Apple TV 4K buying recommendations needed for my setup

    Posted: 23 Jul 2021 02:09 AM PDT

    I have the following

    1. Samsung 4K TV UE43NU7199
    2. Denon DHTS 216 soundbar
    3. FireTV stick 4K
    4. PS4

I have connected TV and sound bar via optical cable.

I want to buy Apple TV 4K (while i am still tying ti figure out the advantages over FireTV stick)

I have Airpods pro and I read that it could connect with Apple TV.

    I have following questions:

    1. Anyone did the Upgrade path from FireTV stick 4K to AppleTV 4K? Did you see any advantages?
    2. Does the Airpod pro connect seamlessly to Apple TV ?
    3. Does Spatial audio works?
    4. The sound bar I have Dolby Audio and DTS and wondering if Soundbar connected to TV can also benefit Dolby from Apple TV?

    Thank you in advance.

cannot set up 4th gen ATV - issues connecting using iPhone screen prompts, control center app, and apple remote

    Posted: 22 Jul 2021 11:20 PM PDT

I restored a used Apple TV (2018) from recovery mode through iTunes. Things I tried:

    1. When attempting setup, my phone connected to the Apple TV a few times and I received screen prompts on my phone. I made it through the language screen but got stuck on the Data and Privacy screen with no further screen prompts to allow me to continue. I rebooted my ATV several times by pulling the power plug and also rebooted my iPhone a few times too. The connection was also iffy - sometimes it would connect and I could get those screen prompts, and other times not.
    2. Apple remote in iPhone control center. I have an up-to-date iPhone 7. It successfully connected to our other TV that has Apple TV but it did not display the one I was setting up. I tried the solution in this post by connecting my Apple TV to Ethernet and trying the control center remote again, but it did not work. I had my phone and ATV connected to the same network.
    3. Remote: I unpaired (holding Menu + Down volume) the Apple TV remote from our other Apple TV and attempted to re-pair it to my new device (Menu + Volume down). Nothing appeared on the screen of my monitor (it was just showing the plain "choose your language" page at the beginning of set-up) but every time I pushed a button on the remote a light blinked once on the ATV. But nothing happened.

I've rebooted many times, reinstalled from iTunes 3 times, and tried just about everything else I could think of. Any other troubleshooting tips would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

SOLVED -- Apple TV tvOS 15 beta not working with Bose Soundbar 300

    Posted: 22 Jul 2021 10:13 PM PDT

If you signed up for betas on your Apple TV 4K and your Bose Soundbar 300 stopped working, then all you need to do is go to Settings -> Remotes and Devices -> Home Theatre Control -> Set Volume Control to OFF (default is Auto). Then if you have HDMI-CEC enabled on your TV, the Apple TV will automatically (ironically) work.

This is response to this thread -> (1) Bose Soundbar and Apple TV remote : appletv (reddit.com)

Just set up, what are the "Must See!" shows?

    Posted: 22 Jul 2021 11:51 PM PDT

Just got in on the Playstation 5 6 months free deal. Watched an episode of Tiny World, beautiful show. Tried to watch Schmigadoon and it was entirely too cringey to watch (you can have a Victorian morality or be multicultural, you can't be both. Pick one!)

What are the other things worth watching until 1/22/22? ;)

    See looks promising.
Foundation is on my list, but it's 2 months away.
What's this "Invasion"? Sam Neill is usually good.

Can you access your iTunes library with AppleTV? Or only apple music?

    Posted: 22 Jul 2021 11:44 PM PDT

I still just use my iTunes library and choose Spotify for my streaming. I do use iTunes for my legacy MP3 collection tho. Can I use AppleTV to access it? Or only Apple Music?

Why does Apple TV release new episodes for shows every Friday?

    Posted: 23 Jul 2021 04:32 AM PDT

It's not like Apple TV has an actual cable channel to premiere their few originals on, so it doesn't make sense not to give us the whole season at a time. The only other reason I can see why they're doing this is to keep people coming back every week, but that doesn't seem like a good strategy for now. They don't have that many Apple originals, so it's not hard to browse through everything and already know what you want to see, and it causes a greater demand for the content you do like. They also don't release new content often enough for that to be helpful. Making people wait at this stage just seems kind of pointless to me, and might cause people to give up on a show.

I do really love the shows I'm watching and waiting for every week, I just don't see much of a point in waiting. If anyone has another explanation for this, please tell me.

MSNBC app update bugs - cuts to black / no sound for a couple seconds every 10 minutes or so and other bugs

    Posted: 22 Jul 2021 06:10 PM PDT

Anyone noticing any bugs in the recently updated MSNBC app? For me the video/audio cuts out for a couple seconds every 10 minutes or so.

