How much do dynamic wallpapers affect battery life? (on MBA m1)

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 10:49 PM PDT

I have a 13" 2020 MacBook Air M1 and was wondering whether using a dynamic wallpaper would impact my battery life. Is it significant? Does it even affect it? (I'm assuming it does)

Should I start to use normal wallpapers, rather than dynamic ones?

MacBook Pro that was given to me as a gift by my company has all kinds of issues. How much value might it have if I were to sell it?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 11:05 PM PDT

I left my full time position and was given a new role with my company as a contractor, so they gave me my work laptop as a gift to continue working for them. It's a 13" model, with a 128GB SSD and it's from 2017.

I believe it was ordered as a refurbished machine, but I don't know who else in the company may have used it before me or how long they owned it. I recall that it was given to me as my work computer around the fall of 2019, where I had absolutely no issues with it for at least a year. When it officially became "mine" at the start of this year, I restored it and updated it to the latest OS (I am pretty sure the OS previously on it was Catalina and I updated it to Big Sur). That's when all the issues started happening.

First, I started encountering a problem where the keys would double-type certain letters. It never used to do this previously, so I thought it was odd. I looked up the issue and apparently it happens as a result of a defect that applies to the model I have. I spoke with Apple and they confirmed that because it was a known defect, I could take it in to get it fixed free of charge. However, right after that, my location went under lockdown and I wasn't able to go to an Apple Store for almost 3 months.

Over this time, I decided that once I was able to get the keyboard issue fixed I would sell the laptop and put the money towards buying a new one. I love the shallower keys of this model (the other laptop I own is a 2015 MBP model), but the smaller drive size isn't something that will accommodate all of the things I currently need for all of my work. I'm now extremely angry because it looks like I'm not gonna get to do that now.

The other day, I had a video interview and with my luck, the audio wouldn't work on the call. Even though the night prior, I distinctly remember watching videos on the laptop and the sound on the internal speakers was working perfectly fine. I scrambled and plugged in a pair of wired earbuds for the interview (where the audio then worked fine). From this point forward, the internal speakers WILL not work on the laptop.

I have tried everything usually suggested for this and gone through all diagnostics with an Apple tech support person today (including resetting the SMC and NVRAM, sticking a toothpick in the headphone jack, making another user account, repeatedly inserting/removing a headphone jack) and nothing will work. 98% of the time, I don't use wired headphones and use Bluetooth headphones. It was only in this very rare case that I grabbed a pair of earbuds because I was on a call and thought they looked much more professional than my big Bluetooth headset. The audio also wasn't working before I used wired headphones, so I find it very odd that this would be behind it.

It doesn't end there. Last night, a very thin, vertical line suddenly appeared on the screen and now it will not go away. Every search I've run has told me that this probably means I'll have to replace the LCD screen, which isn't cheap and now I'm so upset. The Apple support guy I spoke with earlier kept saying he doesn't think the two issues are connected, but I find it very odd how both of them literally occurred within the same day and now nothing will resolve either of them.

I got a free laptop and I guess I shouldn't be complaining, but I was really hoping for it to have more value than 5 months of use. I've never dropped it, never spilled anything on it and haven't done anything out of the ordinary with it. If the screen issue and audio issue are separate things and both require extensive repair, then I feel that there's really no point in paying to do either of them if they are costly enough. I may as well just buy a new machine.

How much value could I expect to get out of it if I were to sell it as is? Apple's trade in value is saying $190, which is hundreds of dollars less than I could have gotten out of this if these two most recent issues had not literally cropped up within a day, for completely unknown reasons. Any help would be appreciated!

So a MacBook Air went missing

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 04:50 PM PDT

MacBook Air in Rose Gold stolen in a smash and grab at my house. First break in 50+ years and it was reported to the police . Funny thing is the shades on the room are always down and as far as I know, noone knew I kept it there plus I worked from home over 6 months in that room never an issue. I'm working with someone to get a court order to have Apple produce the Apple ID logged into that serial number(hopefully in my lifetime). AG has the serial number in their database.

    Weird and Random Hardrive issue

    Posted: 30 Jun 2021 12:03 AM PDT

Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask about this. Its been hard to know where post about it and ive always been curious if anyone else has experienced this.
I bought the 250gb MacBook Pro im typing on in 2012 and its still going strong.
When I took it home from the store in 2012 I quickly discovered that it had a 500gb hard drive in it instead. Bonus! At the time I thought it could maybe just be the wrong computer accidentally put in that box but everything did seem to match up. It seemed that I just got lucky and bought a computer with the wrong hardrive installed. I kept the computer and carried on. Thank You, Universe.
At some point during my warranty I had to take the computer in to the mac store to replace the battery. It had heated up and was actually bulging up the track pad a bit.
It seemed like an easy fix and the mac dude took it to the back to open it up.
Within 5 minutes he came back out and said they can fix it pretty easily but that I am unfortunately not covered under my warranty because I switched out my Hard Drive for a bigger one. I just started laughing.
No level of explanation would convince them that my MacBook came like that. A freak manufacturers mistake! Dude told me "That doesnt happen." He straight up thought I was lying. Dirty Looks and all like I was trying to scam the place. I just paid for the repair and left. It wasnt that expensive and kinda funny really.
The reason for this diatribe is that I have always wondered if this has ever happed to anyone else. Getting a Mac product with a mistakenly ungraded component like the hard drive or a more upgraded model than you purchsed.
Im also curious if the store has ever caught this and contacted someone to correct it or that you just got away with it but it affected your warranty because it was the wrong product from what was registered.
Weird and pointless question maybe but Im curious. Does this happen? Or did I win some random MacBook Hardrive lottery?
    Thanks, Dorks.

