[MOD POLL] Hey r/Apple, let's huddle up. Tell us what the sub's next steps should be

    Posted: 08 Aug 2021 06:40 PM PDT

I don't even know how to start this one. Tensions in the sub are still high, people are rightfully upset, there a lot of unanswered questions and much, much, much more.

With the "news week" coming up, we fear that the situation can get worse, so we are trying to get ahead of the curve.

    Here's what we are thinking:

We could provide daily megathreads for discussion and questions regarding CSAM. We would, however, reserve the right to approve interesting/high quality posts. We will definitely be strict on this end to make sure we keep a low amount of CSAM-related posts.

This will allow discussions to be more centralized, and let other topics have more room to breathe.

The other choice would be to keep it as is. Just take a look at the sub right now.

Please vote below on what we should do. This isn't an emergency, unlike the previous poll, so we will give the sub about 16 hours to vote. Poll will run until tomorrow at 1PM EDT.

    PLACE YOUR VOTES HERE

    Bought my first PC today.

    Posted: 08 Aug 2021 09:55 AM PDT

I know this will get downvoted to hell, because it's the Apple sub, but I need to vent how disappointed I am in Apple.

I got my first Mac Book Pro in 2005 and have been a huge Apple fan ever since.

I have been waiting for the next 16" to be released to get my next Mac (really hoping for that mag safe to return). Same with the iPhone 13 Pro. I've spent close to $30k on Apple products in my lifetime.

Today I'm spending $4k+ on a custom built PC and it's going to be a huge pain to transition to PC, learn windows or Linux, etc. but I feel that I must.

Apple tricked us into believing that their platform is safe, private, and secure. Privacy is a huge issue for me; as a victim of CP, I believe very strongly in fighting CP — but this is just not the way.

I've worked in software and there will be so many false positives. There always are.

So I'm done. I'm not paying a premium price for iCloud & Apple devices just to be spied on.

I don't care how it works, every system is eventually flawed and encryption only works until it's decrypted.

Best of luck to you, Apple. I hope you change your mind. This is invasive. This isn't ok.

Edit: You all are welcome to hate on me, call me reactive, tell me it's a poorly thought out decision. You're welcome to call me stupid or a moron, but please leave me alone when it comes to calling me a liar because I said I'm a CP victim. I've had a lot of therapy for c-ptsd, but being told that I'm making it up hurts me in a way that I can't even convey. Please just… leave it alone.

“The screeching voice of the minority” was the line

    Posted: 08 Aug 2021 02:11 PM PDT

It's clear that there is significant concern around the apparatus that Apple is implementing to fight child porn and exploitation. There are absolutely legitimate concerns around the potential for this system to be abused by oppressive regimes from around the world.

This conversation needs to happen. For me, the line from the letter congratulating Team Apple and telling them to ignore the "screeching voice of the minority" was where Apple lost me in this battle until they can provide absolute guarantees that this CAN NEVER BE ABUSED… EVER.

That line told me that there is no interest in having this conversation. At all. Organizations that will benefit from this have zero interest in ensuring privacy for everyone else, including those that could be political targets in certain regions of the world.

The apparatus that Apple has built uses "for the children" as an excuse to build the framework, but that framework can absolutely be adapted. If anyone thinks that Apple wouldn't roll over if told "you will scan for these images in China or we won't allow you to sell here", remember this. Apple boasted just a couple of years ago that "what happens on your iPhone stays on your iPhone" and this week seems to have amended that with, "well, except where we make exceptions."

This won't be the end of intrusion. I hate child exploitation as much as anyone, but I also hate the potential for governments to attack, for example, those with LBGT imagery or unpalatable political imagery" on these same devices.

Yes, TODAY, the database is CSAM, but tomorrow, it could be something else. That is the danger here and why we need to push Apple to rethink this direction or make ironclad guarantees that the worst CAN'T happen, but I don't think the latter is possible.

How other governments can abuse CSAM

    Posted: 08 Aug 2021 06:33 AM PDT

After reading on the technical details of this technology, here are a few examples that worries me:

    1. China can add a bunch of pictures of Tianamen square massacre in its database of hashes to be screened by Apple. Whoever has that picture on their phone will be detected and reported (if they forget to turn off iCloud which is on by default). This gives government even more powerful tools than having access to all your iCloud photos, because they will be alerted if there's a match. Normally I don't think government will look into all citizens' photo

    2. This technology can extend to audio files or documents on your phone. Apple can say they don't read or hear the document, just generate a hash signature of them.

    3. Apple said it can only see photos if it passes a certain matching threshold but this threshold is controlled solely by Apple. If it decides to lower the threshold to zero, all photos will become visible to them. This is a backdoor to bypass encryption and will surely be exploited.

    4. Hashes of known illegal images are stored on devices. So it a device get hacked or jailbroken, someone can technically modify this list.

    5. Ambiguity of jurisdiction: if this is applicable to the U.S., then who are subject to this law? Is it based on the device serial number (sold in US market), or based on iCloud details registration, or location of the phone, or user nationality? If a Russian visits the U.S. with a matching photo, will he be reported? This can create a lot of confusion

    6. Most importantly, this creates a precedence. Knowing Apple can do this, government will surely ask for more.

Please share your thoughts or let me know if my understanding is incorrect

I'll Never forget that Super Mario Run reveal.

