Can we get a “Close all tabs” option? I’m surprised this isn’t a feature already.

How accurate is the wide blue circle in find my iPhone/location services?

    Posted: 08 Feb 2022 06:51 AM PST

I am talking about the transparent overlay that changes size depending on the signal's supposed accuracy. I understand that it is an estimated accuracy and that varies with signal strength.

Is there someone here with the technical knowledge to share with me if the location is certainly within that blue area? Is it ever possible that the actual location can be outside that radius?

I know our technology is pretty amazing, but is it completely reliable?

    Thanks.

Upgrading from iphone 7plus; will I miss the touch ID fingerprint system?

    Posted: 07 Feb 2022 03:20 PM PST

I'm the kind of person that holds on to phones forever, yeah.

Anyway, I went to purchase a new phone tonight - I don't pay attention to tech announcements and all that stuff, so I was surprised to see there's apparently no touch ID fingerprint system on the newer phones?

Am I going to be super bummed out by this? I do use it a lot - instead of logging in with passwords to apps (bank apps for instance, for which I tend to forget my password), the app store. Plus simply just unlocking my phone as opposed to typing in a pin.

It looks like they dropped the fingerprints several models ago and at this point who knows if it's coming back? So there's no point in me holding out with hope.

I mean, do they have a new quick-system implemented that replaces it or did we just go straight back to pins and passwords?

(... While you're already here I guess, if I move from iphone to iphone, all my apps and photos and everything automatically move over for me, right? I've never moved straight platform on a phone before, in fact this is only the second phone I've ever used - I hold on to things forever. I am not looking forward to doing all the set up stuff again. Is that automatic? )

Why is the production year of iPhones always the previous year instead of being like vehicle manufacturers the following year?

    Posted: 08 Feb 2022 08:04 AM PST

Why is the latest iPhone always from last years model? Like for example why doesn't apple not release the iPhone 13 pro max in 2021, but call it 2022's model because 2022 is when the majority of people will be using it like they do with vehicle production. You think apple would be doing this right?

Anyone Else still on a 7 plus or older model holding out for a notchless phone?

    Posted: 07 Feb 2022 10:23 PM PST

I'm so bored with my 7 plus lol. Even though I'm on iOS 15 it still does not have all the capabilities that iOS 15 have to offer. On the flip side I refuse to buy an iPhone with that notch.. I just can't do it. My phone sound went away last month and I couldn't record videos nor make phone calls anymore.

Feeling defeated I went to the T-mobile store and looked around at the selection of iPhones available.I just couldn't bring myself to pull the trigger. That notch is just the ugliest thing I've ever seen on a phone. My sister say you don't notice it after a while but I don't care. It's so ugly to me. I've had every iPhone since iPhone original except "s" years. But once it got to the iPhone X I hated it.

So I spent $120, yes $120 on a phone that's about $200 refurbished to be repaired. Or would have cost me maybe $200 or less to get a brand new iPhone 13 pro max. But that's how much I loath that notch. I just couldn't part ways with my 7 plus. From all the rumors I'm hoping this year the iPhone 14 will free me from this aging iPhone and I'll be in notchless iPhone heaven with a new 14 pro max. We'll see. Anyone else still on older model iPhones for daily use?

Upgraded iPhone 11 to iPhone 13 Mini, and the camera is worse?

    Posted: 07 Feb 2022 05:02 PM PST

Here are a couple of examples

    Indoor iPhone 11 https://i.imgur.com/7zv3LxX.jpg

Same shot with iPhone 13 https://i.imgur.com/Rf5vNwU.jpg

My observations of the 13's shot are much less vibrant colours, more murky looking, less shadow detail. It looks like it was taken with an iPhone 6 or thereabouts.

Night "out of window with indoor light pollution" - iPhone 11: https://i.imgur.com/7covzHs.jpg

Same shot with iPhone 13: https://i.imgur.com/YUwgNt8.jpg

Neither are great because I left the indoor light on and it was leaking through the gap in the curtains, but goodness me the i13 one looks like it was taken with a potato.

Night attempt 2 (indoor light off) - iPhone 11: https://i.imgur.com/9Q4Tg3O.jpg

Same shot with iPhone 13 (same 3s night mode): https://i.imgur.com/H5HMUFk.jpg

The iPhone 11 one has way more detail. The 13 one is just blurry and horrible. To be fair it has less noise, but at the expense of everything else.

Is it just me, I know things can be subjective? Am I missing a setting somewhere that didn't get transferred from one phone to the other? (I'd rather have answers other than "return it", we can't just return stuff we don't like in the UK)

My (very) Professional Predictions on the iPhone 14.

    Posted: 07 Feb 2022 03:19 PM PST

Firstly, I AM just a person and anything that I say is my opinion so you can totally disagree. This is just my predication of what the next iPhone will be based on my knowledge of Apple and the iPhone. I could be totally wrong and probably will be wrong, but this is just what I think the next iPhone will be like.

