Got my dad a 2012 MacBook Pro retina 15 and want to upgrade the SSD and ram…

    Posted: 07 Nov 2021 08:46 PM PST

I was given a 2012 MacBook Pro retina 15.4 with 16 gb ram and a 480 SSD. Best computer I ever had so far, so I bought my dad one. I ordered him the same one I have, except it looks like his has only 8gb ram. I have some soldering experience and will try it on some other stuff before attempting to soldier the 16 in , since this is my only option. Maybe it'll be fast enough with the 2tb Sata id like to get him , which brings me to my next question- has anyone had any experience here with the MacBook Pro sata ngff to 2880 m.2 adapter in the MacBook, id like to have two m.2s, one that contains the os, the other that contains the files

    Macbook Air M1 or Pro 13" M1?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2021 08:36 PM PST

Help! I couldn't decide which one should I buy. I know that Air M1 is the best laptop for like 90% of the people but I'm just worried about it being fanless. I just want to confirm if it is also the better laptop for me given my specific needs.

I'm planning to use this as my primary work and grad school laptop so I expect to use this around 12 hours per day, 5 days a week. For grad school, I usually just use zoom, email, and MS office apps. For work, aside from teleconference calls (zoom/teams), email, and MS office apps, I do some data science work (R, Python, and really big Excel spreadsheets). It's not really heavy coding stuff like machine learning but it's pretty significant. In my current Windows laptop (Ryzen 5, 12 GB RAM), whenever I run my codes or open the really big Excel files, the fans would just turn on like a jet engine so I'm worried if the Macbook Air can handle it. Btw, whichever model I get, I would upgrade to 16 GB RAM. Also, budget isn't really an issue. I just want to make sure I'm buying the model that's worth the price since this will be my first Macbook.

Setting up a new 2021 Macbook Pro now - what security measures should I take?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2021 06:58 PM PST

I'm very computer savvy but not privacy/security savvy. I'm mainly thinking about:

    • Is 'Little Snitch' still recommended to monitor network?

    • Chrome - what security extensions are worthwhile?

    • Are VPNs recommended on Mac?

    • Should I use multiple logins - one for home use, and one for work?

Any thing else you think I should consider!

Tried updating from 11.0 to the latest. It's been like this for a day, and this sound has happened twice and lasted about twenty seconds. What is going on? My dad and I will use an external hard drive to try and get it on a working OS again today

Odd new M1 max MacBook charging behavior

    Posted: 07 Nov 2021 05:20 PM PST

I've done some searching but can't find my exact issue, if it even is an issue. When my new M1 max MacBook is powered off and I plug it in, the MagSafe will glow orange and the charging sound will be heard, then it will immediately turn off and then a few moments later, glow orange and make the charging sound again. It will continue to do this until I turn it on. If it is powered on or lid is closed and sleeping, it stays orange and continues to charge. I've seen a few posts that a cable to the battery can be unplugged and plugged in, but that seems to be charging under all scenarios. My MacBook charges fine and I only see this behavior if I turn it off and wait a while before reconnecting the MagSafe. Also, if I power it down with the MagSafe still in, it stays illuminated. Any idea on what this is or why it happens?

Macbook Air M1 (2020) Causes issues when connected to a adapter.

    Posted: 07 Nov 2021 10:44 PM PST

I recently purchased a Macbook Air M1 (2020 Model). Everything is fine with the notebook but the moment I connect an adapter for connecting an external display, the problem starts. - The touch id stops working. - When I put the mac to sleep at night and then the next morning, at least 30% of the battery would have drained while connected to the external monitor (also turned off at night) via the adapter. I checked by disconnecting the adapter, then the mac does fine by draining ~ 2% battery.

Is this the case when used an adapter or this only happens when used with 3rd party adapters? Please do let me know your experience and any solution if you've found.

How can I change the thermal paste of an old MacBook Pro 15 from 2011?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2021 07:11 PM PST

I'm being upgrading my old MacBook to give it new life, so far I have replaced the old drive with an SSD with a fresh install and its working well, I got some extra RAM ready to install, but I want to change the thermal paste cuz it gets extremely hot in short amount of time, it never got a thermal paste change before since I first got it in like 2011, so its about time I change it.

Problem is, I don't know how to start, what thermal paste should I use? Can I use any paste? if so what's currently the best one in the market? If I can only use a specific thermal paste, which one should I get?

I also need to change the thermal paste for a Nintendo Switch so I'm hoping I can get to kill 2 birds with 1 stone if I only have to buy 1 kind of thermal paste.

I'm completely new on the topic of thermal paste if you have not noticed, this is why I'm asking for help and hoping to get an updated answer rather than looking at a old site for info.

