Jameson on Twitter: "We recently found that the new 2021 M1 MacBooks cut our Android build times in half. So for a team of 9, $32k of laptops will actually save $100k in productivity over 2022. The break-even point happens at 3 months. TL;DR Engineering hours are much more expensive than laptops!"

The new MBP M1 Max 14" battery life is incredible after turning on "Low Power" mode

    Posted: 03 Nov 2021 01:38 PM PDT

I got a new MBP M1 Max 14" on launch day, and have found the battery life OK-but-not-great for my usage. I spend a lot of time in zoom calls, Slack, coding (node.js) and general web apps and have been getting approx 5 hours on battery at normal workload.

Well, today I turned on "Low Power" mode and the difference has been amazing! The system performance feels absolutely fine - most apps it's not noticeable, but things like building code take an extra few seconds... however battery life has been amazing!

I'm now getting more like 12 hours of normal work on a single charge. Would definitely recommend this if you're not super fussed about getting maximum performance on battery. In my opinion the extra hours (and hours!) of battery is very worth it. And when plugged in to power the performance is right back to 100% again.

To enable low power mode - open "System Preferences" > "Battery" > "Battery" > "Low Power Mode"

First day with air tags, got my stolen stuff back in 20 minutes

    Posted: 03 Nov 2021 07:35 PM PDT

I'm a social worker and I run a small community nonprofit for vulnerable neighbors. I love what I do but I definitely need to be aware of my belongings at all times. As this is not something I excel at, my bag disappeared tonight. It was a few minutes before I realized my airpods were in there with an airtag. It was 9:02. I grabbed my friend and we drove to where they were. The man was sitting on the sidewalk, I apologized and said I thought there had been a mix up at our site. I asked if he had my things, he said he did not. My friend pinged my tag and he couldn't deny it. He told me to look through his bag and I found mine. I bought him cigarettes to say thank you as he apologized profusely stating he did not mean to steal it. By 9:18, I was on my way home.

TLDR: airtag saved the day, 100% worth it 🙌

iSight on the 16" MacBook Pro 2021 makes my face look like it's made of smooth plastic.

I was looking forward to the higher resolution camera, but it seems that you can't turn off that neural network low light super resolution nonsense. When zooming with average indoors light, I look like some kind of weird plasticine baby. No face texture at all.

    Airpod pros durablity

    Posted: 03 Nov 2021 07:28 PM PDT

I'll be getting this out of the way, I'm not an apple user, or customer , or a targeted demographic, The airpod pros are my only apple product and I've been using them for a few months and they've just been amazing.

I'm working in construction, specifically the pipeline in rough conditions, with all the dust, moisture, and heat depending at the time of year, they've never had a hiccup once, the ear piece is still as durable, and comfortable as they were when I first got them.

The ANC was a huge surprise when I first heard them turn on, no weird pressure sound or feeling, and as I travel a bit when it comes to work, I can't hear any of the outside noise, at low volume they're clear, and even at max volume I don't hear any, to little distortion in quality.

The day of posting this, I accidentally put them through the washer and dryer in a rush. It turned on as soon as I put the case on the charger and no audible discrepancies, it took about 5 minutes after leaving the dryer to cool down for them to fully connect to my phone.

Speaking of which, even though the airpods are an apple product, they connect, and function perfectly on my Samsung phone, which was amazing to see, click and hold for bixby, the ANC works great, and we have an app for the charge level, and earbud state. Which is another reason I love the airpods, they aren't locked to a certain phone, OS, or anything they just work and work amazing.

The battery life is good too, the charging case lasts me between 1 - 3 days, depending on my usage, and it's convenient to be able to pick up and go, charging the case doesn't take long either which is usually the hit or miss with any cases.

    TL;DR:

Even using a Samsung phone, and not being in the apple economy, The airpod pros have served me well, and are a high recommendation for anyone!

How come the Apple Watch doesn’t use its U1 chip?

    Posted: 03 Nov 2021 01:58 PM PDT

Apple Watch Series 6 and later comes with a U1 chip, but it seems like it's not being used at all (that I'm aware of).

It's not being used for any precision finding for AirTags either. It seems like a waste of technology so far.

They could even expand on the pinging your iPhone thing and let you use Precision Finding to find your U1-equipped iPhone.

watchOS 8 adds Find Devices, Find Items, & Find Friends apps to your watch. The first two apps could have gotten some real use out of the U1, but nothing yet.

I'm hoping watchOS 9 finally adds a use for it.

Which browser, email, and calendar applications/services are you using for MacOS and iOS?

    Posted: 03 Nov 2021 12:29 PM PDT

Currently, I'm using Safari on both Mac and iPhone for its battery efficiency, but sometimes web pages don't load correctly. I don't want to use Chrome because I'm not a fan of Google's stances on privacy and advertising, plus I feel like they're slowly controlling the entire internet. After the iCloud photo scanning debacle, I'm not sure that I fully trust Apple (Safari) anymore either. Is Firefox a good alternative for both Mac and iOS?

Also, for email and calendar services I'm using Gmail. On my Mac, I use the website to access email, or the Mac Calendar app. On my phone, I use the the gmail app and the native calendar app (I'm only using it over the Google Calendar app because I like the native calendar widgets!). I've used Gmail for my whole life and am okay with switching to something else (for the same reasons I don't want to use Chrome), but don't really know which alternative to go for. I tried Outlook for a bit (app and web), but wasn't a fan of the interface- it felt clunky after using gmail for so long. Does anyone have any alternative recommendations? Is it better to access email from an app (like the Outlook client) or the native web page? I've heard ProtonMail is pretty decent, plus the paid version also offers VPN services.

The ULTIMATE MacBook Pro Battery Test! (13 vs 14 vs 16 Pro & Max)

64 core M1 would already beat the best threadripper

    Posted: 03 Nov 2021 08:57 PM PDT

If you scale up the M1 max from 10 cores to 64 cores, then it would be 175% of the performance of the best workstation CPU, AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 3995WX.

    https://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare/Apple-M1-Max-10-Core-3200-MHz-vs-AMD-Ryzen-Threadripper-PRO-3995WX/4585vs3837

The real question is, what is the market for high-end Mac Pro customers? What is the balance of CPU, GPU, memory, and NE do they actually need for their workloads?

Or is this is a case of, you need to build a faster computer for people to people to build software to fully utilize it?

Apple needs to answer these questions in order to size their largest processor they are going to create. They probably only want to create one or two processors and bin them like they did for M1 Pro and M1 Max.

My guess is, they wouldn't jump to 64 cores right away as you can see their current die size for 10 cores is already pretty massive. Maybe with a process node shrink it would make sense. It would makes sense if they release M2X Max for the Mac Pro first. Then they could probably fit 64 cores in to a reasonable die size.
