Need help finding a right MacBook

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 09:46 PM PST

    Hi everyone,

With my 2013 MacBook Air running out of storage, I'm looking for a new MacBook. It's a challenge for me to switch from macOS to PC although there are games I play that are not supported by macOS. Thus, my current plan is to get a MacBook and run Windows boot camp in it so I can play the games.

I was thinking of getting M1 models, but I found that M1 does not support the Windows Bootcamp. I also use applications that are not supported by M1, which is the reason why I'm looking for Intel. I honestly hope to get M1, but these disadvantages are leading me to choose Intel instead.I also found that Apple discontinued MacBook Air that runs on Intel.

The specs I'm looking for are 512 GB SSD and 16GB RAM. I'm looking at other retailer options to find Intel MacBook Air models that have these specs, but I'm also opening my options for Intel MacBook Pro models.

I use my current MacBook mainly for browsing, watching shows, Google Drive documents, Microsoft Office, and Zoom. I have tons of files in Microsoft OneNote, which has caused frequent slowing and crashing issues on my current MacBook Air. Zoom is also an issue, as my MacBook always heats up while I use Zoom, especially when I use Microsoft OneNote with it. I may also use the MacBook in future for Adobe programs such as Photoshop and Illustrator. I would also like to use it for light gaming purposes (I play Genshin Impact and Maplestory) after getting the Windows bootcamp.

Would it be a good idea to still look for MacBook Air with 512 GB and 16GB RAM, or would it be better for me to switch to MacBook Pro with the same specs? Would it be a better idea to consider lower specs as well? I would appreciate your vote and any advice in the comments section if you have any. Thanks!

    MacBook Protection

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 08:25 PM PST

Does anyone use a screen protector/tempered glass on their MacBook?

What about interior/exterior shell protectors ?

If so, could you recommend any that you've had good luck with?

Hoping to order a new MBA M1 soon 😎

    Thanks!

MBA M1 - Possible Screen Issue?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 07:49 PM PST

I got my first Apple computer for Christmas. Tonight, I noticed a couple of spots on my display when my screen turned off. The spots appear to be "trash" under a layer of the screen (not unlike you would see under a screen protector or window tint).

I thought there may have been a screen protector on it, but it doesn't look like it came with one. Can anyone confirm that these do not ship with a screen protector film and that this may be a problem with my particular hardware?

    Catalina on 2011 Macbook Pro

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 07:47 PM PST

Wow. I just found the DosDude1 site. He has some software that allows Catalina to run on my long ago retired 2011 Macbook Pro model MacBookPro8,1. It was the last Mac I owned that allowed easy upgrades to battery, memory and disk. I threw 16 GB of RAM, a 512 GB Samsung SSD and a new battery in it. I only get just under 4 hours even with the new battery and the screen isn't Retina but it is working great. Worth checking out if you've got an older Macbook Pro you want to run Catalina on.

    16GB or 8GB ram for m1 Air ?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 02:44 PM PST

I recently bought my m1 MacBook Air so I was wondering if I made a right decision on buying the 8GB ram instead of the 16GB variant, what do u guys think? is the 8GB variant good enough to last long?, since im not a heavy user I use it for Uni assignments (word, excel, many tabs open), Netflix, Youtube, web browsing and light gaming occasionally like league of legends.

Which M1 mac for a software engineer

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 02:22 PM PST

    Hey guys!

I've been on the market for a new laptop for a while. And the new m1 macs really blew me away. I've never had an apple product, but I'm thinking of getting one of the new m1 macbooks. I'm really confused whether I should get a M1 16gb MBP or a M1 16gb MBA. I have a powerful desktop computer at home, but I need a good, fast and reliable laptop because I travel quite a lot. The thing I'm more worried about is the temperatures. I don't know why, but, the idea of using a mac air with 10+ browser tabs, IDE's, text editors, compiling, etc. during a whole day without the computer throttling or starting to feel uncomfortable. While passively cooling, does not really click for me. Am I underestimating the efficiency of the MBA to cool? Most of this uncertainty comes from youtube videos, that show the air getting to 90+c.

    Thanks in advance!

    Deleting folders more efficiently

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 02:01 PM PST

I'm wondering if there is a way to delete a folder without deleting the contents of that folder. Say I have items in folder-A inside of folder-B, and I were to delete folder-A in a way where the items would end up in folder-B and the now empty folder-A would go to my trash. Is there a way to do this?

Of course there are ways to move the items from folders and then delete the empty folder, but I often want to put the inclosed items from folder-A right into folder-B and it would be helpful to be able to skip the step of moving the items myself or opening a new finder window or tab.

An example would be when I download movies that show up as folders with the video file along with other items inside. I download the folder right into my "movie" folder, but will eventually only want the video file, not the whole file or the rest of the contents.

    Any suggestions?

    Hi!

I'm a student who likes to do some light photoshop and premiere pro, but nothing really fancy.

