Feature Request | Apple TV Night Shift

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 08:33 PM PST

Does anyone else like to fall asleep with the TV on? I find myself using different display profiles on my TV for night time. Usually something with a lower brightness setting and a warm color temperature. Would it be possible for my Apple TV to do something similar for me? Would anyone else like to have a Night Shift option added in tvOS?

    All apps play in Stereo?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 07:06 PM PST

ATV 4K to a Denon receiver, which can handle Dolby Digital +

I use the Channels app to stream OTA channels, directvNow, and Netflix and so far everything has just been playing in stereo.

I even played a handful of trailers from the Apple Trailers app and still just stereo.

Am I missing a setting, or is nothing streaming with Dolby 5.1?

Favorite app/method to track your shows

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 04:42 PM PST

Very recent cordcutter and am curious what everyone's favorite app is to track their favorite shows?

Before I cut the cord, I just set the DVR to record any new eps of a show and that's how I tracked it.

Not sure how best to track with Apple TV.

Denon Receiving, Samsung TV, and HDMI-CEC Woes

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 04:02 PM PST

    Here is the setup:

ATV 4k HDR connects to Denon AVR-E300 receiver. The receiver acts as the "hub" for various devices and then it's "monitor output" is to a Samsung tv. Because the Denon handles the device switching, the tv always stays on HDMI 1.

Both the Denon and the Samsung support HDMI-CEC. I have just upgraded firmware on both devices, so they are current.

Here is what happens, starting with all devices in a powered-off state.

I press the Menu button the Apple remote. ATV wakes up. Denon Receiver turns on and switches to appropriate input. Samsung TV turns on and is on appropriate HDMI 1 input. Apple TV displays on the screen and I can move around. For roughly 1 minute. And then the Samsung screen goes black. I then wait another minute or two, push the Menu button on the Apple remote two times, and then the Samsung acts like it just received its "wake up" signal and it comes back online. After that, it works great.

    Powering off also works great.

Samsung's HDMI Settings: Anynet+: On Auto Turn Off: Yes Receiver: On

Denon's HDMI Setting: HDMI Control: On - Pass Source: TV <-- note this is the input for the AppleTV - Pow. Off Control: All

I have tried to understand what Pass Source does on the Denon and can't find much. If I change Pass Source to "Last" the Samsung says it is searching for signal, though it is correctly set on HDMI 1.

When the TV blanks out, it appears to still be communicating with the Denon as I can bring up and see the Denon configuration menu.

I just don't understand why the TV blanks out

Apple TV 4k continuously buffering movies played from NAS over network on VLC and Infuse, what can I do to fix this?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 07:43 PM PST

This is extremely frustrating and seems to only be an issue with the Apple TV itself.

I can stream content from my NAS perfectly fine on any other computer or my iphone, so why can't the Apple TV do it?

Sony HTCT800 soundbar 4K HDR passthrough problem

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 04:41 PM PST

    Hi everybody,

I'm having a peculiar problem that so far I haven't been able to find a solution to, despite constant googling and calling Sony support.

I recently bought a new setup for my living room with the following components: Sony XBR65X900E TV Sony HTCT800 soundbar Apple TV 4K PS4 Pro All HDMI cables are premium high speed cables

The soundbar is connected to the TV via HDMI and in plugged into HDMI 3(ARC) on the TV and HDMI out on the soundbar. My cable box is input into HDMI 1 on the soundbar, Apple TV 4K plugged into HDMI 2 on the soundbar, and PS4 Pro plugged into HDMI 3 on the soundbar.

All firmware on all devices are up to date, the inputs on the TV are set to 'enhanced' and the inputs on the soundbar are also set to 'enhanced'.

My issue I believe stems from when the Apple TV is set to 'Chroma 4:2:2' and when the PS4 is set to '2160p RGB' or 'automatic'. When the devices are set to these settings I get a consistent flickering black or static screen. Sound seems to come through fine but the flickering is very pronounced and unwatchable/playable. When I set the Apple TV 4:2:0 it's fine but I understand this setting is inferior. When I set the PS4 to '2160p YUV420' it's also fine, but I understand this setting is also inferior. When I plug the Apple TV and PS4 directly into the TV and use the 'better' settings there is no issue either so it seems, at least so far, that's it's a problem with the soundbar.

I haven't exchanged the unit so far as I'm hoping there is something I can tweak. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Can Sign-In, But Cannot Watch ESPN

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 06:19 PM PST

I'm logged into ESPN with my tv provider and it's confirmed by showing up in the settings section.

However, every ESPN channel I click on says "not part of my tv providers package" and I cannot watch live tv - the kicker is I'm logged into my iPhone, iPad and FireTV and all of those still work fine.

Is this just a AppleTV 4K problem? This sucks.

Help signing in with new login

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 09:35 AM PST

So I need to sign in using a different login with the same provider and it keeps signing up automatically to the incorrect one.

I signed out the tv provider on both the Apple TV and iPhone, but when I try to activate a channel app, this error occurs.

Question about sound settings and refresh rate

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 05:26 AM PST

I have two questions regarding sound settings and refresh rate:

    1. My Sony AVR supports DD+ but has issues with it. My FireTV has a setting for DD over HDMI which allows me to enjoy Netflix and Amazon Prime with 5.1 but DD instead of DD+. Can I do the same with the Apple TV?

    2. I have heard that at least the newer Apple TV 4k supports automatic refresh rate switching but you can only set it for 4k and not 1080p? Is that true? I currently have a 1080p TV but will get a 4k eventually. Would I be able to use the automatic refresh rate switching (24p content for Netflix etc and 60 Hz for sports) without changing it manually on 1080p? And if so, does this only work on the Apple TV 4k or also on the smaller one?

    Thank you!

    Realization and Question

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 11:09 AM PST

Had just been fiddling around with my new set up (Sony XBR900e).

Was trying different streaming services all with a free trial to get a feel for which was best. Sports on all of them seemed a little laggy, even coming in at 60fps. Internet is running at 175MBPS download speeds and Apple TV is connected via Ethernet so I knew it wasn't my internet connection.

Couldn't figure out the issue as I had the apple TV on the default best video setting. Went back in and realized that the top of the list is 4k HDR @ 50Hz. Adjusted this to 4k HDR @ 60 Hz and made the world of difference. Everything is very smooth now. Why wouldn't they make 60Hz the default setting? Especially with a good amount of people using AppleTV to stream live TV. Seems strange to me.
