3 Quick tl;dr iOS Game Reviews / Recommendations (Episode 81)

    Posted: 09 Apr 2021 03:58 AM PDT

Happy Friday, fellow mobile gamers, and welcome to my weekly game recommendations based on the most interesting games I played last week :) Hope you'll enjoy it.

This episode includes a fun multiplayer twin-stick shooter, which is actually one of the only shooters I've played this year so far, a very unique PvP tower defense game, and an incremental idle RPG.

Also did a video about Supercell's new Clash Quest game this week, in case you're interested.

Disagree with my opinion? Let's have a friendly discussion below.

New to these posts? Check out the first one from 81 weeks ago here.

The games are "ranked" somewhat subjectively from best to worst, so take the ranking for what it is.

    Let's get to the games:

    Underdogs[Game Size: 220 MB] (free)

Genre: Shooter / Twin-stick / Isometric - Requires Online Access

    Orientation: Landscape

    Required Attention: Full

    tl;dr review:

Underdogs is a unique 3v3 twin-stick shooter where our objective is to stay close to a cart to push it to the enemy base, not unlike the Overwatch "Escort" game-mode.

Although there's only one game-mode at the moment, we can switch between any of the game's 13 unique weapons between respawns to best counter our opponents. And the small map sizes create a gameplay experience that is fast-paced and hectic – in a good way. XP earned by playing matches gradually levels up our character, which unlocks coins and new weapons that can be used in all future games. The coins can be spent on buying new cosmetics for our character.

The controls work decently well, with a left-side joystick for moving our character, and a right-side joystick to aim our weapons. Aiming is very unforgiving, which means it takes some training to get good at. We can also double-tap to jump forward or hold down a button to activate a shield that can help us get out of tough situations.

The low-poly art-style is simple and clean, and although Underdog currently lacks additional content, it's a fun and promising game that is actively being updated by its indie developers.

Underdogs monetizes through iAPs for more of the coins we also earn by leveling up our character. It's a perfect no-pay-to-win monetization since these coins can only be spent on cosmetics that have no impact on the gameplay.

Guardian Chronicle [Total Game Size: 375 MB] (free)

Genre: Tower Defense / PvP / Co-op / Strategy - Requires Online Access

    Orientation: Landscape

    Required Attention: Full

    tl;dr review:

Guardian Chronicle is a unique real-time PvP and co-op tower defense game where we create a deck of five heroes that we place as towers on the map to survive waves of enemies.

Much like in Random Dice, our five heroes are put into a continuous randomized queue, from which we can only ever place the first hero. Every time a hero is placed, the mana cost of the next hero increases, which means things slow down as the match progresses. Fortunately, we can merge two heroes on the map to create a level 2 version of the next hero in queue at no cost, which also frees up space on the map for new heroes.

Apart from the typical damage dealers and heroes that slow down enemies, some allow us to gain mana faster, which is useful in the early game, while others increase the power of adjacent heroes. Combined with a large roster of heroes to pick from, this enables a lot of unique strategies.

During PvP, our objective is to survive longer than the opponent, whereas the co-op mode has us work with another player to see how far we can get. Matches typically take no more than 3-5 minutes, although I think we're often matched with bots when not playing with friends.

Winning matches reward us points that unlock hero chests. We can also get heroes through a gacha system that either costs real-life money or tickets earned through gameplay. The more cards we collect, the more each hero can be leveled up.

Guardian Chronicle monetizes through iAPs for the gacha system and a $13.99 battle pass. Paying players have a pay-to-progress-faster advantage, but co-op is a great way to grind new heroes for free players and the casual core gameplay experience is fun.

Tap Wizard RPG: Arcane Quest [Game Size: 94 MB] (free)

Genre: Idle / Incremental / RPG - Offline Playable

    Orientation: Portrait

    Required Attention: Little (idle)

    tl;dr review:

Tap Wizard is an incremental idle RPG in which we equip a wizard with five unique spells that it then uses to automatically defeat endless hordes of enemies while we gradually increase its powers through research, spell upgrades, and weapon enchantments.

Although combat is fully automated, the gameplay feels very active since we need to manually collect the various power-ups and healing potions that constantly drop from killed monsters in order to deal with the strong bosses waiting at the end of every zone. Some of these power-ups get saved in our inventory so we can trigger them when we need them the most.

Apart from progressing from zone to zone, we can enter daily raids to receive spell stones used to unlock new spells, while existing spells rank up the more they're used, providing stronger active and passive abilities. Meanwhile, gold can be spent on researching permanent stat boost and a "power" currency is used to add enchantment bonuses to weapons – both of which are currencies gained from killing monsters. Unused power also adds a stat boost to our wizard whenever we die or manually reset to stage 1.1.

Although the UI is slightly confusing, the game has lots of interesting mechanics to offer and delivers a polished idle RPG experience.

Tap Wizard monetizes through a $9.99 iAP to remove the scarce incentivized ads but still get the rewards, and additional iAPs for a premium currency used to buy convenience items and unlock spells faster than through completing daily raids. The iAPs don't feel necessary to enjoy the game.

