them:

    • Trying to unlock the iPhone when walking directions are displayed is much much slower: Face ID on iPhone X isn't triggered by raise to wake so when I swipe up it reacts as it is wrong password/Face scan, it tries to scan and then when unlocked it.... closes any App that was active and opens the home screen!! It seems they never actually tried to use it.
    • When there's walking part in the transport directions it isn't displayed on the lock screen anymore neither I got direction help on Apple Watch. That's why sometimes I rebuild the route with the walking option.

What are your thoughts? Does someone have the same experience?

P.S. I submitted feedback to Apple but not sure they read it =(
