Just got a MacBook after wanting one for the last couple of years.

The title pretty much says it all. I got the 2020 MacBook Pro 13 inch with the max specs. I'm actually coming from Windows, so this is my introduction to Mac. I wonder if what they say about going Mac and never going back is true.

Macbook Pro 2020 kept saying USB accessories disabled, why? I have a monitor and a port hub to plug in dongles for keyboard/ mouse and power. Even tho the laptop constantly reminds me the accessories are being disabled, I can still use my keyboard/ monitor with np. What's the problem with my mbp?

Macbook a1181 worth it to buy with a blank white screen?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 08:49 PM PDT

Hello! im looking at buying an early 2008 macbook a1181 with the 2.4ghz c2d. However, it has a seemingly common white screen problem. All i can spend on a laptop rn is 45$ and this is right against my budget and im extremely familiar with computer repair.

Are these models easy to fix with this issue? I understand that a bad boot sector or faulty ram will cause this issue, but how commonly will a bad logic board pop up? I have spare hard drives and ram, but motherboards are expensive for me >~<

Do you think it was a bad idea to buy a MacBook right now?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 08:22 PM PDT

2 weeks ago I bought a 2020 MacBook Air for college, the i3 version with 16gb RAM. So far it's working very good for my needs, I love my new MacBook, I previous lay had a 2015 12" MacBook and that was becoming very slow and I needed something new. However, I just heard that new MacBooks are going to be released later this year with the new Apple silicon and they will start at like $849. Now I feel like i made a huge mistake. Do you think it was a bad idea buying the 2020 MBA right now? I feel like it's Shit now after hearing the news about the new ones coming soon, I want this MacBook to last me 5-6 years. Do you think it could do that or should I sell it and get the new ones coming out later this year?

    Budget MacBook

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 02:16 PM PDT

Apple already has released the iPhone SE for people who want the iPhone experience without breaking the bank. However, us MacBook users have to sometimes get into debt just to buy one. I have a 13 inch 500 GB 8 GB RAM model and it costed me nearly $2000 Canadian. What could Mac do to make a budget MacBook, maybe called the SE? First off, Apple could make a non-Retina display model with a Core i3 and maybe 4 GB of RAM. Include a slower SSD or a traditional platter-based hard drive and take out the TouchBar. That could produce a MacBook for under $1000 for sure!

    External storage question

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 09:38 AM PDT

    Hey guys,

I just enrolled in some computer science classes at my university, and I had to download windows 10 via Bootcamp assistant on my Macbook air (2018) 128gb. It took all my storage, and I really do not want to buy another computer/macbook with larger storage. Is there any way to upgrade the storage on my mac? I saw that I can buy external storage devices for like 1TB etc. Is that any helpful? What are your guys' input?

Early 2016 MacBook (not Pro) and Hi-Res Monitor -- 2 questions

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 12:27 PM PDT

I have an early-2016 MacBook (not pro, no Thunderbolt) with only a USB-C port and Intel 515 graphics. I read that this could support 3840x2160 @ 60Hz via DisplayPort over USB-C so I got an HP Elite USB-C monitor with that native resolution, hooked them up, and Holy Cow! it works! Monitor powers the laptop and gets video signal on same cable. Bliss!

Except, I can't insert the Apple A/V multiport adapter into the mix. Power to MacBook comes through, signal to monitor doesn't.

Found a website that explained in excruciating detail just how DisplayPort is transmitted over USB-C, and how it is just possible to get 3840x2160 @ 60Hz, leaving no bandwidth for concurrent USB 3.x. This is probably why the Apple A/V can't work, because it supports USB 3. There is, however, a dedicated USB 2 lane in the USB-C spec, so you CAN do that and DisplayPort that concurrently, with the right adapter. I realize that gives up the USB 3 speed, but that's not much of a consideration for me, my backups aren't large. The site pointed to several adapters, but they all converted the Mac usb-c to a female DisplayPort jack plus a USB 2 jack.

