Sidecar on older macs on BigSur?

    Posted: 21 May 2021 01:48 AM PDT

Hi Reddit! I remember on Mojave and Catalina there was a piece of software from Github to enable Sidecar on older macs. I used it and it worked just fine. But I cannot come across anything to enable the same feature on macOS BigSur.

    Anyone knows a way around?

Do I need to change the store?

    Posted: 21 May 2021 12:17 AM PDT

I have my account registered in one country but I bought some apps on the online App Store of a different country, all verifications have been done and now I'm just waiting for the apps to be available for me to download. When buying I did not change anything, my Apple ID stayed the same, the only difference was the address I typed in when they asked for delivery address (the delivery address had to be on the country I was buying from, but since I'm not waiting for a physical copy of anything I didn't think much of it), but no changes on my account, so everything on my App Store/iTunes is still tied to my original country. In order for me to download the apps when they get here, do I need to change my apple account address to the country I bought the apps from?

    Orphan files

    Posted: 20 May 2021 11:42 PM PDT

I developed a program that gives me complete visibility of all files on my M1 Mac(I also have one for Windows).

There are two obvious findings MacOs is overusing "hidden" features and there are a number of hidden orphan files(my M1 is only 2 months old) .

Some apps just spry files all over the place in hidden folders.

    For Example:

I don't use Garageband so I uninstalled using CleanMyMac on an assumption I can always download it from Apple Store.

My program found about 1.5GB+ of files installed by Garageband that were in hidden folders in \Library ,\System with sample music. Mov lesson....

Orphan files are the one left behind when an app is uninstalled.

I had look at my old Mac 2010 Mini there lots of them about 10 years of loading and testing different apps.

So when you install an app and then uninstall it is likely orphan files be left behind.

Apple apps are the worse offenders.

Not much we can do about it.

I just deleted the large orphan files.

MacOs doesn't have Windows Apps Uninstall we could do with one.

Average Mac user is totally unaware and doesn't care about the garbage files accumulating in hidden folders.

It does sells lots of Macs.

How to change allocation unit size to 32 kb for my SD on mac os??

    Posted: 20 May 2021 11:05 PM PDT

I am trying to format my SD card to FAT32 with an allocation unit size of 32 kb. Disk utility allows me to easily format it to FAT32, but not change the allocation unit size. How do I do this? Just looking for the basic steps for this, or if there is a software that allows this on mac.

M1: swap memory on external drive?

    Posted: 20 May 2021 03:53 PM PDT

I'm looking to buy a base model M1 Mac mini, but really wary of the ssd wear problem.

I was wondering whether booting from an external (thunderbolt) drive also means macOS will use the external drive for swap memory. Replacing an external harddrive for excessive wear in a few years really wouldn't be a problem, when compared to having the internal drive die.

    Pmset question

    Posted: 20 May 2021 09:42 PM PDT

I have a 2013 MacPro (trash can) and can't for the life of me find the exact terminal lines to change the behavior of my power management. All I want is:

macpro is off and power is dis-engaged Engage ac power via any method (plugging in, remote WiFi smart plug, etc) Mac Pro boots up automatically without me having to push a button.

If anyone has the exact terminal lines or an app that can accomplish this I would much appreciate it! I'm having a really hard time making sense of googling it and getting clear direction. This is so basic to do in the bios of windows PCs it boggles my mind why this function is so elusive to me!

    Thanks!

Edit: forgot to mention I'm on Big Sur 11.3.the most most recent release.

MacOS Mojave installer being weird when transferring info

    Posted: 20 May 2021 07:55 PM PDT

    Hi!

I got an iMac Pro refurb, and I want Mojave because I have 32-bit software that isn't being upgraded to 64-bit that I still need for my work.

I want to transfer my info so that I can retain as much as possible.

I created a bootable drive of my current system. Testing on the iMP, it boots and works fine. But, I want it on the internal drive.

My current iMac has a 2TB drive; the iMP has a 1TB. So not everything will fit.

Going through installation (erasing the iMP internal drive, First Aid on all involved drives, then installing), I get to the Migration screen and it shows that my current backup is too big. I then uncheck the items I don't need (mostly file, some MP3s, movies, all of which I have elsewhere), then allow to install. The installer for Mojave is on a USB 3.0 thumb drive.