Top 10 iOS First Person Shooter Games for 2021 (my research and opinions)

    Posted: 09 Apr 2021 06:23 AM PDT

tl;dr 1 - I rate FPS games based on graphics, physics and game communities. (the ones described as in beta are not yet on iOS, but they will be by the end of the year) The list (not necessarily in order of best) is: PUBG: New state, DEAD TRIGGER 2, cod mobile, Showgun War games, Standoff 2, Dead Effect 2, War Face, Modern combat 5, War After, Modern Strike (runner ups: Hitman sniper, Retract, Bad Landers, Bullet Force, Critical ops, the Bone (real life FPS))

tldr 2 - I made a short video showing footage of each game with voice explanations https://youtu.be/LCkfZL9XEkI

But for those of you who rather read, here is my video script:

One of the biggest problems with playing first person shooters on the phone is that casual gamers will leave in the middle of a match, making it almost impossible to have a good team. So in this list, I will be factoring in graphics, game physics and the community of those games.
    -------------------
Unlike my video on the top 10 mobile games of 2021, this video is not going to talk about the games with the most hype. Rather, this video will simply cover which first person shooters are the ones you should play to get the most enjoyment.

The first game on the list is PUBG NEW STATE. This is kind of an obvious choice. Not only does it have the most hype with its recent release, but the game has great graphics, a new 2051 modern theme, and they kept the best of pubg so that it keeps the classic feel.
The next game on the list is Dead Trigger 2. This game is 8 years old so the graphics aren't amazing compared to something like New State, but it is quickly becoming a cult classic. It has over 50 million downloads and it is clear even from the negative reviews on the playstore that it's player base loves this game. So if you like zombies and gore mixed with good game mechanics, this game is going to be perfect for you.

The third game on the list is Call of Duty Mobile. Call of Duty mobile is another safe choice because Activision did a really good job with it. It was released a year and a half ago and it is one of the cleanest first person shooters on the mobile market. They also have a lot of game modes available to you keeping their players engaged for a long time. There are rumors that Call of Duty war zone will be coming to mobile soon, but there is no official release date yet and based on Activision's history, my prediction is that Warzone will not be coming out until next year.

The next game is Shogun War Games made by MADFINGER GAMES. These developers have have made a lot of good first person shooters. Shogun has a unique flavor making it a good choice for people that are feeling like most first person shooters are the same. It did have a rough start due to bugs, but recent updates have fixed most of those issues.

The fifth game on the list is Standoff 2. Stand-off 2 is a CSGO style first person shooter with clean Graphics in good game physics. It has over 50 million downloads and claims to still be in beta. It also has one of, if not the highest, Play Store rating of any of the other first person shooters. That being said, when you read the comments, they vary quite a bit from people complaining about hackers or bad server lag to people saying that it is better than CSGO itself.

Speaking of which, a lot of people don't realize that 1000s of PC gamers are switching to mobile gaming. I made this discovery by accident two years ago and I can't seem to get the word out. It is definitely not something the gaming community is talking about. If you want to see the story on how I discovered it, make sure to watch this eight minute video and if you like, then maybe consider sharing it with others because I think it is a pretty big discovery, but I can't seem to get the word out.

The sixth game on the list is Dead Effect 2. Dead Effect 2 is a science fiction horror, survival, and RPG first person shooter. You play as one of three main characters in which you level up and choose from tons of options to upgrade your gear, weapons and body implants. It includes more than 20 hours of campaign, has great graphics and is my first recommendation to those who rather complete a campaign than compete in matchmaking.

The next game on the list is Warface Global Operations. Warface is another extremely highly rated game with good graphics, clean user interface and great game mechanics. Some it's players complain about bugs and bad matchmaking, but others say quite the opposite. Overall, it is one of the most well rounded first person shooters on this list.
For number eight, we have Modern Combat 5. I personally didn't want to put this one on here because I have had some bad experiences with Gameloft. Their cut scenes have unbearably cheesy lines, but overall, storyline is not one of the pillars of a great first person shooter. If you read the reviews for Modern Combat 5, you see tons of comments referring to how much the game sucks you in to waste a ton of time which sounds bad, but usually that is a good review.
The next game on the list is War After. War After is currently in open Beta right now, but they have obvious plans to release it sometime this year. The game looks simple, but it is clear that their focus is on the things that gamers actually care about like game physics and well setup game modes so I have no doubt that this will be a top 10 first person shooter for this year.
The last game on this list is Modern Strike. Modern strike plays very similar to Call of Duty mobile, but it has its own unique flare. One of the most common recommendations from mobile strike players is that the game has a really strong sense of advancement allowing you to feel accomplished as you get better at the game. Which in my opinion, that is a really good recommendation.

Now some of you might be upset that I did not include your favorite first person shooter on this list. There were a lot of close calls that almost made it on this list, but either their reviews weren't quite good enough or there were too many reports of afk team members or even hackers that were ruining the game so they ended up getting taken off the list, but they are still really good games.

Lastly, a small game company has been working for 3 years to use our phones to create a first person shooter in real life. It is a crazy project and I think they are doing a really good job so I actually gave them $5000 to help out that project so if you want to know more about it or just see the surprise on their faces when I give them the $5000, then you should go check that out.

Alright guys. I'll see you next time!

Was there ever a good replacement for Tap Tap Revenge ? I want a good rhythm game that isn’t 5 ads between songs.

    Posted: 09 Apr 2021 06:57 AM PDT

Basically it's all in the title

I have a rhythm itch and want to play something like tap tap revenge, however every thing I seem to find is just... bad. I like Cytus and Bang Dream, but I want something more casual.

Anyone got any gems ? Doesn't have to be free.