Is it normal for Safari to be always "using significant energy"?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 06:33 AM PDT

Every time I open up Safari and click on the battery icon, it says that Safari is using significant energy (without even going on a website yet). I've deleted my history and cache, but still no changes.

Edit: For 12 hr power it says 11.86

MacBook heating while doing normal tasks like editing pdfs

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 12:49 PM PDT

    Hey so I have a MacBook Air (2018, i5 7th generation processor)

I have recently noticed that the fan of the laptop kicks in very quickly during normal tasks. Like for example, I was editing a pdf in the default previewer of the Mac today. There was quite a bit of painting involved with me zooming in to the max limit and applying white paint on small areas, and my fan kicked in at full speed in about a minute. Is this behavior normal or is something wrong with my Mac? Is editing a pdf considered a graphic-intensive task which could've consumed power and thus kicked the fans?

How do I delete the ‘Other’ files in my macbook which have taken more than half of my storage.

    Keyboard stopped working

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 03:47 PM PDT

For the past three days I've woken up and my keyboard on my MacBook po would randomly not work. Its lights up, the trackpad and mouse work fine, it just refuses to type. I've tried cleaning it with canned air, and some hotkey commands apple support told me to do which did work up the last 2 days until today where it won't work at all. I purchased this laptop around this time a year ago so it isn't old, I just don't understand how it could work fine one night and the next morning it just decides not to work, which I find suspicious given I bought it a little over a year ago so now I have no warranty on it anymore. Can anyone help?

Repairing MBP 2016 vs. upgrading to M1 MBP

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 12:30 PM PDT

My MBP 2016 recently faced some hardware issues, and since it's out of the warranty period, I would have to pay for the repair fees.

However, with the release of M1 MBP, I'm thinking of upgrading to it instead as I do rely on my MBP to do video/photo editing, as well as writing assessments etc. as I'm currently still a student.

On the other hand, people around me have been telling me to wait for the second gen M1 MBP instead, and I just don't have the time to wait till the third quarter of 2021 for the new MBP release. Hence, I would much rather just pay for the repair fees first and upgrade later in the future instead.

I would love to hear some opinions, especially from users who currently use their MBP for video editing purposes, how well the M1 MBP performs and whether upgrading would be the better option. Thank you!

    MBA 256GB / 7-core GPU / 16GB ram VS MBP 256GB / 8 core GPU / 8GB ram

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 11:14 AM PDT

I was wondering what the stronger machine would be but can't find anything with this specific comparison. My question is where the MBP will still outperform the Air. and if.

    MBA 256GB / 7-core GPU / 16GB ram

    vs

    MBP 256GB / 8 core GPU / 8GB ram

Was planning to prevent it from getting that 15% slower than the PRO by using a blue gel pack under it for those intensive moments.

    What m1 for video editing?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 02:26 AM PDT

Hello, Im looking to buy a MacBook with an m1 chip. Don't need a lot of ssd so I'll go with 256. The question is, do I choose Mac book air or MacBook Pro, 8 or 16 GB ? I want to replace it with the new one releasing this or next year but can't wait any more so have to get one right now. What do you recommend for video editing in 1080p or 4K? Can you edit with only 8GB ram, does it work on the air?

Edit forgot to add that since I'll upgrade later it is not a purchase for many years, and I don't want to throw out money unnecessarily. But don't want to struggle with editing of course.

Will a cooling pad improve my MBP2011?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 09:57 AM PDT

I'm running my MBP2011 with 16GB RAM and internal SSD for a couple years now.

Only recently it gets extremely hot doing ANYTHING. I installed Intel Power Gadget to monitor the temperature and now general Safari browsing (Amazon, YouTube) pushes the temperature towards 90C quickly. Streaming other SD video pushes it towards 100C and the MBP feels and sounds like it will explode.

Will a cooling pad product drive the temperature down a bit? I've been reading mixed reviews and am curious about others' opinions, cheers.

Macbook Air 2017 A1466 battery change

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 06:18 AM PDT

Hey all, I am trying to replace my macbook air 2017 battery. It's now finally starting to decay and was looking for suggestions.

I want to buy a cheap battery with decent health remaining 90+ and with max 200 cycles which I found a lot on craigslist. However, most of those are for the A1496 model in comparison to my A1466.

Would it be an issue if I used that battery? Is my macbook air compatible with that one(A1496)?