Every time I've tried this, there is an error, mostly the "Sorry, couldn't install the following" error. Then there are hundreds, maybe thousands of files. And most of my settings, except for my user name, are not installed.

I have tried using a Time Machine backup. Tried cloning my backup and uninstalling most of the applications. Tried a clean install and then using Migration Assistant. In each case the same thing happens.

Because it will be very time consuming to install all of the software, and because I was starting to be concerned the refurb iMP had something wrong, I decide to try a transfer install, but got rid of everything except for my system settings. This is where things get weird.

The good: the install completes, and my settings are there (WiFi passwords, dock and Finder shortcuts, etc.).

The bad: all of my files (which I had asked not to be installed) are there. Desktop, downloads, and files, all on there. This left 56GB of space on the 1TB drive!

Here's what I think is happening: the installer is ignoring my selections, and no matter what is transferring over the files. As a result, after they are transferred, it tries to install applications, and there is no room.

I'm thinking that maybe I need to make a version of my boot backup with those files deleted. I think that has to work. But I'm wondering if anyone else encountered this, and if so, how did you solve it?

    Music having a stroke

    Posted: 20 May 2021 09:41 AM PDT

I bought my first Mac ever (2019 Intel Macbook) and it came with Catalina. I've read about Big Sur being a mess and every eBay auction seemed to promise that the Macbooks had been reverted to Catalina. Should I update or is this a legitimate thing?

    Posted: 20 May 2021 11:49 AM PDT

I come from decades of Windows and after Windows 7 there were people who refused to update to 8 (I need the START MENU) or 10 and they were mostly just kooks. Is this like that or is Big Sur the big mess I've read about?

Also, I do audio/video production. Does it feel like most plugins and other things are available?

"caffeinate" doesn't always keep Mac (Big Sur 11.3.1) from sleeping

    Posted: 20 May 2021 08:02 AM PDT

I'm running a Python program in the background at all times. The Python program uses "schedule" package that runs my code every day at 6:00 AM to noon. (It's a weather code to grab forecasts in American cities at 6:00 AM local time.)

I run this in the terminal:

    > caffeinate python code.py

so that my computer won't fall asleep (macOS Big Sur 11.3.1). Unless I have to restart my computer for some reason (or for this error), I keep it running all the time.

Most mornings, I wake up to find my code started functioning at 6:00 AM like I expected and finishes at noon.

Some mornings, however, I wake up to find that either my code did NOT start at 6:00 AM, or it started at 6:00 AM, but paused at some point in the morning and did not continue to run. It will restart when I log back in.

Why isn't "caffeinate" working? What programs or things I can do within Python will actually ensure that my code runs properly at 6:00 AM every day?

And I am NOT just talking about the display. The display goes off when it should after a certain amount of time such that I have to log back in, but this usually doesn't prevent my Python code from running at 6:00 AM every day.

Mail Version 9.3 Rules Stopped Working

    Posted: 20 May 2021 04:46 PM PDT

I have Rules set-up so that incoming emails go into specific Mailbox folders. All of sudden today for no reason whatsoever they're not going into those mailboxes, and straight into my general inbox. The preferences in rules have stayed the same, and nothing has changed. I even went ahead removed them, and started from scratch, creating new mailbox rules. It's still not working, and all emails are going directly into my general inbox after the fact.

They're been set-up and working fine for years. All of a sudden today they're not.

As a side note, another weird glitch that happened was that all my notifications that contained all the stocks I watched were also now gone.

Granted I am still working off of El Capitan, so perhaps some sort of bug from that?

(Developer question) Possible to hide Safari tool/search bar?

    Posted: 20 May 2021 04:30 PM PDT

In fullscreen mode, you can auto hide the entire toolbar. Do you think it's possible to do this while not in fullscreen, so the windows would be beautiful minimalistic windows?

I'm a noob programmer, so I'm wondering if any of you think it would even be possible to make a Safari extension achieve this before I try. I'm worried it's not possible to alter Safari's appearance that much due to permissions or something. Thanks!

    Karabiner and razer products

    Posted: 20 May 2021 04:17 PM PDT

Anyone tried this with Big Sur?

I've got a Razer Tartarus v2 I was using for a few years for WoW that broke with Big Sur. The recommendation on the forums was to use a free key mapping program called Karabiner which... kinda works. When I try to map the keys most work but some simply don't and its driving me crazy.
