Posted: 19 Oct 2020 01:39 AM PDT I am on MacOS Catalina V.10.15.7 (MacBook Pro 2017) and ever since that update my AirPods Pro won't connect properly. If I take them out of the case and put them in my ear they just simply won't connect. If I choose them in my Bluetooth settings, it tells me they are connected but only for 2 seconds and then it disconnects again (and they don't make the Connection Sound so they were not even really connected in the first place). I tried resetting them and it worked fine for a while but then I had the same issue over and over again. I don't think it's my AirPods since they connect perfectly with my iPhone. I never had that issue before. I could always just easily switch between devices by choosing them in the Bluetooth setting of the device I am connecting them to. (Btw I turned Bluetooth off on my iPhone while trying to connect them with my MacBook to make sure that they are not already connected but even this did not work) [link] [comments]
Creat Full System Restore Point: OSX Catalina Posted: 19 Oct 2020 12:08 AM PDT I have just rebuilt my system with a fresh install of Catalina, all my applications, software, and settings to the way I like it. The system is fresh, clean, and light. iTerm2, homebrew, development envs, etc. are all in place. OhMyZsh installed and configured. Everything box fresh and ready to go. I want to now "place in amber" this system state so I can simply restore it from this point next time I want a fresh system build. I don't see how to do this with TimeMachine or other back ups. I want to be able to save this to an external drive and restore this exact system image at a future date. Any guidance on how to achieve this? 3P software is fine but I'd rather do it natively if possible. [link] [comments]
Brand new 16” MacBook Pro not charging Posted: 19 Oct 2020 12:05 AM PDT Hi, hoping someone might be able to help. Back in January I purchased a new 16" MacBook Pro. Long story short it has mostly sat inside a closed drawer for the majority of this year (the projects I bought it for got sidelined when covid-19 hit). I finally took it out today and unsurprisingly it wouldn't turn on, figured it was a dead battery. Tried plugging it in for hours... still nothing. When attempting to power it up, it briefly shows an empty battery icon with the charging symbol below it and then shuts off again. Hasn't shown any signs of it actually charging the battery. If I unplug the charger it won't turn on at all. Is this fixable, or is the battery kaput? It seems surprising to me as it has barely been used. Thanks for your time. [link] [comments]
APFS and volumes on large external hard drive. Posted: 18 Oct 2020 05:37 PM PDT Hi all I'm about to purchase a 12TB external drive to backup: - A 2011 iMac: Currently running High Sierra - A 2018 MBP: Currently running Mojave - A 4TB Drive for Plex - A 4TB working drive I normally format my backup drives as HFS+ and partition so I can have bootable clones should any of the household computers fail. I'm currently backing up using Carbon Copy Cloner. Rather than deal with micromanaging resizing partitions, I was considering splitting the 12TB drive into 4 volumes so the free space is shared between them. I'm aware APFS on a spinning disk hard drive has performance issues, but this 12TB drive is basically never going to be used live and is exclusively for backing up media. Has anyone else done anything similar? Any real world downsides I might run into? I should note that in the next 6 months I'm likely going to upgrade the 2018 MBP to Catalina and purchase a new laptop, so potentially this setup might have to change with how Catalina reformats system volumes? Unless I'm over thinking it. [link] [comments]

How do I go about remotely accessing my home computer from my work computer via SSH? Posted: 18 Oct 2020 02:49 PM PDT Hey all, I've been reading and trying a ton of things and can't seem to get this. I had this working a few years ago but can't seem to remember how. I know I used the no-ip service to generate a hostname I could use to access my home computer remotely from work using my login a pass, but can't remember the other steps to get this to work. I've opened/port forwarded port 22 in my router as well as set a static IP for the computer I want to remotely access. Trying to connect to the computer using "connect to server" in finder and using the hostname address generated by the no-ip service. What am I missing? I want to be able to login via SSH and mount the drives I would need to transfer files back and forth to. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks! [link] [comments]

Google websites slow to load on MBP 16, regardless of browser. Posted: 18 Oct 2020 07:47 PM PDT So, I'm experiencing a VERY weird issue that I'm not really sure how to troubleshoot. I have a MBP 16, and for a couple of days now it's been having trouble loading Google or Google related services (like Google search, Gmail, Youtube, etc.). Once every 5 minutes or so, google websites will load extremely slowly, or it will not load at all -- it will have trouble for a couple of minutes, then it will work fine for another 5 minutes, and then stop working again, and so on. This happens regardless of browser (I've tried Safari, Firefox, and Google Chrome), and it only seems to affect Google Websites. Other websites work fine all the time. Also, other computers in my network don't exhibit this issue. Only my mac. I've tried clearing the cache and resetting the wifi connection, but that hasn't really done anything. Any idea on why this is happening and how to fix it? Thanks. [link] [comments]

Cannot drag from URL from Safari to desktop to create a shortcut in Big Sur Posted: 18 Oct 2020 05:53 PM PDT macOS Big Sur 11.0 Beta (20A5395g) Safari 14.0.1 (16610.2.8.1.1)
In Catalina, as far as I can remember, dragging the URL to desktop would create a shortcut. Clicking on the shortcut would open Safari at a tab displaying the content of the URL. Is this a new security thing or a bug? PS. I realized just now there's /r/macOSBeta so I'll post there [link] [comments]

Catalina Photos import number doesn't match number in Photos Posted: 18 Oct 2020 11:46 AM PDT So yesterday it took most of the day to import about 50,000 photos into a fresh install of Catalina. After finishing I only have ~30,000 photos. I am guessing that this is because I of it now showing duplicates for RAW, HDR, burst, etc? Can anyone confirm or have any other thoughts. Posted: 18 Oct 2020 03:38 AM PDT Hi, little rant incoming about a tedious workaround on Photos (I had a previous post that I deleted by accident, so I'll trim this one down) Imagine following use case: a work field where you take hundreds of pictures (progress, non conformity, ...) always with your personal phone. The ratio work to personal is like 5-10 to 1. This completely drowns out your album/photos view, both on the phone, and on the mac. Making image AI features such as faces, location, events and such completely useless. The problem is SPLITTING those sets of images as I don't need or want those on my personal library. Up to now, every 6 months or so, I manually go through the library, select the work pictures, export, then while they are still selected: delete. (imagine if you mess up and accidentally un-select the 1000 pictures that you manually selected for export... anyway) I have not found a good solution to do this better, as some features seem to be missing from Photos. It's clearly aimed at a specific target, of people who only take pictures of their personal lifes and as such Photos probably works great. I can think of a ways to make this easier:
The problem with that is that deleting from album does not delete from library. On iOS it does, it asks you whether you want to delete from album or delete completely. The filtering would have to be manually checked as locations can be a bit all over the place, and there might be personal pictures around said locations, but it would be a lot easier
The only solution I have today is to be disciplined and sort photos on the phone in albums (but again, in the rush of a workday I don't always think about doing that). Now that I have paid for some iCould storage, I noticed it's possible to save photos directly to a folder on iCould, then delete from album (and library) easily. I think I'll do this. It's also the main reason I don't use iCloud Photos, where the library is made available on all devices. I don't want boring work pictures to clutter up my albums on the iPad and everywher else, let alone take the GB of unnecessary space (as I offload those to a personal off site backup) Is there any other photo library application that will allow me to easily split photos based on location? Or time of day? I could first import photos there, sort, then put them in Photos. [link] [comments]
