Decided between M1 MacBook Pro and M1 MacBook Air

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 11:14 AM PDT

I thought I would post this here in case it can help someone that is in the same situation I am/was.

I left MacBook several years ago due to the Butterfly keyboard debacle. I was actually on the front 'lines' of this issue as I had the issue early and ended up working with Apple Customer Relations for weeks... maybe months. I even had a MBP returned from the Apple Repair Depot with the 'test' still installed and running on it, including the Test profile. I am almost convinced a little Apple birdie did this to help me out. I was able to recreate the Butterfly keyboard issue in under an hour with those tests.. I then went iPad Pro for several years. My last MBP was a 2015 13" that I shouldn't have sold. Loved that thing.

Fast forward several years and I was ready to give the new keyboard and M1 chip a try. My intent was to get an M1 13" MBP with 8GB of RAM. My usage is normal usage as well as light video editing and medium Lightroom work.

I was going to go with the silver 13" MPB to 'match' the 2015 MBP I liked so much. I grabbed in in 512/8GB configuration. Within a few hours I knew 8GB wasn't enough for what I was doing. I am not worried about 'swap' issues but my memory (RAM) pressure was living in the yellow and red. That can't be good. I returned it and wanted to get the same silver in 1TB/16GB configuration but wanted to buy at an Apple Store and that configuration isn't something they stock. I waited and waited.. At the advice of the Apple Store employee I 'tried' the space gray version of the 1TB/16GB M1 MBP and it worked MUCH better with all of my uses. I won't get into it but that laptop was having some weird/glitchy issues. In addition, I don't love the Touch Bar and was really not wanting to spend that much $ so I decided to give the MBA a try in the same 1TB/16GB configuration a try.

    Loving it!!

I was concerned about the screen brightness but it's so close it's a non-issue and I am VERY picky. I am using it right now next to a window and while brightness is cranked up it's not all the way. I think using both the MBA AND MBP in bright light would be so close and have the same issue. I never go 100% in my daily use.

The keyboard feels more solid. I can't explain it.. but it just does.

Battery life is ridiculous. Whatever I lost from the MBP, I don't care as this MBA goes forever.

I don't do any 'long' processing and I cannot tell ANY difference in my use of Lightroom between the M1 MBP and MBA.

I was worried about the corner wobble. I tested for that and didn't have it. However, I am at a wooden dining room table right now and had the issue in an area of the table. I moved the MBA over a little bit and no wobble.

I 'wanted' the updated version of the 2015 13" MBP so badly .. I thought. I am SO glad I gave this M1 MBA a try as it has been amazing. Love the size, weight, and speed is crazy fast.

My least favorite thing about my M1 MacBook Air

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 12:06 AM PDT

    The USB-C cable.

Seriously, this might be my least favorite Apple cable ever. I find it strangely stiff and even though it's less than a couple months old, it's already got some hard kinks in it and it's never left the house!

Windows VM on 8gb M1 Air

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 11:05 PM PDT

When I use windows VM with parallels on my 8g ram. Everything becomes annoyingly slow, and I found the ram being almost 100% used. I tried restarting the VM but problem persists. Is it a bad idea to run VM with mere 8g ram to begin with? I have few days left to return it and wondering if 16g ram is worth the extra 200bucks. Any suggestions appreciated

    Macbook Pro issues

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 08:00 PM PDT

Okay so for context i have a macbook pro 2014, and it has had issues but never was repaired, and now it wasn't able to hold a charge properly, and would shut down randomly. So i kept it plugged in at all costs of using it for online schooling. I would keep the brightness at lowest and backlight of the keyboard off since i didn't like light when i slept, and in the morning when trying to turn it on, it just wouldn't. I did do this for a few days and didn't have any issue. now i need to fix this and idk how to, i tried troubleshooting with connecting an external display and shows it has perfect charge. what can i do now?

M1s having SSD aging quicker that usual issues?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 07:10 PM PDT

I am preparing to purchase a M1 MacBook Air and it's gonna be pricy. I've heard stuff about the M1s doing something with the ram (I heard someone call it swap) that will cause the SSD drive to age quicker. Is this a serious issue? I plan to hold onto mine for 5 years at least but would like it to last 7-10 if its possible. I plan to run Spotify and some safari tabs mostly with word or teams in at the same time as the others. Discord probably along side the others. Will that be fine?

Help with adding rows to google doc

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 03:46 PM PDT

    Hi all,

I created a table in google doc. I need to add a row. The 'insert' button on google doc only lets me add a whole new chart and not a row in the chart I already made.

I KNOW there is a way to click command and then something else to get a new menu to appear where I can add rows/ columns because I did not last week. But I cannot for the life of me remember what I clicked.

