System Data taking up 282GB of my 512GB drive Posted: 30 Dec 2021 05:01 PM PST I have a new Macbook Air M1 running Monterey, with no Time Machine backups, and when I run CleanMyMac, it only finds ~7GB to clean out, and I am getting to the point that I am running out of space. I have a few Parallels VMs running that just froze up due to not having any space to work with, and that's how I found out that System Data was eating up the drive. I tried rebooting, thinking that it would clear out a ton of cache, but nothing has changed. Any tips on what to do in this situation? Is there something that works like WinDirStat that gives a better look at what the culprit might be here? Sorry, I am a bit of a newcomer to macOS and am not sure if this is something I need to actually worry about or if it an actual issue. Also, as for VMs, I just have two. One is under 60GB and the other is right at 64GB. When I go to 'Manage' under Storage, I can see that these VMs aren't taking up a ton of space (and I do not have snapshots on them right now), and System Data is greyed out and can't be touched. SOLUTION: I also use Plex and had some movies downloaded from a previous business trip that I forgot about. For some reason, Plex saves these under the 'Application Support' folder, so macOS assumes it to be application related files. I cleared these out and all is good in the world. Totally my bad, but I wish Plex stored the downloaded movies into a folder in Documents so that you could quickly find your storage hogging culprit instead of digging through like I did.. Posted: 30 Dec 2021 10:52 PM PST Hello, I'm learning to program and I have a few older Macs lying around. If you have any resources on programming for these older machines, please leave a link in the comments. I'd like to try to create a very basic terminal for these pre-UNIX systems (commands like mkdir, cd, maybe a basic text editor). I figured I'd get pretty good at managing memory efficiently if I only have 512 kilobytes to work with! [link] [comments]
If it's not too much a bother, can anyone help, please? Posted: 30 Dec 2021 07:22 PM PST Happy New Year, all! I've just recently switched to the macOS universe and I'm still trying to learn the ropes as quickly as I could, so apologies for such a noob question and if this isn't the place to ask it. How do I delete spaces between words? I know about option+delete, but I want to delete only the space after deleting a word. For example: "The trees and bamboo are tall now." If I needed to revise this to "The trees, surely, are tall now," and the cursor happened to be at the end of the word, "bamboo," I would press option+delete to clear out the pertinent words. When it gets to "trees [space]," option+delete will take out both [space] and the word. How do I delete just the space and leave "trees" intact? Of course, I could stop at "and" and tap just the delete key to fine-tune it, but I was just wondering if there's a combination I might not know about where deleting spaces was possible (before starting a deletion run, so to speak). I did search online for an answer but came up short and didn't find anything useful, so hoping awesome folks of reddit could give advice on this. Thanks so much in advance! [link] [comments]

Ok how do I add a directory to PATH? Posted: 30 Dec 2021 08:01 PM PST Trying to add /python3 to PATH so the commands will work in terminal, and I can do it temporarily with export PATH=/originalpath:/whatever the python path is Then my command (ex. asitop) works. But that's only for that session, if I close and open terminal it doesn't keep the addition. Pls help :) I'm not a coder but I enjoy learning this stuff. I should prob learn a little bit of coding lol [link] [comments]
Mac mini late 2014 won't boot after trying to boot into Linux. Kde neon Posted: 30 Dec 2021 06:20 PM PST I have a windows keyboard so I used my Bros apple keyboard to press and hold the options key(or command tried both) and the monitor would say no video. I eventually gave up and gave the apple keyboard back to my bro for his Mac. I tried booting the computer again and this time it booted into Linux without me pressing anything. I got to Linux and went into the kde neon installer. I went to the partitioner and selected my Samsung USB SSD. I partitioned it but never clicked ok as the installer keep crashing so I figured I should try a different distro. Now to present time the Mac mini turns on but Os will not boot I get a black screen that basically says no signal and the monitor turns off while the mini stays on. I turned taking everything out the USB and taking out the power supply tried resetting nvram and tried getting into safe mode. Nothing. Any help would be great [link] [comments]
Battery life montery on m1 macbook pro Posted: 31 Dec 2021 01:38 AM PST Hi guys, I recently bought a macbook pro m1 and upgraded it to montery immeadiately. What I've noticed I get nowhere near the 20 hours of battery, it's more about 8-10. I understand this is still pretty decent, but it's nowhere near what they advertised, and 8-10 is only under low load (browsing, mail, etc). Is this normal? I checked battery health it's 100% since it's new and nothing seems too off. I read some thing more people have the same issue with the m1. [link] [comments]

Any issues with working in Windows on Mac? Posted: 30 Dec 2021 05:31 PM PST Hi folks, looking for advice. I need a windows laptop for working from home. Hoping to just use my existing 2016 MBP and dual install Windows. My work would then install necessary Windows software for working from home. Any advice, problems, etc you can suggest? Don't want to spend $200 on Windows only to find there are problems with this approach. (But also don't want to buy a crappy Windows laptop!) Thanks! [link] [comments]
1440p text scaling on an M1 Mac Mini Posted: 30 Dec 2021 03:41 PM PST I have an M1 Mac Mini plugged into an LG 27GL850 and having issues with text size on the native 1440p resolution being way too small. It seems to only way to adjust this (without a 3rd party app) is to change the scaled resolution, which seems to adjust the resolution, not just the text size like I want. When compared to my windows computer, it looks crap. I've also read that using an HDMI to DP cable will enable a feature to natively changed the font size at the default resolution, but before I invest in a new cable I wanted to confirm if this is the best approach. I've seen a few articles online, but can't really see any real world examples. Thanks [link] [comments]

