    macOS Monterey update WITHOUT the original Apple SSD

    Posted: 03 Nov 2021 01:43 PM PDT

    First of all: This tutorial is mainly for experienced users. I assume no liability if something should go wrong in the process. In the worst case, your device could become unusable.

    As many of you probably already know, macOS Monterey cannot be easily installed with a third-party SSD. If you try to install the update in the normal way, it may happen that the previously installed macOS version starts again after the update. The reason for this is that macOS Monterey needs an EFI update and for some stupid reason this can only be done with the original Apple SSD. In my case, the SSD is a Sabrent Rocket nano with 512GB in a 2017 13" MacBook Pro.

    Below I'll explain how you can work around this problem. ;)

    First of all you need the installation image for macOS Monterey. You can download it either directly from the System Preferences as a normal update or with tools like InstallInstallMacOS. It doesn't matter which method you use, but I would recommend to download the update regularly, so you can install this update later as usual and you don't have to bother with third-party software like InstallInstallMacOS.

    After the image is downloaded you have to disable SIP. You do this by turning off your Mac and holding CMD + R when you turn it on again. This will take you to the macOS Recovery. Here you have to open the terminal in the menu bar in Utilities. Enter the following command and restart your Mac.

    csrutil disable

    After your Mac is powered on again find the installation image. If you downloaded it through system preferences you can find it in "/Applications/Install macOS Monterey.app". Rightclick the App and click on "Show Package Contents". Now navigate to the directory "Contents/SharedSupport". There you will find a file named "SharedSupport.dmg", open it with a double click. You may have to copy the file out of the installer to open it. When you open the file, you should see a folder with two files and two folders in it.

    One of the folders is called "com_apple_MobileAsset_MacSoftwareUpdate". Open it. Inside there are some .json files and one .zip file. Copy the .zip file from the image and unzip it. Open the unzipped folder and navigate to the directory "AssetData/boot/EFI/EFIPayloads". Here you will find all EFI firmware files that are included in macOS Monterey. Now find the appropriate file for your Mac. The filenames contain the shortened Model Identifier. You can find your Model Identifier in "About This Mac" -> "System Report..." -> "Hardware" -> "Model Identifier". -> "Hardware" -> "Model Identifier".

    IMxxx.fd = iMac

    MBxxx.fd = MacBook

    MBAxx.fd = MacBookAir

    MBPxxx.fd = MacBookPro

    MMxx.scap = MacMini

    MPxx.scap = MacPro

    Now open a terminal and enter the following command. Of course you have to replace the path to the firmware file with the correct path.

    sudo bless -mount / -firmware <PATH>/YOUR_MODEL.fd --verbose -recovery

    Once this command has been executed successfully, shutdown your Mac and restart it. Now your Mac should update its firmware. This may take a few minutes and your Mac will reboot a few times. Once your Mac is booted again you can check the new firmware version number in "About This Mac" -> "System Report..." -> "Hardware" -> "System Firmware". -> "Hardware" -> "System Firmware Version". You should now see a higher version than before, which means that the update was successful.

    Now that the update has been successfully installed, you can re-enable SIP in Recovery with the command csrutil enable and install the software update to macOS Monterey as usual.

    Once the update is complete, you should be greeted by macOS Monterey. :)

    Safari and ad guard. Youtube is annoying me, anything else to get?

    Posted: 03 Nov 2021 06:40 PM PDT

    Just picked up the 14" MacBook. Using Adguard and YouTube just spins when opening a video until the ad stops I assume. Pretty annoying.

    Anyway to get that off? If not, anything else I can download to help

    Thanks

    Can somebody explain Hide, Minimize, Zoom, Fullscreen and the relative keyboard shortcuts to cycle between them?

    Posted: 03 Nov 2021 07:06 PM PDT

    I'm new to MacOS, coming from Windows. In Windows, I can minimize a full screen app, alt-tab or click on the dock, and it comes back. In MacOS, this isn't the case. If something is minimized, Command-Tab doesn't bring the window back, but brings the menu bar back. What is the point? Also, if I have multiple windows open, such as two pdfs in Preview, how can I keystroke between them?

    Thanks,

    16" MBP M1 Max: kernel panics after sleep

    Posted: 03 Nov 2021 04:33 PM PDT

    I've had this machine for a few days now and every time i come back to my desk MacOS has restarted with the following kernel panic:

    panic(cpu 2 caller 0xfffffe002d557c40): "pci-bridge: pci restore invalid deviceid 0x15d48086\n" @IOPCIBridge.cpp:1524 Debugger message: panic Memory ID: 0x6 OS release type: User OS version: 21A559

    ...

    Full text here: https://pastebin.com/t7RLb2G8

    I note a line about my dock which must be the only installed kext. It's a CalDigit TS3+:

    last stopped kext at 3059994044: com.CalDigit.ThunderboltStationChargingSupport

    I'll try disabling that overnight and unplugging all my peripherals. In the meantime is there anything else obvious to do? I've really not had a chance to mess around with this thing enough for it to be a software problem - but fingers crossed i don't want to be going back to the Mac store with it.

    MacOS - Notifications

    Posted: 03 Nov 2021 05:12 PM PDT

    I think Mojave you could interact with the notifications when the popped up and take actions. Like reply to a text message or delete an email.

