    Help with MacBook camera?

    Posted: 16 Nov 2021 06:58 AM PST

I have the 2015 MacBook. I've had it since 2016 and last week the camera stopped working. Whenever I launch an app that requires the camera the green light next to the camera starts blinking.

After getting in touch with Apple support, I reset SMC, even run a diagnostic which said nothing was wrong. They told me there's not much that can be done now and I should ask on a forum. I'm at my wits end. I have a test tomorrow and I need the camera to work, can someone PLEASE help

Benchmarks: M1 max compared to mid-2015 i7 MacBook

Everything feels at least twice as fast. Incredible performance and battery life!

And SSD disk performance is 3-5 times faster, too. I'm timing some Lightroom tasks on both machines, too, if anyone's interested.

    Chase Rewards Apple Discount

    Posted: 16 Nov 2021 08:57 AM PST

Hey! On chase's reward portal, I saw that you can get 25% off apple products, but can't customize the macs. Does anyone know if you can buy through the normal Apple store and pay yourself with points to get that 25% off?

Is the new M1 MBP 16" an overkill for my needs? Should I just get an M1 Air or go all in on the MBP 16"?

    Posted: 16 Nov 2021 07:19 AM PST

I'm a digital nomad and my needs performance wise are pretty basic. I don't need a whole lot of power for any creative work or coding. Power and performance wise, the M1 Air would 100% satisfy my needs.

    However:

    - Being a nomad means that my laptop screen is basically my only screen. External monitors etc. are not feasible while traveling. Right now I'm on a Thinkpad X1 Carbon 14" (this will be my very first MacBook), and the screen is already quite small. I'm almost positive I wouldn't want my screen to be any smaller (i.e. the 13.3" M1 Air), and having more screen real estate would be actually really nice. Maybe not an absolute necessity, but I think it would make for a very different work environment. Since I'll be using the MacBook for many hours every day, the additional weight and size of lugging around the MBP and the additional investment is pretty well justified.

    - The 2nd biggest selling point of the MBP 16" for me is the screen brightness. I'm on the road frequently, working from cafes, outdoors, etc., and 1000-nit peak brightness of the miniLED would be absolutely terrific. M1 Air has ~365 nits of brightness. My current Thinkpad has 469 nits. I wouldn't really want to go lower than what I currently have.

    - The ports on MBP 16" are a really nice feature. As is the longer battery life. Again these aren't very critical as the M1 Air already has an extremely good battery life and I could probably get used to less ports coming off a Thinkpad. Also, M1 Air has no vents which is a noteworthy benefit in my book.

The main things that are making me hesitant to make the final purchase decision are the following:

    - MBP 16" might just be an overkill for my needs (performance wise). Why lug around a 4.8 lb workstation that's way more expensive and is overall less portable, while I could probably get all my work done on the M1 Air? (Just with a smaller screen that might not be bright enough in some scenarios)

    - The price. I have no problems affording the MBP 16", but it's always a factor. Especially if the laptop gets stolen or damaged, etc. (it's always gonna be a little more to worry about)

Also, I've never used an iPad (still new to the whole Apple ecosystem, just got an iPhone 2 months ago and loving it), but here's an idea. Since 80% of use cases for the MacBook will be to carry it to and from a coworking space in a backpack - where the added weight and size don't really matter that much, I could perhaps get an iPad + keyboard at some point in the future for the other 20% of my use cases, which is when I like something ultra portable to bang out some work or writing while on the go. I'd assume that having an MBP 16" + iPad w/ keyboard would offer a lot more versatility than just having an M1 Air. Conversely, if I got the M1 Air, I'd probably have way less incentives to get an iPad down the line (for better or for worse - less versatility but also way more minimalistic and helps to keep my carry-on backpack weight lower).

Overall, I'm leaning more towards the MBP 16" for that sweet screen real estate, brightness, and also superior webcam. But I wanted to hear out any other perspectives on making this choice.

    Any thoughts much appreciated!

    16'' M1 Pro with 16GB or 16'' M1 Max with 32GB

    Posted: 16 Nov 2021 06:57 AM PST

Hi everyone. I want to buy a new Mac. In my country, only these 2 are availabe right away with no wait (for 16 inch versions). I mostly code, have 2 mid sized blogs, and I know 16 GB should be enough, but this is a big purchase for me, and I don't want to make a mistake. I'd also love to learn Davinci Resolve as I love video editing, and I am in the process of creating a new youtube channel. As I don't see myself getting another MB in the nest 5 years, the question of future proofing also comes into play. What do you think? Thank you.

MacBooks air 2020 - overheat like pros?

    Posted: 16 Nov 2021 06:26 AM PST

My MacBook Pro 2020 just broke on me after a year 🙄and won't be done for like 2 weeks, so I need a quick replacement while I wait. Wondering - do the 2020 Airs do the same overheating thing that the Pros do? Anyone have thoughts? Or is it worth it just to upgrade to the 14-inch 2021 M1 version? I use this for working from home and basically everything in life, with a lot of video calls too. Thanks!

Have you used a third-party magnetic usb-c adapter ? What was your experience like?

    Posted: 16 Nov 2021 04:48 AM PST

Have you used a third-party magnetic to usb-c adapter (ex. https://www.amazon.ca/Magnetic-Adapter-Connector-Transfer-Compatible/dp/B07TT6NGBC)? What was your experience like?