Problems with downloading MONTEREY Posted: 30 Dec 2021 11:56 PM PST hello, I've got my MacBook Pro 2015 8GB/128GB (currently running Catalina) and I wanted to download Monterey. First, when I was downloading it everything went smooth, but when the mac was rebooting itself it installed Catalina again.. so I started to download Monterey again, but at the end of downloading it showed that it can't be downloaded.. please I need help ❤️ [link] [comments]
Posted: 30 Dec 2021 10:58 PM PST I've been trying to update my OS for the past 6 months and I thought the new Monterrey update might get me past this issue but to no luck still and I'm still stuck. When I go to update and install the new OS it goes as far as downloading, installing then restarts. Then it goes into a boot loop that seems to be only fixable by booting in recovery then reinstalling Catalina. I just got done doing a "factory reset" and wiped everything. Tried to then install the updated OS and it jumped right back into the boot loop. Im on an iMac. Any help would be appreciated. [link] [comments]
How to force photo scanning ? - M1 Mini with Satechi Posted: 30 Dec 2021 03:19 PM PST I have an M1 Mini with a satechi external hard drive. For weeks now I've had 13,000 photos that haven't been scanned in the Apple photos app. My photos library is stored on the satechi. Settings are configured such that the max mini doesn't go to sleep. Any ideas on how to force photo scanning ? [link] [comments]

Changing text editing shortcuts globally Posted: 30 Dec 2021 09:46 PM PST So I am a newcomer to macos (used to daily drive Windows and Linux at different points), and I am just getting accustomed to the quirks of mac keyboards as well as macos. I have just about managed to learned to use command instead of control for various shortcuts, but there is one quirk that still bothers me. In Windows and Linux, Ctrl + Backspace deletes one word, Ctrl + left/right moves the cursor to the left/right by one word etc. But in macos, Command + Delete deletes the entire line, Command + left/right works as home/end keys. Now I know that the same behavior can be replicated by using the Option key instead of Command. But I'm wondering if there's a way to change the global behavior of Command + Delete and Command+left/right to make my life easier? P.S. If your suggestion is to just learn the new way of doing things, thanks for the tip, but I decided to ask the question because I'm trying and struggling. [link] [comments]
M1 MBA causing eye strain/discomfort Posted: 30 Dec 2021 08:14 PM PST Hi all, Recently bought myself a new 13" M1 Macbook Air. I used it the first day with no issues, but starting on the second day I noticed myself having difficulty focusing/dry eyes/tunnel vision, mainly when reading articles or wherever there is lots of text, specifically black letters on white background. Sometimes it feels like I am hyperfocusing on the screen and having to consciously think about where my eyes are looking, which is a different feeling. It's kinda hard to explain. This mainly starts after about 10-15 minutes of continuously looking at the screen. I've been using it for work as well, and the effect has been hit or miss - some days it will bother me all day; other days, it won't bother me as much. This could also be because I have an external monitor for work and split my time between looking at my laptop and looking at my monitor. At first, I was concerned it was just placebo effect and my mind was playing tricks on me, but after a few weeks I don't think that's the cause. I've tried all of the suggestions I could find online - Night Shift, TrueTone, lowering/raising brightness, disabling font smoothing, moving the laptop further from or closer to my face, color filters, etc. Some of it helps temporarily but I almost always find myself with the same issue eventually. This is my first Macbook, but I have been an iPhone user for a while and have used the iPhone 5S, XS, and now 12 Pro with no problems whatsoever. I have read a few posts on different websites about similar issues but was looking for more feedback. It doesn't make my laptop completely unusable, but I'm still within the return period with Best Buy and I'd rather not spend the money with the hope of using the laptop for a few years at least if I'm going to continue having this issue. I'm considering attempting to swap it out for a Macbook with an Intel chip (Best Buy still carries the Intel MBP) to see if that helps, because lots of the posts I have read online deal with the new M1 computers. Has anyone else had this issue/found a fix/know what might be causing it or if it's worth trying to swap it out for a different model? Or even just try getting another Air and seeing if the issue is still the same? [link] [comments]
Is anyone using a triple external monitor in MBA/MBP m1? Posted: 30 Dec 2021 08:04 PM PST Has anyone achieved this using a Dock with DisplayLink? If yes, anything to consider? problems, workarounds, etc. I'm planning on doing this but Didn't find any vids on YouTube. I have a MBA M1 and just got a Dell D3100 but i'm missing the USB A to B cable. Will be getting this one next week. Ideally, i would use it in Clamshell mode and sit it behind one of the monitors. Thanks! Edit: added about experience with displaylink [link] [comments]
Preview Has Never Been Broken - Until Now Posted: 30 Dec 2021 07:16 AM PST I've used Preview (Space Bar) to peek at content for years now, and in Monterey it's the first time I've ever seen Preview not work. What's strange is it works sometimes, then it just stops opening the preview full, it opens just a preview of the icon of the file. Am I the only one having this issue? [link] [comments]

Mac Pro 2013 Cylinder- What do people use them for in 2021? Posted: 30 Dec 2021 05:45 PM PST Hi All, I have a mac pro 2013 cylinder that i am running esxi on it for a windows 10 vm. I use the windows 10 vm to manage my music library using music bee as it is windows only and i have a macbook pro as my main computer. I may stop using music bee and using a mac program to manage my music. If this is the case, i may sell the mac pro since people are still paying a good amount of money for it nowadays. I just wanted to verify before i sell it, if there could be any possible future use. What do you use your mac pro for? [link] [comments] |