    Posted: 08 Aug 2021 09:42 PM PDT

Almost five years later and it still gives me goosebumps rewatching that Apple Keynote from September. At that time I was just getting into watching these Keynotes live to the point where it's practically become a tradition now for me. Even during the year when the Apple Watch and iPhone 6 Plus were announced. Since then I've never missed one at all to this very day.

Between that keynote and the beginning of the September 2016 keynote, I don't think ANY of us were prepared to ever see Mario actually appear in anything Apple related, much less seeing Nintendo and Miyamoto himself on stage announcing it.

For me, that continued to be one of the most memorable moments in any keynote, I remembered snapping awake -- since this was streamed at 12 in the afternoon for me and I was still not much of a morning person -- and being so caught off guard at this bombshell... I was pretty much awake for the rest of that keynote.

How to manage photos without iCloud.

    Posted: 08 Aug 2021 01:19 PM PDT

I'm slowly disabling apps from iCloud with the eventual goal of not backing up anything to Apple's cloud. I have a macbook pro, iPhone and iPad. I don't need to manage photos on the iPad. I appreciate any help thinking through the following:

    1. If I disable photos backup to iCloud on my iPhone, will I lose any photos right away? Doesn't Apple keep only a portion on the handset to save space? Will those photos download to my handset or stay in the cloud?

    2. I download all originals to my Mac and want to manage photos there. I assume I can just disable cloud backups and everything will stay on my Mac as it is now?

    3. After I've disabled iCloud photo backups on both phone and Mac, how do I sync photos from my phone to Mac photos library? I do local itunes backups, but I want to add my iphone photos to my mac photo library as I take photos. Will the two photo libraries sync when I sync with iTunes? And can I delete photos off my phone to save space without affecting my Macbook photos library?

Appreciate any insight anyone can offer. It's been a long time since I managed all of this without iCloud.

Apple Asking For More iOS 15 Beta Testers

    Posted: 08 Aug 2021 04:16 PM PDT

In 2020, Facebook reported 20,307,216 incidents of CSAM on their servers. Apple only reported 265.

    Posted: 08 Aug 2021 11:41 AM PDT

    Source: https://www.missingkids.org/content/dam/missingkids/gethelp/2020-reports-by-esp.pdf

This post isn't about the privacy implications of CSAM, I wanted to simply highlight the massive difference between how many of these incidents are reported by internet companies.

The issue of child abuse is something that we can't turn a blind eye to and the reality is that vulnerable people are getting harmed using American tech. Because of that, the US government mandates that every internet company on its soil scan content on their servers for CSAM. And in 2020, Apple reported only 265 incidents. This is insanely low for a company this large and it really shows that a LOT of this gets ignored on Apple servers. Apple simply isn't looking very hard right now and this is understandably a problem they're trying to solve, unless they want to get in shit with the government again.

Personally, I think this feature only makes sense if they're going to later make iCloud fully end to end encrypted. This feature seems to me like it removes one major blocker for e2e encryption. It's a hard ask to implement e2e on the server and just ignore abusive content, especially when tech companies are under lots of scrutiny right now in the US. I also think they could have avoided this whole PR nightmare if they announced e2e encryption at the same time.

    Let’s discuss Apple’s AI monitoring children’s messages

    Posted: 08 Aug 2021 11:01 AM PDT

    • If you're below 13. The child's parents will get a notification if the AI determine that a inappropriate picture was sent/received.
    • If you're between 13-17. The child's parents will not get a notification. The child will get a notification that the AI determines it as inappropriate .

    https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2021/08/apples-plan-think-different-about-encryption-opens-backdoor-your-private-life

This is not hashing, who's will use AI to determine if the picture is OK.

So every picture sent from/to a below 18 year old will be analyzed by Apple's AI. Apple will not be notified.

    Example:

    • If your daughter send you a picture of your dog. Scanned and analyzed by AI -> OK from AI
    • Your 17 year old send a sexual picture to their partner. Flagged by AI as not OK and recipient/sender notified (not parents)

    To discuss:

    • Is this a violation in privacy?

    • Does it make it less violation in privacy if Apple does not get notified?

    • Do you think this is worse then iCloud photo hashing?

    • Since it's the parents that need to activate this, does it make it OK from a privacy point of view?

iPhone vs dedicated camera for photography

    Posted: 08 Aug 2021 10:21 PM PDT

Curious what camera you use and why. Are you just a professional photographer or is it a hobby? Do you do it for quality and privacy?

Lots of people are mad at Apple recent privacy decisions and are threatening to switch platforms to Android/Samsung/Windows and still plan on using their respective cloud services for photos.

Wouldn't the best choice be to use a dedicated camera to take photos and use local storage (SD cards, external hard drives/SSD)? I don't think many of them realize just setting to Google Drive or using Samsung Galaxy phone is setting themselves for even greater privacy risks.

14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros Finally Enter Mass Production

    Posted: 09 Aug 2021 02:21 AM PDT

Here's my question about this fiasco. If all the detection is supposedly done on the phone, does that mean apple will constantly be downloading hashes to your phone?

    Posted: 08 Aug 2021 10:56 AM PDT

Or will they be using your data to send the hash to their database? I'm also wondering where the AI plays into this. If all it's doing is comparing hashes, why the need for an AI?