I need to update my laptop. I currently have an old Macbook Pro with magsafe charging cord and I love the magsafe connector. I work with kids and the magsafe connector has saved my computer from being pulled off my desk so many times. I know the new Macbook Pro has a magsafe charger but it is definitely more computer than I need, plus it's more than I was wanting to spend. I'm thinking of getting a Macbook Air and using an adapter to make the usb-c charging magsafe.

Is MacBook Air M1 is more durable for its ventless design than MacBook M1 Pro?

    Posted: 16 Nov 2021 12:57 AM PST

I live in a dusty environment. I will use my laptop in sofa, in bed, and bring it with me in my bag wherever I go. So is there any possibility to reduce MacBook Pro's lifetime due to fan suck dust in it? Want to hear your opinion.

The New Hinge: An underreported 2021 MacBook Pro Feature

    Posted: 15 Nov 2021 12:50 PM PST

    Hi all,

    I upgraded from the 2019 Intel 16' MacBook Pro to the 2021 M1 Max 16' MacBook Pro. I have a lot of thoughts on the new machine, but noticed there was a lack of reporting on a nifty new hardware feature Apple has come up with for these new 2021 MacBook Pros;

The hinge on the new MacBook Pro has been redesigned to accommodate clamshell mode better.

In the old 2019 Intel MacBook Pros, the hinge would cover the rear exhaust vents completely when shut, forcing hot air to travel downwards. This setup caused accelerated overheating when in clamshell mode and on a flat surface like a table.

This also meant that the hinge would cover the vents when the MacBook was open, ejecting the hot air back and away from the device while in use.

I believe the old MacBook Pro's hinge was designed this way because the engineers felt that hot air should be blown as far away from users hands as possible, even if that meant reduced device performance (and ironically, a hotter device meant sweatier hands anyway).

This hinge design has been completely overhauled in the 2021 MacBook Pros. In the new version, the rear exhaust vents are visible even when completely shut. This means hot air is ejected back and away from the device even when in clamshell and flat on a table.

When the new 2021 MacBook Pro is opened, the clever new hinge rotates to expose the vents towards the top screen. This makes the vents visible when looking at the MacBook Pro from a top-down eagle-eye angle. This design should promote better cooling than the old "back and away" venting style because hot air tends to rise and a vertical venting solution is able to expel more heat than a horizontal cooling solution.

However, this new hinge does significantly change the characteristics of the new 2021 MacBook Pros, specifically in the way it looks and feels. When picking up the 2021 MacBook Pros, the larger side vents along with the new rear hinge means 3/4 of the computers sides have sharp edges when picking it up or holding it. The hinge redesign also comes as a slight surprise as I have personally noticed Apple tries to keep my M1 Max MacBook Pro at 0 rpm fan speeds as much as possible, even when the device starts to get slightly warm. However, as many pros on this very subreddit have been clamouring for, I am excited to see revamped and buffed cooling systems for the new computers.

Tl;dr - 2021 MacBook Pros have a new redesigned hinge system compared to the 2019 Intel models which seem to promote better cooling.

    Help about battery health

    Posted: 15 Nov 2021 09:17 PM PST

I bought a macbook m1 air 2020 on 23rd august, 2021. (its been less than 3 months) I checked my battery health today and found out its 97%. I try to maintain a good battery health but why did it deteriorate so fast? What to do help

Is it inherently bad to exclusively fast charge?

    Posted: 15 Nov 2021 08:17 PM PST

The reason I ask is because I've been only fast charging my iPhone for like 5 months now and the battery health has dropped 9% since then. However, I do let it heat up a lot when doing this and it stays at high battery % most of the time and these factors definitely also contribute to that.

If I use a charge limiter to cap my MacBook battery at like 70% and don't let the battery get too hot when charging, will fast charging still wear down the battery faster than normal charging?

    Need advice/help (buying)

    Posted: 15 Nov 2021 08:11 PM PST

So I'm thinking of buying a new MacBook air M1 and I can't decide which one is better between these 2 options. I'll be using it for video editing/design purposes (fcpx, photoshoot, affinity designer/cinema 4d).

    • MacBook air M1 16Gb RAM and 256GB SSD
    • MacBook air M1 8GB RAM and 512GB SSD

I know a MacBook pro will probably be better but that'd be too expensive for me right now.

    I'm currently using a MacBook pro 2012 2.5 GHz (16Gb and 512 Gb SSD)

    Thank you for your help.

External Monitor question with the new MBPs

    Posted: 15 Nov 2021 08:04 PM PST

Question about external monitors with new MBPs

Hey all! I hope this isn't a dumb question. I've been rocking a 27" iMac for a few years and a 2012 MBP that has been on life support for a while… FINALLY upgrading and getting a new laptop (I travel a lot and can't get by with just a desktop).

My new MBP will be way faster than my iMac, so I'm thinking about selling it to buy a monitor because the screen real estate is very nice. (I do lots of video editing, some light photo/graphics/web work).

I'm trying to figure out which 16" MBP to get. My question is: will I have different performance with an external monitor with the M1 Pro vs Max, or my RAM/Processor configuration?

I don't have much experience running a MBP to external monitors for serious video editing work, only for basic church Pro Presenter stuff hooked up to TVs/projectors/etc.

Also if you've got any monitor recs please let me know! I know nothing haha.