Also there are now way too many clicks to turn captions on/off, and it seems like a non-standard UI to get to this setting. Should be just swipe down and see the option. Instead I have to swipe a couple times and see some "speech bubble" UI element and click that and then swipe right and finally I see captions settings. Dismissing this leaves the bottom quarter of the display permanently darkened unless I leave the app and return.

    This is not an improvement.

Wifi connection fine but not able to stream

    Posted: 22 Jul 2021 05:53 PM PDT

I have a first gen 4k ATV, about 2 years old. Two days ago, I power up the TV/device, and cannot stream anything. The device still shows 5 bar strength connection to WIFI , but I can't stream on any app (they time out, tell me to check my internet connection), and the normal display of ads at the top of the home page is blank. I've rebooted the device, unplugged it, restarted both my modem and my router, to no avail. All my other household devices have no issues with the WIFI.

    Any other suggestions?

(Oh, and I did try resetting to factory default, but it apparently tried to connect to the internet for that, which failed.)

Disney+ still not offering Atmos through the Homepods (confirmed to me by Disney+ tech support)

    Posted: 22 Jul 2021 07:12 AM PDT

Its July 2021, and still we get no Atmos from the Disney+app when the homepods are set as the default audio output of the Apple TV 4K. Its limited to 5.1, and also the overall volume and the dynamic range is inferior to Netflix, Amazon, or Apple TV app.

Disney says that due to the fact that they use a custom A/V player and not the native tvOS player, this is harder to implement. They are still looking into it but there is no ETA at all.

This is absolutely not acceptable. If those of you who have social media don´t mind to do so, please ask Disney+ for this feature.

Streaming Olympics, what should I Do?

    Posted: 22 Jul 2021 05:39 PM PDT

I do not have cable. The only streaming services I have are Hulu and Netflix.

If I wanted to stream as much Olympics as I possibly can, what should I do?

NBC seems to spread their streams all over. So a free tier of Peacock. Then should I also ad Sling Blue, Youtube Live, Hulu Live? Trying to make this as easy as possible to stream on my Apple TV.

I have done VPNs on my MacBook, then airplanes to TV, but that's too much effort. Hoping to put for a single service to make the next few weeks super easy.

Speech suddenly soft, music suddenly loud?

    Posted: 22 Jul 2021 05:52 AM PDT

Does anyone else have the same experience as me?

It seems that in the past…. few days?…. the balance on my AppleTV has changed.

Speech (vocals, centre speaker) is strangely muted, and whenever there's a blast of background music - scene change for example - it is LOUD.

I am quite certain I have changed nothing. Speakers are the same. It's just…. weird and irritating as I'm constantly jumping for the volume control. This has not been a problem for the whole two years I've owned the AppleTV4K with this sound system (a soundbar.)

    Anyone have any idea?

Can I disable the TV app's autoplaying trailers?/What's a good 3rd party YouTube app?

    Posted: 22 Jul 2021 08:13 AM PDT

Am I able to completely and totally for the rest of all time disable the autoplaying trailers in the TV? Congrats if you like them, but I don't like them and I feel like there has to be a toggle somewhere.

(I'd much rather not have to scroll through all that extra stuff just to read the synopsis either if possible)

I didn't want to make a new thread just for this but I was wondering if anyone know of a decent 3rd party YouTube app? The one from YouTube keeps begging me to login which is annoying, and the surveys are annoying too. Great if you want to login, but I don't want to hence my question.

Getting movie files to my AppleTV

    Posted: 22 Jul 2021 07:01 AM PDT

Basically I have movie files that were converted off of DVDs that I want to be able to load on to my AppleTV for when I travel.

So the big issue here is that my iMac is a bit older, so it does not run the Catalina OS, so I don't have the AppleTV app on my desktop/media server. When I'm at home, it's not a big deal because of Home Sharing.

Used, first gen 4k vs new 2nd gen 4k?

    Posted: 22 Jul 2021 04:13 AM PDT

Sorry if this has been beaten to death.

I recently upgraded to a much larger, 4K TV from my 10 year old 1080 TV. It's a Vizio with smart cast, and I am able to access 4K content, but I've never been a fan of built-in smart TV apps. I've had an A1625 Apple TV since its release and it has been a great box, so I want to upgrade to one of its 4K counterparts.

I can buy a used first gen 4K unit for around $100 on ebay/FB marketplace, or just buy a new 2nd gen at retail. I do like the upgraded remote, but I never really hated the original, so it's not a deal breaker.

Are the higher frame rate HDR streaming capabilities worth the extra $100 for my streaming purposes? It's not a full-blown home theater setup, just casual streaming, and in 4K if the content is available. I also watch a lot of hockey, but that's normally through Hulu Live or NHLTV. I'm not sure if the improved frame rate capabilities are worth twice the price if the available content is sparse. Also not sure if the $100 is a sort of future proofing tax.