Please help im getting so trusted lol

    Thanks!

    Having trouble deciding.

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 02:59 PM PDT

Looking to get a new macbook later this year (by new I mean refurbished/used), and my budget is $600 at the max, though $550 is the amount I'll most likely have. What macbook would be recommended as a replacement laptop for an i3 5005U powered Dell from 2015?

30hz on external monitor from my MBP M1

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 02:49 PM PDT

    Hi,

I need to use my MacBook M1 with a usb hub that supports 60hz. What's the best routing option when it comes to achieve this via USB hub? I need to use a hub since I need to connect several things in my MacBook.

Already tried a usb hub from Anker but unfortunately it was only running at 30hz. What do you guys recommend me to achieve 60hz? What do you do personally to achieve this using usb hubs?

    Thanks in advance!

Can I still exchange my macbook air for diff specs?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 01:35 PM PDT

Hey, I just bought a macbook air like 4 days ago, it's been working great and I love it, but I decided to go for buying a base model (8gb ram, 256gb ssd) and also buy applecare+, over going for more ram. I noticed in activity manager that even when just having spotify open, vs code, and safari it was using 6gb of ram as well and 2gb swap. I read in another comment that using swap will age your ssd way faster than normal. I'm planning on keeping this laptop for a minimum of 5 years, considering my last laptop was 10 years old. I'm having second thoughts, and I'm wondering if it's possible to completely return my laptop and airpods (came free with education pricing) as well as applecare+ and instead opt for the 16gb and 256 gb ssd but without applecare+. Can I still do that or is it too late?

M1 Macbook Air Cursor moving erratically

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 01:33 PM PDT

I got my macbook a few months ago and I'm starting to notice that the cursor movement on this Mac is choppy instead of smooth. Sometimes, it jumps around a bit when I'm simply just moving the cursor across the screen. Any advice?

Should the MBP M1 be enough for my usage?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 10:41 AM PDT

Hey everyone! I am planing on purchasing MBP M1 8GB 256GB - this is what I can get with my budget. So I am planning using this laptop almost daily. Mainly for programming in PHP (Laravel framework) - my current workflow/setup is this: Running Ubuntu in VM with PHP and MySQL and using Visual Studio Code. Sometimes I may use Photoshop and Lightroom too, but I mainly edit photos on my iPad pro 2020.

Will 8gb ram be enough for me? I know 256 GB is not enough but I can store some things in cloud or external ssd but I cant change the RAM.

Also: What about MB Air m1 or I will need the Pro because of the fans?

Jumping from Windows laptop to MacBook, which accessories do I need?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 06:06 AM PDT

    Hi everyone

I am buying a MacBook Pro (M1) in a few days and I want to know what I need to buy besides the laptop itself. I have a mouse and a good USB headphone that I prefer to continue to use. Is that possible? Are the accessories sold in apple stores preferable to other brands? I am a student and I will probably move the laptop around a lot. What kind of skin/sleeve do you recommend?

    Thank you.

Excited to get the M1 MBA.

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 09:37 AM PDT

Hi, Friends. So I'm really, really excited to get the M1 MBA. I'm going to be upgrading from a MBP 2019 13' base model. Honestly, it's awful. It's the worst machine I've ever used. My 2015 base-model MBP lasted me since 2015 since 2019. I still use that beast today. I can't wait to upgrade. The M1 Air might be the laptop that I have been looking for since 2019. That 2015 machine was a beast, pretty much the M1 of 2015. My 2019 is awful, the cooling system is awful. On IDLE it's 40ºC, rn typing this post at 50 with the overclocking turned off. Can't wait to get it.

Please, tell me your experiences with the M1 chip in the comments below.

I'd love to read your comments!

For those wondering im getting the 256gb ssd one and adding 16gb ram. So a custom config.

I still have a 2015 MacBook Air, questions about storage

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 09:07 AM PDT

    Hi!

So I still own a early 2015 MacBook Air that is in nearly perfect conditions. I've been using it since high school and now I'm almost graduating from college, but since I've had to take a lot of online exams my computer is no longer compatible with some of the proctoring programs because it needs an update.

I feel like I'm about to get attacked for this lol, but I still have the El Capitan software on my laptop and have never updated it, mostly because I do not have enough storage. I have been trying to free up some more space but I still need 18 GB in order to update.

Do you guys think it would be best to buy a new Mac or save some money and just buy a hard drive to transfer some files. If so, what kind of hard drive do you think is best?

I plan on eventually buying a new laptop after I graduate so I would like to save for now.

Any advice is appreciated, thank you!
