Next MacOS release should focus on fixing bugs rather than new features. Posted: 05 Jun 2020 03:21 AM PDT Now that the WWDC 2020 is about to drop I think Apple should really focus their efforts on making MacOS stable again, like the good old days. Kinda like they made with iOS 12 in 2018. [link] [comments]

Zoom audio breakups + fan noise - am I hitting my thermal ceiling? Posted: 05 Jun 2020 04:24 PM PDT I recently purchased a new 2020 MacBook Air Core i5 laptop (8GB RAM) for basic productivity use. I bought it at Costco for $1300 (plus $199 for AppleCare). In general, the laptop has been great. However, I noticed a recurring problem during Zoom calls. (I unfortunately can't avoid Zoom as many companies I engage with use it.) At about the 20-25 minute mark, the fan really kicked in and the audio on the call started breaking up and I was losing whole sentences even as the video continued. I will admit that I was running Chrome and OneNote at the same time, as I generally need access to line-of-business apps via these apps. I was wondering if I was hitting the thermal ceiling of my processor and if I should be strongly considering returning this laptop during the return window and getting a 2020 MacBook Pro. Am I overreacting? [link] [comments]
Question regarding efficient, simultaneous use of two macbooks Posted: 05 Jun 2020 02:29 PM PDT Hey folks, I have two MBPs, one for work, one personal, and I use both throughout the day. I have one large 4K monitor and a moderately complex Audio setup, so, even with a dock, it's annoying to constantly swap which laptop is plugged in and I've been trying to find the most effective way to access one machine from the other as a result. I've been remoting into one machine from the other when I need to use both, but, despite gigabit LAN connections on both, performance, especially for video, etc., is not great. I've used Jump, Screens, NoMachine, AnyDesk, Splashtop, built in VNC, RealVNC, etc., no luck with any of them. Parsec (unfortunately Windows only) seems to be the only remote desktop software that has strong enough visual performance to achieve what I'm looking for. I've tried using a secondary monitor combined with Synergy/Sharemouse/Teleport, but there too, the experience wasn't great. I'd basically like this to work as if one machine was a VM hosted on the other -- minimal latency, strong visual performance, and the ability to share connected devices from the host to the secondary machine -- but haven't found a good way to do this. If I had a machine powerful enough to do both at once, I'd just create a VM to keep that environment separate, but I don't have enough processing power or memory to spare. Being able to seamlessly switch between the two with a trackpad gesture is really the main thing I'm looking for so I can easily switch context with minimal overhead. Does anyone know of a high-performance way to access/view a separate macOS system from within another? Both machines are in close proximity, connected to LAN, and running macOS. Work machine has an 8-core i9 with 32 GB RAM (which I unfortunately use most of for my development work), and my personal machine is a dual-core i5 with 8GB. I've got a bunch of docks, adapters, a capture card, etc. so I have some room to get crafty if need be. Also willing to purchase (within reason) additional software or hardware if necessary. Catalina and itunes - help needed Posted: 05 Jun 2020 05:16 PM PDT Hello all! I have a spanking new 2020 macbook air that i updated to catalina the day i got it... like 3 days ago now. I'm trying to dowload itunes (the link in music isn't working), and apple is telling me to get catalina before i can get itunes. Air tells me it is up to date and running catalina 10.15.5. I followed the first couple steps to update to see if it would recognize my os, but that aint happening. Am i losing my mind? Am i missing something? Any insight is appreciated. My Mac is not charging - type c edition Posted: 05 Jun 2020 03:52 PM PDT Hi fellas, I have a MBP 13 2017 late. One month ago, my battery has changed in Keyboard Recovery program. It says 960 days for life in CocosBattery but, cycle was zero when my first check. I keep my Mac at charge as much as possible and I unplugged it for battery usage once in two weeks, as recommended. The problem is; Today, when I plugged the cable, it said it's charging but it's not charging. It's too late when I realize the truth. It wasn't charging. My Mac gone and I plugged the cable again (for 4-5 times, I guess) and it sounded like it's charging. After the longest ten minutes of my life, I realize again that it's not charging. I check the cable and power adapter, but everything seemed fine. The last time I plugged in the cable, it made a charging sound and after that, strange electrical noise. And I stop trying to fix it. Is it dead or something? Any advices are very welcome. [link] [comments]