Question 1: What I would like is an adapter for USB-C to USB-C, including both signal and power, that also splits off the USB 2 into a separate jack. Does anyone know of such a thing?

Additionally, I'd like to know that I am getting the best performance using my new monitor with my old MacBook (directly connected, disregarding the adapter question). If I set the HP display resolution to "Default for display" in the MacBook Display settings, it runs the monitor at 3840x2160 but says "UI looks like 1920x1080", i.e., half the resolution in each dimension. I think this is a "retina" thing. And, indeed, if I open an image "Actual size" in Preview, expecting to get image-pixel-to-display-pixel identity, it is clearly sized as though the screen were 1920x1080 pixels. I can go into the Display settings and set resolution to a "Scaled" value of 3840x2160, and that works: Actual size image corresponds to correct number of screen pixels. UI labels, as for toolbars. are a little small for my taste, but manageable.

Question 2: Is there any inefficiency involved in using the "Scaled" resolutions on the MacBook (MacOS Catalina) if you are scaling to the exact screen native resolution? I'm just wondering if, merely by selecting "scaled", that some transformation is invoked that does a lot of multiplications by 1.0, or even worse, perhaps images are scaled by 2.0 and then by 0.5, or some such. Maybe this is a non-issue---it seems to be working OK, but maybe I haven't yet pushed its limits. Any experts out there who have thoughts about this?

Thanks in advance for any advice. I know one solution would be to upgrade the MacBook, but it seems serviceable for me right now, and I thought I could put off that upgrade for a year or two. The monitor was surprisingly inexpensive, so seemed good for the interim.

    Using Macbook in clamshell mode?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 08:34 AM PDT

    I am using macbooks below.

    2019 Macbook Pro 16 2018 Macbook Air 13 2015 Macbook Air 11

Airs' temperature don't get so hot, but Pro gets real hot with some programs.

I wonder if its safe to use in calmshell mode. Some say it is bad for its display film in long term.

    Any opinions?

    Cooling pad for lap

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 12:06 PM PDT

    I recently switched from a 13-inch MBP to a 15-inch. I was using the following pad: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004JU0E1W/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1

They no longer sell it so I can't get the larger one. Does anyone know of a similar one? I can't find any like it. Not only do the TheraPAK company seem to be out of business, but no one sells any product like it. Were they found to be unsafe or something?

I don't want one that plugs and has a fan, I think those are pointless.

I don't want one that has some kind of soft surface, I think those don't dissipate the heat very well.

I've seen some wooden stands, but they are all very expensive.

Keyboard and Mouse randomly not working

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 11:12 AM PDT

    Hello,

Sometimes when I open up my laptop and get to the login screen, my keyboard, or mouse, or, more commonly, both will just not work. I shutdown the computer and reboot it and yet it still doesn't work. It takes me between 2-??? tries before it works or I give up. Even after it works, if I leave it on sleep for an hour or so and come back, it sometimes stalls and works again or it just stops working all together.

I've read online that I have to hold down Command+Option+Shift or Caps Lock whilst it reboots, but I'm not even sure that really helps, as it's pretty much luck at this point. I've tried to do the Command+R thing, but it won't load up the Recovery Tool. I'm at a loss here.

This has been happening since I updated my MacBook Pro sometime around April and I just can't deal with it anymore without knowing why it's happening. I've nearly missed interviews because of this crap and I'm just getting by on luck.

I want to provide you all with more details, like model, iOS, etc...but my laptop is currently stuck in this limbo. I'll update the post once it boots up properly. I appreciate any and all help! Thank you.

Edit: Finally got it working now. Here's additional info:

macOS Catalina 10.15.4; Model: MacBook (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015)

    Random screen freezes

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 09:59 AM PDT

My 2010 MacBook had been running fine but recently the screen freezes every 5-10 minutes for 15-20 secs. When I'm playing a game or watching something, the game or the video still plays in the background and I can still hear my zooms too when it freezes. I can move the cursor too when it freezes. Any solutions?
