Macbook 2017 has never had good battery life

    Posted: 01 Feb 2018 09:55 PM PST

I was very generously gifted a 2017 MacBook (512gb, 16gb ram, "i7") in August. I never thought the battery was very good (I have two laptops - the other is a non-touch Dell XPS 13 2016 which has an insane battery and easily gets 12 hours). I don't think my expectations for this MacBook are so unreasonable though, Apple states that the MacBook should get 10-11 hours of battery life so I was expecting maybe 8 on average... The battery on this MacBook has never gotten eight hours, now I'm thinking there might be something wrong with it. I never have it above half brightness (personal preference, not a battery saving thing), I mostly use it for school - Microsoft Word, Web Browsing etc. I rarely use it for media consumption. I do have dropbox which probably does not help. It usually gets about 5 hours of battery life or fewer on a full charge. Right now it has 41% battery and it estimates that will get me 2 hours and 21 minutes. Is this normal? Is there anything I can do to improve the battery? Thanks!

Upgrade from 2013 MacBook Air to 2016 MacBook?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2018 08:10 AM PST

Currently working with a mid-2013 13" MacBook Air and considering upgrading to the 2016 12" Macbook 1.1GHz Dual-core Intel Core m3 (refurbished from Apple): https://www.apple.com/shop/product/FMGL2LL/A/Refurbished-12-inch-MacBook-11GHz-Dual-core-Intel-Core-m3-Space-Gray

I'm about to start a master's degree in business analytics that will include some programming using Python and R. Would upgrading to the 2016 Macbook give a substantial performance boost?

    macbook vs pro fan noise

    Posted: 01 Feb 2018 04:40 PM PST

Trying to decide between a fanless macbook and a macbook pro. The only thing that puts the macbook ahead is that there is no annoying fan noise. But the thought occurs to me, will I hear fan noise from the pro if I'm just typing in a terminal and reading pdfs, meaning for light use, macbook and pro are just as silent? Thanks

Does Apple still offer Anti-Glare replacement for free?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2018 03:41 AM PST

Is someone with experience getting trying for the repair let me know if they'll still offer it as a free repair on a Mid-2014 13" MacBook Pro.

I do not have the original receipt as it was a hand me down, but I have pretty bad anti-glare ware across the whole screen.

Last article I could find was from Feb last year (https://www.macrumors.com/2017/02/24/apple-extended-anti-reflective-repair-program/) So I'm not sure if its still something they'll offer?

    Cheers Folks.

    Macbook Pro 2018

Do you think the next update in macbook lineup will feature 15' with vega m? That would be sick, definitely would make me upgrade my 2017 13'' non touchbar. There is no news tho. I came cross some news about apple and intel collaboration but idk what its all about, I hope its about 12'' only.

    Performance question: 2017 MacBook Pro 13” 3.1GHz 16GB RAM vs. 2012 iMac 2.9GHz 16GB RAM

    Posted: 01 Feb 2018 01:10 AM PST

I'm in this situation where my job may switch from office-based to work from home. My work computer is a windows laptop with DisplayPort out.

At home I have a late 2012 iMac that I expect won't work as an external display for work laptop. I also don't have space for an additional monitor.

So I'm considering replacing iMac with a 2017 MacBook Pro 13" and a 24" display, but am wondering if it makes sense at all... after all it's switching from 4-core to 2-core i5 processor, and I doubt newer cpu generation + 200 MHz makes up for losing 2 cores.

I'm using iMac for photo post-processing with Lightroom, and iMovie+Handbrake for movie encoding.

Should I expect any performance gains on 2017 MacBook Pro compared to 2012 iMac?