How can I get my new SSD running on my 2009 MBP without cloning the previous disc? Posted: 05 Jun 2020 03:00 PM PDT My previous HDD died, so I bought a new SSD to install in my 2009 MPB 17". It was running El Capitan before it failed. I have access to a laptop running windows 10, so I used the disk utility to format the SSD as exFAT, and then created a bootable USB stick with a 10.11 .dmg I downloaded from Apple. I've tried resetting the PRAM on my mac, pushing CMD+R during restart, etc, but all I see is a folder with a question mark. Even when I have the bootable USB stick with 10.11 on it, nothing happens. When I restart and hold down cmd+R, nothing happens. It stays on a grey screen. I've also tried holding down the option key while restarting to choose a startup disk, but again, nothing. What else can I try? [link] [comments]
Any Photoshop users? Need help wrangling in Spotlight - it’s turning into a memory hog. Posted: 05 Jun 2020 10:55 AM PDT Hoping someone can help because Spotlight (I believe) is hogging a large chunk of my memory. Whenever I work in Photoshop, "QuickLookUIService", eventually pops up in my Activity Monitor and steadily steals memory. With one PSD open it will take about 500Mb, two or three documents will steal about 2Gb. If any of these documents are on the larger side, it starts to push 4Gb. If I dare open Illustrator for a single file, both applications start to crawl. Google has lead me down a few paths but so far none have been successful. There were numerous posts about not letting Spotlight index the 'presets' folder. I had no luck with that. Would appreciate hearing if anyone has experienced anything similar or have a solution/workaround. [link] [comments]
Apple should rename the "Activity Monitor" to the "Google Monitor". Posted: 05 Jun 2020 04:57 AM PDT Most of the time I open Activity Monitor is to see what runaway unoptimised bullshit process Chrome or any of the Google products are nailing my system with. /rant [link] [comments]
Photos Library taking too much space and not updating Posted: 05 Jun 2020 01:53 PM PDT Hello, On my MacBook, the photos library takes up 73GB of 128GB storage, I've deleted as much as I can from the photos app and amazingly, the total storage on the app is about 10GB! Where is the other 63GB coming from on the Mac disk space?? How do I get rid of this. It seems that the possible solution is that it hasn't updated in a while, as the photos library says it hasn't been modified since October. How to do get it to update to the reduced 10GB? It says there's not enough local storage on the photos app when I go into that? [link] [comments]
Authentication breaks when VPN is connected Posted: 05 Jun 2020 01:44 PM PDT Just wondering if anyone else has seen a problem like this? I connect to my work VPN, and suddenly sudo breaks and won't accept my password, and if the screen locks, I can't use my password (or the admin account's) or my touch ID to login. The window just bounces at me in disgust without accepting my password. I have to hard reboot to kill the VPN connection. Very frustrating. [link] [comments]
In Apple's Music.app, how can I search among comment ID3 tags? Posted: 05 Jun 2020 01:22 PM PDT I use the comment ID3 tag to apply sub-genres to my songs (e.g. a song by Metallica will have 'Rock' in the genre tag, and also 'Metal' in the comment tag). Prior to Catalina, in iTunes, I used to be able to use the search functionality to search my library using comment tags. Now, in Music.app, this doesn't work. If I type a sub-genre in the search box in the upper left corner, nothing shows up. What's the deal? Is there a workaround for this? [link] [comments]
Use an external SSD to turn my work computer into a personal computer? Posted: 05 Jun 2020 01:06 PM PDT I have a mid-2018 MacBook Pro issued by my employer, and it's fine for work. But, being that I'm working from home indefinitely, I've been wanting to create a separate user account for all my personal stuff — at the end of the workday, flip over to my personal account, forget about work. However, it's locked down and while our IT team is understanding, they can't allow another user account. That said, is there anything stopping me from buying a portable SSD, installing macOS on it, and booting from it? Free reign over the SSD, and unplug it when it's time for work? I have a bootable Catalina USB stick sitting around, and it shows up in the boot manager when I hold down the option key. Is this a good solve? [link] [comments]

Turbo Boost Switcher Uninstall Posted: 05 Jun 2020 12:59 PM PDT Hey, I'm a fairly new mac user and I downloaded Turbo Boost Switched to test out but it didn't want to work for me, so I just want to fully uninstall it. I managed to delete the application etc, but when I go into Finder and search "turbo", I still have things related to the download on my mac but I am unable to drag them to my bin or delete them. How can I delete these files and will they cause any issues in the future? Thanks. [link] [comments]
Posted: 05 Jun 2020 12:59 PM PDT I know how to change the icon of a folder that sits on my hard drive (Get Info, Copy + Paste the image). But that approach doesn't seem to work on any folders in iCloud. I don't mind the cloud version of the folder to be the default, but is there no way to change how it appears on my machine? Sidecar Port to Older Macs Broken with 10.15.5? Posted: 05 Jun 2020 12:38 PM PDT Is anyone else having issues using Sidecar now that Apple pushed out 10.15.5?
