PC user needs help with potential SMC/Magsafe issue. Posted: 30 Oct 2020 01:52 PM PDT Hey. So I am a PC user, but as the resident techie I offered to do a battery swap on my mom's 2013 macbook air. After the swap it booted fine, but the fan wouldn't stop running full speed. Google said SMC may need a reset. Fine. No problem. I try that's but now Magsafe isn't lighting up when plugged in. Ok, maybe the new battery is a lemon. Let's go back to the old one and see what gives. Nope. This one also runs the fan at full speed and won't light the led on the Magsafe. As of now the new battery is in (at least it has fewer cycles on it). But does anyone know what the fuck is going on? Edit: ran diagnostics on it and it said the power adapter could not be tested and there may be a problem with SMC. Thanks. Tell me something I don't know... Edit 2: I'm a fucking moron. My fat fucking thumbs accidentally disconnected the ribbon cable for the fan during the initial swap. I re-attached it and then all was well. [link] [comments]
Things have changed when I reopen my macbook (Possible hack?) Posted: 30 Oct 2020 11:10 PM PDT Okay this probably sounds really dumb but I'm feeling really paranoid about this. I've noticed recently that when I log back into my macbook things have changed. For instance, I was working on an assignment, stopped at a specific section near the beginning of the document as I knew I needed to start off there the next day, shut my macbook and went to bed. When I've gone back to my computer the following morning and opened it up and logged in, it opens to a completely different section of the document with some words highlighted (like when you click and drag over words to copy.) I have not been on the computer and neither has my roommate (who does not have access to it). There's been a few different cases like this where its opened to a random tab on chrome or its in a different app than when I left off. Is this something I should worry about? Has anyone experienced similar? I've had this macbook for about 5-6 years now. It still works for the most part, just an issue with charging. I'm just worried (without trying to sound like a paranoid idiot) that I may have been 'hacked'. Honestly just seems like someone is looking through my open windows and apps as so far nothing has been moved. [link] [comments]

Can I manually reset a macbook pro completely without going to the internet or using icloud logins? Posted: 30 Oct 2020 09:06 PM PDT I knw FBI can, and some hackers. What I am trying to get at is,could I factory reset a macbook pro without internet or any logins whatsoever? and without taking it to the store? I know from my pc days that as long as the bios wasn't locked, I could install windows fresh and overwrite everything and download drivers manually. and when I got a pc without cd drive I bought a seperate usb connected cd drive. wupti I could do a clean install.and I know its possible to have a harddrive split 50/50 Windows /IOS. its called partitioning. factory resettign without Icloud or login, is this possible in 2020 high security macs? how? Do I need to buy an USB -C external dvd drive and torrent macos and burn to dvd and install from that? or an usb-c drive? I don't know if thats even possible on a mac. [link] [comments]

Traded a MacBook Air for a MacBook Pro for $250. Good deal? Posted: 30 Oct 2020 02:26 PM PDT Hello everyone, I traded my 2019 Air for a newer 2019 Pro for $250 CAD. Was it a worthwhile trade? I needed it for some video processing. [link] [comments]
Can I run a USB-C Hub with an extension cable? Posted: 30 Oct 2020 12:34 PM PDT I want to do some proper cable management on my setup and want to extend my short USB-C Hub with an extension cable, so I can stick it on the underside of my desk. The Hub is currently providing HDMI, USB-A and power delivery simultaneously, so it would be something like Macbook <--> Extension Cable <--> USB-C Hub <---> Monitor (HDMI) + Power + Webcam & Microphone (USB-A) Would a simple Male to Female USB-C extension cable work for this? What do I need to look out for? (for example, does the whole setup need to be under a certain length for the signal not to drop on the HDMI?) Thanks a lot! [link] [comments]
USB-A Dock That Works With (2015) MacBook Pro Posted: 30 Oct 2020 12:23 PM PDT Does anyone know of a docking station that works with MacBook that connects via a USB-A? I have a j5Create docking station that claims it's compatible with OSX/MacOS, but it only seems to support a single screen. I'd be trying to connect the MacBook through a single port as opposed to running multiple cables through HDMI and Thunderbolt 2. [link] [comments]