I have a desktop PC that's pretty beefy. So this laptop would just be for "casual" work at the school. (and of course a little bit on the way aswell, since i travel quite a bit)

Anyway, so im curious about what laptop to pick up.

Either the MacBook Pro M1 with 16GBMaybe the MacBook Air M1 with 16GBThe Air with 8GBWait for the 14 inch M1'sor what i should do.

Pls help me :) Thanks in advance
If you have any further questions i'll answer them <3 :D

    Can't get Sidecar to work???

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 01:00 PM PST

I have a new Macbook Air M1 and an iPad Pro 10.5" and I cannot get Sidecar to work. I have connected the iPad to the MB Air via BT, and I have two-factor authentication enabled on both machines as well as having both machines signed into the same iCloud account and Handoff is turned on on both machines.

I have tried via a USB connection as well as wireless.

Every tip I've found on the Internet I've tried. No go.

    Any suggestions?

My 2015 Macbook Air is stuck running Sierra 10.12 and won't connect to App Store! What should I do?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 12:42 PM PST

My Macbook is being buggy, laggy, and won't connect to the app store for software updates. I am still running on macOS Sierra 10.12.6 and can't update to a newer OS from here.

I'm thinking about just backing up all my data onto an SSD, doing a factory reboot, then letting the system update me to the latest OS and bug fixes. Thoughts on this? Will I regret it? Is there a possibility I *won't* be able to come up to speed to the latest OS from the point of factory reboot?

I plan to replace the Macbook a bit later this year but would like to get a little more mileage out of it before doing so. I believe the hardware is still solid.

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give me!

    Other Volumes in Container?

    Hi,

It says in my storage that over 150GB's of space is being taken up by "other volumes in containers". I have been trying to find a method to fix it, cause currently I can't even update my mac due to the lack of storage space. Any suggestions would be very helpful as I am fairly lost.Thank you and everyone have a great day!

Reinstalling Mac OS without backup/Time Machine - any suggestions?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 10:31 AM PST

    Hi all,

I have a MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013)and am thinking about reinstalling my Mac OS completely and starting from fresh. (Not using Time Machine backup.)

I am having speed, memory, and hard drive capacity issues that I think are caused by years of tough use (e.g installing and uninstalling a lot of programs, updating OS multiple times, etc.)

I am trying to find the balance from starting over but making sure I keep track/save copies of important items such as browser bookmarks, website passwords, list of programs I want to reinstall, etc.

Are there other "house keeping" things I can do?

Does anyone have suggestions on how to best do this? Is there a way to export a list of OS preference into a csv document. I am thinking of small stuff like the scroll ball acting the way I want (scrolling down/scrolling up.)

Also, does anyone have less drastic decisions I could try before doing this?

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

M1 trackpad unresponsive to taps after pressing a key?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 10:05 AM PST

Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone with an M1 MacBook could help me test this out. I've been having trackpad issues with my new 13" M1 and its driving me nuts because I can't find any information about this elsewhere. It's a big enough issue that affects my daily usage.

Whenever I press a modifier key on the keyboard, and then tap anywhere on the top half of my trackpad, it won't register any clicks. There's seems to be a 2 cm (0.7") area from the top edge that is unresponsive immediately after hitting a key. Bear in mind this only affects tap to click. Force Clicking works just fine but I mostly rely on the trackpad with tapping.

For example, if I held down Command, then tapped the trackpad in Safari to open a link in a new tab, nothing happens. Another example is if I held the Shift key and tapped the trackpad to select multiple emails in the Mail app, nothing happens. If I tapped toward the center of the trackpad however, it works as intended and registers a click.

I've tried booting into Safe mode but the problem still persists so that rules out software-related issues. Could someone with an M1 MacBook let me know if you've experienced something similar? I hope this isn't a hardware fault that warrants a return since this is my main workhorse and having any downtime will affect my workflow. Thank you so much in advance.

Do you also want a Macbook + IPad hybrid?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 09:05 AM PST

If Apple released a MacBook + iPad pro hybrid for like 2000$ I'd instantly sell both my ipad pro 12.9 2020 and my m1 MacBook air to get it. For me the dream laptop is a sort of illustrating/note taking + programming/writing combo. When the first thinkpads with digital pens came out I was so excited, felt like star trek haha, but their performance lacked severely. You could barely illustrate low res paintings let alone bigger projects. Plus they weighed a whole lot and weren't very portable. Now about 10yrs later and my surface pro is as useless and sluggish as those old ThinkPads. However my iPad totally crushes it when illustrating and note taking. I bought my first Mac and I'm loving how well everything works. I kinda lost hope a little because of the ThinkPad and surface pro but now with big sur hinting at touch support it's reignited my hope. I'd loose my shit and get a ipad/mac hybrid in an instant honestly.

Is a mac+iPad hybrid something you're interested in as well? What workflow would you use it for? What screen size would you opt for? (for me it's 14")