    1. The Notch - Its here to stay, at least for the next couple iPhones. Now, I know rumors say the iPhone 14 will have a hole punch display and what not, but I don't think that will be the case. Apple just shrank the notch last year, which took FOREVER! Forever being the key word there, the design of the iPhone takes time to change and we usually don't see big changes year after year (as long as you count shrinking the notch as a big change). Apple usually likes to stick to a design for awhile before making big changes, an example being the old notch staying around for 4 years! I just don't see them making another big change to the same thing they just made a big change to. The new smaller notch is here to stay at least until the iPhone 15.
    2. The Camera Bump - Again I think it's here to stay. The camera bump is one of the things that you either hate or don't care about, for me I couldn't care less about it. I think that Apple knows this and doesn't see any rush to change anything about it, if it ain't broke don't fix it. But I also think there is another reason for the camera bump, that being that it gives the feeling of professional, high quality cameras. Have you seen the iPhone 13 Pro? The camera bump on it is MASSIVE. It gives me (and hopefully others) a sense of trust and pride in the camera system in their phone because of how good it looks and feels in the hand. I guarantee you that if you give someone without any knowledge of phones a iPhone 12 Pro and and iPhone 13 Pro and ask them which camera system they think is better, they will always pick the 13 Pro. This simply because of the size difference, it gives the impression of a better camera and is a great marketing tool for Apple. Not only would it be hard to completely get rid of it, it would take away a good that feeling of a high quality camera. Also, camera bumps add depth to phones, breaking up the solid metal and glass rectangle.
    3. The Camera System - Now this is one thing that I think will change! Apple needs something new in the iPhone 14 and the most obvious option in bigger camera sensors. I predict that Apple will at least go with a 48 megapixel on the main camera of the iPhone 14 Pro (this will not come to the regular 14). But, I wouldn't be surprised if the go all out and give the telephoto and ultrawide 48 megapixel sensors as well. This move just makes too much sense at this point, all the competition are beating them in the megapixel race and Apple is in need of something new for the iPhone. Now, you may ask why I don't think it will be larger, like a 108 megapixel or something else. I think that Apple will just be trying to compete, not win the megapixel race because they just don't need to. The 48 megapixels will allow for 8K recording which will only improve the amazing video capabilities on the iPhone and at the same time be a great marketing tactic. Also, the iPhone takes great photos as is, so there isn't a big need to shoot all the way up to 108 megapixels. 48 will allow for crisper, more detailed shots while not being too much, which could lead to other issues with shadows and light. It would also allow Apple to further separate the Pro line from its regular 14 line. This will be Apples big new feature come September.
    4. Better Display - Even though they upgraded the iPhone 13 Pro's display form the 12 I could see them potentially increasing the resolution and letting the display refresh all the way down to 1hz. Sadly no hole punch (not yet at least)! This would help save battery life and make the displays crisper, another selling point.
    5. Charging/Magsafe - Lastly, I could see Apple adding support for faster charging speeds but I'm not confident that they will. I think that Apple could potentially add charging speeds up to 60 watts which is a huge jump for the 20 watts that the iPhone 13 charges at now. They could also add support for reverse wireless charging to charger the airpods. This feature has been lacking from the iPhone for years and is due, but may never come. I'll also mention that I Apple will improve Magsafe, making the magnets stronger and adding new accessories. These would just be the extra features of the new iPhone and all are perfectly reasonable is but, Apple can be considered by many and the complete opposite of reasonable.

Now, that was a lot and could be completely wrong come September, but this is my best prediction of the upcoming iPhone 14 lineup based on my evaluation of Apples previous iPhones. Please share you thoughts and ideas and let me know what you think!

In advance, sorry for any spelling errors..

Bought an iPhone 13 and quickly returned it. Coming from an iPhone 8, it felt like a downgrade.

    Posted: 07 Feb 2022 05:11 PM PST

    I'll keep this post brief.

After using an iPhone 8 for years I decided to treat myself to an iPhone 13 Mini.

Long story short, I returned it a few days later. It felt like a big downgrade or - at best - a mediocre revision of the phone I already had.

    • The screen notch was annoying as hell. Not only the notch itself but the fact that the text around the notch didn't stay still. The time, for example, would resize as other icons (e.g. the location indicator) appeared and disappeared. This was annoying.

    • They took away the ability to quick switch between apps by long-pressing the left side of the screen. I understand it was replaced by swiping the home bar at the bottom, but that is way less ergonomic than using the side of the screen and a totally uncomfortable movement for your thumb. They could have at least retained the option to use the old switch method for those who prefer it.

    • They changed the location of the quick panel from the bottom of the screen to the top-right. The top-right of the screen is literally the worst possible area they could have chosen for such a frequently-used feature. Seriously, WTF were they thinking?

    • The phone feels thick, square, and heavy for its size in a very bad way.

    • Face ID? Guess I'm the only person who likes to check their phone as it lies flat on my desk, (i.e. where it can't see my face). Makes it impossible to unlock without lifting it up or using a passcode.

In summary: a massive "Meh" to the latest iPhone model.