Posted: 30 Oct 2020 09:00 AM PDT Greetings, Im looking to buy a MacBook and I'm thinking about the MacBook Pro 15 2018 with i7, dedicated graphics, 16gb ram and 512ssd used with no warranty for 1300€ or a new MacBook Air 2020 with i7, 16gb ram and 512 ssd for 1100€ I will use for my college projects (I'm in bioinformatics and will go for the master in data science) Do u think the MacBook Pro is not reliable in terms of the keyboard issues or in 2018 the keyboard was way better and supposedly fix? Really need help on this one Have a nice day [link] [comments]
Trick to opening (lid) for a Macbook Air 2020? Posted: 30 Oct 2020 07:25 AM PDT So first off just a quick confession for context, I've been a PC user my whole life, but recently I was looking for a light laptop with good battery life to do some word processing work around the house or when I'm out and about. My wife had been a macbook user in college (only stopped because it got physically damaged) and spoke highly of them, particularly their keyboard which since I plan to mainly use this for typing was the most important component and one I've historically disliked on PC laptops I've owned, so I decided finally, at the ripe age of 37, to buy a macbook (air 2020 specifically). Less then a week into ownership, so far everything's been great with one odd, unexpected exception that I'm frankly embarrassed to even admit on here (especially since I've already searched youtube for videos on and couldn't find a single one which suggests this is something thats obvious to everyone but me). I can't seem to figure out how to open the darn thing. I've used laptops in the past, and this has never once been an issue, I just lift the lid, simple as that. But with my macbook air, every time I want to use it, I spend a good minute or two flipping the thing around, trying comically to get enough of a grip on the tiny ridge at the front middle, so that I can pry the thing open. Now most of the time I'm using it around the house, so the embarassment factor I can live with if it brings a smile to my wife or daughter, but I'm starting to notice that I'm actively avoiding using it unless I plan to be on it for an extended period of time, because if I only have 5 minutes to type something, I don't want to waste 2 of those minutes fighting to get the thing open. So, TLDR, is there any trick to opening a Macbook Air 2020's lid I should be aware of, maybe an ideal hand positioning that long time macbook users would already be familar with but some one new to them like myself is just ignorant of, or maybe it requires fingernails that I don't have, or some little opening tool that I need to buy separately? Even if there isn't a special macbook handshake that I'm missing out on, if this isn't an issue for you, I'd be most interested in hearing the method you use for opening your macbook air 2020's lid incase there's something that should be obvious I'm just not thinking of. Thanks in advance to any and all thoughts on this, and for keeping the snickering to a minimum (to be clear, doesn't have to be 0 snickering, I know your only human). [link] [comments]
Macbook Pro order processing since forever Posted: 30 Oct 2020 05:39 AM PDT I ordered my MacBook on 16th October and it said it should reach me between 4th to 11th November. That is already a very late delivery time but I can still work with it. It's 29th now and my order still says it's processing. Anyone know if this is normal? [link] [comments]

Posted: 30 Oct 2020 05:13 AM PDT So I'm thinking about getting a Mac for college. I'm in bioinformatics last year and I will follow studying data science on Master degree. I'm thinking about getting a MacBook Air 2020 with i7, 16gb ram and 512gb ssd for 1100€ in box sealed. But idk if it is able to handle all the stuff I need and so I was looking for a MacBook Pro 15' from 2015 with i7 4470hq 16gb ram and 512gb ssd. In my opinion the MacBook Air was probably a better choice since it's newer and it's sealed and i saw in some Reddit post that it's great for students because I am not a pro user like some say ... I'm not doing any photoshop or video editing or working with enormous amount of data like a "pro". But still some doubts in the air that I would like to clarify. Have a nice day [link] [comments]

Posted: 30 Oct 2020 01:26 AM PDT Hi everyone, I'm looking to buy a MacBook on eBay. I've found this one for around £300, but it has an issue - is it fixable? This is the description: "Power button does not work. Needs to be put on charge for an hour or two before it will turn on automatically. Works perfectly fine once turned on. In great condition, only slight signs of wear and tear. Told off Apple that the issue is to do with the motherboard." It's a 13" 2017 model. [link] [comments] |
