Genius Lyrics Are Now Available in Apple Music

(A long shot but...) would anyone else be interested in seeing an Apple-curated wallpaper app built into iOS?

    Posted: 11 Oct 2018 10:11 PM PDT

With every release of iOS, Apple for some reason, removes perfectly good and quite stellar wallpapers from the systems OS. RIP Live wallpaper fish.

We could see things like "shot on iPhone" wallpapers. Apple-made Live wallpapers. Apple panoramics. Apple aerials. Abstract and of course, vintage wallpapers from earlier iOS releases. I'd even be interested to see Apple pay local/indie artists to have their art on billions of devices around the world.

It would be it's own stand-alone app that can be deleted if the user wanted to do so. It would have iCloud integration so all your devices can share the same wallpaper.

Is this something that interests people or am I just a dreamer?

What are some of Apples patents that were in the public eye that eventually became a reality?

    Posted: 11 Oct 2018 04:19 PM PDT

I feel as though I always see patents claimed by Apple, but have a hard time remembering the related parent when new things get released.

Munich Court Throws out Qualcomm Patent Infringement Lawsuit against Apple

Well, I guess I made the leap to Apple.

    Posted: 11 Oct 2018 08:04 PM PDT

So, I've almost always been an Android guy, but I've been flirting with Apple for about a year now. It started with an iPad Pro that I leased in February to take notes for work. It was fantastic.

I lease my phones from T-Mobile, so I turned in my Galaxy S9+ and got an iPhone X in May to compliment the iPad. Around the same time, I got an Apple Watch Series 1 for myself and my wife.

But I found the iPhone X to be too small, but I loved the OLED screen. I returned it and went back to the S9+ and returned the Apple Watch.

At the time, these were my main concerns:

    1. Siri is just not good.
    2. Apple Maps for CarPlay is just not good.
    3. Password management between iOS and Windows is bad.
    4. Notifications are bad.

So, some time passes. In August, I start a new job, and it's made pretty clear that IT only wants people to have iPhones. So I get another iPhone X. I get into the iOS 12 beta. Oh hey, almost all of the issues from above are fixed/will be fixed. Siri is still bad, but that's okay I suppose.

But then I run back into the issue of password management. I don't like 1Password or LastPass, but I don't have a Mac, so I can't use iCloud Keychain. It's so frustrating that I return the phone and get a Note 9.

Then I missed my Apple Watch a lot, so I order a Galaxy Watch. It's just... not good at all. It does a lot of stuff 75% well. And for some reason having it connected just killed my Note 9 battery life. Back to the drawing board.

I decided to take the leap. Today, I ordered:

    1. iPhone Xs Max
    2. AirPods
    3. Apple Watch Series 4
    4. A used MacBook Pro 2015 (Swappa)

The MacBook is going to be my main computer. I even sold my Surface Book that I had and made a little extra cash on the side.

Now, I just gotta wait for AirPower to get here and my Apple life will be complete!

True Tone on the 2018 MacBooks is an extremely underrated feature

    Posted: 11 Oct 2018 09:59 AM PDT

I've had an iPhone X for a year now - a device that also has true tone capability - but I never really appreciated true tone until I got a new MacBook this year.

It makes viewing the screen for long periods of time so much more pleasant and easier on the eyes (in a way there merely controlling the screen brightness can't replicate).

It's far better than Night Shift, which makes the colors look terrible and unnatural, and needs to be scheduled or manually turned on/off, unlike true tone which is automatic.

I think True Tone is low-key a killer feature of Apple's newer devices, and I've really come to appreciate it now that I've seen how effective it is on the bigger screens. Combined with Mojave's Dark Mode, a long day and night spent on the computer feels so much more pleasant now.

Anyone know a fairly accurate scale that automatically syncs data to Apple Health app?

    Posted: 11 Oct 2018 05:24 PM PDT

I don't mind downloading apps to operate the smart scales but I like to use Apple's health app to track my progress and I can manually enter the data if I want to, I just think it would be easier if it would do it for me. Thanks!

Is Apple's True Tone helping to prevent burn in on OLED displays?

    Posted: 11 Oct 2018 09:08 AM PDT

I haven't found anything that indicates a direct relation, but could True Tone (at least in part) be one of Apple's ways to try and prevent burn in on their OLED displays?

As I understand it, burn in occurs when a certain area is constantly displaying the same icon, UI element, etc. True Tone will adjust the color temperature (and thus shift the color that's displayed) every so often depending on the environment, preventing that a certain area is actually showing the exact same thing (in terms of coloration). So, at least in theory, this could mean that in addition to making the screen a little easier on the eyes, True Tone also helps against burn in.

Granted, I'm not familiar with the technical details and unsure whether or not the shift in color would actually be sufficient to prevent burn in. What do you guys think?

Call screening would be nice, scam detection could be even better

    Posted: 12 Oct 2018 01:15 AM PDT

We've all heard stories about people who were scammed into disclosing sensitive information like passwords, PINs and 2FA confirmation codes, or duped into buying some overpriced fake antivirus software, over the phone by sketchy call center operators.

I would like the option for Siri (or Google's Duplex, really, this is platform-agnostic) to monitor ongoing calls and recognize scam patterns in the conversation. She could even stop me when she hears me say the first digits of my passcode or the first characters of my password, etc. to notify me that that might not be a good idea. This feature could only be active for phone numbers not in your contacts or 1-800 numbers or international numbers.

I often see banks and other companies handling money and/or sensitive information trying very hard to raise awareness of scams. I suspect it's not working very well because they do it regularly and keep finding new places to put the warnings in—login pages, app tutorials, company news, direct emailing to users etc. People are still getting scammed.

I think they just don't understand the risks or don't have the critical thinking capability to distinguish between legitimate calls and scams. That's where tech companies could, I think, step in and help. The hardware/software is there, it's ready, it just isn't used for this case yet.

If the call analysis is done on device, there's no privacy issue either. Why would people care if the CPU in their phone wasn't just passing the sound from the microphone to the modem but also running some kind of analysis on it only to be thrown away after the call ends. What do you think?