    However, now to quick reply to a text message I need to take several steps. Interacting with an email isn't even possible anymore.

    Is anyone else bothered by this? It adds friction to my life and makes it less simple. Who is designing this and what is their ethos?

    I love my Mac, I use it all the time, but I really wish they could change this.

    Bluetooth connection request

    Posted: 04 Nov 2021 01:55 AM PDT

    Bluetooth connection request

    Hello. Since the update from Big Sur to Monterey, I always have a message from Bluetooth that a device with its MAC number wants to connect. (see screenshot)

    I never had this query on Big Sur and it comes at least 4 times / day now.

    It is no longer possible using the SHIFT and OPTION keys to debug Bluetooth with Monterey

    You have to go through the terminal.

    I wanted to know if there is a way with the MAC address to find the device?

    Thank you

    Media Keys (F7 F8 F9 rewind/pause/skip) - any way to adjust media priority?

    Posted: 03 Nov 2021 06:17 PM PDT

    Say I'm already listening to spotify, and then open a streaming video on safari or firefox...if I hit the pause key it stops the newest video, when I'd prefer it to stop spotify.

    Is there a way to adjust settings so these keys apply to the latest audio/video, instead of the previous?

    A new playing video will typically be on the screen I'm on, whereas spotify is likely minimized or an another desktop, so it's more annoying to find it and pause it...

    MacOS Monterey factory reset

    Posted: 03 Nov 2021 06:15 PM PDT

    Hi, does the MacOS Monterey factory reset wipe all the data on the disk?
    Even if you have several volumes?

    Or will it just wipe all data stored on the OS volume?

    Catalina or Monterrey for MacBook Air model A1466?

    Posted: 03 Nov 2021 09:46 PM PDT

    Was given to me by a friend. We wiped it and then attempted to download macOS Monterrey. After I select the option "reinstall macOS", and click continue, it proceeds to the progress bar with the estimated remaining time. Once it's finished, it takes me all the way back to the "reinstall macOS" option and I have to start all over. It has done this over and over. We thought it might have been the attempt to download Monterrey that screwed it up but we're complete laymen. Any advice?

    Brick after Monterey?

    Posted: 04 Nov 2021 12:39 AM PDT

    Hey following this Problem, I actually forgot to press R while booting and it just booted into installation. Even though it showed errors (like F-2000. F-2100) all the time before in the CMD+R Menu with the spinning globe. That led me to restart this process before these times.

    It started Big Sur. So far so fine. And I even could install it. But then I wanted to install all security updates. After that I installed Monterey. The installation finished just fine, but when I rebooted, the fan just hit very loud and everything stays black.

    I tried booting with D, CMD-R, Option+R, Option-D, NVRam Reset. Just black.

    Am I a problem magnet regarding MacOS? I must be doing something wrong when I get constantly problems, while others say it's the most stable system and "idiot proof".

    Did Monterey upgrade break my Bose SoundLink Mini?

    Posted: 03 Nov 2021 08:37 PM PDT

    False(?) alarm! - After ignoring the speaker and laptop for about an hour, I tried again and it worked straight-away; no need for reboots, etc.

    Just upgraded to Monterey on my 2015-ish Air. Still checking things out but it looks like the upgrade has disabled my Bose SoundLink Mini (version 1?). Looking for suggestions on what to do other than buy another external speaker.

    I was playing a youtube video before and after the upgrade. Before was fine; after, everything looks fine but no sound is coming out. My laptop speakers, wired headphones, Pixel 3 running Android 12 and BT headphones all play music.

    I've rebooted the Air. I've checked the Bose website. I've reset the Mini. I looked into updating the software but it requires USB-A (on both ends?) and I only have the power and (round) aux ports on the Mini.

    Any ideas?

    Can someone explain standby on mac to me?

    Posted: 03 Nov 2021 06:17 PM PDT

    Hi,

    I am just getting started with macos and got a new macbook pro 14 m1.

    I dont understand how standby/on/off works on macos. I have dropbox running in the background, syncing a lot of files.

    1. On battery: After 5 minutes the display turns off and I think the macbook goes to sleep. Is this correct? Is it correct, that dropbox/icloud etc. would not keep on runnin/syncing, when it goes to sleep?
    2. Is there any difference between shutting the lid and the "sleep" that the mac goes into, after 5 minutes of idle?
    3. Can I tell the mac to turn off the monitor but stay on and keep on syncing files? I cant find that feature in the settings. I can only decide, after what time the monitor turns off (and I think than it goes completely to sleep?).

    Thank you :)

    can I remotely control one laptop from another without any screen sharing?

    Posted: 03 Nov 2021 11:59 PM PDT

    I've got at set up where I have a permanent old laptop hooked up to a projector and I like to lounge at a table with my personal current laptop.

    Is it possible to use my table laptop to control the projector laptop via the table laptop's keyboard and mouse?

    I don't want to use VNC or any remote desktop viewing where I see the projector laptop on my table laptop. Ideally I want to hit a hotkey like CMD+SHIT+OPT+R (or something) to trigger my table laptop to send my table laptop keyboard and mouse to control the projector laptop.

    Anyone heard of something like this? I've heard something like this is upcoming in macOS. I'm curious if something is already established.

    cheers!
