1TB Internal SSD for 2015 Macbook Pro?

    Posted: 24 Jan 2018 06:56 PM PST

Hey, so title says it all. I have a 2015 Macbook Pro and I'm looking to upgrade by internal storage to 1TB vs the 128 GB I have now. I've used an external before but just found it to be way to inconvenient especially when I like to split my hard drive between MacOS and Windows 10. Any options around the $300 mark? Thanks!

Is there input lag on the 2017 MBP non-touch bar when using a USB-C to HDMI adapter on a 1080p monitor?

    MacBook Pro 2017 Cases

    Posted: 24 Jan 2018 04:37 PM PST

Hey everybody, I have a 15 inch, 2017 MacBook Pro that I'm looking to purchase a quality case for. I am heading to college this fall and I am wondering what case (or even a sleeve) would work best for college, keeping it primarily in dorm or in my backpack. I want to keep my laptop minimal and somewhat retain its sleek design. Any help or links would be great, thank you!

P.S. any personal experience on cases and such throughout college or work would be great too!

I'm already looking into external graphics cards for my MacBook, but I'm wondering what else I can buy or do to make it more suitable for gaming.

Macbook 12 - 2017 - After Upgrade to High Sierra Low SSD Read Speeds?

    Posted: 24 Jan 2018 12:28 PM PST

Hi, i have upgraded my Macbook 12 from 2017 yesterday from Sierra to High Sierra 10.13.3. I have used a clean installation and reformatted the SSD to APFS with encryption. Now I have discovered low read Speeds with my SSD, write Speeds are finde. Has anyone discovered the same ? Is my Macbook SSD broken? What can I do about it, with Sierra Read and Write was fine.

Late 2016 MBP With Touchbar LCD Broken?

    Posted: 24 Jan 2018 03:54 PM PST

Hi guys first time poster and I tragically opened my MacBook when I got to work and noticed that the lcd was not working and appeared broken. There is no actual crack in the glass and nothing happened on my way to work. I noticed that there is a noticeable rattle when tilting the machine from side to side that seems to be coming from the display. Could this rattle that I have heard about in other computers be the reason for my broken lcd?

    sounds just like this

Hey everyone! Looking to upgrade my late-2008 MBP but hesitant to pull the trigger...

    Posted: 24 Jan 2018 02:31 PM PST

because the last update was waaay (lol) back in June 2017. I can still get by with this computer for another few months - or hell, probably through the end of the year if I really needed to. I'm very interested in getting a new 15" though because the limitations of my current one are showing. I'm not someone who needs the latest and greatest tech all the time but I'm worried the next generation may be coming this summer and may include significant improvements.

I know (think?) this is largely a guessing game but are we expecting a 2018 MBP with significant improvements (way faster processor, 32gb ram, etc)? or will we get another minor bump like we did last summer? If it's the latter I don't see the need to wait, but if it's the former then I'll continue making do. I want this next one to last 10 years so having 32gb and a big jump in processing power would help that.

Worth Upgrading RAM, SSD on a REALLY old macbook?

    Posted: 24 Jan 2018 06:39 AM PST

    Hey all -

I've been doing some spring cleaning and would like some help figuring out what do with this old macbook.

Basic Specs: Late 2008 unibody, 2.0 core 2 duo, 2GB RAM, non SSD HDD.

Its pretty inexpensive to upgrade the ram to 4 (max) and to an SSD (about $150), but is it going to do much? I use it for web browsing, watching movies/netflix on a monitor, and office -- nothing too crazy. Is it going to run pretty well? Right now it's pretty brutal, and I'm trying to decide if its worth saving to keep stationary at my desk at home, or should I recycle?

    Thanks for all your help!

3D design: how to organize hardware for optimal performance

    Posted: 24 Jan 2018 01:55 AM PST

I'm a student beginning in 3D design and animation. I intend to use my Macbook pro for the purpose because I can't afford another (or better) piece of tech right now.

I'm posting here because a lot of 3D design related posts and hardware questions come from this subreddit.

My concern after a lot of build-up from the instructor and word of mouth is that I am eventually going to run into problems doing 3D rendering on Mac. I am trying to alleviate the concern telling myself I'm just a beginner and that I will not get into polygon-crunching work because I don't want to design like that. I am telling myself cel-shading among other aesthetic tricks will help me output work in the mid-term that satisfies my own (game) design expectations.

    • Macbook Pro is 15" inch mid-2012 build with:
    • 2.6 Ghz Intel Core i7
    • 8GB RAM

Unless I sound like a fish out of water the above are, respectively, GPU and CPU specs.

    Short term solutions:

    • Bought a 500GB SSD
    • Offload 250GB data clutter into 2TB + 500 GB external drives (non-SSD)
    • Upgrade RAM to 16GB

    Mid to long-term goals:

    • Work on Maya with reasonable output or rendering performances (I have heard things like 6 minute animation files taking hours to render and worth hundreds of GB per file).
    • Learn how to best take advantage of this SSD storage system (I am guessing it must have a better use than just being a static storage system: how do I best use the SSD to reduce demands from my Mac while I am designing on Maya)

The objective is to figure out a sustainable way to use my hardware and get the best out of 3D design and rendering on it. I know this may not be very concrete but any kind of initial advice will help as I am not the most tech-savvy.

One of the glaring things I've noticed is that there doesn't seem to be much info about processors relative to 3D production. If there is, I may not be seeing it. I am sure that GPU (equals processor? equals graphics card?) has lots to do with design and rendering. Maybe more to do than CPU and RAM.

I keep asking myself vaguely "are 2.6GHz remotely enough to do what I want as a beginner and eventually intermediate?" without being sure how pertinent the question is.

I would rather not upgrade to a new MBP. I am sure there is a way to make the most of what I have except I don't know how to best make use of my "build" so to speak.

How much battery cycles do you have on your macbook?

    Posted: 24 Jan 2018 04:59 AM PST

Hello, today I found I have 241 battery cycles on my Macbook Pro 2016 with TB, I am using it from December 2016 (1year 1 month). I am curious if 241 cycles are normal, bellow or above average for one year of use. How many battery cycles do you have?