    MacBook Air quality control

    Posted: 07 Nov 2021 03:03 PM PST

I just purchased my first MacBook ever a few days ago, a M1 MacBook Air. Usually I hold my laptop on my lap and if I want to move it around I use it with the lid open and grab it by the side with my left hand. However, I have noticed that, while holding it with my left hand (the thumb on the top and the palm of my hand on the base of the laptop) there is sort of like a movement type feeling, I don't know how to explain it, like the metal shell of the backplate hits something in the interior, sort of like holding a plastic laptop and the plastic would bend a bit from your fingers.

I was curious so I tried to push my fingers gently on the backplate and there is a soft noise coming of from the left side of the trackpad, the rest of the laptop is solid and doesn't "move". However, this sounds like there is a hollow space and the metal bends and touches some internal components or I don't really know how to explain.

I don't know if this is normal. I've owned a few laptops before but they were plastic and it was normal for it to bend and flex while applying force. But I didn't expect this from an Apple product. I am freaking out right now!

The laptop is brand new from the Apple shop, I checked all screws and everything is in mint condition.

Did Apple fix the USB-C hub bricking M1 MBs issue?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2021 12:52 PM PST

I'm looking for a USB-C hub for my M1 MBP but upon researching I read about certain USB-C hubs completely bricking M1 MacBooks both Pro and Air. It seems to happen when charging through the USB-C hub. That's a very scary thing to happen and I'm very concerned.

I've read on Reddit that the issue has been fixed but can anyone confirm this? How has your experience been using USB-C hubs? Any recommendations?

    Thanks!

Should I get a new laptop?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2021 03:06 PM PST

A few times 2 months ago my laptop screen got weird. It turned to like a broken tv screen with different colors Today it actually turned off randomly. Then when I pressed the power button it showed that it needed a charge. Its at 50% though, it turned on after I pressed on

Does it sound like I need a new laptop? Besides this I don't have any issues but im worried... especially cuz I need it for school

Monterey Apple Book Issue → No Continuous Scrolling?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2021 02:22 PM PST

I checked their tutorial, and they said there should be an option under Aa to toggle this feature on for Apple Books, but when I clicked Book→view, they didn't have this feature, nor did Aa show continuous scrolling? The page-flip reading is really irritating. Help please?

Advice on trading MacBook Pro 2018

    Posted: 07 Nov 2021 11:47 AM PST

    Hey guys,

    So I'm considering trading in my MacBook Pro 13' (2018) i7, 16GB , 512GB storage for a MacBook Air (2020) M1, 16GB, 512Gb.

I think the move is an upgrade for me, since all I did in the Pro (light and occasional video editing and podcast recording) I will be doing more efficiently in the Air.

    What do you guys think?

Also, the Air is the CPU 8 Core and GPU 8 Core.

    Thanks!

OneDrive for MacBook - files OnDemond?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2021 01:50 AM PST

Hi, a question for MacBook OneDrive users.

As in Windows, OneDrive only downloads a "list" of files that are in the cloud (saving disk space - treating files as "on demand") or, as it used to be, you have to download the whole thing to the disk?

The question is important when I have more than 1TB data on OneDrive, and a SSD, for example, 512GB in a MacBook, and I want to have access to all of them without having to download them.

I will be grateful for the answer / hint - when I am switching to MacBook :)

M1 Max Beachballs When Opening Anything

    Posted: 07 Nov 2021 09:16 AM PST

Basically what the title says. Any app… finder, system preferences, safari. They all bounce in the dock and beach ball but never load.

Mac was working fine yesterday… suddenly nothing opens.

In safe mode it works fine and apps open right up. I suppose I need to reinstall the OS but does anyone have any ideas before I do that? I did notice an OS update which I just finished but the issue persists.

    Thanks in advance.

Did Apple bait me with their new M1 Pro chip?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2021 06:11 PM PST

This is my first time using a Mac. I switched from my Windows laptop to Mac.

I have downloaded Minecraft on MacOS. And I opened up a world. Guess what FPS I'm guessing after all the hype about the GPU. 30 FPS. That's right, I'm getting 30 FPS on default settings. What am I doing wrong? Am I the only one?

To the owners of M1 macbook air, what's your battery health percentage?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2021 09:31 AM PST

Okay so I got mines in around December ending last year. The battery health percentage has deteriorated to 96%. I am afraid that's not a good sign. So just wanted to know what's the battery health in your macbooks preferrably purchased around the same time (Dec 2020 - Jan 2021)

    long sessions effects on battery

    Posted: 07 Nov 2021 04:48 AM PST

    Hello,

    1. I'd like to ask how much will affect my MBP battery if I use it on cable for longer periods (5-10 hours)
    2. Is there any way to "disable" the battery during these sessions?
    3. Will it affect the battery if it's already at 100%? (I think/hope since it's already full, it will consume directly the cable power...)

The only thing I know for sure, it's that using it while it's charging it's definitely a "not go".
